OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats! And as to the issue about working there, in the last years thread she provided an opinion with alot of info about the situation an so I was just wondering wht she thought now.

I have applied to OSU and have been following the situation with the teaching hospital for several years now. Just this past week I spoke to several residents in the program and they claim that the problems have been fixed. All three residents in that I spoke to claim that with the additional funding from the state and new managment brought in the teaching hospital is now stable. Dr Mom is full of good firsthand information so if she knows something I don't then I would suggest you listen to her.

Hey DrMom, whats your opinion on the hospital issue and stuff that went on last year at this point in time? Do you think there is still much to worry about?

That's actually a very important question to ask. Having a core training hospital for rotations is something you guys all need to be looking at when you check out schools. We can all muddle through MS1-2 anywhere...it's the rotations that truly make your medical training.

It's definitely fine for 4.5 years (we're basically 6 months into 5 year agreement). Last fall, once the city and other hospitals figured out how big of a problem it would be for Tulsa, they came together and found a solution. I don't think the local powers-that-be will be willing to let the place close (or get close to closing) in 4 years. They may want to change the arrangement (ie: I don't think SJMC really wants to run OSUMC indefinitely), but I'd be surprised if anyone let OSUMC close.

I've been at OSUMC in some capacity for 6.5 years now. This is the first residency recruitment year I've seen where there haven't been questions about the viability of the hospital and whether the residencies would actually still be around. It is a very nice change and I feel comfortable recruiting new residents to start next year. In addition, the trust that is technically running/funding the hospital and the new administrators truly seem to be trying to fix things. For example, OSUMC residents have been paid approx $5k less a year than equivalent residents at SJMC. When that was recognized, we were given a raise to equalize things. Makes a big difference for us residents and it is definitely a supportive move.

That's not a fair question to ask her. She works there now and everyone knows her SDN id.

I appreciate your point. I do keep my actual name off the forums, although some of you know it (which isn't a problem) and some of you have met me in person.

While it is true that both the school and my residency attendings know who I am on here, I'm willing to give honest answers. I'd say the same things in person to OSU-COM and OSUMC administrators.

Thank you for your opinions and the information! Medical school is a huge step and I want to be aware of everything if OSU gives me the green light.

New to site - I got my interview call for November 12th on Monday as well. Looks to be a lot of good information on this site.

Anyone know how many applicants receive invites to each interview day?

I like to think that as a whole, our student body is forthcoming with the pro's and con's of our institution. I can still remember ~2.5 years ago being in your guys' seats and getting quality information from Dr. Mom. I met her on my interview date and still feel like she is someone I could go to for any type of hospital, rotation, or residency questions I may have. I'm pretty straightforward in how I view the school and the admin knows who I am on here. I don't fear any retribution, but I'm typically pretty PC when I express frustrations. Spending a couple of weeks at OSU-MC this summer, the residents I met there simply re-affirmed what Dr. Mom stated above. There is a little more of a calmness in attitude about the future, whereas in the past the idea of a "future" was kind of sketchy.

As far as 1st and 2nd years go, the school has gone above and beyond in the past few years in making changes to curriculum and schedules to help out the student body. I also know that the curriculum is changing for the class that enters in 2011 to systems based.

How many acceptance offers do you think they have to offer to fill their 92 spots? Just trying to do the odds. It says on the website they interview 177/302 in-state applicants. I wonder how many of those 177 get offers.

I believe they offer probably 150 or more because I was told they get a large waitlist going until may then cut it down to a final waitlist where the majority are cut. Someone inside may know better though.

So, if your in state and were offered an interview you have a pretty good chance. I guess as long as you do not bomb the interview.

Generally yes, that holds true through the first 2-4 rounds because as Sara said, OSU does rolling admissions therefore even if you interview early and are waitlisted, your app is reviewed every time again as the rest of the interviews are conducted meaning you have the chance to be accepted from that point on.

I know of two people last year that felt the interview went great and didn't get in. It's not a shoe in just because you are in state. Just ask all the people on last years thread that didn't make it

I did not mean to insinuate that in state applicants with interviews are for sure getting in. I am just excited about getting the interview in the second round. In looking at the numbers, it appears to be a huge step.

Sorry, I did not mean to belittle those that interviewed and did not get in last year. Lord knows I have been in that situation, not at OSU though.

You should be excited, early is always better

Early is better I interviewed last year and felt I did quite well in the interview. My stats are a bit on the lower side so being in state it evened out and I made the wait list, and eventually made the final wait list. Well august rolls around and no phone call so reapp here I am and aacomas isn't finished yet.

