OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
incase you dont want to read, yes all attendance is required. Doesn't matter for me though, I am an auditory/written learner and therefore will do best attending.

The school's official policy is that class attendance is required, however only the Histology professor keeps track, and everybody goes to that class anyway. Some people skip classes all the time, and others attend everything. All labs are required attendance. The school does not post lecture recordings because they feel it will reduce class attendance, but students will sometimes record lectures and post them.

First year it is totally up to the student really. Histo quizzes will make you attend, as well as labs. I did better grade wise when I didn’t attend lectures, but not everyone was that way. Second year the classes all have quizzes of some sort. Most are not for grades, just for attendance. I have several friends at schools where attendance is completely up to the students. Most did better when they attended lecture. A lot of times the professors stress what the important points of each lecture are. Without those points of interest its easy to get bogged down in the vast amounts of material presented.

Ill have to wait and see how classes go, but I assume that i will be the same asall of college has been and attend most all lectures and such.

on a side note... I have my interview in 48 hours! Oh the excitement... lol

Probably should've asked this earlier, but might as well now.

Any interview tips for me? less than 36 hours until it happens!

Any thing you wish you would've known?
Said or not said?

just trying to prepare myself for the interview...

The interviews are generally laid back. They often ask if you're thinking of primary care and/or rural medicine. Answer honestly...those aren't rule-out questions and interview fakery is bad mojo. 😉

Students will come in and chat with you between classes. Take time to talk with them and ask questions. They know 1st and 2nd year well, but are less knowlegeable about the last 2 years since they haven't gotten there yet.

FYI, I called OSU earlier today and they said they're finishing up the first round of applicants and that it's still relatively early for them in the cycle.

Yes... Just relax! Be yourself.

Ill see you tomorrow... camping out at the best western near the airport at the moment. See you at 8 am sharp.

Just got out I'll post interview feedback once I get home and can get on the computer. I enjoyed the atmosphere and feel great overall.

Thanks Phlame, you rock! I'm sure you did great today.

Added interview feedback.

Any questions, pm me!

Btw we were told that the admissions committee would be meeting in two weeks to make the first selections and also to select the next round of interviews. So it'll likely be two weeks before we hear anything.

On the supplemental application, did anyone put anything under "is there any additional information that you would like the college to know about you part"? Thanks.

I was just wondering. For the secondary application questions, did you all write a lot? It seems like "Why do you wish to attend the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine?" is the only question I have anything to write about, and that will only be about one or two paragraphs.

The first interviews are next week. Yes go ahead and send secondaries asap. I wrote about a page and answered the why OSU and also the last one about anything else (I forgot to put physician shadowing on Primary and wanted them to know I have shadowed several different physicians)

Similar question was asked earlier with not much response.

I went a little more in depth about some of my history but that's it.

had my interview yesterday... i'll share a little bit about my experience. i'm sure phlame will have more to add later.

8am- orientation shenanigans, getting to know some people, getting to know other prospective students, etc.

9-noonish- interviews took place. each candidate met with 2 faculty for appx 35 minutes. i interviewed with a surgeon and a microbiologist. they asked me questions about my application packet. while i was answering their initial questions, they would stop me and probe deeper into some of the things i was saying. for example, i was taking about my personal statement when the stopped me and wanted to know more specifically about certain things that contributed to me wanting to be a physician. it was a pretty non stress interview. basically they just wanted to get an idea of what kind of person i was and their questions underscored their attempt to see what my personal motivations and values are.

they didnt ask the typical, "why do you wanna be a doc" questions which kinda surprised me. the did however aks some of those funky, fun interview questions like, if you could pick someone to be the TIME mag man of the year, who would it be and why...

the interviewers have access to your aacomas app, supp, PS, and letters. they dont see your stats till after they meet you and get to know you.

i think everyone who interviewed today had a pretty positive experience. everyone had good things to say about their experience during the interview so if you have an upcoming interview- rest assured, it's pretty stress free! its about as stressful as having a conversation with a friend's mom or dad about med school.

12ish to 1ish- food. chicken, rice, grilled vegetables, cake, salad.

