She is just plain cray cray. Period.

Let's see. Her basic gripe is that the ER is too expensive and that they didn't offer options. She used the phrase "all or nothing," and argued that they should be finding ways to meet the client's needs.

So what are - by her own admission - the facts? Client presents to ER, ER dx's pyometra, ER offers gold-standard care of surgery for $4-$5 (same as what it would cost me to offer it to a client). Client can't afford. So does the ER <ACTUALLY> go "all or nothing"? Nope, they come up with an alternative - SQ fluids and start abx so the lady can follow up for cheaper care. Which is what happened. And the dog lived (at least, so far).

So what she's bitching the ER should have done .........

........ is exactly what they did. Ta da!

And btw, it's unfair to compare her $900 price to the ER $4000-$5000 price. The ER already dx'd the problem - that cost the exam fee plus radiographs (plus maybe blood work if the ER did that, too). In my hospital, exam+blood+rads is $700+. So if the ER did all that for her, her $900 price is really $1600. The ER's price also would have included continued overnight recovery care - several hundred that her $900 price didn't include. She is being INCREDIBLY unfair by trying to claim that she dealt with the problem for 4-5x less than the ER. Stunningly unfair.

What a weirdo fruitcake special princess she is....

I've done what that ER did many (many, many, many....) times. And before some argues "hospitalize and supportive care and then transfer - don't just send them home" .... hospitalizing ALONE eats up another several hundred (beyond the many hundred it cost me just to dx the problem to begin with), and could potentially mean the client doesn't have money left over for surgery. So in that ER's shoes, I'd do the same darn thing. A bit of supportive care, roll the dice and send the patient home and hope their pDVM can do the Sx first thing 'morrow.

But what's that? Oh yeah, in another video she bitches about ERs using up all of a client's money on dx with no money left over for tx.

So again - ER did exactly what she's wanting them to do: ER dx'd the problem, offered gold standard care, found another solution that preserved funds so the dog could get treated. Didn't burn up all the money on overnight supportive care. And the dog lived. Everyone wins. Except the ER, who gets roasted for doing their job really damn well.

People like to talk about our higher cost needs, and that's all totally legit. We have endoscopes and arthroscopes and CTs and MRIs and square footage devoted to nothing but chemotherapy/oncology. If it's slow we don't get to send home staff to conserve money - we have to pay them to sit on their ass and watch a movie or sleep.

But one thing people forget to include is that quite honestly: We deserve to get paid more on a minute-by-minute basis. Not because we're better than the GP folks (we aren't), but because we're paying a higher price with our own health.

There is a MOUNTAIN of evidence about just how awful overnight work is for you.

So to my way of thinking, that calls for getting paid more. We are literally jeopardizing our health just to be available at 2AM for some stupid owner that didn't spay their dog when it was a puppy, ignored the two or three weeks of lethargy leading up to the crisis, and now wants us to fix their pyometra dog for a few bucks and a wink and a nod. So yes, we deserve to be compensated more than the same staff performing that function during the day.

Anyway. She can go take a very long hike off a very short pier. I'd feel sorry for her because she's clearly deranged, but ... that's kinda like feeling sorry for a crazy guy who hits you over the head with a rock. No matter how much you intellectually understand that it was the crazy causing it, you just aren't going to forgive the crazy guy anytime soon. That's where I'm at with her. She's unfair, irrational, and cruel, and she deserves nothing but condemnation for her unprofessional behavior.
I've heard she's now crying victim over tha backlash she's received from other vets. She says she's being cyber bullied, which her original video is kind of cyber bullying too.

A friend of mine posted the video along with a "bravo!" type comment. I had to say something...

This x 1000. I spent 2 years doing a day job with on call. Unless the compensation is insanely good, I will NEVER do overnights or on call again. When I was job hunting this year, I interviewed with two places. The one that needed overnights and holidays actually offered me LESS money than the day job. I was floored, and AFAIK, that clinic is still looking for a vet 6 months later. Overnights and holidays should absolutely get higher pay. That **** is hard. I have mad respect for anyone doing it and they definitely deserve to make more money.

I'm completely deaf in my right ear and my left ear has had the WORST tinnitus the last 30 minutes or so. So I can barely hear any thing except for this obnoxiously loud & high pitched ringing. It usually fades away by now, so I'm irritated.

One of the hospitals I used to work for just posted an article on 9/11 working dogs from Mercola/Kathy Becker on their social media sites. Why would you directly link your clients to a source like that? Even if the article doesn't contain their typical "pet food causes cancer and vaccines are going to kill your entire family" lunacy, it's all just a click away, and you've legitimized them as a source.

*cringe*

I get tinnitus too (unpredictably) and I hate it.

Ugh. It's the worst!!! Mine's also unpredictable and it's just so frustrating.
Mine occurs about 90% of the time, so pretty much constant. It's really fun to try to tune it out and be able to hear people...

