PCOM Biomedical Sciences 2019-2022

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did you submit your MCAT to GradCAS or PCOM directly? I applied for their DO program, but i'm also applying for the masters in case I don't get in. They have my MCAT already bc of the DO application, but I'm not sure how to send it for this, or if I even need to.
My entire application was just finished today actually. MCAT score must be emailed to them I believe for masters with a verification code (i.e. print score report on AAMC.) I hope that helps and good luck!

can anyone report on how strict are they with the mcat requirements in transitioning to the DO school? On their website it says a minimum of 40th percentile in each section. Are those who have lower scores in some sections planning to retake the mcat?

PCOM's entire philosophy is based on "treating the whole person." That also translates into everything, even their application process, I believe there are no cutoffs. They tend to make a decision on the entire application. Congrats @tongan_mom!! I only applied to Philly. I also have the $250 on my application portal. I believe that means I have been accepted.

I think for the conditional acceptance, they are strict with the MCAT cutoff 🙁
Admissions told me they don’t super score

Yes, conditional acceptance does have specific requirements. But after the foundation year, you can do the MCAT prep school provides with KAPLAN. Work on it, I believe you have to get 50th percentile. Which means 500 I hope, 3.3 GPA, 3.2 sGPA. Ace the interview, which can be done in theory with preparation. My point was they give you a chance to prove yourself without the MCAT cutoff for the masters.

My gpa’s are embarrassingly low but if it gives hope to those who are wanting a second chance at an Smp here’s my stats: overall 2.5, science 2.2, postbacc 20 credits 3.8 and Mcat 491-123/122/123/123. I’m retaking my Mcat next month and have been averaging 505 on practice exams so I’m hopeful I can at least get that out of the way before starting up the smp.
I have to retake my MCAT too, since it was taken in May 2017. I got a 505, I am going to try to take it before I start.

Hey guys. It's been awhile since I've made a comment or post on SDN, but I was recently accepted into both PCOM locations in PA and GA (Suwanee). I received my acceptance in the mail as of yesterday evening (surprising to me how fast they accepted me, considering how abysmal my MCAT is lol). PCOM has always caught my interest outside of most DO schools. I'm strongly considering it, but I'm keeping my options open with the other SMP/Postbacc programs I'm currently applying to at the moment (Drexel, VCOM, Touro, and Temple).

My only concern now is, I would love to do the Year 1 track exclusively, but my sGPA is 3.13, not a 3.2, as dictated on their Biomedical Sciences Candidates site. Do you think Admission would make a consideration to qualify for the Year 1 track if I meet the rest of their requirements ? How does selecting/qualifying for a Year 1/ Year 2 work with PCOM's admissions? Any advice from previous students would be greatly appreciated.

They take your first semester Master classes into consideration when calculating your sGPA

Oh I see, I presumed it was a preliminary requirement before matriculating into the program. Alright, that gives me some hope I haven't failed before I began lol. I just need to rethink my strategy with the MCAT this upcoming year.

If you don't meet the conditional acceptance requirements of the overall AACOMAS sgpa of 3.2 but meet all the requirements for guaranteed interview is it likely to still get in if your masters gpa is good?

Someone correct me please if I'm wrong but I think if you want to do the one year track and matriculate to med school after, they would require you to have an AACOMAS sGPA of 3.2 by Dec.1 so only fall semester grades would be included but if you elect to do the two year track then they would only focus on your masters GPA

You would still have to keep your GPA for the foundation year above 3.2 and finish the masters successfully I believe.

SO then how does the guaranteed interview work? And what is the difference between the two tracks? B/c you can still get a guaranteed interview without the overall sgpa for AACOMAS being a 3.2, but need the sgpa for the conditional acceptance. Sorry just trying to understand the process since there's no proper information on their website.

Because on the website it states "Biomedical sciences students who are accepted into the DO program via the guaranteed interview process must successfully complete their current year of the biomedical sciences program earning a grade of “B” or better in each course and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. If these conditions are not met, the acceptance may be revoked." Meaning it is possible to get in through the guaranteed interview process right?

In theory, you can get accepted after the interview. Most SMPs only do a guaranteed interview if you meet certain criteria (Drexel IMS, Georgetown, etc). This is usually for students who do not manage to bring their MCAT score up to 50th percentile. That way an interview is given and a chance to get acceptance.

So since my score is a 505 most likely I would have to complete both years if by Dec 1st I don't meet the requirements of the conditional acceptance?

You have to submit an application by Dec 1st. They will most likely look at our fall and winter grades. Based on that, give us an interview then a conditional acceptance. You just have to maintain your GPA at that point for the spring semester. Then start DO school fall 2021. This is the best-case scenario.

