what did i do in vet school today? i anesthetized a fish, examined it, drew some blood, and recovered it from anesthesia! 😍

SOOO cool!! Where did you draw blood from?

My coworker told me he was tempted to adopt one of the aussie pups at our shelter. When I told him about deafness in merles he went through the whole litter to see if any of the really white ones had blue eyes. Turns out the one he had already fell in love with is deaf which is perfect for him since he's deaf too. When that puppy is finally old enough to go home she's going to have the best life.

😀 This makes my heart happy. I have a soft spot for aussies.

Watching a kitten for a friend... he is super cute and is also reminding me why I do not miss the kitten stage of life.

But it is fun to have a little fluff ball running around for the weekend. 😍

Leg amputation pup recovered well. He is up and hobbling around. He went to a wonderful foster home with another future vet. 😀

Having an excellent evening. I FINALLY got to spin on a wheel at class today! So exciting! It's so much faster than using a drop spindle. We all got into a rhythm and accidentally went half an hour late in the class.😀

Then, baked mac and cheese for dinner and now my SO and I are watching the Puppy Bowl. So cute!

My step mother-in-law dyes and spins her own yarn. It's mesmerizing to just sit and watch her.

I kept getting distracted in class watching the other students.

So cool, though. If you are even the slightest bit interested, you should ask her to teach you. It's surprisingly difficult to find a teacher, or at least that has been my experience.

The woman teaching my class is actually a vet, funnily enough. She told us she used spinning to make herself sleepy before bed when she was in school, because otherwise she was too keyed up to fall asleep. I'm thinking I might try that. It seems like once I get better at it it will be very relaxing.

I have tried learning. The results were quite hilarious.

I love deaf dogs ... I fostered a deaf australian cattle dog for about 5 months and she was seriously one of the best dogs ever. We only let her go because her adopter is providing her with a better home than we would have - she goes to the beach with him every morning while he surfs then goes to the office with him during the day 😍 From the moment they met they were both in love.

I need to find something to do before bed that makes me sleepy. I have a class that goes til 10 pm and it's SO HARD for me to go to sleep immediately afterward. Do any of you have tips on how to wind down?

I got 100% on my calculus exam! I didn't forget how to calculus!

Skype interview with SGU is done! Yay!

I know this goes against everything sleep experts tell you, but a lot of times, it helps me to watch a movie (that I've seen many, many times). Recently, I've been doing this with the DVD commentary on, and then I face the other direction so the light isn't in my face - I have a portable DVD player that basically stays in my bed at all times. I also turn the volume as low as I can to where I can still hear it, and I turn the brightness down to a minimum.

*Very warm bath. 😍
*Sleepy time tea. 👍
*Take a melatonin pill. They are completely safe and non-habit forming. They don't help you fall asleep, but help you stay asleep for a few hours(4-5 for me). Which is my main problem if I work the late evening shift and have to be back to work early morning(ie less than 6 hours of sleep)

I lost 9 lbs and 10 inches in 6 weeks! Getting a trainer for 6 months was definitely a good decision 🙂.

I am also getting a cat on Saturday. I caved. I cannot wait.

How'd it go?

I think it went pretty well. The screen froze up a few times and I had to ask my interviewer to repeat a few questions due to audio lag, and I couldn't really see her because she was in the dark, but she seemed impressed with my application and I made her laugh a few times. I had a hard time when she asked what vaccines we recommend here because where I work doesn't do vaccines (critical care only), but I think I managed to come up with them all seeing as I have 4 cats and a dog who are all vaccinated.

Wow! That's very impressive!!! If you've got any good moves for butt toning or getting rid of that stupid above bra, by arm fat, please let me know!!!

I'll be sure to let you know when he uses those terms hehe. He had me walking on the highest incline slightly faster than I normally walk to burn fat.

