UHhh... so this is kind of off topic but I thought maybe people here would have an answer. I am finishing a PhD and I applied to several MPH programs and I'm also applying for jobs and PostDocs. While on an interview, the person mentioned that it was "interesting" that I was also applying for graduate school. It took me a few minutes to realize "Wait a minute... how did they know that I'm applying for graduate school?"

So I went home and googled myself and the first result that came up was my complete application, full name, fall 2013, GPA, personal statement, rec letters, complete transcripts, work history, home address, phone number... everything... publicly available... on the internet.
I'm not a very private person but I'm a little upset for that information to be publicly available
Is that normal? I had no idea...

Which university was this? I saw the same thing with UW and I was wondering what to do about it....

This sounds very distressing, and I am so sorry that you are upset. There is nothing "normal" about these circumstances. First, I would double check to see if any of the materials have sufficient information for identity theft. Some transcripts, for instance, will have your social security number. Name, plus date of birth, plus social security number - all are fodder for easy identity theft.

When you Googled yourself, I assume that you were provided a link with all your materials. What was the web link? A school? Another site? If you can identify it, then follow the trail and contact the link. Also, did you write "generic" essays? If they were tailored for each school, I wonder then if it would be possible to trace it back to that school. Another option is to call SOPHAS. Maybe they can provide some insight.

Public information about our private lives is readily available but only likely when we give explicit - and sometimes, implicit - permission to do so. It is like those random but important notices banks give to let you know what they do with the personal information you give them to open/maintain an account.

There are many reasons to find the trail, not least of which is to protect your identity. Someone may try to copy your essays, for instance. Also, the identities of people who wrote your LORs may show their names, locations, etc.; as such, they themselves may not have their identities circulated.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies/advice.
Yep, it includes my social security number, full name, date of birth.... everything.
And it's University of Washington. I guess, I'm just not really even sure if there was any gaurantee of privacy. I don't think there was any point when they promised not to splash all my identifying information all over the internet... but it never occurred to me that they would.

It's a crime in all states and on a federal level to post that information on the internet without your explicit consent. Even if they take it down they are still liable for the initial release of confidential information.

Has anyone applied to/heard from Brown? Looking at the forums from the last two years, we should be hearing soon, but I'm curious if anyone called Admissions to ask about a specific start date for decisions.

Congrats on the nomination!! Hope you get it. Did they mention what the fellowship was? If so, was it a department one?
Thanks! It's for the Charles F. Scott Fellowship which I believe is for anyone who is pursuing graduate studies at UCLA.

Has anyone else heard back from Yale yet? I applied for health policy and have only received one email from them (1/24) saying my application was in and that they had started 'the initial process of reviewing' my application. Does anyone know if this means I still have to look forward to a 'completed' email before one regarding the decision? Like everyone else I'm super nervous and would love love love to hear back from them (with an acceptance of course 🙂 ) does anyone think there would be any harm in sending them an email expressing my continued interest in the program? Thanks in advance!!

Yeah I received an email a couple weeks after the one saying they received my application saying it was complete. I'm still waiting to hear about a decision though, the wait is driving me crazy!

Well, I just called them and it looks like several people had already called and notified them of the problem. It looks like the page has been removed so hopefully it won't be an issue again.
Thanks everyone and I hope all of the other universities managed to keep our private information private!

Mickey-When did you submit your application? I also have not heard back, with the exception of TWO confirmation emails (annoying) and I applied in late December.

Has anyone heard from Hopkins MPH program? And if so, when did you apply?

Just got a decision from Yale for CDE today. Received a confirmation from them on 1/24.

yes, I submitted my online application on to JHSPH MPH December 1st, I was accepted on December 16th (visible through my online application) I got an acceptance packet on Dec 20th and another email about their admitted students website and information about housing etc. on Feb 2nd.

I submitted my application first week of January and it was verified mid January :/ I so badly want to email them but I don't want to pester them with an email when many are probably in the same boat or still waiting- nor do I want an early rejection for that matter haha. So far accepted by Tulane and waiting to interview at Michigan!! But crossing fingers for Yale 🙂

Really sorry for those who have had their UW applications posted publicly online. How scary! It seems I may have avoided that with mine, but I was wondering how they notified you of your application status. Did you have to check their website, or did they email/snail mail you? Thanks!

They made everything private again, but the links are still there they're just dead if you click them. They did not notify me of the information release and still have not. The only reason I know is because someone else found it and told me. I seriously doubt that anyone who applied at UW was spared from this because when I googled it to show someone else, there were over 10 pages of google results all full of people's names and any link I clicked on pulled up the exact same thing as mine... complete application, everything.

They also released all the information about reviewer assignments and dates the applications will be reviewed on, so just FYI for those of you waiting to hear, they appear to be reviewing applications currently and continuing for the next week or so.

