I'm seriously considering not inviting my dad to my professional welcoming ceremony, when I told him I got into vet school he told me I should have become a pilot, along with a whole bunch of mean things to say. I mentioned the ceremony to him and he didn't even seem to care, I know he'll behave, but I only want to have people there who are genuinely happy for me (though I'm sure he is) and that can show it properly.... I also don't want to not invite him because he's my dad and he should be there.:bang:

Eh. You can't be responsible for his behavior, but you can be responsible for your behavior. The high road is to invite him. If he doesn't want to come or misbehaves, then it's 100% on him and you will have done your part and wouldn't have any responsibility for any friction in the relationship.

So... I'd suck it up and invite him.

Sucks that he's not more enthusiastic. 🙁

As a person who has a non-relationship with bio-dad due to creative differences, I say don't invite him. That is not the kind of negativity you need, especially in such a moral boosting event as a welcoming into a tough as nails program where it will take a positive attitude prevailing to get through to the end. Just my nickel thought.

Yeah, I guess more background is needed for the best answer. I am very jaded in my opinions thanks to my personal experiences.

Work is slowly cutting hours, because we're pretty much all caught up on data entry. Time to look for an additional job, as I can see this becoming an issue in the next couple of months.

Ultimately I suppose it depends on if the goal is a long term good relationship with dad or not.

Too true! Mine ended before it began, so I am not the best compass, as we all know. 😉

My dad is one of those people who take tough love to the extreme (not in an abusive way)... Its frustrating because I'm harder on my self then anyone could ever possibly be (I'm sure lots of you hear can relate) I really just wanted a "hey kiddo congrats on getting into the school of your dreams for the career of your dreams" or even a simple " congrats" at the very least no suggestion that I completely change my career path right after getting in...

I'll probably still invite him though.

Ma'am..... when you show up in my ER after your dog just got out of pyometra surgery after a week of inappetence and lethargy.... and try to give me an innocent look and tell me that you can't afford the overnight recovery care and you thought our cost was "covered" by the amount you paid the RDVM..... and I'm forced to use our good will fund to cover monitoring/treatment for your dog (which I'm happy to do)....

Do NOT give me sass when you come to get her in the morning about how we're not moving fast enough and you can't wait. Just don't. You got several hundred dollars worth of free care because I'm a nice guy who wanted your dog to have an appropriate post-op recovery period. This is when you just be quiet and say "thank you".

And next time - spay your dog.

One of my ex's didn't spay his dog because he "couldn't afford it'. Recently he found out it would have been much cheaper to spay her years ago instead of paying for a pyometra surgery for a 9yo mastiff.

To me, this mentality is like teenagers saying they don't wear a condom because it's uncomfortable. Hmm. Price for a pack of condoms or price for dealing with an unwanted pregnancy? Same here. Price for a spay or price for unwanted pregnancy/pyometra? For serious. Especially since there are a lot of low cost clinics nowadays.

Managed to lock myself out of my apartment for about 30 minutes tonight. Of course my boyfriend is currently in another state so there was no way he could let me in, the landlord wasn't in his office because it was 8 pm, and my phone was inside, so I couldn't call anyone for help. Luckily we live on the first floor, and I found a window unlocked that I was able to climb through. It could have been a lot worse, but I felt pretty dumb. :smack:

I used to have a self locking front door. Many times I had to break into a front window, sadly in various states of dress, or undress as it were. No one seemed to care in LA though. 🙂

Yeah, the door to my actual apartment doesn't lock itself, but the main door to the building does. I just moved in two weeks ago, so I'm still getting used to it. Luckily I was fully clothed when I wandered outside! 😉

I unfortunately find that at least 75% of the time when you stick your neck out for a client like that, they only want to jab a needle in it later. We all still do it though.

No good deed goes unpunished. Seriously. You do nice things. And most of the time, instead of being appreciative, people expect more. Ugh...

I feel like I've been in full on rant mode lately.

But if I come tell you that your 3 mo old unvaccinated puppy has parvo, and you opt to euthanize, you really, really shouldn't be informing me how sad you are because your last dog died of parvo too.

Time to quit getting dogs.

Oh yes, the multiple offender parvo people. I always tell them to consider their house contaminated for life. So no puppies under 18 weeks of age (properly vaccinated upto 16 weeks) or unvaccinated dogs should ever go there.

