Penn c/o 2016 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
😀 sweet I've been working in an reproductive biology for the past 2 years.. and my PI (wrote one of my eLORs and is pretty well known in the field) did his postdoc at UPenn 😎

*has new false sense of confidence*

I made this just for you! I had an inkling from your last sentence so I hope you understand this!!

And after 2+ years I still can't get my images to show up in SDN using their insert pic function 🙁 FAIL

So here is a link:

I finally got a letter in the regular mail today from the admissions office. It states that two of my transcripts have not arrived. This is odd because I had contacted them over a month ago to make certain that all my transcripts had arrived, and they listed the ones they had (which included these two they now state are missing). I guess they lost them. So as not to be a huge pain though, I will have them resent. I just hate for them to think that I was somehow remiss in having them sent in the first place....frustrating! (I know...probably the first of many frustrations of vet school, right?)

That is NOT what they are going to judge you on. Really. You will have plenty to obsess over in the process, this is not one of those things.

Breathe in......breathe out. .......breathe in..... breathe out.

And now enjoy the weekend.

Yeah, you're right. Thanks. You have a good one, too!

I'm still shocked by how quickly what I thought was my relatively-well-adjusted-psyche has crumbled into fatalistic pessimism so early in this process. For any others who are sweating out not receiving a Penn acknowledgement email, I just got mine today, so they are still going out. No need to panic yet.

I think I'm coming to accept that this is a long and stressful process. I have had the two transcripts "resent" and will just wait a couple of weeks to contact admissions to make certain they have them (again). In the meanwhile, let's enjoy Thanksgiving with our loved ones. It's a good season coming up to take our minds off of everything. We've put our best applications forward, and now it's out of our hands. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

just got my rejection e-mail today.
ehhh whatever.

Oh my gosh...that must have hurt. I'm sorry. I'll brace myself now, too.

Chin up, folks! I was rejected from CSU and VMRCVM in December and still managed to get in somewhere. Yes, it stung (a lot!), but there's still a long admissions process ahead!

Just a heads up that Penn strings its admissions process out for a loooong time...they fill up the class little by little, so you could have a long wait not hearing anything good or bad.
I commiserate with any of you who have to deal with that.
I am not sure which is worse.

Personally? The last two years they waited until LITERALLY the last minute to reject me. I'd rather know sooner. Then at least I have one less thing to worry about. Ya know?

But if they waited so late, that means that still considered you a possibility.

Thaowey....sorry to hear that. Penn has an unusual way of looking at things, so it doesn't really reflect on you too much!.

If you want to be all optimistic about it. 😉

Monty Python never fails to make me giggle.

oh no need to be sorry! surprisingly, i'm actually not that sad. i still have hope for the other schools i applied to, so i'm okay :]

GLuck to the rest of y'all Penn applicants!

SOV - thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I've had the day from H E double hockey sticks... After watching that I am happy to report that I am no longer homicidal. 👍

And thaowey, sorry to hear the news; but glad you're taking it so well. 🙂 As SOV said, this in no way reflects upon you. They're an interesting bunch over there... I'm actually quite surprised that I have yet to be kicked to the curb.

This is my second time applying...last year I received my rejection email at the end of February. We definitely have a long road ahead so don't worry just yet! Good luck everyone! :luck:

Sorry guys, do you know is it possible to change Penn interview date? I have Missouri interview on Jan 6 (and flights, hotels, etc are already booked and non-refundable), and now i got Penn interview invite at the same day. What can be admissions reaction on rescheduling request? I am afraid schools do not like it.

If you want, I can just take your interview slot instead! ;-)

That's a legitimate excuse and no one will be upset. Just email or call Roseanne Herpen and explain the situation. She'll help you. Good luck!

2 years ago they were very helpful with these requests, last year too many people tried it seems. Couldn't hurt to try..... I don't think they will hold it against you for asking.

Yea, last year I was "slapped on the wrist" by someone with admission committee contacts who is also friends with me because they were getting increased number of people trying to change their interview date. The theory was because I said that when I changed mine they were really nice about it. However, it seems last year people took advantage of this. I then yelled at everyone on SDN in hopes of reaching the few people who took advantage of the system haha.

So yea, if you have a LEGIT excuse, they will change the date for you. They understand if you booked another interview already that can't be changed.

However, once you get that second date you better tattoo it to yourself.

[to everyone else reading this thread]
Do not call to change it for stupid things!!! Even things that may seem "IMPT" in normal life do not matter when compared to an interview for vet school.

Does anyone (perhaps BlackKat) know approximately how many people they're interviewing this year?

Penn does not have a set number of people they interview. It is a sort of semi-rolling process. They interview in batches until they fill all the acceptances they plan (not sure if that number is available). They also give most acceptances shortly after the particular interview.

