RANT HERE thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Minor rant: I don't like when food places that are supposed to be open late don't seem to be open (or don't have anyone manning the drive-thru). 🙁

I should probably just go grocery shopping so that I have some water, juice, pop, etc. on hand when I get thirsty at night but that takes, like, planning and stuff.

I'm not gonna detail the entire case, but I'm just gonna throw this out there:

Don't get lazy about not tracing your uterine horn back to the bifurcation doing your spays. Just don't. Take the 10 seconds to trace it back and make sure you have uterus and not some other organ or tissue. I had an incredibly sad case in my ER this weekend that could totally have been prevented by tracing to the bifurcation.

Just do it. Even though you're positive you're holding an ovary or you're positive this is uterine horn and not something else.

Public Service Announcement. 🙂

ureters?

Welp, we just lost another clinician/section head to the craptastic state budget situation. That makes 2 section heads and one's wife who runs our clinical skills lab. Apparently the school can't get anyone to fill the spots, either, because everyone who is already here is understandably worried about their paychecks. 🙁

And if you have a cryptorchid, trace the vas to the testicle and not to the prostate...

It is below standard of care to cut out the prostate.

Is one section head derm? (Sort of retiring, but going to another school too. It's okay, a lot of problems with curriculum in 3rd are because of the power she had.) The other 2 were kind of expected, there were rumors about them possibly leaving last year. Really sucks because those are 2 people who actually have realistic opinions about how to change things around here. I can't imagine being a 1st year dealing with this though.

Optho!

Well, that is new information. Not going to be a lot left at this rate.
Yeah it's pretty discouraging. We don't even have rooms for the electives next semester and people are jumping ship. I wonder what the plan is....even just for the electives that are scheduled for nonexistent lecture halls...

You know, we weren't actually taught to do this in my surgery class - only started doing it myself after reading a horror story thread on VIN sometime last year.

I love my grandparents, but I just need to rant..
They don't listen to anything I say in regards to animal health. Their first dog was a lab, and ended up dying of congestive heart failure. She was obese and they fed her mounds and mounds of people food, but still claim that she wasn't fat and that she lived a good life. The last 2 years she was alive, she was on multiple medications and couldn't exercise because of knee issues and breathing problems. But she was "perfectly healthy".

They were devastated after her death, and I helped them pick out and adopt an adorable minpin mix. Well, he recently died because they didn't listen to me when I told them the dangers of letting your dog roam.. "But he won't be happy if he can't roam!!". Ended up getting into antifreeze in someone's garage and died a very painful death. So sad. My grandma was devastated, yet again...

Now they have a cockapoo. Got her from a shelter, and she was morbidly obese. I told them my food recommendations, feeding instructions, exercise regimen, etc. to help her lose weight. She lost 1.5 pounds, and they just told me today they were going to start free feeding after the holidays. They recently had a pancreatitis scare with her because they fed her sausage and cheese and she got pretty sick. I was hoping it scared them enough to stop feeding fatty foods, but nope.

I've decided to stop giving advice and getting upset about it. I love them and I hate seeing them sad when their dogs are sick/die, and I care about their dog's health... but they literally won't listen to anything. Sigh. Can't wait to be a vet and have to deal with noncompliant clients 😛

So, I follow the Doggies for Anthony page on Facebook, probably because I posted on it like last year. Now, I'm all for the pictures of dogs and think it's a great idea. However, I've been noticing more and more people posting pictures of their dogs, mentioning medical conditions and often listing a GoFundMe page or whatever in their post. It just rubs me the wrong way. I've also kind of been getting annoyed with all the people in general on Facebook/Instagram whatever, creating accounts to help fund their pets medical needs. I totally get the expense side of it and I'd probably be in a bind with my guy even though I get x % back because of insurance. However, I feel like more and more people are now just sort of expecting others to cover their pets' medical bills.

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive because I hate asking people for money...