When did you interview in the cycle? My stats are are a little low as well, my MCAT(25) is anyway. GPA is 3.75, Math and Science 3.69 - I started slow and finished strong, I don't really know if that matters though.

I wish you luck. If you were on the final waitlist last year, you should have a good shot. I understand the aacomas thing, I submitted middle July and it did not go through until the end of August, quite a wait.

Last year it was january when I interviewed, december is when I got the call. the class was just about half full when my interview took place.

Well on that note it should be about a week until first round offers go out...

That’s exciting and nerve racking. You said earlier on the forum that during your interview there were a lot of opportunities for questions. Did you mean in the actual interview or throughout the day? I have been trying to think of good questions to ask in the interview.
Another question, how many interview spots do they have per round? You said 8 per day, are there like 2 or 3 days in a round?

I had opportunity for both, but by far more questions can be asked throughout the day outside the interview. About three days per round, I posted earlier in this thread the interview dates before new year.

Throughout the whole day there was ample time for questions lol. I had about 5 minutes in my interview for questions.

I wrote my questions on a notepad ( only had four questions but didn't want to forget them). When the interviewers asked if I had any questions, I responded by pulling that out and saying of course, they had an oh no look (in a good way). We where starting to run over on interview time anyways (going well though, at least that's what I tell myself).

Anyone know the typical stats (GPA MCAT) of the students who receive acceptance from these first rounds (OCt-Dec 2009) of interviews? At 8 a day and 11 days - if they offer to half the interviewees that would fill up half of their class - roughly.

I can tell you mine, I had a 3.64 gpa (3.0 in 66 hours ten years ago and 3.92 in 100 hours within the last three years) and a 28 mcat. I know of people that interviewed in the first round with mcat ranging from 25 to over 32. Also I know of a gpa around 3.5 that interviewed first round. OSU told us that about 85% of first round (October interviews) get acceptances, others get waitlisted or possible rejection (but unlikely). I know that as each round passes, the percent that get immediate acceptance diminishes.

I don't think it is anywhere near 150, marshds asked about acceptances, not waitlists. Maybe 150 waitlists are offered (I doubt it's that high) but as you stated, many are cut before the final waitlist.

Did you have to ask them or did they just tell you?

RevDoc-what are your stats?

I asked the question: statistically in the past what where the percentage of waitlisted applicants from the first round? They responded by saying that 85% get immediate acceptance (and left it at that).

well if that holds true that means out of the 24 that interviewed (or were supposed to):
20 accepted
4 wl or deny

Considering its an extreme rarity that anyone oos gets accepted immediately, that knocks out two that I know of and the 1 no show we know of counts as 3.
That leaves 1 more to be waitlisted/denied.

seems like excellent odds!

Congrats!!!....that is awsome. Just one, your call is coming.

Congrats!!...they call me Nostradamus. I envy your joy.

New to the site - Got an interview call Monday for Nov 12. Anyone else for that date?

Looks like its me and you rev, November 12th. At least we know there was only a 10 day wait between interview and notification, thats good turn around. Still, seems so far away.

Congrats!!!
Any word from whatsnext?

Yes sir! Got the call about 4:00 today. I guess I can join your FB group now 😉. Congrats to everyone who also got the call!

back in my day, you had to wait on the fed-ex acceptance letter......

As happy as I am now, I'll feel much better once I have that letter in hand. But, It's definitely nice to get such a call to start the weekend right!

Congrats on the acceptance! Any idea of your decision between OSU and RVU?

back in my day, you had to wait on the fed-ex acceptance letter......

I was told we'd be getting a UPS package tomorrow or monday... im pulling for it to come tomorrow!

Wow - Congrats to all of you newly accepted Med students!!

No one has posted a rejection or a waitlist yet? Hmmh
Ive read that by being in the first groups to interview you're their prime choice and you really have to screw the interview up to not get it. Any other takes on that anomally? Might just be wishful thinking since I'm in the 2nd round🙂

I'm a 3.8 cGPA, 3.75 sGPA, and 26S MCAT - with B.S., M.S., and almost done with a 2nd B.S (>200 hours).
I've got lots of Academic honors and a TON (literally 100's of hours) of EC's - all community and health related. Then again, I am 29! lol

This is my first time to apply to med school - just decided a year ago. OSU is my first choice - looks like a great education

You're pretty solid. You're pretty close to Just One's stats and circumstances so I think you should have a decent or more than decent shot.

By the way - I thought that decisions weren't getting made until Nov 15th. I cetainly am glad ya'll don't have to wait.

P.S. God, I don't want to wait either (Patience isnt really a virtue)

You are fine, sitting pretty. Of course, no matter how many times you hear that, you'll never believe it until you are accepted. I speak from experience.