Just wondering whether anyone heard back anything from Harvard?

Wow so this was a huge leak then. I've been checking Google to see if mine was also released but haven't seen anything so far. I'll keep checking it, though. It will be interesting to see if they notify applicants. They certainly should as this is a huge issue for identity theft, privacy, etc. Thanks for the heads up.

I have. The last time I contacted them (in November), they told me that they start reviewing apps in late January. I submitted my app early so they said it will be one of the first ones to be reviewed, and I should contact them if I don't hear anything by mid-February.

So, I think we're still good. When did you submit yours'?

@kageh - I submitted mine the first week of December. If I recall correctly, they will email us saying to check our online application portal for a decision.

I figure we'll most likely hear by February 20th. I just wanted to know if someone was ballsy enough to explicitly ask admissions when their first wave of decisions will be released.

Yep. A friend of mine also applied and I told her about the problem and her application was visible too. She called UW just now and spoke with someone and said they were really nice and apologetic, that they had no idea the documents were visible and have fixed the problem so they're private again.
I can't see anyone else's stuff anymore and it looks like everything is fixed so that's good!

Regarding the Harvard question: I have had a bunch of emails about financial aid, summer enrollment etc. but I they're sent to everyone who applied, beyond that I haven't heard anything yet!

Can't wait for Columbia to say something!!!

HSPH should let you know late Feb to early Mar. When I did my Master's there in Fall 2009, they let me know 3/4/09. Financial aid decisions come shortly afterwards, before the deadline for deciding on accepting admittance.

Just got the BU additional info request...hopefully will hear back soon now with a decision.

Has anyone heard from Yale Health Policy, this is taking forever.

I'm really sorry that sucks. This is driving me crazy. I do not understand why some schools take so long and they seem to send out rejections and acceptances at random times. .

Just got into UT's Epidemiology MPH program! I'm so glad considering this was the only school I applied to!

For future reference:

Undergrad GPA: 3.8/4.0; Upper division 4.0
Major: Community Health
GRE: Q 156 , V 165, W 4.5
Experience: 2 years working in a WIC clinic, 3 month full-time internship at a non-profit for migrant health, hired on and currently working at said non-profit; several years experience volunteering in public health; volunteer/study abroad experience in Latin America; multiple scholarships received during undergrad

Application verified and complete 1/28/13; received receipt of application from UT 2/5/13; acceptance notification 2/8/13

Just got the BU additional info request...hopefully will hear back soon now with a decision.

I got that request over 4 weeks ago, responded the next day, and have heard nothing since. Don't hold your breath.

Seems like they just can't make up their mind! No other school seems to have this problem.

The wait is frustrating as all hell. I still hav'nt heard from my top 3 choices, especially considering that JH has been sending out acceptances for quite a while now. Argghhhh.
Just let me know!!

I was also accepted to NYU and I'm highly considering the program. It's a little scary that there isn't much information on the program but it looks like a good opportunity plus I really like the focus on global health and it was recently fully accredited. Have you heard anything about financial aid?

Hi. Long time lurker here. Best of luck to everyone.

I received an invitation through email to interview for OSU's MHA program and I was curious if anybody else is applying to the OSU college of public health. Is this a good sign? Is it worth making the trip up from Florida?

Yeah, the lack of information on the website is a bit unsettling but I went to their open house in October and fell in love w/ the program. Plus, all of the current students and alum seemed very happy with the program. No word on financial aid yet, I'm going to e-mail the director of admissions within the next couple of weeks to get some questions answered and that will definitely be one of them.

I'm glad to hear that the open house was such a positive experience, I'm in California so it's not possible for me to visit until I actually move there. Taking a huge chance that I'll like it but I don't see why I wouldn't. Does anyone know how the NYU program compares to Columbia's Population and Family Health MPH? Or which program is more competitive? Definitely my top two choices, I just wish Columbia would send out decisions already!

While NYU's program is fairly new, the fact that it is NYU speaks volumes. Also, NYU's strength is that it has begin its journey in public health by focusing on global health, which is essential to the new mission of public health. I'm sure you will be a great fit there. And the fact that it is accredited is all that is important according to CEPH.

Hey, glad to finally see some talk to NYU! I applied to their MPA program in Health Policy and Management. Is GIPH through Wagner or another school? Having grown up in New York and worked with a lot of nonprofits and government agencies here, I can say that Wagner is very respected and has an incredible network. I'd say a third of my coworkers a United Way with masters degrees got them there. At least at Wagner there's a lot of part time students who are working full time, which is a very interesting dynamic for different perspectives but also different levels dedication to the program.

I think to outsiders Columbia still has more prestige (this is Bloomberg NYC), but NYU will still get you the job. Their capstone projects are also incredible experience and students say there's a lot of freedom to carve out their topics according to their interests.
