There is a stray kitty in my apartment complex and every time they come around Chunk (kitten whiskers) goes crazy with meowing and trying to get them to come over. I think he is lonely and wants a friend and it makes me so sad. He is such a friendly lil guy and I know he would love a buddy, but with clinical year coming up and having to move all over I just can't do another animal. But it hurts to see him get so excited 😭😭 picture is of Chunky Monkey in his most seductive pose.

The horses that Washington State uses in large animal terminal surgeries. They’re USDA research horses and would have been euthanized after the research project anyways.

I wish that PETA would just wither away 🙄

Oh man 😬 hopefully they don't get the surgery program shut down.

Some of peta's campaigns are so insane that it's scary. Like:

Somebody took the time to draw this.

Thinking about the time an animal rights group snuck into some poultry farms in the middle of the night to take videos and tracked HPAI into the farms so all the chickens ended up getting culled anyway. Smart thinking :beaver:

Mom pick me up I’m scared

Look at my GPA which is currently a 3.67. I'm sitting pretty solid with Bs and a few As this semester, but I'm feeling as if I'm not going to have a competitive GPA for match :dead: . I have clubs and summer scholars and I have worked all through vet school, just having an anxiety moment that it's not going to be enough.

You will be absolutely fine.

I know, I know. I'm just having imposter syndrome/stressy/baby vet student panic.
I matched to a surgery residency and my vet school GPA was like a 3.71, I think? You'll be fine. I promise.

How does the grading scale work for most US schools? I checked out of curiosity and saw in most places online talking about US undergrads an A+ is a 97-100, A 93-96, A- 90-92. That seems quite difficult to achieve??? Here, an A+ is a 90-100 (4.3), A is 85-89 (4.0), A- 80-84 (3.7). At AVC grades are reported just with 1-100 numbers but in undergrad it was on the letter and 4.3 scale. Does this mean in order for US students to get close to a 4.0 you need to basically be doing flawless on all tests??

My school did A, B, C with no + or -, A was 90-100, B was 80-89, C was 70-79 etc. our class ranks were based upon actual numerical grades in each course. At one point, my GPA was higher than my friend’s because I had one more A than she did, but her class rank was higher because she had a few high Bs and I had low Bs. The place I did my residency did use +/- so smaller differences in numerical grade did affect your GPA more significantly. But my residency institution also had grade inflation compared to the school I did my vet school at…at my vet school I was right around 50% class rank and my GOA was a 3.2, but where I did my residency, students with a 3.2 were bottom 20% of the class. That’s why class rank is often used in residency and internship apps because it’s a little more standardized between schools.

But yes, someone with a 4.0 will be getting 90+% on every course. How difficult that is depends on the course.

4.0 is As only. Some schools break it down like this

4.0 = 90-100 = A
3.0 = 80-89 = B
2.0 = 70-79 = C
1.0 = 60-69 = D

Some get more specific:

4.0 = 98-100 = A+
3.7-3.99 = 95-98 = A
3.5-3.69 = 90-95 = A-
Etc.

It gets really complicated when classes have different systems (like mine do lol).

I have my OSCE tomorrow at 1pm until like 5:30. I've been waiting all week to just take this damn exam and it's been so tough just sitting at home practicing a little bit and trying to keep myself busy all week. It was fun the first couple days cuz I was like wow I basically have a 2 week long spring break rn but at this point I just wanna get it over with 😭 I'm dreading it but my friend said they had some killer snacks LOL so hopefully that will help
6 hours later... I am home. I don't know how it took me 45 minutes to get home LOL but I'm a zombie so probably explained that way. It went well but I am DEAD

The snacks were pretty bomb tho. Was impressed by the drink selection

We don't get snacks with our OSCEs! Ours are shorter though. You've got it over with! Congrats

another cycle completed. no acceptances but two waitlists, unsure about getting off them. guess it’s time to start a new career since i have no clue what else to do now
It ain't over til it's over! I hope you are on waitlists that move (because some of them certainly do!) and I wish the best in them moving in your direction!

Yeahhhhh that’s really the only thing that keeps us going during ours is the promise of good snacks during the whole time. Since we can’t leave for 6ish hours and can’t have access to any electronics, they gotta provide good snacks and coloring pages so we don’t go insane 🥲

You guys, if you happen to be in the frozen breakfast section at the store and get tempted by the new 'doughnut' flavored Toaster Strudels, keep walking. They are literally just empty Toaster Strudels and not remotely like what the picture on the box suggests. Stupid shrinkflation

Speaking of! I brought a bag of chips home yesterday and there were FIVE CHIPS inside!!! Then I dropped them all on the floor... lol

Second rant: why is it so expensive to rent a chainsaw 🥲
I feel your pain. My dad and I spent four hours cutting trees back two weeks ago so the electric company could run power lines to the home I’m building, and though we did exactly what the power employee initially said, we were told it wasn’t enough and we had to go back and cut way way more trees. We spent five hours on it yesterday and are going out to finish today. Luckily I received a chainsaw as a Christmas gift in 2024…

Cutting down trees is no joke. We had to cut a dead tree down in front of my parents' house and it was a neighborhood ordeal. My poor dad almost died up in that tree 😭 I helped my partner's dad cut down some trees one time too and he rented a boom lift (💀) which helped a lot, but we chopped it up and burned it for like 2 weeks after. It's a lot of work

Luckily these trees aren’t huge, but they’re right on the fenceline so we’re having to be careful not to land them on the fence. and thankfully the neighbor gave us permission to go on their land and cut whatever we needed to remove from their side too. But I’ll be happy when this task is over. It saved $6,000 in costs from the power company though to do it ourselves so I keep telling myself it’s worth it?