I have to retake my MCAT...this should be fun!

Thanks! I guess it's just a gamble whether you get in through the guaranteed interview or make the gpa for conditional acceptance and then kill the interview and all from there or finish the second year/ finish year 1 with the certificate. I just wish their website had some better details on the process. But thanks for patiently explaining!

Not a gamble at all, just a LOTTT of hard work to maintain that GPA! That's it. Assuming one meets the MCAT and sGPA requirement.

Yea I guess for me it's that whole guaranteed interview vs. conditional acceptance b/c they have different requirements and some old threads were saying some bad stuff about the guaranteed interview process and it all just confused me haha. But you're right! Just a lot of hard work and when we make it to DO school it'll be worth it!

I'm so sorry about that! But you'll crush it again and at least the program has ties with Kaplan!
In regards to the Kaplan program, the MCAT requirement and he 1 yr track. Same with the sGPA requirement, we have to meet the 50th percentile before the 1 year mark or before we enter the program ? That's another part of my application that is lacking and participating in the Kaplan course with other cohorts would be amazing.

I would take it before going into the SMP for DO matriculation after foundational year 1. You don't want to study for MCAT while you are taking SMP classes. In theory, you can take the exam in Spring 2021 and submit your MCAT scores. That's just my opinion tho.

I emailed admissions as I was also confused ha and here’s their reply
“We have the two policies to try to help everyone. If you meet the conditional acceptance requirements and receive a favorable interview you will gain a seat within the DO class in which you applied. Not everyone meets the requirements for that policy, we also offer the guaranteed interview policy; which more of our Biomeds meet and they will have the opportunity to interview for a seat within the DO class in which they have applied. Most of the Biomeds that are enrolled in the DO program was accepted from the "guaranteed interview" policy. “

Hey guys so I have a 2.66 cGPA and around a 2.45 sGPA. I have TONS of experience in a hospital setting and directly work with high acuity patients atm, I have also devoted a lot of time to Free Clinics as well as mentoring inner-city children. I have also done Oncology research for 1.5 years. My MCAT score was a 498 (3rd time), but I will retake it. My PS is solid and I have 5 rec letters. You think I have a chance at any campus?

Your ECs are competitive. I think if you get above 500 to offset the sub 3.0 GPA - you’d be a great candidate

Should I apply now to the program or after my MCAT retake? I wanted to retake the MCAT in the program if I get in because they provide MCAT prep, which is really helpful! My MCAT was a 125/122/124/127! I hate CARS lol I do not want to apply late to the program and have it fill up, yanno? Also, I did a pharmacology minor and got a 3.957 in it, and it was all masters level classes.

Thank you! Did they mention anything about how many get in after completing just the first year?

Fatima was the one I emailed and she said, “It varies. Last year we enrolled 21-23 between here and South Georgia.”

I don’t know though how many students in total qualified for the interview.

South Georgia has its own 4-year DO program too, as a PCOM Biomed we can apply to all three campuses. Also, any other DO programs would look at this SMP favorably.

Only take the MCAT after you know it will be the last time you EVER take it again. @Cooper1990 mentioned PCOM does NOT superscore. They will look at your older scores. That being said, study immensely and finish with a SOLID score! You can get in with your stats. They accept a lot of students up to March. I would not take the MCAT before the program, which you can do. Good luck!

Hello everyone! Super excited to see people getting accepted for the cycle I am applying for because I have been watching this thread for so long lol! I am planning on completing the components for my application by December 20th since that is when grades for this semester are released. With that being said, how long did it take for your application to show as completed after sending everything in? I am sooo nervous and want to find out if I am accepted as soon as I can.

And for everyone with low stats/ taking the gre I have a 2.78 cGPA (but should be a 3.0 after this semester) and scored 151 verbal, 148 quant, and haven't gotten my writing score back yet. Low on both ends but I am hoping my last year of coursework is what can get me in since I have made 4.0 for the last 4 semesters. Wish me luck!

I submitted my application on October 14th. Everything was received by the 18th, and completed on GradCAS. My portal was the only thing not being updated, but admission had all my documents processed by Nov 1st I would say. Then acceptance on Dec 5th. Good luck!

My stats are 3.24 GPA, 3.4 sGPA. The last 50 hours were straight A's. 505 MCAT (127/127/124/127)- I have to retake it since this is too old now. Wish me luck, @Cooper1990 mentioned PCOM does not use supers core.
Your stats are good. Why do a SMP? Have you applied to DO schools before? I bet you get in somewhere.