Oh is it? Yikes that's rough. So I'm curious- for y'all binaural folks, is tinnitus in one ear or both? I have no hearing/ sensation in my right and I've always been curious!

My husband's tinnitus is constant, and one side is noticeably worse than the other. He can't sleep without white noise.

Mine is only in my right ear. I've also recently had the eardrum replaced, but wasn't guaranteed that the tinnitus would go away. Well almost 4 months later, and it's just as bad as before surgery 🙁

Same. Pretty much always there, but only catches my attention occasionally. Rarely a problem, even at work. After 20 years I guess I'm used to never having silence. Mine is both but the left is worse/louder

Mine is mostly my left ear only! I used to get it every night when laid down in bed but it's gotten better recently.

I will happily take my non-hearing ear over tinnitus any day. I didn't realize it was so common - I only know my grandpa who has it, and I thought it was an age related thing. I'm sorry you guys have to deal with that 🙁

What was a good Monday ended horribly.

I got home from class to meet the people who were there to clean my carpet. I asked them to hold on so I could corral my cats since they had to leave the door open. I couldn't find my second cat, and when I went back out to the main room, I saw they had opened the door and left it open despite me telling them to wait. It only took them about 15 minutes to do my whole apartment, but I could not find the damn cat. When they left, I still couldn't find her, so I start panicking. I called my friend over who lives down the street, we look everywhere, nothing. We couldn't find her outside. We get back in the apartment an hour or so later only to hear rustling. Turns out she had found some sort of insulation-filled duct with a hole in it behind my furnace and crawled into it. It was in a small corner behind the furnace, so I didn't even know it was there and couldn't see it without a flashlight/couldn't reach it. Mind you, I knew the laundry/utility room would be trouble, so I blocked it off. She jumped 5 feet over my blockade to get back there.

I calm down (I was dripping sweat because I had an anxiety attack while looking for her...) and try to start studying. Shortly after, I get an email from airbnb saying the host escalated his claim that I broke his oven, even though I was told just yesterday that they dismissed his case. So now I have to open up that wound and relayed my account of the situation in an extremely long email. Now I wait to see who 'wins' and if I am going to be forced to pay $250 to him, even though this entire ordeal is him retaliating against me for leaving him a crappy review.

Luck of the half Irish, I guess.

Very sorry about the airbnb situation - and hoping you prevail.

Very happy your cat was found, safe and well. 🙂

I'm nearly constant with both ears, but its much worse in the right.

Do you have it in writing that they dismissed it (like via email)? Because at that point you should be covered, especially with the history you've shared here. Sorry, that's so ridiculous.

Interesting! I never realized how many people actually had it. I guess I can say I'm rather lucky because mine it just super periodical- 5 minutes or so every couple days. Wow...!

Mine is usually in my left but has occurred in my right too. Sometimes it's pretty bad for a few days, other times like now it's very low level. I have some low grade hearing loss that started in middle school when they thought I had Meniere's disease. Thank goodness the awful vertigo spells have not happened for a few years (knock on wood!) because those were just crippling. The tinnitus is annoying but I'd rather it than the vertigo.

I guess I should see the bright side-she wasn't lost after all. Wow, I have never been so scared in my life!
We were using airbnb pretty often through last summer and well into this summer that just went by and honestly we got whiplash from the different types of host. Some are completely hands off and you'll never see their faces and others are so hands on that they'll try to pressure you to go out to dinner with them when you already have plans. We purposefully stayed at local B&Bs and hotels on our last trip because of it.
PS-happy you found your cat!

I do, that's why I'm thoroughly confused at this point. The email I got late last night stating he escalated the case and that I needed to reply with my side of the story stated he escalated the case three days ago. Yet just the day prior to the email, I was told he had not escalated so the case was dismissed.

WTF. So not only is this host an a**hole, but airbnb is dropping the ball. I sincerely hope I'm covered, however I worry that I may be forced to pay since they are still apparently considering this host's claim a valid one. Currently on hold with the customer service line for 20+ minutes.

It's getting better.

I found a policy on the airbnb website stating that a host has 48 hours post checkout to file a claim for any damages or must do so before the next guest checks in, whichever is earlier. He filed after 48 hours AND after the next guest checked in. I mentioned this and asked why this case was allowed to continue given that there is a clear policy stating he had to have done this within 48 hours.

Answer: 'Since you let us know the oven was broken two weeks prior, we decided that this fell within the eligible time frame." HOW DOES ME ASKING FOR ADVICE SINCE THE HOST WAS NOT OFFERING ANY SORT OF RESOLUTION TO HAVING NO WAY TO COOK GIVE HIM A PASS FOR YOUR POLICY? 48 HOURS POST CHECKOUT =/= TWO WEEKS PRIOR. If anything, they should be telling him that he should have filed at that time (but he didn't, because he acknowledged that it just stopped working and plainly stated in the airbnb chat that he would not charge me for this). So because I reached out to airbnb for help (I did NOT file a case), I'm getting screwed. This is unreal. They are granting him an exception despite their being proof he acknowledged the dead oven and said "things happen, no account charge." I don't even know what to say at this point. It could take weeks for them to decide whether I'm forced to pay him or not.

