Rearview Mirror: I've got Matchitis, and the only Rx is...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
got the charger for the pda. now i can post some, but slowly. cant wait til i have a computer again. hopefully only one more week.

SO is scrambling 🙁

Supposedly the offers to interview for the CRTP were going to go out today, but I haven't heard anything. Invites for the other year-out programs (Doris Duke and Howard Hughes) did go out today. But nobody on SDN has said anything about CRTP.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'll get one...:scared:

:luck: and yes, the osteo scramble.
very difficult to talk when i am working nights, him days, and a time zone away.

Thanks. I found out that CRTP decisions were delayed, and that notices should go out today or tomorrow. Given that today's about over, I guess it'll be tomorrow. 🙄

How did the SO make out?

At least you found out.

And he's still working on it. I never knew how much more paperwork was involved in the scramble. It's crazy. Will try to catch him tonight to see what happened today. This time thing is crazy!

Not really. Decisions haven't been sent out. 😡 Still waiting...

He must be hurting. All that stress on a very short timeline. Ugh.

I hope you (both) get some good news.

Hope you don't have to wait too much longer. Waiting is terrible.

And yes, lots of stress, but I sadly have the attitude as long as he gets a job somewhere, and he is being a little bit more specific (wants a job where there is a potential for residency the following year). I can see what he wants, so I sit back and listen to him talk about what he's thinking until he figures out what he wants to do.

I guess we could couples match next year this way, but we still haven't decided if that may hurt us in the end and to do 2 separate matches. Not that we've discussed this one in the past few days, but had somewhat discussed it prior to reality.

The wait is over - I got an interview! I'm going to Miami... 😎

...I mean, uh, Bethesda.

ah internet. Kind of. Wireless isn't working, so I'm tied down.

Found out one hospital only went to number 13 on their match list for I think 7 or 8 residents for IM. Just crazy! Found out they usually make it to 25.

I think we still need a FMF smiley on here.

I can't help myself...I keep looking over people's old rank lists and trying to rationalize mine. I certified today.

 congrats!
Just found out another kid from my school is also interviewing at Bethesda. And by "finding out," I mean he came up and clapped me on the shoulder, calling me buddy and asking how I was doing. He was not daunted by the fact that he never acknowledged my existence over the last 2 and half years we were in class. 🙄

I never like it when people act false.

Just another reason to kick ass. 😎

I hate people like that! There are a few complete tools in my class who, after 12 months of rotations with the same subsection of my class, won't even grace anyone else except their little group with even a "hey" or a smile. Weird.

Me too!

Then again, I try to always acknowledge people in my class throughout all 4 years...does that make me fake, or does it mean I just recognize people and say hi and nice to see a familiar face in a foreign city? Maybe it's different if you never flat out ignored someone, but I wouldn't do what this dude did and get all in the business.

No - I say "hi" to folks in the halls all the time. That's what normal people do. Normal people don't act like a friend one day after being a stranger for years.

EM - What happened to the SO? Did he come out all right?

There are a lot of abnormal people out there then 😉

He's unfortunately still working on it. Will have to wait and see. I don't try to bug him about it and let him work through it on his own. Of course my ears are always open and sometimes the mouth too, but usually only if he asks for advice (and no, you may not misinterpret the last sentence).

Been too quiet in here.

So sad this is my last week of EM. I wish I could just stay here and not leave now.

Looking for a book to study for FM. I didn't get Boards and Wards during IM, so I was thinking about getting that for both FM and Step 2. What does anyone think? Is there a better text for FM? (already went throught the clinical rotation forum for ideas)

Also going through interview prep. Real excited about going to Bethesda. If I get in, I'll be working with the folks who change how we practice medicine in this country. 😱 😀 👍

Wish I could help. I haven't had FM yet either. Plus a different shelf thingy so, ya, no help here. I do know that many people say boards and wards is golden for step 2 though. When is your big date? Mine is Aug 11 😱

I have a meeting with a PD tomorrow 😱

I was thrown off when he asked me interviewy questions the first time I saw him and worked with him last week. I'm sure more is to come...oh what to do to prep??? Anything you can offer? (I am spending an entire lunch with the PD, so lots of time to talk.)

