Provided the plant isn't dead, we've had a number of those.
Also something I learned at some point - boat antifreeze isn’t bad like car antifreeze. Still not like, good to drink, but not super toxic.
Hmm...That's interesting. I wonder why that is.
Why don’t we use proplyene glycol in cars then?! Not as good at low temps?Boat antifreeze is typically propylene glycol. Car antifreeze is ethylene glycol. The reason being, you don't want the boat leaking ethylene glycol into the waters as it is highly toxic and can kill the wildlife where you are boating at. Propylene glycol is less toxic, much less toxic, while, yes, a large amount could kill something, it is less likely to do so.

I love all the learning we are doing here about antifreeze
Where are these dogs finding antifreeze at this time of year? Just randomly in the garage type of thing?
We've had a lot of antifreeze calls in the last couple months. No idea why.
Have a feeling it's because people are getting out more now that quarantines are being lifted

We had a weird toxicity case come in a few days ago to my in externship location. Collapsed while out camping at a local reservoir. Vomited and collapsed and owners suspected heat stroke. Held dog in the lake while prepping to bring her in. Brought in less than 1 hour after first clinical sign extremely tense across all limbs, missing all reflexes and seemingly deep pain, essentially comatose but with eyes open and tracking, temp 94*. Bolused fluids, hospitalized, and started tests. Electrolytes effes. EG positive on serum. Started treatment. Came in the next morning ~14 hours later, completely different dog. All reflexes back, blood work great, responsive in every way, walking. Even better when I left 12 hours later.
I was thinking it was people dewinterizing their boats and ski-dos, and that anti freeze contaminating areas cause people dont GAF any more. We're opening up enough/people dont care enough any more that they're starting to go out in droves.
what a weird EG presentation...my mind would have gone to something more like tick paralysis or even
botulism, other than the whole dog still being alive thing lol
Every clinician was saying the same thing.
I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but did you know antifreeze has a sweet taste? Many places are required by law to add bittering agents to their antifreeze products for safety reasons.
In 2008, there was even a man convicted of murder for spiking his wife's gatorade with antifreeze.
Heart eyes for dog being great the next morning/evening, obviouslyCame in the next morning ~14 hours later, completely different dog. All reflexes back, blood work great, responsive in every way, walking. Even better when I left 12 hours later.
Also, a lot of people are draining/replacing their anti-freeze as warmer weather arrives, as it also protects during hot weather. Maybe not newer cars, but older ones get it changed twice a year.
Is that what happens when the car service people “top up fluids” or is that just windshield wiper fluids and stuff?
Sigh. This is what happens when schools do away with shop class and home ec and stuff... Though wait, I actually did have home ec. We did learn how to bake monkey bread.
I’m so intrigued by this mythical creature that is ethylene glycol. I’m ever terrified of it, have seen the aftermath of it, but have yet to actually encounter the actual substance myself.
Delicious thoughThough wait, I actually did have home ec. We did learn how to bake monkey bread.
Valuable life skill.Delicious though
I feel like everyone is getting shat upon right now. I'm not trying to minimize what you're going through, just empathizing and adding a comment that people on the whole seem to be less tolerant lately. And I feel like it's an across-the-board thing. I've never had so many rude clients asking for unreasonable things. I've seen so many more (more than usual) retail people get yelled at for stupid things that they can't control. It's like a Karen explosion. I wish I knew how to fix it. I can't even hand out free hugs because of COVID.I am quickly growing weary of us working our asses off with what little we have to try to help people only to receive death threats and get generally shat upon.
I am tired. I don't know if I have what it takes to work in public health right now. Ugh.
Haha that sounds like the type of trashy show I don’t like to watch. My type of trashy show is more along the lines of honey boo boo@Minnerbelle needs to watch some Roadkill (car show) in order to learn how antifreeze ends up on the ground. Maybe an extreme example in some cases... haha.
Oh hey sameMy type of trashy show is more along the lines of honey boo boo
yaaaaaasssssss
like, dance mom FTW
(Toddlers and tiaras)I’m so glad I’m not the only one who likes Honey Boo Boo. I also enjoy the beauty pageant kids one (while still acknowledging just how sad it is that there are people in this world who spray tan their three year olds and dress them in bikinis to parade around a room full off people).