I am not enthused with human med lately....

Recently (more like 5 weeks ago..) I've gotten really sick (to the point where I had to switch my clinical schedule around to have a break). My PCP did a fabulous job of trying to figure out what this is, but they exhausted their options, so I was referred to two specialties. One, the one I really wanted to go too, is almost 3 months from now.... but the other one was schedule right away, so even if it is just an overlapping disease, they should be able to handle that, right?

Apparently, wrong. I was seen by a doc that told me if I took enough NSAIDS/pain meds it would go away and I'll be fine... WHAT? I'M NO CLOSER TO FIGURING THIS OUT AND I JUST PAID $400 TO SEE YOU TO YOU TO TELL ME TO TAKE MORE OTC MEDS? 😡

🙁

Been there done that with a neurologist, I don't understand how these "specialists" think chronic pain treatment with OTC meds is okay without figuring out what the problem is.

Get yourself a lawyer. I think someone somewhere on here mentioned that there might be free services through school (or that might've been someone from here saying that off here, idek anymore) but that's not right that they're allowing him to have a case and file a claim when it's gone against their policy already.

I have a classmate with a law degree who I'm going to talk to. If he thinks it won't be a huge waste of time, I'll head to the legal center on campus since I think we do have free services.

Agree 100%. This is beyond ridiculous and I would absolutely seek legal advice from your campus service.

I feel like this is the time to escalate to higher ups. Demand to interact with a manager or supervisor because of the ridiculousness, make sure every conversation is recorded via screenshotting chat windows or saving emails, and agreed with the above posters on the legal advice. Sorry this is happening.

I tried that, but I'll have to keep trying. At this point, I'm being told I cannot discuss this with anyone but the person handling the case, who is the person who is breaking that stated policy in favor of the host. Said person is also working nights which is an extra pain in the a**.

Edit: Said person also lowkey told me to stop asking questions and let airbnb "mediate fairly." So yeah.

Sorry to hear your situation has not been resolved in your favor.

Have you considered contacting some local television stations and inform them about your problem with airbnb (especially since you have written evidence)?

Where I live, some local television stations often present "consumer problems and consumer protection issues" as special interest stories. It's amazing how quickly consumer cases are resolved when unscrupulous vendors (or services) are confronted with the possibility of negative publicity.

Just a friendly suggestion, that's all.

Perhaps you can contact your PCP and ask her or him to indicate that your case merits "urgent" attention (especially if you are presenting with escalating pain)?

Many times, a case marked "urgent" will allow a specialist's scheduling personnel to fit a new patient in much earlier (as opposed to 3 months later).

Just a friendly suggestion.

Agree.

If you have legal services on campus, it's advisable to consult with them. Airbnb has been bombarded with many consumer protection complaints.

Thanks for the advice DocS! I will give that a try, at this point I don't care who I see or what it is, I just want to be normal again 😳

Definitely an idea. My lawyer friend suggested taking real action if they side with him and force me to pay, so I'll keep this in mind.

Just locked myself out of my apartment building in the rain with the dog. Had to obnoxious buzz some random person's room with lights on to see if they'd answer and let me in.

Got a message from my mom saying that she had to go to the ER this morning and just got out of surgery to repair a hole in her retina... so yeah...

Ugh. Seems like vet school is often a magnet for life happenings that are not desirable. tested to the max. Hope all is well.

Oh wow that sucks. Good vibes to you and yours.
thanks Coop!

I definitely agree with that. Geesh. She says she's doing fine and is currently relaxing with a glass of wine because not even eye surgery could make her abandon the true reason she went to California.
Sending good thoughts to your Mom. Hope she is doing well! 🙂
thanks Doctor-S! Last I heard she's doing well! It wasn't a full anesthesia so she says the recovery time isn't too terrible. She's out of the hospital now and seems to be okay! Still worried though. Not entirely sure how you get a hole in the retina in the first place...

Unless I'm thinking of something else, some people are more prone to it than others. I had an eye exam this year and the Dr mentioned something like 'and I'm sure you know about this, but your left eye is prone to retinal detachment . . .' NOPE NO ONE EVER TOLD ME THIS. It only makes me like 1% more likely to get a tear, but it's possible. Maybe your mom had the same issue with her eye? It sounds like she had it addressed quickly and that's the most important thing. It's highly treatable as long as you have surgery right away, from what my Dr told me.

I'm glad she's doing well and enjoying California!

I have no idea if hole = tear = detachment, but I know my dad had a retinal detachment YEARS ago, had surgery and is completely 100% fine now. DONT FREAK OUT TOO MUCH PBC
