OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, it's the last month of normal interviews so I'd imagine it'll be pretty soon.

Speaking of which, it's month no. 5 on the waitlist for me. Quite a wait

Phange, I can't imagine what you have gone through. My interview on Feb. 18 was my first med-school interview ever, and I am already losing it having to wait to know something.

Spoke with Sarah Quinten today and she said that there are interviews next week and that they will meet the following week for decisions. Looks like another two weeks on the waitlist for me🙁

I got the call yesterday! Class of 2015!

At least last year I had fairly quick closure. Interviewed in March and cut off the waitlist in May. Having interviewed in November, it's hard to believe I've been on this thing for half a year.

But Chi O got in, and she'd been on it since October so maybe there's hope!

😀

Chi O, you deserve this acceptance for pure determination if nothing else. Is this REALLY your 5th application cycle?

PS: If I ever get a terminal disease, I want you as my doctor

You deserve it!! I looked at your old posts (nosy- aren't I?!) and you have been through alot. Congrats!!! 🙂

Congrats Chi O you definitely deserve it, caligirl made me look 🙂

You read correctly, this was my fifth (and final, thank goodness!) application cycle. I interviewed and was waitlisted each time before this.

During my interview this year, they asked what was the hardest/most stressful thing I have ever gone through, and I answered without hesitation, five years of applying to medical school 🙂

I raised my MCAT score 5 points last April, and I think that's what made all the difference for me this year. Plus I worked with a professional on interviewing skills, by this time I knew that nothing could hurt.

Thanks for all the congrats, I am so excited to finally have this dream come true!

Congrats, you definitely paid your dues.

Congrats to all those accepted! I hope to be joining you soon, as OSU-COM is my #1 choice for next cycle. Just a quick question; Do you think I would have a decent shot at getting accepted with:

3.59cGPA
3.44sGPA
28M MCAT (11PS, 8VR, 9BS)
Average ECs
(In-state)

Yes and no. OSU does a whole person view, they offer interviews based on a combo of stats, EC's, etc... Not like OU who has a fricking formula to let you in lol

Anyways, a big weakness in a lot of applicants is clinical experience. Be sure to have plenty of shadowing under your belt (IMO minimum 55-60 hours, ideal >100 hrs). Also, know that you will need a DO letter of recommendation. Best to be from a Doctor with whom you have a strong repore (sp?) with.

Any specifics, feel free to pm me.

i second that, start raking in the shadowing/clinical experience
good luck!🙂

Welcome to the waitlist. This is my second year on it, so trust me when I say "be patient"

Got an email with the lists of applicants interviewing tomorrow through friday, 4 days in one week! Wow!

Anyways, tomorrow is going to be black Tuesday for the 1st years. Its out 2nd Neuro test and its already kicking butts and taking names, we had 30 out of 109 people in class today... minus the grad students puts us at ~10 medical students lol.

Don't let our demeanor affect you tomorrow...

I have an interview this Friday, the 11th of march and if you can't tell I am nervous. I could use a little guidance as to how to prepare and what NOT to do before I got there and make a fool out of myself....

Be yourself, Don't lie, Be genuine, umm just enjoy the conversation. Not sure if you have interviewed elsewhere, but OSU is extremely laid back and believes in the conversational over dinner style of interview vs the grill them and kill them kind.

Friday is going to be another hell of a day. Been hitting Neurology so hard for the past week for the test tomorrow, and then have Tuesday evening through Thursday Evening (3 days) to cover ~20 Virology lectures and memorize about ~30 virii geni and associate information so Friday will be another tense day for the 1st years, let alone this whole week.

Anyways, back on topic. Know your application. They will ask you about activities or more information on said activities. I hope you didn't fudge much on that area. But realize its closed note. They do not have your MCAT scores or your GPA/Academics. They only have your EC's and such.

Any more specifics, PM me.

Congrats and good luck! Review your app, know your extracurricular activities and personal statement. I found the interview feedback on SDN to be pretty accurate regarding the types of questions they ask. :xf:

And yes they really are extremely laid back, we laughed so much during my interview I forgot it was an interview. It helps to know that it's closed file bc you can go in, be confident and excited and get asked about your clinical experience/ school activities and not worry about being grilled over grades or scores

I did hear the same from my friends that got in. I was trying to find the interview questions page, but i haven't found it yet. could you please be kind enough to show me where the interview discussion is?

Look four posts up from this post to my last post for interview info.

lol, just realized i pretty much rehashed what you had already said!!

but yea phlame has the link up above.

Vofvars: I just looked at the interview feedback the night before. dont over do it either, dont want to sound rehearsed. Have an idea of how you want to answer the typical "what are the top problems with health care" and "tell us about yourself/why are you here/ why do you want to attend our school/be a doc" but other than that the odd-ball questions are going to change from person to person (for them to see how you react when you have to think on your feet), its fine to pause- shows you're really thinking not just regurgitating something you rehearsed.

good luck to you and everyone else interviewing this week!!! Let us know how it goes!

