How many vets out there also hunt? Those hunters who make use of the majority of the animal they kill for food/other sit much higher on my list than those who kill for sport. I have never hunted and honestly have no desire to, but I'm also not a vegetarian...
depends on the area you are in. I know several veterinarian hunters. Including one that is vegetarian except for what they hunt. And they use the entire animal.

I know a couple vets that hunt here in Ohio (food, not sport) and I do as well to stock up the freezer for the winter.

Most hunters I know do it for the sport of it, but use the animal afterwards in its entirety. No one I know actually needs to hunt, but they do because they like to hunt. Afterwards, they take the animal to be slaughtered, mounted, or both to some extent. For those I know that don't want or need the meat, they donate it to the local food pantry.

This is true for a lot of people. Growing up, we always used it for the products and never mounted. We processed it ourselves. It seriously was a way to cut down our grocery bills and keep the freezer full. However, most people do not do it for this reason and it is about who can claim the deer with the most points.

I honestly don't have a problem with this. As long as the hunter uses the entire animal, I feel they can go for the biggest, baddest buck out there.

I was being sarcastic. It's just why it has such fervent believers.

Sarcasm or not, I don't think your statement was necessarily wrong if you use the term "homeopathy" not as the usual established definition (dilution, dilution, dilution) but as the mistaken definition that most people use to include just about anything. I've had a few clinicians tell me stuff like epsom salts, liniments, sweating legs, etc, don't really work all that well. What works is time, but owners want to feel like they, or the vet, is doing something to help. That being said, the true definition of homeopathy where you dilute something 1:1000 or something like that -- no dice.

Haha yeah that is true. Getting a big buck is definitely a bonus. Additionally, the deer population in Ohio is ridiculous even with the amount harvested every year. I cannot count how many have almost jumped in front on my truck last year :nailbiting:.

To my various friends and family: WHY ARE YOU ALL GETTING MARRIED IN SEPTEMBER?! Seriously, I would have liked to spread out my vacation time a little, not take it all in one month to accommodate you and your four weddings. How about next year I throw a big party to celebrate being single and you can all use up your vacation time?

Overheard a physical therapist talking about how insane it was that the vet wanted her mom to give the cat insulin shots...so instead they are just going to put the cat down. I was like good thing you don't need insulin.... 🙁

At least where I'm from, hunting is non-existent. However, most, if not all, of the vets I've worked with are avid fishermen. They do harvest what they've caught afterwards, though.

A girl I went to high school with posted on FB the other day about how she found a dog on the side of the highway, called the number on the tag, and the owner told her to just let the dog out of her car so she could find her way back home. She did, but the dog kept running in and out of traffic on the highway, so she got the dog back in her car and tried calling the owner again, but it went straight to voicemail. So she decided to take her to the nearest vet clinic, which was less than 10 minutes away, and they agreed to watch her for free. Then later she got a nasty text from the owner saying "I told you to leave my f***ing dog alone to let her out stupid f***ing nosy ass people. She does this s*** all the time next time mind your own f***ing business." :wtf: Some people are so ungrateful.

Just remember that some people are good people, too. Like we had a lady lose her dog and she came in upset and crying looking for her dog. Another lady found it and left her name and number just in case. The person who lost the dog put a credit on her vet account because she was so grateful.

Or how this guy (without a job and income) found a cat and it had a microchip and we were able to get back in touch with the original owner. But since he had already gotten attached to the cat, and the cat was very happy, the owner let him keep her and offered to help pay the vet bill.

Oh definitely, I love seeing the happy reunions and I know stories like what happened to this girl are rare. I just thought it was ridiculous.

My dear friend got rejected from a school I was accepted at. She has a better GPA than me and worked really hard. I feel terrible.

