Random AADSAS Questions: 2018-2019 Edition

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
USC specifically, I paid the fee right after I submitted my application. As for secondaries, its secondary will come if you are selected to interview (you bring your answers to the secondaries/other papers and turn them in on the day of your interview).
For other schools, usually you pay the fee right after you submit your primary app, if they don't have any secondaries. If they do, then those secondaries will be on a separate portal and you answer those questions/pay the fee through that separate portal-- LLU, Western, ASDOH, MWU AZ, LECOM are the ones I applied to that had this. You check your status with these portals too, not AADSAS. Boston, Tufts, UoP, and UCLA had an online website where it was only to pay the fee, and nothing else.

For anyone:
I applied to a range of schools (about 12), got 8 II, only attended 4 (the SoCal ones) and was accepted to all 4- UCLA, USC, Western, & LLU. Let me know if you have any specific questions about these schools!
Does it really matter who is the spiritual leader that provide the letter for LLU? I mean should the leader be a Christian?

No, I'm not Christian/Catholic/SDA and I was still accepted in. They just want to know that you're religious, doesn't matter what religion.
Thanks. Should it be from a leader in US?

Hi! Can I request an official paper transcript from my school and have it mailed to my house and then mail aadsas the sealed transcript plus the Transcript Request form myself? I can't find a specific answer to this question.
I personally think you should just send it to aadsas with the form in the letter already. I don't really see a reason why you can't to it yourself though; you might want to call and ask.

I definitely would’t mail it to yourself and then to AADSAS. It says they won’t accept transcripts that are sent to student, or modified in anyway. I would definitely have it sent straight to them. I had my school send me my official transcript, so that I can make sure that my grades are put in correctly as per the official transcript.

@Rayner15 is correct. The Transcript Matching Form specifically states that you yourself cannot send it to AADSAS. The official transcript must be directly mailed from your college's registrar to the transcript processing center. If you want, you can request an official copy be sent to your house just to see what it looks like if you're curious. That's what I did beforehand.

I’m planning to go to volunteering abroad for 3 weeks (already booked plane tickets and everything) and I’m wondering if I can put that in for the app now. Should I put it after my volunteering is all done? Also, then if I plan to do more activities, should I not fill all 10 slots in activities section?

Hi! This may be a dumb question, but do we have a matching form for the letters of rec? I am using my school's letter service and cannot find a matching for the letters of rec anywhere on the application. My letter service said to put their email in the application so the request gets sent to them, but I am not sure if I also have to send them a matching form. Thanks so much!

For secondaries, do we have to make an account for each school individually, and fill out secondaries on there?

There isn't a matching form, just put their email address into the application and the application system will send them a link with how to upload letters and any specifics of the letters.

Depends on the school. Some schools have added their secondaries to the application (like UCLA, Boston, and Tufts for example), while others have their own portals (like LLU, ASDOH, and Western), and still others don't have secondaries at all, just a fee to pay. Usually the school's website will tell you how to access their secondaries and pay their secondary fee.

IMPORTANT: REGARDING SECONDARIES AND THEIR FEES
I remembered using this last year, and here's the updated version for this year!
ADEA’s Quick Guide: Advising Predental Students
Tells you which schools have their secondaries on AADSAS, which have it separately like in a portal, and which ones only have a fee!

Enjoy all 🙂

For the relatives in dentistry section, it asks, "Do you have any relatives who are dentists/dental hygienist who are in dental/ dental hygiene school or who have studied dental assisting, dental laboratory technology or related dental field?" and asks about schools attended and degrees earned. My mom has been a dental assistant for over 20 years but did not go for school for it because at that time, Virginia did not require certification. Should I still put her down?

I'm confused about the application fees. Do we send them to each school right when we send the AADSAS application? Can we send them now? What about the schools that send secondaries only by invitation?

Should we enter all the DAT attempts in the Standardized Tests in our application or only the last one?

Would paid organic chemistry tutoring at my university be an academic enrichment experience?

Also, I private tutor a variety of subjects. Should I list this as well?

Are we supposed to fill out the Questions section for schools?? They have questions like “Why BU..” “ Have you confronted an ethical dilemma” this kind!

Is it good to take any pre-dental courses like waxing or x-ray certification?

Does anyone have discount promo code for interfolio 2018. I tried the last year one but doesn't work. thanks

For filling out prereq's on the application, when a course is listed such as "Principles of Biology I" or "Principles of Biology II," what all do we put for that? Do we put all of the bio courses that might count as those under each of the respective categories? Those are so general so its hard to tell. Thanks!

Is it worth creating a separate Employment entry under Experiences for a military deployment?

Is it worth creating a separate Employment entry under Experiences for a military deployment?
I'd say so, especially if you can put in words how the deployment was any different from your regular MOS/AFSC.

I am confused, why is there two application fees? Like I get it costs around $100 to send your application to each school using ADEA. But why do we have to pay another application fee directly to the school? I am confused, for example Rutgers says you need to pay $95 application fee even though it does not have any supplementary application. So why is there two different application fees I need to pay for each school?

Schools don't receive the fees from the primary application, that money goes to the ADEA. Secondary application fees go straight to the schools and are used to pay the people who process the applications. It sucks but its part of the process that's been going on since we were kids.

