So I’m allergic to cat saliva (only the wet saliva not the dander for some reason, or at least I don’t react as much to that...) and I was holding/restraining a cuddly ragdoll at work just a bit ago AND NOW I HAVE TWO HIVES ON MY LIP.
ON. MY. LIP.

WHY.
I had hives over a good portion of my face yesterday cause a boxer puppy decided I tasted DELICIOUS.

Okay, but Ragdolls are the best so it was a little worth it right 😉

My landlords are showing my apartment tomorrow so now I have to clean. On top of being anxious waiting for waitlist stuff to move along. Uuuuuggggh

Definitely was walking around yesterday with a 25# maine coon that I wanted to squeeze. And then I wore him like a scarf because he wanted snuggles. Totally worth the scratchy face and neck :-D

I have discovered since graduating that I am allergic to bunnies. And I'm the vet at my hospital that they send all the exotics to, so it's not like I can say I won't see rabbits. I've learned that I can stop the hives on my hands if I wash them really quickly after the appointments, but still don't know what to do about the sneezing....

I keep my place set at 80 in the summer.

Growing up in FL, if my sister or I complained that it was too hot we were told to go outside. That made 80 feel cool really quick, lol.
Oh the Floridian life...My mom usually keeps it at 78.

However, my own place stays between 72 and 75 year round.

My husband sets it to 57 at night in the winter and would leave it there all the time if I didn’t crank it “up” to 65 when i get home. House stays pretty cool in summer as we’re in the woods with lots of shade.

might lose my seat at my in-state due to failing a graduate-level neurochem class I didn't even have to take :smack: why am I so talented at getting in my own way

Juory sommons came in the mail today. 5 year I haven't been called...I only had 3 more months to go without being called before I moved 🙁
They must be calling all the SDNers! I just got mine as well but I served less than two years ago so I got excused. It was for the Monday after finals. Noooo thank you. Who knows, maybe you’ll have a good experience! Or they’ll send you home right away which apparently happens to my dad every time...

Wow! We only get 1 year in which we are "free" after serving. In my county we call in the night before and they tell you if you have to come or not-really hoping when I call in I don't have to go!

I thought my county was only one year also, but turns out it’s five! Fingers crossed you don’t have to go!

I was called in November 2016. I explained that I was a resident and got excused for 6 months, then exactly six months and one week later was called again. I tried to get out of it again and they wouldn't let me this time. My residency program was going to make me take my vacation every day of the trial if I was chosen! And if it took all my vacation days they didn't care, I wouldn't be getting any other time off. I was super bitter, having to take my vacation days for something I was legally required to go to but not wanting to do. I tried to appeal to HR to let me miss without taking vacation but they wouldn't budge and just kept repeating that residents don't get administrative leave for things like that. My faculty let me go to selection without taking a day off since I was already on a research week. I got there, they said they were selecting for three trials, two days at most. They asked if anyone with conflicts would form a line, but I decided I could handle two days. You could hear them assigning the people with conflicts to one of two groups and very rarely a third group. In the end, those of us who stayed sitting down and didn't claim a conflict got assigned to the third group, and they told us that we were excused without serving because the case we'd just been assigned to had been settled. I was so happy I didn't get up and claim an issue. We're only exempt for a year, so hopefully I'll get lucky those last ten months or so of residency.

Did your IS tell you you had to pass everything? If it’s not a prereq they generally don’t care much. Call and ask them about it.

this, and also, it’s probably not too late to drop. Sure you’ll get a W, but a W is better than a F.

They said I need to complete all coursework currently in progress with a C or better. Unfortunately the last day to drop was a few weeks ago unless for "urgent non-academic reasons". Hopefully I can pull off a C

Edit: apparently I don't know how to multiquote so @cdoconn and @SkiOtter lol

What's your IS? Like Ski said, as long as you're not bombing every course you take, schools don't usually have grade minimums for anything but pre-reqs. Are you using this class as a required elective/upper level science?

Auburn (technically contract; I'm in KY). It's just a "fun" class, doesn't meet any requirements for my major or for Auburn. I'll probably have good grades in the rest of my classes this semester, so if they only care about pre-reqs that would be great. That's what I had assumed they would do, but the phrasing of that one sentence in my acceptance email has me worried

Email them and ask?

