PCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all I am a new poster here... but I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they plan to arrive around their interview time at PCOM... or much earlier?

There was no arrival time specified in my email from PCOM... only the interview time.

I had called the admissions office and they said to arrive around your interview time- however I didn't get the feeling this person was completely sure.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated- Thanks!🙂

If your interview is between 2-4:30, show up at 12 to have lunch and get a tour at 1. If you don't want to, show up at 2.

If your interview is between 9-11:30, show up at 8 am to go to breakfast and stay until 12 to get a tour.

Thanks for the responses!

The only thing is that they didn't mention the breakfast that everyone seems to speak about- they did however mention a lunch at 12...

I guess I will just show up at 8am- and just wait if needed

If the letter says lunch at 12. Then your interview is between 2-4:30...which also means lunch at 12 and tour at 1pm.

just got into pcom-philly..
i know that as an ostepathic school pcom focues on COMLEX but how do pcom students do on the USMLE? does pcom prepare you for the USMLEs?

MS - 2012 as of today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To both DocLove 06 and Reaton, look forward to possibly meeting you in the future.

DocLove I only think they kept track of COMLEX performance since that is the one that matters. A lot a students take the USMLE though, so if you get the chance to speak to some of the upperclassmen first hand then you'll get a good idea of their performance.

Congrats DocLove06 and Reaton!

I was complete in mid/late November.. when do you guys think i will hear back from PCOM-Philly??

thanks utailor2! its going to take sometime b/c from my understanding PCOM receives the most applications out of all D.O. schools. Out of curiosity why did you apply late? Has anyone recently received an interview from PCOM? When were you complete? I wish you all the best utailor2

hey guys, i just wanted to thank everyone for all the information (both informative and entertaining) and that it helped a lot with all of the applications that i just got done completing

that being said i got my acceptance to pcom on the 14th and i absolutely cannot wait to join everyone in the fall

Is anyone still waiting for a PCOM interview? When were you complete? How long does it take from being complete until getting an interview invite?..is it getting kinda late??

neolium, I have the same question. I am losing my mind. I would give my first-born to PCOM if they gave me an interview. And my second-born if they let me in. But seriously, how long does it take at this point in the cycle for them to send out invites?

haha thats hilarious! When were you complete?

I think I've been complete for four weeks by now. I'm not even sure. I called them and they told me that I'm complete over the phone. I don't know how long before the phone conversation that happened. Not more than four weeks...you?

Hmm ok.. I applied kind of late because I had already been accepted to my state DO school as well as an MD school pretty early (in Oct) so I just stopped filling out any more secondaries. I did some research into PCOM and heard from a lot of people that its one of the top DO schools so I started to gain interest in the school and decided that I would really like to go there. That's when I decided to apply. I was complete mid Nov. Hopefully, some luck comes my way really soon!

That is good to hear! Thanks MaximusD

I was complete the second week of October and just got notification of the interview invite last week.

I just got an interview invite today 🙂 for the end of January. Unfortunately, it is too far away where I have to put down $1500 for my acceptance at NYCOM 😱 However, I have heard such wonderful things about PCOM that I will forget about 1500 big ones in a heartbeat if it is awesome as it sounds. I am really looking forward to visiting 😀

FYI - I was complete in the middle of October and I am an OOS applicant (NY). The doctor I shadowed is an alumnus of PCOM and has been calling them (I told him he didn't have to, embarassing haha). I doubt this had anything to do with it though. I think they just have tons of apps, so hang in there everyone!! 🙂

I was complete in early October and just got my interview invite today. (I'm also OOS). It's too bad I just mailed a deposit to another school today...I'm trying to look at it as an investment. If I get into PCOM, I will probably go!! Good luck everyone else.

I know u guys are prolly getting sick of this, but I'm starting to trip out now that it's been 2 whole months since I was complete at PCOM. When they first looked at my profile, this is what they would've seen:

Sci GPA = 3.26
Cum GPA = 3.59
MCAT = 11,8,8
*No physician LOR. It was stated as "highly recommended" so I forwarded my other LOR's while waiting for my Dr. to send in his letter. I have since submitted a DO LOR (beginning of Dec.) after several months of shadowing. I emailed them an update about this.

In the meantime, I also took extra undergrad courses, even tho I already have a bachelor's. In 2 wks, my stats will be:
Sci GPA = 3.33
Cum GPA = 3.6x
MCAT = 27Q
I am OOS.

I am now thinking of retaking the MCAT, since I've been scoring around 30 on old versions of MCAT exams. I took my first MCAT 2 yrs ago before I finished physics or organic. (bad idea.) Should I do this? I know the score may not officially count for this app cycle, but if I get a late interview & can show a new 30+ MCAT, this might help me.