It's not all about grades and you shouldn't feel bad that you were accepted. Monkeys and dartboards 😉

I'm sure that you worked just as hard as your friend did. Sometimes schools are looking for different things in their potential students, and you shouldn't feel bad that they wanted you! GPA isn't everything, either. 🙂

I hate when I see a FB message pop up from someone I am not even friends with or never really talk to, because I know it's going to be asking for medical advice. Although I do feel bad for the guy....his older pup just tested positive for heartworm (and he lives down the street from my dog, a little jarring!) and he is worried about putting him through the treatment.

This also prompted me to verify with my mom that she is giving my pup her Heartgard every 30 days. I'm lucky though, my mom is very good about giving preventatives on time and correctly.

Dude didn't pick up his sick pup today after he was with us all day for IV fluids. Waited an extra hour for him to show up. We don't typically do overnight hospitalization, and ideally this dog would be monitored by someone during the night, so I feel really bad that he's there all alone.

My boyfriend loves hunting. He got a good buck last season and he stocked me up with a good amount of meat to help me out with groceries. I personally don't have any desire to hunt, but I'm not against it (as long as you don't take crap shots just to knock the animal down so you can get close and get a better shot). I prefer fishing, but haven't eaten my own catch yet.

I will say that I am against hunting certain animals other than deer, but it's not necessarily for welfare related reasons. Where I'm from, people want coyotes, wolves, and even bears eradicated to protect their toy/hunting dogs and livestock. That is where I'll draw the line.

Owner says to son, "Why didn't he attack her?" AFTER I was all up in the dog's face, taking his temp. Thanks for the warning, guys.

Today, we had 3 70-100 lb. dogs come in at the same time because one of them may have eaten the owner's insulin syringe. I was one of 2 people taking the X-rays but I was also the one running back and forth with all 3 dogs from the room to the scale to radiology and back while wearing my lead apron. While we were struggling with the feistiest one on top of the X-ray table, with him kicking the crap out of me, another assistant sprayed down one of the cages next to the X-ray machine with disinfectant, said something, and walked away. I had no idea what she said because I was concentrating on the flailing dog that was kicking me and scratching the hell out of my arm. 15 minutes later I was cleaning up radiology, and someone else asked that assistant about the cage and whether it needed to be cleaned. She says, "I sprayed it down and told everyone that it needed to be cleaned but no one listened to me." Yeah, I was just standing there filing my nails, whistling a happy tune, and daydreaming about French fries and an ice cream sundae. That's why I didn't freaking listen to you, lady. It's not like I was busy or anything. Man, I just love working on Sundays.

It must've been that kind of weekend. I was in an exam room while doc was examining a seemingly nice cat. He started to growl a little so I lightly scruffed him. He went completely mad and missed my finger by a hair. The owners were like "wow, we're surprised he made it that long!" Umm, thanks for not mentioning your cat is a jerk.

Over the summer one of the world's nicest clients (who has the world's nicest Boston Terrier herself ) brought in an elderly family friend with her dog for a second opinion. The friend's dog ended up needing surgery and the world's nicest client paid for it. We all felt so good after that case.

Last month we discovered this client's personal dog had a malignant tumor and it had already metastasized . We were all crushed.

Now we just find out that SHE has cancer.

Life is just unfair🙁

That anatomy practical. Was very worried when we were presented with an easy written, and it was well justified. That one was simply miserable.

Sorry it went so poorly, that one just has a really bad reputation every single year I feel like 🙁

On the bright side, you are now 75% done with anatomy!!!!

Bummed that I have to give up planks, push ups, pull ups and anything overhead due to PT because I was finally feeling string again. But in the end it will be worth it to hopefully avoid injections/surgery down the road

I'm actually fairly sore now after my first session.

What a ****ty day.
Went in to work two hours early, left an hour late. Had 12 drop offs to deal with, 5 of which were sick pets, and 2 were surgeries. One of those became an emergency surgery that lasted a good 5 hours. And then we had appointments starting an hour after that so in that hour we had to deal with those 10 other drop offs. All I can think about now is how much **** I probably missed or screwed up because I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off.