I have yet to schedule mine. But I'm going to take it out in Nov.

I came up with a list of possible questions and then practiced answering them in front of the mirror. Your roommates will think you went crazy, but do it. Be hard on yourself and come up with some questions are difficult to answer, because those will catch you up if you haven't thought about those issues in awhile.

- Make sure you're always positive.
- Always use an answer to show a good feature about yourself and try to link it back to your goal - here EM.
- Keep practice answers relatively short - he's asking because he wants to know about you, but doesn't want stories from 3rd grade.
- Think of a few good points about you/your CV (to show off as above) but don't make it akward.
- Lather, rinse, repeat.

Practice enough and you'll get smooth enough to give good answers that highlight your talents and how they will help you succeed in EM.

I've been talking with the PD of the program here, too. Just like the review said, he's damn smart, so when I mis-read some PVCs on an EKG, I felt like a real idiot. Oh well.

Meeting went well. Still smiling. 😀😀😀

Rxn - that survey you are doing - does it include only usmle scores or can comlex scores also be submitted. If you allow the comlex, I will participate next year 🙂

Thanks! Many kids have participated and have sent in COMLEX values. I have to use the USMLE I and II for the score portion of the analysis. But for those with only COMLEX values, I still use all of the rest of their info for the other analyses.

Every contribution is important.

BTW, we're sitting at 32 responses - only 18 more until we reach our annual goal of 50 responses! 👍

Good job.

My problem is that I freeze up. When I'm in a situation where my interaction with person X will "determine my future" (PD, important prof, etc.), I can't think, can't make small talk - I psych myself out.

I also freeze up. When asked what I wanted to know about the program - the only thing I could think of at the time (which yes, I did prepare for that question) - was "how is the health insurance?" Worked as a great icebreaker plus I got a reasonable answer. Let's just say I'm pretty sure that has never been the first question he's gotten because it threw him off. :meanie: Leave it to the ADD brain of mine.

So a very cool thing happened - I ran into my academic advisor (also one of my NIH letter-writers) randomly on campus. He said he and one of my other letter-writers thought I should "be more prepared" for Bethesda, and on the spot told me he wanted to set up a mock interview for me! 😱 😀

I was surprised and thankful for the unlooked-for offer of help, and the willingness to spend the time to help me out (esp. b/c these are very busy people).

But there's been some repercussions - I had to ask for time off to interview, which was allowed. Then I asked for an afternoon to go to NYC for the ACEP student meeting, which was denied. I was approved for time to do the mock interview with my LOR writers, but just this morning, I got a jury summons!

There was a guy in another rotation who skipped out on one lecture, and he got docked 10% of his grade. And here I'm making 4 requests for time off!

The clerkship director is not going to like me...

Fourth year clerkships are SO much more chilled out...

I've fortunately had understanding attendings. Still remember the first week of rotations I had to ask for a little time off 3 different days. I explained what was going on and they didn't have a problem with it at all. Maybe helped that I stayed late one afternoon to make up for most of the time...

So sad I am done with my rotation. Back to reality again.

Good luck getting away.

I found out it is good to ask to see if you can do something. Now have some anesthesia exposure and only 3 weeks of surgery left.

Washed the dog, yardwork, nap....

Number of days until Marvelous Monday? ==> 13!

Number of days until Match Day Madness!? ==> 16!

Just wanted to stop in and say hello! Been a while since I've posted on here. 👍

I'm trying not to think about it...yea, right. Normally I enjoy living in the moment, but I'd love to fast forward to the 16th!

This waiting time reminds me of the time spent waiting for the Texas Med School Match back in the day.....

Tick tock.....

hello all you visitors!

12 more days of surgery left. Not that I'm counting or anything.

Anyone have any experience with Physician Relocation Services? Got a card in the mail, so I checked out their website. Doesn't seem to be anything special or am I missing something?
