Rejections

U of ectopic.. lol 🙂
where's the U of PushingEpi in all this?

Got the smackdown from Denver today. 22 and 4 now.

That's it, I've officially crossed over. I now have more EM rejections (11) than EM interviews (10).

Man, I really liked the look of the Denver program. I know a couple of other people from my school applying got interviews out there. I guess they can't interview all of us.

Emory, Arizona (U of A), Vandy, Texas A&M

7 interviews, 7 rejections total-emory, loma linda (this graced my inbox today), vandy, BIDMC, northwestern, indiana, and pitt...why do I feel like I have 8 rejections though???? (I'll recount later just to add to the misery🙂.

Hope someone got an interview they were hoping for!

I guess Stanford sent out a batch today, too. Happy Monday!

rejected today Jacksonville 7 interviews-11 rejections Haven't heard from 25 programs-Does that mean I'm rejected so badly they don't bother letting me know, or does it hopefully mean they've got me on second string?

Not waiting for any more programs--good luck to all

I think at least for some I am pretty sure they may have you on a second string. At least one program I wrote to and asked about my application and they said 'your application is currently on hold, we will let you know if an interview slot opens up'.

so don't lose hope! it sounded like in your post in the other thread you were getting kind of dejected, but I think you should take heart - 7 interviews is fine, according to my calculations even if you are conservative you only need 2 or 3 more to be 100% sure you will match.

say what? 2 or 3 interviews to be 100% sure you match?
?????????????????

And those calculations come from the supratentorial data set don't they.

Seriously, don't be a n00b.

Reading comprehension wasn't the greatest today, I thought that he said 2 or 3 total. 9 or 10 is a good number. Carry on.

Actually, if you review the match data that was published regarding last year's match, the released a data set of Emergency Medicine applicants that showed the chance of matching versus the number of programs ranked. Once you hit the point of ranking 10 programs (so, 10 interviews if you rank all of them) you had a >99% chance of matching. It showed a basic dose response, but that was the near-certain cut-off point. I'm at work but later I'll find you a link to review the numbers, they are pretty interesting if you like that kinda thing.

Now, granted, there are exceptions and this year's data may be totally different than last year's--however-- if you rank 10 places you can feel very safe!

Oh and to the other poster, they meant 2-3 MORE programs (so 9-10 overall).

you only need 2 or 3 more to be 100% sure you will match.

Okay, hold on guys. Before we go crazy on this comment, I have asked like 30 EM residents now over the last few months what rank # program that matched at. ALL have said their #1 choice except 2: 1 who got #8 and 1 who scrambled b/c they didn't rank enough programs. Even most of the postings after match say they got their #1. Of course they could just not want to say they match at their 15th choice . . .

Sooooooo, technically most of us applying are way over interviewing. HOWEVER, my thought is that the less interviews you are offered means the more you need to do since that may be a sign of not being all that desirable (I mean "competitive").

Match Outcomes 2006 clearly shows that about 10 interviews is really when you start approaching 100% matched . . . just for the record.

For those of the anal persuasion:
http://www.nrmp.org/matchoutcomes.pdf
page 28 is where EM starts... a summary of data indicates:

If you rank 1 place, you have about a 50/50 chance,
if you rank 3 places, it is still around 50/50
if you rank 5: you at around 80%
if you rank 7: you are around 90%
if you rank 10: you are at 99.5%

yummy data. yummmmmy.

Don't you think that this is because if you only get 2 interviews and thus only ranking 2 places you must not be such a hot applicant? Otherwise why would anybody who spent money interviewing at 10 places only rank 2? So to me that rank order data really means how many places did you get invited to? At least I think that's true until you get up to 10 because most who get 10 or more interviews actually attend them and only start declining once their #'s are up that high. I bet the people who get 30 invites but only do 10 match at their #1 more often than those who get 10 invites and do all of them. Ya think?

AR1776:

Yeah, I totally agree. The less programs you rank, the less likely you are to match. We don't have the data to tell if it holds true that someone who is invited to 15 interviews and only ranks 3 has the same odds as someone that gets 3 invites and ranks all three. One would assume that the first person has a better chance, but we can't get numbers for that. So yeah, the data doesn't explain everything perfectly.