I hate it too.
Especially when people tell me "go ahead with the surgery. I'm sure I can get the money online before you are done"

Huh, I haven't run into those yet. I've had like college kids tell me they were planning on starting a page, but none that counted on it happening. As in, i never heard from them again.

A coworker of mine started a serious page so she could raise money for music festival tickets. Medical needs, eh, maybe. Tickets? Yeah, no.

I've had three. So not a huge number but it irks me. All were >40 which I thought was a bit odd. Expect it more from the younguns.

None of them could even make a deposit up front. All of them assured me they would pay as soon as the online world came to the rescue. Didn't understand why I was hesitant to start high dollar surgeries on an IOU.

I had an ex-coworker's deadbeat criminal bf post a go fund me to give her the "wedding of her dreams"... Yet he had no job. He had raised $0 in 3 weeks. I felt kinda bad. Lol

I once had someone I knew through undergrad share a post for a cousin who made a page to help pay off her student loans so she could go into the Monastery...

I just saw today that someone from my HS wants to get their teeth fixed because they are so bad they don't want to smile. Fair enough, unsure what percentage of the damage is due to cigarettes, lack of care, whatever and what percentage is due to genetics, but hey. However, it will cost a total of $14,000+ and they have a Kickstarter for the first $3500 down payment. And it's mostly paid. I mean... that's a lot of money.

I'd probably consider giving $5 to that (broke girl here). I'm very fortunate that I was able to have braces and whatever orthodontic work I needed and I'm very hung up on keeping my teeth nice...I can't imagine being so self conscious that you're afraid to smile (although I do have a few friends who feel this way).

Ya, philanthropy is great, especially when it comes to issues you care about or feel connected to. Money for a wedding? Ya, I'll probably pass. Money for someone using a POS clunky hospital chair because they can't afford an ultralight wheelchair or their insurance refuses to pay for it? Count me in.

I just set up a non-profit with my Aunt and Uncle called Iconoclast Sport. Going to start designing the site and raising money soon. My goal is to provide complete parachute systems, monoskis, and other more "extreme" sports gear for wounded warriors and athletes with disabilities.

There's an organization called Operation Enduring Warrior that pays for skydiving licensing and all the training, but after that the guys/gals still have to buy their own custom gear that can reach ~$8,000. That's where I want to step in.

Yeah, it all depends on the cause. My brother starts go fund me type things for a variety of reasons. He also does charity amateur comedy shows for a cause in NC. He basically starts funds for kids with diseases where insurance won't allow for certain treatment or equipment or their parents can't afford to buy them christmas toys because they've spent all their money on medical care. Occasionally it will be for an adult's medical treatment. I always give to those, even if it's just $5.

There was one with a recently disabled child that wanted to ride bikes like he used to but needed a special bike to do so. They managed to raise the funds for it (and later posted the pictures of the kid).

Ya, it doesn't help that pretty much all equipment related to disability is so unbelievably expensive. I guess it happens in lots of specialized markets, but I just obviously see it everyday. Need a new upholstery back for your chair? That'll be $5,000. But I can buy the fabric for $20. Ok, fine. $4,000.

Yeah, even for things like fracture boots/braces, the price can be exorbitant. Luckily those things are available online for cheaper if your insurance doesn't approve them. But if the doctor's office tries to send me home with certain things...it can quickly be hundreds of dollars for things I can get online for under $50

I've definitely contributed to a similar organization started by one of my coaches at a gym at home. He's a former Marine and is wheel chair bound (genetic vs trauma) but started this foundation to help make people aware of all the activities available for those various types of disabilities. He's helped build some playgrounds for kids and donated various hand cycles and such.

Public schools in my area are closed due to a bomb threat 🙁 We just had a shooting here a few weeks ago so everyone is kind of flighty. Why can't we go a week without hearing about this kind of stuff?

I just saw this on Facebook. 640,000 kids sent home. The logistics of that astounds me.

Came downstairs after my shower, heard a odd thump thump thump noise. Go to the kitchen and the ceiling is dripping water - right under where the bathtub is upstairs. Lovely.