Yeah I definitely would contact them and ask. There’s a chance they may have made a typo in their email and it was supposed to say “all required coursework”
Hoping that’s what happened!!!

I'm allergic to bunnies too! Where I used to work we saw rabbits, and if I saw that there was one on the schedule and took a Claritin beforehand I was usually okay. Also some rabbits seem to bother me more than others, not sure if it's a breed thing or the type of hay they get or what. One of the vets I worked for was allergic to basically everything with fur, but rats and other rodents were the worst, so she would ask the receptionists to not schedule her with multiple pocket pet appointments in a day if they could help it (although of course if she was the only vet available, she would see it).

Ugh. Moving sucks. I underestimated the amount of crap I had and got the wrong size truck (I knew I should have listened to my gut and the bigger one). I still have to grab a few things at my old place and now have to unpack all the things but work the next two days.

Also went and got coffee this morning and some guy barged through the door, bumped into my bf who then bumped into me. This resulted in coffee spillage on my chest and I now have a decent burn...

Currently wading in an inch or so of water in my apartment. Called emergency maintenance. "Yeah we'll send someone out tomorrow, please dry up the water." Dude, I don't own enough towels to even make a dent!

Also, walking on sopping wet/cold carpet is an extremely unpleasant feeling. At least it's clean water.

Update: They called back after deciding that they should come tonight. Won't be here for another hour, guess I don't sleep tonight.

Did they end up fixing the problem and getting some of those big blower fans to help dry the carpets?

So the person who came that night didn't want to unclog my main line that late at night. He vacuumed up the water, but since I was still actively flooding, everything was further soaked by the next morning. The next afternoon they managed to clear the line, but didn't vacuum up the new water. They left the fans, but I mean the carpet was sopping wet (when I stepped on it, water covered my feet). So I called again, and they sent someone out to vacuum up the water at like 10pm. So the carpet was sopping for 48 hours and now smells moldy. They were supposed to send someone today to rip out the padding underneath +/- determine if they should just redo all my carpet but no one came. This would probably be happening on a faster timeline if I was around for the people who are coming in so I could make sure things got done, but clinics.

Everything is finally dry now, it just smells pretty bad.

Noooooooo that’s so annoying 🙁

Yeah super typical apartment maintenance 🙄

Also still waiting for them to fix my sliding door lock, since the only thing keeping someone from opening it from the outside is a stick I found that I put in the track of the door lolol.

This time last year my apartment flooded while I was gone for two weeks. The leak was noted when water was dripping into my downstairs neighbor's apartment. Apartment management did a fairly decent job at cleaning it up, but there was no way to know how long the carpet had been wet. We ran special carpet drying fans that blew air under the carpet for 48 hours then I kept the apartment windows/balcony door open + ceiling fans + a box fan for another 48ish. It took probably 5 or 6 days for the smell of wet carpet to really go away.

It's quite a surprise to walk in from vacation when you've turned the AC off during summer in the south, smell moldy carpet, water, hear fans going, and see all your stuff has been moved. IDK why they didn't even try to contact me until 10 pm when I got home when it was obvious they'd spent several hours there cleaning it up, moving things, and all that...

Today I managed to drive all the way to school (1.5 hours) before realizing I didn't have my backpack. Wouldn't be such a horrible thing except today I have my final in my Microbiology Lab and we are allowed to use notes....
Like, how does that even happen?!? *facepalm*

Normally I love SDN, but I'm getting annoyed by all the negativity in regards to vet school, being a practicing veterinarian, etc etc. Not exactly a rant...and maybe I just read the worst threads...but I guess it means I need to take a step back 🤔

I mean, vet school is ridiculously hard at times. Sometimes you’re going to hate it, but that’s okay. Sometimes people just need to vent 🙂

Reality isn't negativity.

You know, I used to think this too. I just didn't understand why everyone had to be negative all the time, especially in a career that should be amazing, at least in my mind. If the career is amazing, then vet school should be amazing too, right?

The thing is, it is really, really common to have a slightly unrealistic view of veterinary medicine or vet school even if you have 10,000+ shadowing or working hours under your belt (though certainly more hours do help). We have this perception of what vet med is going to be, and unfortunately, this is frequently a little starry eyed, at least it was for me (YMMV).