This is true. Another reason why some people don't hear back about a rejection/interview til late in the admission process.

If you're super curious you can estimate it by looking at how much interview dates they had in previous years. Each date has about 20-25 people interviewed. But keep in mind there may be some dates missing on SDN.

I've had an international trip planned for over a year and I'm not slated to return until the 9th. I called and spoke with Rosanne and was told that they cannot reschedule and that if I couldn't make it on the 6th, she couldn't guarantee that I'd get an interview at all. Perhaps they're not being as lenient anymore?

Now I have to find an extra $900 and lose three nights of prepaid hotel accommodations to try to get home 3 days early. In the grand scheme of things, it's not a huge deal, but my "Holy cats I got an interview!" excitement has quickly been replaced by frustration and downright sadness that I'm going to have spend money to cut short a trip I've been looking forward to for over a year.

Holy crap, in the scheme of things that is so a big deal. Over >$1000 in wasted money and the loss of several days of time abroad is not exactly petty. If they interview in batches I can't believe they wouldn't let people reschedule for things like being out of the country. Wow. How frustrating.

(...I'm not applying to Penn, just lurking and thought that that's a tad ridiculous).

Agreed. 👍

Sorry to hear about that sooprnova

I sent e-mail about interview rescheduling yesterday evening but have not got the answer yet. I am really scared now.

😳
Wow. That's harsh. I guess they've been taken advantage of before (by my class) and are more stringent this year. Sorry for the false hope. Let the prioritizing now commence

*sigh* even though it is 7pm and I know I am not getting an interview invite today... I am still checking my email every 5 minutes lol 🙁

Yeah, it's definitely frustrating, but I can understand wanting to eliminate the logistics of shuffling interview dates around. After talking with her and determining how much it would cost to change my plans, I emailed asking a final time if it could be changed. Then I chickened out and decided I didn't want to do anything that might jeopardize my chances of an acceptance, so I called and left a message telling her to ignore my email and that I'd see her on the 6th!

Penn is my absolutely top choice, in the "unicorns and butterflies and fuzzy kittens everywhere!" sort of way, and I don't want to be labeled as difficult before the interview even starts.

So now my flight's getting in at 10pm the Thursday before the interview. If everyone could PLEASE cross their fingers that I don't get stranded at some airport because of weather, making this all for naught, I'd appreciate it! 😀

Noooo. Don't do that! You'll make yourself crazy!

I know! I am going crazy I think...

I just want an interview with Penn SO BAD! 🙁

I know it is still just the beginning, and as long as I don't get a rejection then I am still in the running :xf:

I sent e-mail about interview rescheduling yesterday evening but have not got the answer yet. I am really scared now.

OK i got the answer:
"I cannot guarantee that I can reschedule your interview anytime during the process. If you cannot attend on Jan. 6th you may risk the opportunity of not being rescheduled. Your decision. Let me know. "
Apparently, interview with another school (scheduled and confirmed 2 weeks ago) is not legitimate reason anymore. Want to cry... 🙁

That really stinks, anutam. Sorry. 🙁

Hey, at least they're consistent. 😳

I'm right there with you! I must have checked my email at least 15 times after 5 o'clock even though I knew nothing would be there. I need to find something to keep me busy for the next few months...

I think I am going to start training for a half marathon... lol

Seems like a strange idea, but with all the stress of everything I have gained like 15 lbs since June (eating a giant bowl of frozen yogurt as I type this). I am legitimately too fat to get out of bed in the morning, 'beached whale status' as I like to call it. And so, as soon as finals end I think I am going to just start working out like crazy and hopefully it will take my mind off interviews.

If you have one near you (and have some extra cash laying around), I really recommend trying out a CrossFit gym. I started going to one in July and I love it. My weight has probably stayed the same, but I'm more muscle than I was before. I mainly go to keep the weight off that I lost from my year abroad and my bout of depression during the first semester of my senior year. I usually feel dead afterwards, but I find it really rewarding.

And on another related note, I'm freaking out right along with you guys. However, I have refrained from checking my email after 5 PM. Right now I'm kind of glad I lost my Android phone in March since I can't excessively check my email while at work on my AWESOME (not) flip phone from high school...

Thanks I will definitely check it out!! I pay monthly for a gym membership... havn't been since June :bang:

My boyfriend and I have been going to bikram yoga though and we LOVE it! So at least I have that going for me 😛

👍 From someone who just ran a fourth half-marathon on Sunday. I am going to go into zen-runner mode and tell everyone they should pick up distance running because it really is that relaxing.

This may be the most expensive option, but try calling the other school to re-schedule their interview. Perhaps they will be more flexible. You'd have to change your travel and hotel arrangements, so it will be pricey, but hey, no pain, no gain, right?