This makes the second leak in the kitchen ceiling since I've lived there. The first was supposedly fixed before I moved in and whoever did it left a huge ****ing mess (plaster everywhere). I better not come back to that this time or I will be livid.

I like the place I'm renting but the plumbing is off. Like, the half bath and upstairs bath sinks back up with water (gray water too, like from the washing machine - but not necessarily MY washing machine.... which is ewww). That's weird because the toilets work fine and the shower works as well. I imagine that the sinks are maybe DIY gone wrong and whoever DIY'ed that **** didn't properly vent them. That would be my guess.

The leaking though. That's a new problem and I'm not particularly happy about it.

My roomie won't let me name her foster dog "Potato." 😛

Facebook creeping is a sure way to find absolutely cringe worthy "inspirational" quotes from former high school classmates. Like this girl who is literally quoting herself on FB.

Example:
Em

"Trust your intuition in ALL moments. Instinct isn't just for animals/dogs. We all have it. Trust what you know. Fear Is not present in love."

-Em

Em was heavily into the local drug and party scene in high school. Some of her ramblings make me wonder if she ever left that scene. She's trying to re-brand herself into some hippie/spiritualist/soap-maker/life-coach but to me this inspirational babble just makes her sound mentally unhinged. Her nutrition advice is equally disturbing.

Most of my HS classmates regularly repost those stupid pictures with something along the lines of "Waiting for Prince Charming" or "I'm strong because I cry."

At least it makes it easier to figure out to to hide or unfriend.

My problem RA is still a problem. Hopefully next semester she and I can still be congenial with one another. I do not want a repeat of the fiasco that was the week before Thanksgiving.

That feeling when you get home and you know someone (maintenance guy) has been in your place.:nailbiting:

Honestly, I hate when the maintenance people stop by when I'm not home. First, the guy called me at work and left a message about my "electrical problem." Um, my problem is with leaking water and poorly draining sinks. He wanted me to call him back.

I get home and I start noticing little things - a small bit of dirt on the kitchen floor, a piece of leaf on the stairs, a door slightly opened. I go upstairs (where I forgot to pick up my dirty clothes last night/this morning so a blue bra is like right in the middle of the floor) and the cabinets under the sink are wide open. I look around and my towels are gone. The sink is still filled with water. The drain grate is back in the tub (it only takes a couple pieces of my long hair to block the tiny holes in the grate so I take it out). All my cleaning supplies from under the sink are on the floor.

Get back downstairs, find my towels in the utility room sitting on my recycling bin - soaking wet. :grumpy:

I'm looking around wondering, "What the hell did this guy actually do?"

Now I have to call tomorrow because I'd like to know if he put chemicals down the drains. What the plan is, like, did he even look at the kitchen ceiling to see the water stain there?

That is ridiculous! Sorry they were so frustrating - I would be livid if I came home to find that.

That is awful.. I'm so sorry you have to deal with that! I would be SO mad. I put the dog's crate right by the door so if anyone tries to come in when I'm not home, the barking will make them think otherwise. It seems to work, because I always get notes on my door to say that they stopped by but left because I wasn't home!

The worst! What could he have possibly been thinking using your towels to clean up gross water/possibly chemicals?!

The worst! What could he have possibly been thinking using your towels to clean up gross water/possibly chemicals?!

My dad thought that maybe he emptied the trap below the sink and used the towels to clean up the water. I hope that's it.

Regardless of what was done today, I'm going mention something tomorrow to my property company. This guy has failed to show in the past for different things and if he's the guy that fixed the small ceiling leak I noticed before moving in, he left a huge mess of plaster dust and dribbles all over the counter tops and the faux hardwoods downstairs. I really don't want to repeat that.

A former coworker of mine is currently in the hospital and may have to undergo brain surgery. 🙁 I don't know very many details and I think the doctors are still figuring things out at this point. She's only 23 and super sweet, and currently a 4th grade teacher. Prayers/good thoughts would be appreciated. It's all so scary and unexpected. :/
