We had one where I used to work and it was motion activated so anytime anything passed in front of it, it would go off. I can't tell you how annoying it was when a dog would sit right in front of that door waiting to leave as the owner checked out. We finally cut the line.

Did you pick the right profession?) my environmental allergies combined with domesticated ones as of late have become intolerable (and I know the whole wash your pets, wash your bedding, vacuum, etc spiel)

I had a minor panic attack when someone's phone rang at the hospital and it was identical to the nextel ringers they use to track you down out at New Bolton. I wanted to curl into a ball and hide under the desk or something.

I had an aversion to the intern and resident's cell phone sounds because it was never anything good when they'd start ringing. I'm surprised none of them chucked the phones into a river or a wall or dropped them in the middle of a highway. I started to hate my own phone's ring too because it was most often me getting called in to ICU.... heck even after I was done with school and out of the state, I'd see the area code if the school and panic that I was being called in.

Realized yesterday that since my schedule will be changing for the month of August (from having Mon/Tues off to Wed/Thurs), that means I'll be working 7 days straight this upcoming work week (not the worst, but I do enjoy having a normal work/weekend ratio and not having to wake up early...).
Actually the whole month is going to be a mess because I and a couple others are going back to school, part-timers cutting back hours, people requesting vacations, less volunteer help...On the plus side though they were very accommodating of my schedule needs, shifted my off days for my upcoming orientation and dropping me down to weekends-only once the semester starts. Just wish the internship had been run from May-August rather than June-September so that it wouldn't have had to work around school at all.

It was one of those big plastic envelopes and hadn't been tampered with. So not only was it not opened, it was also functionally useless. The package was clothes, so it couldn't even be used as a door-stop. 😛 No idea what took them so long.

...feel so desperate not being able to help my toy poodle. I keep hearing more and more about the damage the vaccination, antibiotics, and the steroids the vets are prescribing, and it's like those vets are programmed to see you walk in, take your credit card, and give every pet the same advice, put them under anesthesia to clean their teeth and get them fixed, give them prednisone, Benadryl, and antibiotics for everything, sell you pills to prevent fleas and all other possible illnesses, and sell the food they have on their shelves. Then you go back next month after everything wears off to leave another large payment, and I've been on this for many years. I understand they have to make a living, but those poor pets are desperate scratching to the point they bleed. It's horrible!!! This needs to stop!!! I am starting to believe more and more in holistic practice. Less is more and better 🙂

Apoquel is nearly miraculous, and we've had good results with IL31. But that's all just another conspiracy from the robot vets who like the old fashioned crack dealer gives you just enough relief to keep coming back for more.

Lmao the number of people I know peddling absolutely godawful treatments for their animals is so high. We get a lot of them at animal control too. Had a guy dump citronella oil on his dog's back to prevent fleas, ended up covering his dog in massive burns from the oil. Other people are insistent that garlic and onions kill fleas, which I guess you could argue they do since fleas can't really live for long on a dead dog. Other people are insistent that their pets can't get heartworms because they're "inside" animals. I even had a hoarder yell at me that she would sue us if we vaccinated her animals. I can't imagine what she thought the vaccines would do to her pets that her toxic house hadn't already done.

I also have a friend of a friend now who is a complete quack that I can't deal with. She is insistent that turmeric is a superfood for her dog, feeds raw, gives her dog coconut oil every day, thinks steroids are the devil (someone help her poor dog if he ever gets itchy skin for any reason), and constantly posts articles from Dr. Peter Dobias on Facebook (I feel like the Dr. portion of that should be in quotation marks).

Granted, I do understand not wanting to overmedicate. I'm a firm believer in conscientious use of medicine. There are also many non-medication/surgery based interventions that do help animals (acupuncture comes to mind). My issue is that these interventions are recognized as beneficial and then brought into the fold of evidence based medicine and it seems like most "holistic" treatments loathe the "evidence" portion of that statement. Having a strong feeling that something is good for your pet isn't the same as having evidence to support those feelings.

However most medication prescriptions are warranted and definitely not part of some vast conspiracy to steal money from clients. If you can't handle paying for monthly expenses to keep your pet well maybe you should have considered that before you got a pet.

Lol that's such a weird thing to say. I always heard people say "I'm going to vet school and I'm currently interested in practicing on XYZ or going into XYZ specialty." I mean, that's what I say.

Sorry to hear you won't be there for your mom's surgery. Is it a big surgery or is it one that's more on an outpatient basis?

I definitely agree that steroids can have their own issues and shouldn't necessarily be the first medications to jump to for many health problems. I just also don't believe that that entire group of medications is abhorrently awful and that someone is a bad pet owner for using them, which is what that one particular person yells about on facebook all of the time.

We've had some bad cases where Apoquel will just barely take down the level of itchiness but not enough to stop the patient from scratching himself raw. I can think of one dog who is on long-term steroids because nothing else worked, and the doctors have been very clear about the risks, but it's the only thing that seems to help. So I understand that person's frustration with their toy poodle and why they'd feel disillusioned with more conventional medicine. But what is anyone supposed to do about it? Sometimes the best you can do is either make it not-as-terrible or make it better at a significant risk, and that's not the fault of those dastardly robot vets.

Plus, it actually makes sense to say that. You're not implying that you'll be adequately trained in a specialty upon graduation, nor are you saying you're only studying one specific thing. It's different to say you care most/are most passionate about something vs. "My DVM education is specifically about ___."

I just think depending on the context, it can be misleading like you said. Mostly it comes off to me as the person not really understanding what you actually cover in vet school or are trained specifically to do, but I mean it's also Facebook so they can say whatever they want. There are still a surprising number of "Which school do I apply to if I don't want to bother with large animals?" questions coming from undergrads who are applying... I just think there's enough misinformation or general lack of knowledge when it comes to a DVM program that saying slightly off things about your degree aren't helping. Just today I had to explain to a girl who wanted to be a tech what 'DVM' meant and that it's a four year degree beyond your bachelor's, and that she won't also be a DVM after tech school. I'm still surprised regularly how little people know about our education.

Ugh, I work the front desk at one of the dorms during the school year and Res Life hires students to be in charge of all of the scheduling/running of the actual desk. The new desk manager sent out the shift schedule and it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. He clearly favored all of the people who worked at this particular desk before, as one returner has six shifts, and a few others have four/five. All of the people new to this desk got one four hour shift a week. How the heck is anybody supposed to make any money with that? The last desk I worked at on the same campus guaranteed us at least two shifts a week (and we could discuss with her if we wanted more or fewer shifts) and that manager was awesome and followed through as promised. Nobody here is looking for full time work, but I would literally make $66.50 every paycheck without taxes on this schedule while other employees would be making nearly six times that. This is ridiculous.

She's getting a pacemaker put in, so a pretty big deal in my eyes. She's only expected to have to stay overnight, so it might not be quite as invasive as we were originally thinking though.

At some schools tracking is not an option, so as a fourth year you'd be 'stuck' doing rotations with things you have no interest in, as opposed to a school (like where I went) where tracking is an option. I didn't do a single large-animal thing all fourth year except for the Clin Path and Necropsy rotations (and on the latter, we more or less self-divided into groups based on interest.... I did one horse necropsy but otherwise all SA). That could be one factor some people would consider.

Wow, I've only seen maybe one or two dogs that Apoquel hasn't helped exponentially and I'm pretty sure you and I are in the same county...

It's not a high horse for one person in this industry to stand up and call out someone else for being pointlessly judgmental of her colleagues, which is what you are doing. I'm simply defending the people you are attacking.

Clearly it isn't "totally fine" or you wouldn't be so defensive.