Oh yeah definitely worth it. That sounds tedious though and hopefully the weather is nice for you guys while you get it done

Wtf. Since when does the power company charge you to do their job?!

Since we’re in rural middle-of-nowhere. Different rules apply, for sure. He said they’d maintain the trees around it once it was up but for new lines we needed 15 ft clearance for them to put them up. I could have run them in a different spot but then they’d be right in my front yard. And buried lines cost even more.

peeved because my job decided to pause training me on advanced skills and assign me a limited set of responsibilities. It's more cost-effective and time-efficient to pull trained, longterm employees from other overlapping departments to fill the gap until I leave in 3 months. I get the logic, but those were things I found most interesting. Bright side is I no longer have to take call and may be able to work out an arrangement to gain specialty experience outside of my shifts which could be a better learning opportunity.

Good to know cause we were tempted

I would have still eaten the chips

Update post tree cutting: Pretty sure I got poison ivy. The next to last tree we cut had dead-looking vines wrapped around the trunk and now both of my forearms have raised, itchy, red rashes right where they would have come in contact with the cut vines as I carried the logs to throw across the fence.

The exact same thing happened at my job before I left for vet school

Hi there! I am a current senior in college, and I just finished applying to vet school. I applied to 14 vet schools. I was rejected by 10, waitlisted at 3, and accepted to one. The one I was accepted to is Ross, which I absolutely love. I wouldn't have applied to Ross if I didn't love Ross. Now, the problem is I have a friend who applied to roughly the same number of schools as me and even applied to some of the same schools, and she got into 4 or 5 schools, waitlisted at the majority, and rejected from rarely any. She has been constantly telling me about how "difficult it is to choose which school to go to" and how "I'm lucky because I only have one to choose from". On top of that, she specifically told me she didn't apply to Ross because she knows she "could get into a US school". When I got into Ross after all these rejections, I was so relieved. But now, I'm struggling to even feel happy about getting in. I just feel like a big idiot because I only got into 1, and it was Ross. I know that it only takes one, and "vet school is vet school," but I can't help but feel this pressure that all my peers are going to vet schools, and they will be looking at me because I only got into Ross, and I couldn't get into a US school. I am waiting on two of my waitlists (LMU and Western) to see if I get off the waitlist. If I get off the waitlist at LMU, I think I would go there, too, but I haven't even weighed my options. I think I'm overthinking this, but could someone talk me off a ledge?

First off, congrats!
Second, comparison is the thief of joy. "Even" Ross gets hundreds if not thousands of applications and the majority are rrejected.There are a lot of things to be said about the ups and downs of for-profit schools and island schools, but I've yet to hear that Ross' curriculum is any lower quality than a state school.

No matter what school you go to, you'll have your share of classmates bragging about how easy X content was for them, how good their grades are/were, how many acceptances they had, etc, etc. None of it matters because you're all walking out with the same degree and you all worked your asses off to get there.

One of the vets I worked with when she was an intern is now a board certified oncologist.

I just feel like a big idiot because I only got into 1, and it was Ross.
If Ross is the right school for you, go. A lot of people apply to the island schools because they’re perceived as “easier” to get into, as “backup” schools, or “just in case” schools. Then, if people only get into the island schools, they panic and realize they didn’t want to move there/pay that tuition/what have you and are forced to either decline a guaranteed acceptance or go somewhere they never liked in the first place. If you love Ross, if it fits in your vet school financial planning, if you think you’re cool with island living, congratulations future doctor! You’ve successfully gotten an acceptance and get to attend a school you’re excited about. That’s a huge accomplishment and should be celebrated.

Now, the problem is I have a friend
This person doesn't sound like a good friend. If they're always so negative and low key negging you to make themselves feel bigger, maybe they don't deserve your time?

You got into vet school and that's huge!! Congrats! Anyone who tries to make themselves feel smarter or better by diminishing that lacks their own self confidence so they're resorting to stealing yours. Keep your head up, you've got this!

I don't think you should spend time or money on an in-person visit for a job you know you're not going to take. You can just tell them that you've had another opportunity come up and thank them for their consideration, but you politely decline at this time.
They ended up asking for an answer three times (he texted me, then emailed, then asked for a phone call) all without ever sending me the official offer or full details. I still feel a little weird about declining a job offer in this economy, but man my gut was screaming at me. Thanks so much, I really needed someone to give me permission to just say no!