It's amazing how many people bring their new sick or healthy puppy to me, and THEN wonder at that time if their previous hx of parvo might be a problem. When I tell them yes, they get irate that their previous vet never told them (kinda doubtful... But even if so, how about some personal responsibility...?). Or if the puppy's sick, they always go, "but he's supposed to be up to date on vaccines!" And gets irate again. Sorry peeps, "up to date" does not mean fully protected. Having gotten a shot at 5 and 7 weeks at the puppy mill unfortunately doesn't mean that at 10-16 weeks we aren't going to get parvo... I feel bad for these people because clearly they were just ignorant. But if they have all of these questions for the vet, it means they weren't sure about the safety of their home. Why couldn't they have just called ahead of time prior to getting said puppy? Ugh...

My grandmother is really sick, like not sure how much longer she's going to make it sick. I don't know anything more specific because my mom is mad at my uncle and my grandmother over something that happened several months ago. My grandma wanted her adopted son put in charge and told my mom that what she thought didn't matter or something. Since then the only way I find out anything about my grandma is from vague attention seeking posts on Facebook from my uncle. It's so frustrating. I can't even call her because my uncle changed her phone number. My mom keeps saying she won't go to the funeral and my dad and I are trying to change her mind. I just wish I knew what was going on and that my family wouldn't be so ridiculously stubborn.

Our first piece of furniture (our bed) is supposed to be delivered today. I'm worried they won't be able to make it up our long, steep-sloped gravel driveway in a presumably large delivery truck and that they won't bring it up to the house. And I'm also annoyed because they gave the window as "9am-2pm". I can understand two or even three hour windows but five? What the heck.

The in-laws are visiting. It's been a few days, and I feel like it's time they go back home. Love them, but...I need my space. Four people in an 1100 sq foot apartment with two pets and one bathroom is killing me. And FIL, you're not right about everything. I appreciate that you have a loud opinion and feel the need to state it, but I've been able to cook, drive my stick-shift car, feed my pets plenty (mine aren't skinny, yours are obese!) and so many other things just fine for the past 20+ years all by myself. One more morning of opinionated comments before I even get halfway through my first cup of coffee and I may snap.

And stop feeding my pets people food! I said please don't feed the dog anything, she only gets dog food, and they still sneak her pizza crusts and chips. After asking again, now they "just let her lick the plate which doesn't count." Takes me months after they visit to get her to stop begging at the table and drooling on my foot when I eat, because they reinforce that behavior every time they're here.

It's Canada Day, but I'm on call so no celebrations, no beer, no nothing for me. And to start the day, I get a call that a dog I saw yesterday to aspirate a lump died overnight. Argh. Mama said there'd be days like this....

I hate it when rental companies half-ass repairs. Today my new lease started and as soon as I walk in I see that they didn't paint and whoever fixed a leak in the kitchen got plaster all over the laminate floors and counter tops. Thanks maintenance person. I'm glad that I'm not preparing to move in right away since I have to clean and probably paint to bring the place up to my standards (which really aren't that high).

Plus, there's a wasp nest off my patio that I didn't previously notice. It's actually a very lovely little nest and I feel bad about having to kill all the tiny bastards inhabiting it but they can't stay.

Well, clearly, if you read the article ... the officer couldn't get any tail and was pissed off. The human officer, I mean. Probably mad at his canine wingman for not doing a better job luring in the ladies.
Oh my. I didn't read the article, but made some very troubling assumptions about bolded before finishing the last sentence. Still not at all a good story, but I was honestly about to be sick for a moment.

Found our today a beloved professor committed suicide three days ago at the cross roads by my old house, he had been sick with many things and suffered depression his whole life.

Please remember to support your colleagues and friends. No one but us understands the battle every day can be.

Why is my bank closed today? Don't even understand, particularly since a ton of banks are. Apparently a lot of people who use my bank had today as a payday, including myself. I specifically remembered to grab my paycheck last night before I left the night shift so that I wouldn't have to wait till Monday to deposit my check. How ironic. I'm fortunate I don't live paycheck to paycheck.

So they're not wasps. They're actually a whole little nest of mean ass bald-faced hornets. Today I was stung twice so tomorrow morning they're all going to die.

Does your bank have an app? Mine does and allows me to take pictures of front and back of the check and electronically depositing it. I avoid going to branches like I avoid the DMV.

