no offense to the neurologists out there but i literally despise learning about the nervous system OMG
also felt completely clueless in anatomy lab today, don’t ask me shi about any ganglions
Don’t ask me shi about most neuro things. That all left after navle 😂

no cuz why am i just looking at spaghetti. also some of our specimen are just not well dissected for the nerves so it gets frustrating.
also cardio is so hard for me. its ok guys its not like the heart is important or anything
no fr is it an artery? nerve? connective tissue? who knows! i spent a solid 30 minutes isolating what i thought were nerves, then the prof comes over and rips them off (they were just connective tissue)

How did you all do it then? I feel like I never could have learned anatomy if I wasn't dissecting.
It was previously dissected out for us, but we still had to go through and identify everything. We’d get a quick demo, and then get told to find everything ourselves.

wow yea our dissection isn’t even guided, we’re given a cadaver and a dissection book and thrown to figure it out ourselves 😭 the profs are circulating to answer questions, but i really wish they were doing it alongside us bc 95% of the time we’re all like wtf are we looking at

Low key would prefer that because trying to find a small structure when your group or the group before you accidentally hacked it off is frustrating 🥲

Twas me. Sorry c/o 2028. I was overzealous with my scalpel quite a lot.

Until you're off in la la land and you get told by the teaching tech that you're cutting off the fascia lata.......
Generally you want to avoid la la land with a scalpel in your hand.

oh whoops I feel bad for complaining— our stuff has been dissected for us. the arteries have red latex and the veins have blue. the only reason i say ours are poorly dissected is that my group and i will be losing our mind trying to find something and when we ask a prof, they’re like “hmm yeah, you have a bad one”. idk how long they keep things in circulation but not everyone is gentle with them so things just get cut and mangled. genuinely i cannot understand the axillary nerve bc everytime i look at one, it’s a jumbled and cut up mess.

how do you get practice after hours for anatomy then? do you keep your own dissections somewhere at the lab? i love the way our after hours is set up because they leave all these different tubs out and they are labeled by what they are intended to be used for. so we have all kinds of thoraxes that are intended for different things. we have different sets of thoracic limbs for studying brachial vs antebrachial muscles, etc. perhaps i am spoiled lol. we also have plastinated specimen that are really cool to look at, so they leave those out for us too.

next week, we start to do our own dissections though!!

we have access to our cadavers + other people’s cadavers 24/7 so we can always go into the lab after hours and take whichever one out to practice. as long as we don’t cut anything on other people’s cadavers. the profs use everyones cadavers for practical exams so we have to get used to looking at other people’s dogs (my group has a beagle, other groups have giant bully mixes, huskies etc). we do have plastinated species too to look at

Plus we only focus on what the surgeons at my school determine are important to know. So knowing all the little details of branches of veins and arteries unless they are massive or directly supply something we didn’t care for.

Im so sick of my job. Can’t imagine being here another year (can’t believe I’ve even made it to 1 year tbh when i figured out i didnt like the job 2 weeks in)

But feeling trapped because of the economy. It’s decent pay (research associate) but mind numbingly boring, I dislike the people I work for and with and do not care for the work itself.

I’d rather work as a technician in a clinic, as it would serve me better for the future and give me more vet hours since mine are a little low and mainly research focused. I was actually hired at my dream clinic earlier this year, but ultimately had to turn it down because $19/hr for a 40+ min commute aint it when i’m currently making 55k in half the commute time.

I’m just feeling stuck and if I don’t get into vet school this cycle idk what im gonna do lol cause i hateeee it here

Please let it be friday already!!

because getting off at 830pm (we close at 5pm but do ER) and cleaning up human pee was not on my or my techs to do list today (no it was not a child nor an old person's). And today was a Friday and of course we were short staffed🙃🫠pls send thoughts and prayers for this weekend on call😅

had my first two exams of vet school last week, and i passed, but im struggling with looking my letter grades right now cause they are lower than anything i ever had in undergrad. all my professors say confidence is key but idk how to be confident with these letters staring at me. how does one deal with it??

I don't know if this'll make you feel better, but assuming you're not trying to get a competitive internship where GPA matters:

Here's a new equation you can learn: C=DVM

C's get degrees finally applies here.

My favorite version, which doesn’t even include grades or numbers is:

What do you call a person who graduated at the bottom of their vet or medicine class?

Doctor.

Hello, hi. I actually failed out of vet school and rejoined with the class below me. Then almost failed out again due to a family tragedy. I ultimately graduated 134/134.

You know how many people think I graduated bottom of my class? Or that I failed once? Absolutely no one. People are shocked to learn it.

I faked it till I made it, baby. And now I get to be a damn good doctor, regardless of my abysmal GPA.

Overhearing someone talk about you, really sets things in prospective about how others view you. Realize I’ve got some things I need to fix when I speak to people, because I come off very negative and rude at times. Nothing I don’t agree with this person on.
I just want to commend you for your attitude towards this situation. If people viewed more situations like this with a growth mindset, the world would be a better place.

Your grades are not a reflection of how good a vet you will be. I always tried to take solstice in the fact that while I struggled in the classroom, I knew I would kick ass in clinics. I had many a class that I scraped by in. Things that I did to mentally protect myself: I never looked at my class rank. Ever. I never knew it and still don’t know it and never want to know. And I really tried to not to look at like the class average and compare my grade to it, I just put my head down and grinded to pass. Remember, the last person in your class at graduation is still a doctor.

little awkward to write in here after my last post…. But I just failed my first histo/phys exam and man that just made my mental worse. Reached out and asked about counseling. Definitely hard to see any positives about myself right now. I keep comparing myself to my classmates and logically I’m aware that’s unhealthy but it’s very hard to break old habits I guess (if any of my classmates read this please have mercy)

i graduated from ISU a while ago. do they still offer tutors? i think it was set up through OASA? i took advantage of that for anatomy, and it was really helpful. they had them for all 1st year courses, and some of the awful ones 2nd year 1st semester.

yeah they still have tutors, students will only get recommended for tutoring if they score low enough on an exam. I'm expecting an email from OASA about it sometime tomorrow so I'll be taking advantage of it to try and improve

vet school is just so much harder than undergrad, and sometimes it takes a while to figure out how to study effectively.

I got a tutor recommended to me after my very first mid-term in first year. It isn't a great feeling but I am living proof that you can still survive vet school and be good at what you do despite a bad grade (or several).

I love tutoring. But I’m so burnt out from how ungrateful and demanding people can be from it. It’s a Friday at 3 pm, why am I getting texts asking if I can tutor today? Or people canceling or showing up late? You’re the one who schedule this not me.

I’m barely surviving as is right now, and this is just pushing me over the edge
