Hi to all!

A quick question - do prelim programs need separate LORs? found previous discussions on PS but not LORs...

Thanks a lot

cheers and good luck!

when i applied to prelim years for the 2-3-4 programs, i used the same personal statement and same letters. i used 3 er letters and 0 medicine. one attending told me (he is at a 2-3-4 program), that they (the prelim programs) know that you aren't going into medicine so they don't care if you will make a good medicine resident. they just want to look for people who will work hard, get along with people, not cause problems for the year, etc. if you have good letters, then i would go ahead and use them regardless of who wrote them.

well-known prelim IM programs (e.g. Wash U/BJ) require a letter from the IM chair. low profile community hospitals for the most part do not.

What if all of you LOR's are SLOR's? can they still be used as prelim letters?

true, i only applied to low profile or at least "easy" prelim and transitional years.

i suggest going to an easy prelim program b/c your em1/pgy2 year will be tough. do you want two grueling internships?

that said, i am in a 3 year program and so i'm sure the 2-4 program residents may have different ideas. i did notice that at certain 2-4 programs (bu, gw) a lot of the residents did a "real" prelim year.