Oh God, now I am going to waste twice as much money as I previously thought.

Hi, I am entering my transcripts in and my University lists all the AP courses before the semesters. I realized that the credits in the earned credits column are weird decimals, for example, it lists "USGVPL AP AM GOV POL 2.7". There's no course number or description, so should I just put N/A for course number and USGVPL AP AM GOV POL for course description? Also there is no way to put in the correct number of units (all of mine are strange units like 2.7 or 5.3) and it doesn't work for the drop down menu. I will call on customer service Tuesday, but I was hoping to get an answer a little earlier. Thanks!

Under experiences, there’s both “Dental Experience” and “Volunteer”. If volunteering fell under dental related, would I place it under “Dental Experience” and indicate the type of recognition as “volunteer" as opposed to the “Volunteer” section?

Since shadowing would also fall under dental experience and by the volunteer type of recognition, I just want to make sure that dental schools don't miss out on dental-related volunteering

I would still because it shows exposure.

You can send it after you send in your aadsas app. I don't know about invitation only secondaries, but I assume you need to pay their application fee before you get it anyways.

Im pretty sure you have to put all of them.

Put the two courses that will fulfill those prereqs.

Anything dental-related is dental experience, I believe.

If I have partaken in an experience from highschool to current, should I note this in the description? Obviously I'd only count the hours/weeks that I have done in college. Also, would my hours begin after I graduate highschool (such as June 2015), or when I technically begin college classes (like august 2015)?

I had a question about the experiences tab? In the description, should you just be listing the duties/activities that you were doing in a sort of technical way? You don't talk about what you learned or gained from it in that box do you? For example, if I'm in Big Brothers Big Sisters I would just talk about me being a mentor and what that includes, right? It just seems like 600 characters is a lot to list a few sentences?

I have another question about the prerequisite portion for the individual dental schools. When selecting a course that fits their prereq, should I only select one? Because several of my classes fall under their prereq category. For example, one prereq has me assign a bio course but it says it can be microbio, molecular, or genetics and I've taken all of those? It lets me select more than one but I just wasn't sure.

Hmm if youve done it since high school I would actually put all culmulative hours since high school, because it shows long term commitment? If you are only going to list the hours/weeks done in college, i would also start the hours when you start college.

You can talk about all of it. You can talk about what you learnt, what you saw, and what you had to do. Try and convey everything you took from your experiences and what it has done to you as a person and skill wise; talking about these shows what you have and can use in dental school. Whenever you do something, you should be learning and taking skills from what it. I would say at least list the kind of special things that pop up that other candidates may not have and makes you stand out. Not sure if this makes sense; I'm pretty sure i did a mix of both talking about just what I did and/or adding what I gained/learnt from the experience as well. I added the skill gain on things that maybe what I gained may not have been entirely prevalent. i.e. I volunteered in a hospital and helped direct patients. This is kinda normal, they would assume I got patient exposure, and I probably put that on my description. But I also added that I learnt about issues such as accessibility, which is something different. Just be as clear and concise as possible, but sell yourself! 🙂

.
Just do the one course that fits it. Can be one of the 3. Doesn't matter as long as you fulfill the prereq.

Is our GPA verified for each individual school, or does ADEA verify it themselves? Also, when does this verification happen?

ADEA verifies it themselves, and the process starts as soon as you've paid 1 primary application fee ($249). They then start to match your inputted course history with that on your transcript, and verify that the subjects you selected are correct. They then will create a whole list of GPAs (like 40-50, or maybe more, it's just a bunch), which your schools will see.

Can you still submit your application on June 5th if the transcript has not been processed by then?

This has probably been asked before, but if I work in a university research lab as a paid job, should I list in under research or under employment? Or is either one acceptable?

If I attended pre-dental days at a dental school, would that fall under the dental experience or academic enrichment category?

Under "Program Materials" for each specific school we've listed and for the "Prerequisites" that we categorize ourselves, do we choose all the courses that can apply for that prerequisite? For example, let's say I've taken a lot of psychology courses, but school X only needs 3 credit hours of it. Do I only list one example to fulfill it or choose all that apply?

I would put it under research. Makes its stand out more imo.

Only do what is required. so if one course fills it you only need that one course.

Hi people, I think this question has been addressed before but I am still confused. So I just finished my Junior year of college, and I have registered my Fall 2018 senior classes, I entered those classes in the Transcript Entry as "In Progress". For Spring 2019, my school has not released the schedule yet, so I don't know what my actual schedule will look like. I have 1-2 classes in mind that I will take for sure, but I don't know the rest. What should I do? Thank you
Btw, one of those classes is Human Anatomy & Physiology II, so it is pre-required for some schools

You can submit your application and it just won't be reviewed until your DAT is received. I would submit earlier rather than later because transcript review does not start until you pay to submit.
I was wondering if there's any other advantage to applying early (before LORs are submitted) besides that Transcript review takes time?

Most schools work on a rolling admission basis. This means as time goes on they get more and more selective with their candidates. Applying early gives you the best shot at getting an interview.

So you are saying that the schools do look at the application even before all LORs are submitted?

I see I thought you meant applying in general.

Probably not much since I dont think schools look at your file until it says complete. The only benefit being your file is complete as soon as the letters get in rather than when you pay.