Another rave:
Just back from seeing naturopathic doctor about fatigue, anxiety and brain-fog. I was very impressed. He talked to me and basically made a chart of all of my potential problems and what I can start doing to narrowing down the list. I received a B12 injection (in case I am deficient), I am going to go off gluten in 3 days if I don't notice an effect from the B12, and I am going to a clinic to be tested for sleep apnea. If all of that fails, there are other avenues to test.

I was sick and tired of going into a doctor and being sent out with a medication or for bloodwork after being in there 10 minutes.

It was also nice to get some advice on my new diet (eating vegan). I am doing a lot of things right. I just have to get some more healthy fats and try to eat more fermented soy products, beans and lentils. I eat very well compared to most people (as in, I eat a ton of veggies and rarely, if ever, indulge in junk food) and it makes me feel good to hear someone else say that.

I had ridiculous fatigue and brain fog (not so much on the anxiety front) most of last year and then it started up again this year. I was so tired all the time, couldn't think straight, was constantly walking into one room and forgetting what I went in there for, couldn't concentrate, etc. I stopped eating gluten and it did miraculous things. I still don't always feel great (I have high EBV titres too, but that's another problem), but it's a thousand times better than it was. I have a friend who has Celiac (no gluten) and is a vegan, so it is possible to do both. A little tricky and definitely worth going to a nutritionist to help you out if you need to go that route, but doable

A few raves:

Spent two hours in the anatomy lab today and feel SO MUCH BETTER about my exam on Friday.

I've found a really awesome group of friends in vet school. If you were following in the c/o 2016 thread, I had a bit of trouble finding a group to hang with. I switched seats this semester and it made all the difference. SO HAPPY.

I'm interviewing for the junior delegate position at OSU tomorrow. I really want it. So bad. I probably won't get it, but that's okay.

I'm helping out with interviews this weekend. So excited to meet all the baby vets!

I may be getting my kitty back in a couple of weeks. She's 75% resolved with her chronic diarrhea. Keep your fingers crossed!

I'm kicking butt in my classes this semester.

Life is good 😀

So glad to hear this! A solid support system can make a huge difference. I love vet school, and I fully believe a big part of it is my awesome crew. 😀

Yay! I'm happy things are looking up for you. Good luck with your interview :luck:

I was going to put this in the rant thread but decided to spin it so it's a rave. I've had 3 major exams in the last 4 days of class (including LA anatomy) and I'm not dead or crying. I'm also still conscious and haven't been the victim of a shark attack yet this week. Last I counted I have all appendages in tact and still don't have a peanut allergy. I don't have crypto. Winning!

Here's to a cheerful 2 more exams and a grant proposal this week and 3 exams next week!

(if you're wondering what inspired this post, it was all of the signs around the vet school reminding us that we choose our attitude and therefore are poor sports if we 'choose' to be grumpy [Fake smile])

I like your attitude. Even with the fake smile at the end 🙂

Edit: says the girl with the grumpycat picture about hating people...

i bet your skype issues brought back some memories for her! we tend to have quite a few technology issues here

Someone once told me my spirit animal is a grumpy cat...rude. And probably true. But still rude.

I smell like horses today! 😍 We got to go out and examine some mares and foals that were born last weekend in my equine repro class. I got to hold the foal while the mare was examined, she was so soft! and she had a bunch of long curly whiskers around her mouth. I haven't interacted with horses for almost a year now so it was really fun to be able to do that today!

I love the smell of horses. I wonder if someone could bottle that. I would buy it.

mm me too! all the good smells without actually being dirty or sweaty. If I could buy it, I'd give it to my SO (if I had one)

Ok uhh, that is ridiculously cute ... and I have some Banana Republic rewards ... so I may or may not buy this shirt in every color too

Oh dear, that is cute. Do you think one could get away with wearing that if they have five cats? (one is a failed foster...and two are my husbands?). I feel I am already pretty far into crazy cat lady territory. :naughty:

Heck yes!! 😛

One of the best cat owners I know has 9 cats!! 😱

My first thought, too. Except I'd pick cows over horses any day of the week unless the horses were miniature. Miniature anything is cute 🙂