Is this too much? I'm trying really hard to improve overall....I REALLY LOVE PCOM!! Ughh.

I don't mean to be blunt nadh but I think you're freaking out for nothing. I can tell how much you love PCOM and I realise that it has been 2 months since you were complete, but it took PCOM about that long to invite me for an interview. The get a record high of applicants so they are probably just sorting through everything. And you just had your DO LOR sent in which they seriously look at for those that do send it in (my interviewers at least told me that was the case); no news can be good news. Also, it's the holidays and I know that I havent heard anything since Thanksgiving and neither have a lot of my other applicant friends so it could just be a dead time for everyone.

More importantly, if it makes you feel any better, take a look at my MDApps profile then tell me if you need to take the MCAT again. I scored a few points lower than you and am now officially part of the 2012 class. You've got some really good stats and despite being an OOS, I think you have a great shot at getting in, especially if you expressed the enthusiasm in your application as you did in this post. Just be patient and keep updating them with any new changes in your academic or professional profile. Good luck! 😀

I had the same stats (roughly, mine were barely higher). Got acceptance then in.
To clarify: 27T, ~3.5 cum/science. No DO or MD LOR or shadowing experience. (was in EMS ~1.5 yrs though). You'll do fine.

i applied really late, anyone at PCOM right now that applied late? its my top choice and hope that delaware DIMER prog helps me out. any delawareans here?

Can someone answer the following questions?
1) Something I've heard about the state of PA requiring an extra year of XYX (yr of residency or something?).

2) PCOM having a very strong instate bias. If true, what can an OOS applicant do to increase the chance of getting an interview?

Thanks.

Pennsylvania is one of 5 states whose osteopathic licensing board requires completion of an AOA approved internship in order to gain licensure in that state.

Osteopathic residency programs in PA use the first year to fulfill that requirement, thus there is no need to complete additional training.

If you intend to complete an Allopathic residency program you may need to first complete a separate AOA-approved internship in order to fulfill the requirement to practice in Pennsylvania.

There has recently been some policy change in this matter but as of now it still is in effect. You can also research something titled Resolution 42 which is a means for DOs who do not wish to complete the additional year to petition the AOA to waive this requirement...certain conditions must be met.

I wouldnt say very strong. Each year 55-60% of the class seems to be from PA. There are certainly schools with a much strong IS preference, but being that PCOM is a private school there is less of this. PCOM does admit to an instate preference, but you also have to realize that a good percentage of applications are from PA...so the balance is shifted from the start.

Thanks for the info.
Regarding the answer to question #1, what if we decided not to get a license in PA and do residency in some other state? In such case I'm assuming one doesn't need to worry about this extra yr if pursuing an allo residency?

I noticed that the acceptance rate for OOS is 7.9% for PCOM. But, it is encouraging that about half of the entering class is OOS.

If you do not plan on practicing in PA, or one of the other 4 states that still have this requirement, then you do not have to worry about the additional year.

As said above, there are certain circumstances that can allow you to skip the AOA approved internship and still gain licensure.

Correct, just under half the PCOM DO class are OOS.

wasn't there talk of a doing away with the internship program?

wasn't there talk of a doing away with the internship program?

For next year there are some changes in the requirements that the internship programs must meet. The term "intern" is going to largely be replaced by "first year resident" in tracked PGY1 programs.

A practicing DO GS explained to me that the osteopathic traditional internship year was beneficial to GS residents because of all the medicine they learned on the various "rotations" they do. He implied that it serves them well once they're out in private practice handling different issues & it was an advantage DO's have in their training.

Do you agree?
Will the setup of that 1st year now change?
Do the 1st year PCOM GS residents spend time on different services, or is it all GS now?

I think that having some medicine as a PGY-1 is indeed beneficial. Right now we have 4 months of GS, 1 month FP, 1 month ER and 6 months of IM.

I dont think that the new setup will affect this TOO much as there are still requirements by the AOA to incorporate medicine months in the first year. I am still not sure what the curriculum will look like for next years PGY1s, but they will likely have more surgical months than we get now.

problem solved... its pretty easy: just call the friendly admissions staff 🙂

Just got an invite this morning.

Congratulations! When will you be interviewing?

I am interviewing on February 6th. I like their half day interview situation...I can actually go to work right afterwards! It all seems very efficient to me. I like that.

Does anyone know when they send out the binders to the accepted students? They said January but I didn't know about any specifics

If you sent in your deposit on Dec. 15th* to admissions, then you should get a binder sometime in January once Student Affairs gets all the information.