😕 Then I am so confused on how businesses use federal holidays. All the banks in the little "bank square" where my bank is at were open today. After working in retail for so long, I always forget that there are random federal holidays. The only holidays that used to exist for me were Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I would still work one of them too. I need to mark down all these random federal holidays.

My bank doesn't, but I still wouldn't use it if they did. I'm super paranoid about online banking. I've made it so that the only way my accounts can be changed in any way is with a copy of my ID and verbal communication with a teller or bank employee. It's excessive, but it doesn't inconvenience me so it works.

Direct deposit. Maybe your employer doesn't have it? Or are you not using it?

But seriously direct deposit is the best. No waiting of paycheck and once you do get paycheck and deposit it, that money still isn't "available" until the check has cleared. So yeah, if you can, I suggest direct deposit.

It isn't random...its the friday before a holiday that falls on the weekend. So it's a federal holiday. And most banks are closed on federal holidays (in this case, for July 4th, Independence day, a major national holiday). Businesses may be open on these days but many won't be.

I've used direct deposit before when I worked for my undergrad in Nebraska. My current job didn't have it until about a week ago, but I leave my job in less than two weeks to move back to Nebraska for a new job (with direct deposit as the only option). I loved it with my previous jobs for this very reason. I just didn't see the point of doing it for one paycheck this time around. Again ironic.

It's super random to me. I can totally understand businesses being closed on the actual holiday, particularly major national holidays like Independence Day. I don't understand businesses being closed the day before or the day after (granted, in this case, it would be Sunday in which banks would already be closed). I don't understand why today specifically is a federal holiday. It isn't the actual holiday.

As far as many being closed on these days, I seriously think that depends on the holiday. As far as I could tell, only banks were closed today. Tomorrow, it seems most businesses are open, with the exception of some smaller businesses like my aunt's vet. My mom on the other hand works for Payless and is scheduled until 7pm tomorrow.

to allow for a 3 day weekend. federal institutions don't usually work weekends. So to give them a day off (and for travel), the federal holiday is on the friday before. It's not that hard. Today is a holiday because tomorrow is the 4th of July which falls on a weekend.

My dad works for the federal government too. He had the day off. No one in the public would ever know because he doesn't really work with the public directly very much. The actual holiday, is on a day that most federal workers already have off. In order to give them the holiday off the holiday is observed on either the Friday before or the Monday after. The same thing happens if Christmas or Thanksgiving fall on a weekend day. It is actually quite simple and makes a lot of sense. But then again I grew up with it.

However you can easily google "federal holidays" and it lists them all.

Federal holidays in the US make much more sense than bank holidays in the UK. UK: "Let's have a bank holiday on this random Tuesday, because". Heck they have an "early May bank holiday" and a "spring break holiday" and a "summer bank holiday" and so on.

Depends on the business, they basically are free to do what they want in terms of observing the holiday or not (just like any other holiday). My mom works for a bank that was open today but the employees were given an extra floating day off to use whenever. All (or most) government institutions were closed today because, as mentioned, their employees don't typically work on weekends anyway. As were some school offices, which I found out when I tried to contact people at UTK haha.

Purdue's campus and the USDA offices were closed today too.

It just doesn't occur to me because I didn't grow up with anything like that. Our family has owned our own business for generations and we are open everyday the mall is open. And on the three days a year the mall isn't open, we still have to go in to care for everything. Three day weekends just have never been a thing in my life. For us to get a three day weekend, we had to plan a few months in advance and probably canceled one out of every six family weekends for business related issues. I've just never been able to count on a holiday like this. That's why it's completely random to me. Holidays landing on a weekend day were actually some of the worst days of the week for them to land business wise. The UK would probably drive me insane.

My next question would be why did the mailman come?! Why don't all businesses treat it consistently!!!???

Yeah, the only holidays that were considered holidays for the family business were Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving and only because the mall was closed. If the mall was open, we would be required to be open or face a $1,000 for every hour we aren't open. That was a pain to get around when black friday became a thing.

mine didn't

My parents would have preferred ours not have come. Bills for days.....

Because the USPS does operate on Saturdays usually, so they get tomorrow off.

I'm just going to nod my head and roll with it at this point. When I get moved to Nebraska, I'm going to follow DVMD's advice, google all the federal holidays, and write them down so my confusion doesn't repeat. I can't believe it's taken me 13 years of being in the work force to actually notice this pattern.
