Ophthalmology (and others) interest - step score?

Hello,

I’m a MS2 and I’ll be taking step next summer. I know ophthalmology is a competitive specialty (~240 avg step) but I think it’s something I’m really passionate about. (Even reading research articles on ophthalmology = fun for me, could be a sign this is my calling?? Never got bored studying the eyes. Haha).

Can anyone who matched ophtho give me advice?

Step score to aim for? How competitive is this specialty now? Could an average med student with avg (hypothetical 230 step) even dream about getting in? (I think ophtho is the coolest career in the world, but scared my step score wont be stellar).


Also considering internal med if ophtho doesnt pan out.

Forgot to mention that matching in a particular location doesn’t matter much to me, so long as I match ophtho some day (one can dream)