People have been setting off fireworks in my neighborhood for the last month.
Yes this my poor dog has been on Trazodone since May... still is hiding in the basement currently because that's the most soundproofed area we could make for him. So over fireworks.People have been setting off fireworks in my neighborhood for the last month. There's a brief lull usually from 4am-9/10am and then it starts up again.
I'm really, really, really over it. Most fireworks aren't legal in Minnesota anyway. Is it really that big of an ask to expect people not to set them off after midnight? If it were just on the 4th/weekend of the 4th, whatever, it wouldn't be a big deal. But this has been going on since MAY.
I hate fireworks almost as much as I hate chronic sleep deprivation. I'm willing to acknowledge that I'm grumpier about them because I'm 13 days away from my oral prelim so my stress level is already through the roof. But good god.

Same thing is happening here. I was sick of it on the first day. When it started I was googling, trying to figure out if there was some holiday I forgot about because why people were setting off fireworks on a random Wednesday was beyond me.
Michigan is like...firework capital of America, I think.
I live in the sticks but high up in elevation so I can see a lot of the towns/cities far away. I couldn’t hear anything with the door closed because we’re so far away. Usually we can see isolated big firework shows in all of the towns/cities on the 4th. Like 20-30 min of sparkles in the same spot, with patches of them spaced apart. But this year I just saw small amounts of fireworks shooting up everywhere. My stupid cats came running to look all excited when I opened the sliding door and we could hear them.I actually felt like the amount of fireworks was way decreased this year. I’m in a slightly more rural area (low density or whatever the zone code is) and I just heard some brief ones around like 8pm then nothing else. I assumed it was because fewer people were having parties due to covid.
That's messed up, I'm sorry that happened.I hope you all don't mind if I add a rant here.
I work full time as a non-certified vet tech and I'm applying to vet schools currently. I love my job - my vets, my coworkers, the animals, what I get to do - but we have been absolutely slammed since Covid began.
My regular shift is 10 or 12 hours + cleaning/emergencies after we close. We have 2.5 vets, usually just one on hand at a time. No way around it - we are understaffed. We have hired two new techs/receptionists and taken back three of our techs/receptionists off of furlough since Covid started. It's still not enough.
I am fine with all of the above - I thrive in stress and I leave my shift feeling proud of myself for sticking with it all day. What gets me is my boss/head vet has started cracking down on us techs "slacking." For example, we are supposed to start the SOAPs in the computer for our vets before they type up the rest, and we haven't been doing that. Why? Because when we're two hours behind and I'm the only tech doing all appointments (scheduled and emergency and tech), it is more important to get the next patient than it is to stop everything to type notes that can be done later. Doing everything curbside makes everything harder too. I always write my notes on the patient's intake paper so it's not like the information disappears. The vets just don't want to start SOAPs (which is understandable, they're stressed too). I would type them all at the end of the day if the vets didn't scoop up the papers and bring them home. I tried explaining this all to my boss and she said "Well this wasn't a one-time occurrence, this has been going on for weeks, and it needs to stop." Yeah, because it's been hell since March! I'm lucky if I get five minutes of a lunch break in a 12+ hour shift! I've also been making overtime (called in on "bad days," and they're all bad days) almost every payment cycle, which is fine by me and my wallet, but goes to show I'm dropping everything for this job. Being the middle-man that gets perpetually yelled at by clients for the vets running late is not a walk in the park either.
I have tried suggesting to my boss multiple times that our techs and receptionists are getting burnt out and we really need more people (and probably another vet). She always scoffs and says "This is a temporary flux, it'll go back to normal soon and then I'd have to fire people if I hired more now." This has been getting progressively worse since March. All of these people are new, permanent clients being added to our system. This isn't just going to go away, especially when she does not turn away or refer any patient.
Again, I love everything else, but wow, getting repeatedly yelled at for "not doing enough" over something so trivial while working my butt off for 12+ hours at a time does not feel good.