Vet school itself is hard. In fact, it can be down right awful. Why? Because the constant exams, social pressure cooker, and juggling act can be exhausting and sometimes seemingly impossible. And you know what? It is more than okay to hate vet school. Vet school is not being a veterinarian. I did hate it, and I at first felt guilty for it, until I realized it was okay to hate the crappy transportation on the way to destination veterinarian.

As far as being a vet goes, it does not come without its disadvantages. Depression, compassion fatigue, bad clients, being overworked and underpaid, all come together to make quite a few vets unhappy at times. And that's okay. It's okay to want positive change, and to be frustrated with your situation.

I personally think that it's important to understand the downsides of vet school and being a veterinarian and to be ready to combat the negativity. People generally don't tell you all these negative things to over exaggerate or scare you off, but to allow those entering the profession a chance to see the reality of the situation and prepare themselves that vet med may not all be filled with happiness all the time- and that that is okay. 🙂

FWIW, I would now say that I’m happy and enjoy what I do very much. But there are long hours, emotional cases, tough clients, scary situations, etc. I have a rare day where I literally just come home and cry. But by and large, I come home feeling good, even with the occasional tough spot mixed in. We don’t lament the negatives to scare people away, but to shed some truth on a highly romanticized profession so that others coming along behind us are prepared and have time to consider their career choices.

I agree to an extent. I'm still in school, and it really can suck at times. Your life hits stop while everyone else outside of school keeps going. Honestly, the social vacuum of vet school is the hardest part for me. However, I can't 100% relate to the some posts I've seen that make vet school sound like you'll be dying 24/7. I'm certainly not. There are ups and downs, for sure, and it's incredibly demanding, but I never approached vet school thinking it would be a good time either. You can throw any 'I'll love my vet school classes because it's material I actually care about!' out the window.

Rarely do I see anyone posting about the good parts about vet school that don't have something to do with getting a good grade/passing a tough exam (I'm guilty too). It is what you make of it, just like anything. If you approach it with a sense of reality and aren't thinking it will be the best 4 years of your life and that you will enjoy every moment, you won't get totally smacked in the face by first year. Keep in touch with your emotions too, and if you are truly that miserable you should talk to a professional or the school and see if anything can be done. Personally, while I feel it's great to vent, centering on how much you hate everything really will change your experience (and it will change who wants to be around you for the next 4 years).

Practice is different imo, as the demands of you are different.

It's also okay to be annoyed by it, btw. Just like it's okay to be negative.

If you really think 4 years in any school, whether it’s high school, undergrad, or vet school, are going to be the best 4 years of your life, you just are setting yourself up for a bad time. I hated high school and didn’t love all of undergrad, yet I was told it was supposed to be the best 4 years of my life. So then what’s the rest of my life supposed to be like? A massive ****pile? If the supposed best four years are towards the beginning of your life, that’s basically just saying “well the rest of your life is going to suck donkey balls so enjoy this terrible four years while you’re in school.”
I personally am not expecting vet school to be the best four years of my life because if it is, the rest of my life is apparently going to just be downhill from here. :bag:

Belive me, I know! And I appreciate people being up-front and honest about their experiences and what to expect. Just think I’ve been reading these forums way too much lately and it’s all compiling in my mind while staring down the stress of an international move

Yeah I just feel that's one of the most frequent things I see. 'I can't wait for vet school because it's what I finally want to learn! It will be enjoyable and fun and I will get better grades because I like the material finally.' I mean yeah, but it's not like it's not like the heavens open up once you start classes first year. It still sucks, lol.

I take it you're a class of 2022 member then. Come join the class thread! Moving is always stressful on top of the stress to come but people have been incredibly helpful imo. Like I was stressing about housing and such and everyone was great to give feedback and encouragement. Tell us your stress-we are still happy prevets with summer ahead of us 🙂

Wanted to thank you all for taking the time to respond to my non-rant. Very thankful I found SDN and everything that comes with it! Just got bogged down late at night reading things (should probably avoid that lol)

God I hated those people who were all “high school is the best time of your life.” High school was the worst and you couldn’t pay me enough to repeat it