What it does say is that if you manage to rank 7-10 programs your odds of matching are excellent. This is regardless of how many more interviews you might not have ranked. And even if you don't get that many interviews, you still have a solid chance to match. I think this data should reassure many people who applied to 30 places and got 20 rejections and 10 invites. According to this data, they should match without a problem!

Attention BIDMC. There is no need to reject me twice. The first time was okay. But sending me a second rejection weeks later is just plain insulting. 😡 😡

thanks for the backup... and understanding what my post meant. 🙂

I got my second rejection from Vandy today. Attn Vandy: I'm not quite so stupid that you had to reject me twice in order to get your point across. I got it. Thanks. *glare*

Yeah, the handwritten second rejection was so much more pleasant than the less heartfelt, email rejection from Vandy.

Oh damn, can we expect snail mail rejections from these programs too? They get sent to my parent's house, so any time anything "medical" comes along, I get an urgent phone call that I got something...great...I get to live out rejections with my parents also.

NYU Bellvue

I thought this one was a little short and rude. 😀

23/5

Well, i had a good streak going but just got a couple in a couple hours... not straight rejections but politely worded "waitlistings." Perhaps I will get in off the waitlist, but for now they are rejections:
Wake
NYU-Bellvue

Good luck everyone.

what? seriously? a handwritten rejection. now that's classy. where was this from? I want to apply there just to get one 😉

NYU... the 4th one.

Got the same letter. 😀

Yes, I am literate (I think that is how I got through med. school). I am capable of reading my email and understanding what rejection means in both my Yahoo inbox and ERAS inbox. Do they really need to spend money so I can palpate the rejection in my own home?

Have a great weekend everybody!

Got the axe from Georgetown today. And I was actually at the National Zoo when I got it. Guess I should have walked over to the school and shown some interest. Theirs is a bit more wordy than the rest.

Got the official boot from UCLA/Olive View today. That's fine, I like Harbor better anyways. 😛 22/5 with 5 left to hear from.

NYU-Bellevue EM and UCLA-Olive View/SFVP EM/IM.

That UCLA EM/IM one really hurt as it had been one of my top choices and was my first EM/IM rejection. Of all the programs I had yet to hear from, that was definitely the interview I wanted most.

16 rejections and counting. I got the ol' knife in the heart today by Hopkins. I wasn't surprised, but it really really stung.

I am beginning to wonder if their is secret invisible ink code in my application that says I am pathological...

Finally reached the point of more rejections than invitations. Can't say it was a happy occassion. I now have 10 invites, 11 rejections... I guess 12 if you count Mount Sinai's rejecting me twice. When I saw email number 2 I thought they were contacting me to say, oops our mistake, please come interview. But that was wrong. Still 19 more programs to hear from, but I'm guessing they will mostly reject or ignore. 🙁

Mount Sinai NYC and Hopkins

Wake Forest and MCV/VCU get added to the list. 😡

Got the boot from NY Presby

I should be expecting this as well since I have yet to hear from them. It's okay...I've been rejecting NY, so I've already beat them to it. NY Presby...I REJECT YOU! 😛

😀

Their rejection was short and didn't have any nice things to say. It didn't even say good luck with emergency medicine, it said "We wish you luck in your chosen profession." Maybe I should just reject the other 3 NY programs I applied to since I don't even know why applied there in the first place because NYC is expensive as hell.

Ultimately, this is what did the NY programs in for me.

Haha, me too. I ended up cancelling the ones I did get and then being secretly relieved by NY rejections. If they tell me no, that's one less choice I have to make 🙂

That's funny because I didn't even notice that they wrote "in your chosen profession" until you mentioned it and I rechecked my own rejection and saw the same... I gotta say, that is really rude...

Thought you guys would get a kick out of this... I won't name names, but I had a program send me a rejection on Thanksgiving last week... hrm... Couldn't have waited until Monday, huh? Thanks for the kick in the crotch in front of the family.

Total, I'm sitting at 5 and 12... being an IMG can be frustrating sometimes... sigh... what can you do?

So I scheduled an interview with UNC 3 weeks ago. Today, however, I get rejection letter from them. I've contacted them and they said it was a mistake and I can still interview with them. I was relieved but it makes me wonder...how low on their list am I?...or did everyone get this rejection letter?

I wouldn't worry about it... I got the same series of e-mails from them. I think they probably accidentally sent the rejection e-mail to their entire mailing list.