Thank you very much, I have a tendency to talk faster when I am nervous. I was wondering if the evidence of prior practice or preparation within my interview would hurt my chances?

I would just say not to have a scripted answer to everything, but I don't think it would hurt to be able to articulate why you want to be a doctor, or where you see yourself in 10 years.

They are there to insure you are human. Only robots or robot like sentient beings will repeat verbatim information therefore you have a high chance of appearing non-human if you script everything. ... ......

Anyways, the interview feedback is there to give you the types of questions ask for you to "thoughtfully" prepare yourself for similar questions, not to memorize lines for the acting interview. I'll repeat, be genuine and honest and succinct and you will do alright. I hope you have done a job interview at least once in your life, as this will.... be nothing like it.

Hope my comments will aid you and that you will get a kick out of my humor!

phlaaazamme you make me

vofvars, i am the worst interviewee EVER, (ask my pre-med committee- they tore me to peices), i talk fast, im too quiet, and mumble but at OSU they really made me feel comfortable/relaxed. They are going to be nice, smile at your comments, and nod(in approval) at what you have to say... (again not like pre-med committee interviews where they stare you down and show no sign of emotion) so relax you're going to have fun!

Hahaha! Relax, you can't be as bad as me. I've interviewed seven times and have never been accepted

I save all my rejection letters so I can frame them and put them in the wall of my office when I'm finally a doctor 😀

Never give up, always improve, and you'll never fail.

Bahahah!
I must say that after reading you responses I am much relaxed and have a smile as I type this, it could also be because Its finally sinking in that I have an interview. I am excited, scared, anxious the whole 9 yards of emotions and I know I will feel better when its over.

Don't be, this was by far the least intimidating interview I had. By the end you'll feel like family, not sure how they make that happen in a single day but they do.

I guess I could call the school but I figured one of you might know:

If you applied for the bridge program but got in through the traditional program do you need to withdraw your bridge app? Do they automatically do it for you?

+1... I felt like I belonged there almost 30 minutes after arriving. It was kind of like magic I think haha

They know who they have accepted and will withdraw your name. It wouldn't hurt to call them but my bet is they already have pulled you from the bridge application list

I'm currently applying to the Bridge Program ONLY, and waiting to hear about getting an interview.

The only news I can offer is that I talked to Lindsey briefly last Friday (one week ago) and she said the calls for interviews will be in a couple of weeks. So, that will be sometime after Spring Break I assume. Anyone in the same boat or have have any info.?

My undisclosed MCAT is considerably low (was pregnant when I took it-very distracted and sick), but I have a cGPA of 3.76+ and a sGPA of 3.91+. My lower grades were only at the beginning, and I have a straight "A" stretch for the last approx. 150 credit hours of the almost 176 credit hours total. I completed a Health Science Bachelors in May 2009 (similar focus as the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in OSU-COM's curriculum). I have extensive shadowing, extensive community involvement, and extensive volunteering; great recommendations; moderate patient/work experience; and have taken the following post Bachelor's upper division courses: Immunology, Cell Biology, Medical Microbiology (A's) and am enrolled in Biochemistry, and Histology (will definitely maintain my current A).

I just had a baby last Nov. (still got A's that semester). The Bridge Program will be better for me and my family. I also meet two of the three areas of disadvantage. Anyone have any insight or want to share their stats? The Bridge allows for lower MCATs. It seems like I would be a perfect candidate. Any thoughts? I didn't post this on "what are my chances" because the program I'm applying for is specific to OSU-COM.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and hopefully offering constructive feedback.

Good luck, Mama, I hope we get to attend school together. I've enjoyed having you in the undergrad classes that we had together.

Ditto, EdLong!

I've spent a lot of time reading the posts for OSU-COM this year and last. I finally posted myself! A lot of pent-up thoughts resulted in a massive purge of a post!

I have already interview for the traditional route, but I am also applying to the Bridge Program as well. My MCAT wasn't really good, but not bad either. My GPA is a little lower than yours but like you, I had bad grade very early and since then, I have done really well. I did well in my MPH program as well, which I am finishing this May. I also meet two of the criteria for the bridge. Just have to wait and see if I get an interview.

For those applying to the bridge, I currently am in the bridge class and will be joining the MS1 class this fall. Yes the bridge class allows lower GPA's,MCAT's a shot at med school. Now with The bridge it is very competitive as there are only 9 acceptances a year with a heavy in state preference. Yes you do have more time than MS1's but to not retake a class you have to make a 85 otherwise you just retake. Best of luck and I am sure phone calls will go out in the next week or two. It was spring break last year when they called and offered me an interview.

Thanks so much for the info!! It's hard to be patient and wait this time of the year!!

I was just accepted at OU-COM; thanks to all of you for the kind words and support, but an acceptance is much better than my status as a waitlisted applicant at OSU. I hope all of you get in!

In a related note: AHHHHHHHHHHH OSU freakin let me in!!!!! OOS so I am probably gonna be waiting a while 🙁