1ish to 2:30ish- tour, curriculum briefing, financial aid briefing, QandA.

---

decisions within two weeks. phone calls and fat UPS letter to the lucky ones, thin white envelope to the unlucky ones (no phone call).

feel free to PM me.

good luck to those interviewing in 5 1/2 hours!

i should probably go to bed.

everything you said was spot on other than the fact you didn't mention all the opportunities for questions lol.

Interviewed today, no hard ethical questions. Only one what if... Question. Really low stress interview mostly just trying to get to know you.

Overall experience was positive and in line with what's been described above. Top notch school and I'm very impressed. Very low stress interview. My interview had quite a few "What would you do in this situation?" type questions, including two ethics scenarios.

I'll leave feedback as long as SDN doesn't flake out on me like the last time I tried to leave interview feedback.

What did you guys say to the "who would you elect at TIME's person of the year" question?

Didn't get that one. Also thought I'd post that one of the interviewees didn't show, don't know if they called to cancel (didn't seem like it) or was just a no show.

wow so was it one interviewer for a group? Seems like they'd have a back up plan. Oh well, no biggee. I can wait for November to roll around... sigh

Sorry, meant one of the applicants didn't show

ohhh, from UCO or where? We had a list of all the day's applicants.

I personally found it weird that I only had one deep intellectual question, the one about a non compliant patient. But I like the idea of John Wayne as the times man.

What? Did they save all those questions for me? I'm beginning to wonder judging from what some other people have told me about their interviews 😉. I didn't mind, though. They were actually pretty interesting questions to answer.

I had a really great time at the interview yesterday. I enjoyed everyone that I came in contact with, from the interviewers, to the staff, to my fellow interviewees. I hope I get too see you all again next August!

They save all those tough ones for the smart candidates that can answer properly, like you

either that or I gave off the aura so there was no doubt and they didn't need to question me... lol. Honestly I think we just lost track of time because they kept digging into my research and therefore didn't have time to ask. oh well.

Got my interview today!!!!!!!!! Woo-hoo!!! Some questions for ya'll:

1. The closest airport is in OKC right? How far is OKC from Tulsa? Did you guys rent a car or what?
2. Lodging for the interview? What hotels are closest/have the best rates/have discounts for interviewees?
3. What other advice pertaining to travel details does anyone wish to share?

Thanks a lot!

The closest airport is Tulsa. United flies some cheap fares into Tulsa. Especially from Dallas and Denver. Drive time from Tulsa airport to the school is 20 minutes or less. Don't depend on Tulsa bus routes - almost non-existent.

Heres what i recommend:

Fly to tulsa and back.

You can stay at the Doubletree which is down town and approximately 4 miles or so from the campus and they have a shuttle to take you back and forth between the hotel and school. I don't know if they have a shuttle that takes you to the airport though.

If you prefer to rent a car and stay cheaper, theres a best western that shuttles between the airport and the hotel, so that would be easy and the hotel is kind of dated, but clean and cheap. Its where i stayed for my interview and I got what I payed for. With this option, though, you'd need to figure out a way to the school.

I wouldn't recommend the OKC option becuase its an hour and half drive from OKC to Tulsa and just overall would be easier to stay in Tulsa.

Congrats by the way and if you have anymore questions, feel free to PM.

BTW i looked at the older thread and it took 15 days for the acceptance calls to go out from their first round interviews which means we should be pretty on the spot with what they're saying about two weeks for the committee to meet and then the next day for calls to go out. So... here I come November 6th!

Just got the call......Interview Friday Nov 13th. Extremely excited. Good luck to everyone.

Congrats! Where are you from and what are your stats

I live in OKC but I'm originally from Tulsa. I have some pretty weak stats so Im fairly surprised by the early invite. GPA is a 3.42, BCPM is 3.0 with a 27 MCAT. I have some good medical experience though so maybe that helped out.

Does anyone know where to find some good stats on OSUCOM? Such as how many are interviewed/matriculate that type of stuff?

Hey DrMom, whats your opinion on the hospital issue and stuff that went on last year at this point in time? Do you think there is still much to worry about?

That's not a fair question to ask her. She works there now and everyone knows her SDN id.
