PCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know the adcom only meets once a month. Does anybody know when their next meeting will be??

Really? So when would they notify those who are granted interviews this time around?

I called PCOM yesterday and they told me the adcom meets today. I want to try my damnedest to get the admissions guy to tell me my status even though he has already said VERY clearly 'Under no circumstances do we give your status over the phone'. I can't wait over Thanksgiving! It's going to kill me. Waiting game sucks.

Great to hear that the adcom meets today. Maybe a letter on Friday?? I interviewed at the end of Oct and I've been anxiously awaiting a response as well.

When I interviewed the admissions woman told us "You will probably hear from us before Thanksgiving, but if not, then definitely after." The process is torturous my friend.

Hopefully good news comes both our ways! Good Luck!

It is torture! They told me at my interview in plain english 'You will hear from us in 3 to 4 weeks'. So of course I started getting antsy around 2!

Good luck to you as well! I hope we both find some good news in the mail after Thanksgiving! :luck::luck::luck:

Was anyone allowed to submit a different LOR in place of the pre-med committee/dean LOR?

Please forgive my ignorance: does PCOM ask for a LOR from the dean of your school only if the school does not write committee LORs? I could not find anything on PCOMs admissions page about dean LORs. Thanks for the help.

PCOM requires a letter of good standing from your undergraduate institution. So if you got a pre-med letter from a different place other than your undergrad (my case) you need a good standing letter from a dean of your undergrad place.

You did it Lednerg!! I saw you on the acceptance thread. CONGRATS!!!! I am so excited for you!! I am out of town for Thanksgiving so hopefully there will be some good news in my mailbox when I get home tonight! 😀

Remember to relax... don't tackle the mailman tomorrow.

Oooooooooh that bitch better watch his back!! 😉

I'm hoping it's already waiting in the mail for me when I get back into town so it won't have to come to that. 🙂

Interviewed back beginning of november. Just got the acceptance in yesterday. G'luck to the other hopefulls.

what are pcoms mcat/gpa averages for 2006. i checked the website and they give 2004 info.

Whoooooo Hoooooooooo I got in! The letter was waiting for me when I got home! So excited! 😀😀😀

Me: Alright I'm going to go check the mail. There better be a letter from PCOM in there because I have been dying. If it's just junk mail I will be so pissed off.

Roommate: You should burn it.

Me: What?

Roommate: Well it might make you feel better to burn the junk mail.

Me: Dude you're weird.

Roommate: So does that mean we're not burning the mail?

Congrats doc1!!

So the 2008 USNews rankings are out. I think a few years ago 37% of PCOM students went into primary care now its 49% why such a big change? Doesn't matter to me b/c im interested in primary care and PCOM is a great school.

http://grad-schools.usnews.rankings.../webextras/brief/sb_med_primarycare_brief.php

These numbers change every year depending on the class. Also, does this data take into account how many graduates enter into a residency and then complete a subspecialty fellowship (Cardio, Nepro, ID, etc.). I doubt it. 😕😕

Either way, don't pick a school solely on match lists. And you never know, in ~5-? years when you graduate med school the percentage could drop back to 30% or go up to 70%. 😱

i think you were my tour guide for the open house, you were with the girl. When we were in the OMM lab some kid's dad was firing off questions about the HMO's and OMM.

ask them WHEN MY INTERVIEW IS!??!?? or if i get one at all? j/k

HAHAA Hilarious. Yea that guy was getting on my nerves. I tried to handle it without getting rude. Damn open houses are suppose to be laid back...*sigh* 😡

Yo PM me your name and stuff, i'll see what i can do.

WoW!!

What's worse than an anal premed? An anal premed dad!!

A few years back PCOM was consistently top 10 specialty powerhouse, MD/DO inclusive

It does vary by class and no, it does not include all those cute arrangements we DOs can have (transitional year, etc) where people will go into specialties later on and are currently not listed as specialties.