This is my go-to happy video for when my day sucks...

"I'm crushed... just totally crushed!"

Sorry things didn't go well. 🙁

Bright side: I have the next two days off. Though sadly I won't be able to fill them with WW now...

I feel bad for one of my coworkers who was there just as long as I was and worked just as hard, and she opens in the morning.

Finding housing... here I was thinking that February was still pretty early and that I'd have few if any issues... :diebanana:

It's actually cause it's probably a bit too early. I'm having that issue now because I have to move for my internship but I'm more limited on how frequently I can go check out places. I had been sort of hoping that if I wasn't necessarily going to be in a college town that'd it be a bit easier to find things ahead of time, but it's not.

That's definitely feasible. This is the first time I've had to go searching for housing on my own, too, so I'm new to this whole business, which doesn't help.

Ah, well. I suppose it'll work out eventually.

I've done it and it's still stressing me out. I have to move 5+ hours away but I only have some weekends to visit places and I'm having a hard time finding a place that'll let me have my dog/guinea pigs within my budget.

When I was in undergrad the good rentals started signing leases in Sept/Oct for the following school year. That's insane. There will be something somewhere....you just might be moving after your first year to get something better. Good luck!

Eesh, that does sound super stressful... I hope you can find somewhere soon! :xf:

Yeah, I was thinking this earlier. I've got several inquiries that I've made, so I'm hoping something comes out of one of those. I'm the type of person who just really prefers to have things set in stone way in advance. That's crazy that the good rentals started so late! 😱

Hmm maybe I made it unclear? So for 2016 school year starting in August, kids would sign leases sept/oct of 2015. So looking in Feb '16 for Aug '16 was bound to yield less than desirable results. Is that how you interpreted what I said?
I like to have stuff set early too. I feel your pain. Still another month before I even find out if I get in....then I get to start searching for housing :-(

Edit: I think I fixed the part that was supposed to be a quote...I suck at this.

Dang! I went to undergrad in Seattle which has a pretty insane rental market, and even there Feb/early March was early enough to get a decent place (but you had to put a deposit down even just to apply, which sucked). If you didn't have a rental by spring break (mid-March) you where screwed though.

I mislabeled one thing on the Wiggers Diagram we had to draw from scratch on our midterm. I lost one point. My friend mislabeled/completely didn't label 6 things and lost 2 points.

I normally wouldn't squabble over just one point, but how does that even make sense?

I bet that slacker vet WTF doesn't even know what a Wiggers Diagram is.

It has to do with cardiology somehow, but that's all I got.

It just makes me think of this though...

Yep, that huge graph that lines up a normal ECG with atrial volume, ventricular volume, ventricular pressure, etc. We had to draw it from scratch as part of our exam. Even though I thought it was kind of weird to have that as a decent chunk of our exam, it did help me understand what the heck was going on. My classmates may or may not have made some interesting memes regarding the name of the diagram, haha.

Starling forces...got that question wrong 😳

Uhh, don't know how it "makes sense" but why the hell are you comparing exams? Just don't, you'll drive yourself insane. Instructors grade oddly, if you do compare make it for a ****s and giggles and not to get upset that the grading wasn't consistent or "fair".

I'm not upset, it's one point. It's just a rant. I never said anything about fairness.

Just watched quarter sized hail pound my rental car for 10 minutes... Car is okay but seriously? I'm also soaking wet. What a day...

You made it seem like you would be "squabbling" over a point. Maybe that's where the confusion came in?
Possibly. It doesn't help matters when your 'course mom' says (to the group of people really confused about the same issue) "Yeah, they do seem to have been graded rather inconsistently. That's what happens when you grade a huge volume of papers in an extremely short period of time." :eyebrow: I'm no professor, but it seems weird to have not adhered to some sort of rubric and instead subjectively evaluated and assigned points from there. It's not like it was an essay question where explanations could have differed...it was a graph we had to spit out from memory. Just annoying, that's all.