Someone brought their dad to the open house? 😱 When I took the MCAT some kid was there with his dad, I felt so embarrassed for him.

I've been complete there for over a month. I noticed I made a dumb mistake in my essay. So, I'm feeling kinda passed over now. 🙁

You've got to be ****ting me. If I ever have a kid who wants to go to medical school, and I decide that I want to go with him or her to the MCAT, I hope he shoots me.

I want to state for the record here and now that I have never been to a med school open house and my kid has not taken the MCAT yet. Furthermore she will take the MCAT approximately 300 miles from my front door. In addition I did not go with her on her undergrad campus visit.

Even I have limits!

:laugh: For a second there I thought you were one of the parents who showed up to the open house. whew.

What makes things worse, is when the parents ask more questions than their child. The dad that showed up to PCOM was a MD and I guess wanted to take his frustation out on me. It was a crazy tour. :scared:

A few weeks ago I read a post from 2005 about some girl who had her Mom go with her to all her interviews. Her Mom was there to help her with travel plans, organize everything, meals, clothing neat and give some tips, etc.

I don't think her Mom actually went to the school but she did stay at the hotel. I thought it was really lame, but everyone in the thread thought it was so wonderful. -Moustafa

Acutally, now I think about it. A couple of days before I shipped out for basic infantry training at Ft.Benning, my mother asked me if I wanted to take my TV. She was totally serious.

My Dad and I just snickered.

I would so bring my dad to the open house if he agreed to pay for medical school for me. Heck I would tell him to ask all the anal questions he wants. Unfortunately that is not the case and he has only been there once for the white coat ceremony

just turned in the whapping $250 deposit...i'm set till april...whewwhoo

any delaware residents here? i applied really late, but hope things work out.

my interview at PCOM-pa is on monday. any tips or suggestions? I'm not too nervous as I was already accepted to LECOM-erie after my interview, which I thought was alright. but PCOM is my top choice so I want to wow them.

do they ask hard questions? LECOM has a standard list they ask everyone so I was already prepared. thanks for the help!

I'm also interviewing on Monday. How long do you think it will take for us to hear back post-interview? Hopefully soon b/c then I don't have to pay my deposit for the other schools i've been accepted to.

I'm a little confused about this extra 1 year rotation for PCOM students. I know that PA is 1 of the 5 states that require D.O.'s to do an extra year of rotations but isn't that if you want a residency in PA? This is what the PCOM website says (sounds like all PCOM graduates are required):

Q. What is the scope of an osteopathic medical education?
A. Graduates are required to complete a one-year rotating internship in a hospital approved for osteopathic training. They may move on to residency programs at almost any osteopathic or allopathic institution. In seeking residencies, graduates benefit from PCOM's many resources and affiliations in Philadelphia and across the country.

The average time frame is 3 weeks. You should have a letter before Christmas breaks starts.

PCOM graduates are not required. You only have to do the RI if you want to come back and practice in PA, FL, etc.

Any DOs who want an unrestricted license to practice osteopathic medicine in the states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Florida, Oklahoma, and West Virgina must complete an AOA-approved internship year.

There are several ways to go about this. One is to do a purely rotating osteopathic intern year (and then go on to residency, whether osteopathic or allopathic). Another is to do an osteopathic residency in which the intern year is incorporated into its first year.

The third option is to do an allopathic residency, and have the intern year count as an AOA-approved intern year via Resolution 42 (you can search SDN or google for more info).

That's the extra "year" that you are referring to, a postgraduate internship year that must be AOA-approved if you want licensure in 5 states.

*there is another option .... asking the state board of osteopathic medicine to individually approved your intern year and grant you licensure but procedures and rules varies from state to state.

It is only required for licensure in PA. If you plan to go out of state dont worry. it doesnt matter if you do an oestopathic or dually accredit recidency (its included). It is fairly easy to get your allopathic internship year approved if you plan ahead.
