O.K. I got my FIRST REJECTION today-tough to swallow. They didn't even wait for a completed app-oh well-probably the first of many.

GEORGETOWN

anyone else?

Georgetown snubbed me out as well....

where else have rejections already been sent out?

'Summa' for me, today. Actually, I was surprised that it took this long to get my first rejection! Yay me!!! lol...

Well geeze I must be the rejection queen...you guys are making me feel like such a looser...I got 2 in 1 hour the other day!!! So far a total of 3 rejections: georgetown, south fl, and allegany. I did apply to lots of places since my step 1 score kinda sucked (step 2 better)......received 9 invites though....but 3 rejections...(hope this makes someone feel better)

9 invites and 3 rejections...i'll take those numbers any day!

nice....

Are rejections coming by email or snail mail? Im on an away and hope im not gonna come home to a mailbox full of rejections 😡 😡 😡

As the residential rejection specialist (ie I got the most), I can assure you that all of mine have come via email thus far.

Rejection from Allegheny the other day.....🙁

Having applied through ERAS two years ago, I notice that this year everything seems to go through the ERAS account as well as through email. Which is nice.

LOL, you just got your first, i have gotten my 4th today, way ahead of you. I sent out 42 apps, am an IMG with step 1 - 78, step 2 - 99, CS - pass and ECFMG - certified and still aint getting nothing but rejections. I also applied to pathology, did you have any back-up?

2 so far, USF and UAB. Im sure there's plenty more to come

Georgetown - I'm a DO though; we have an insider that will hopefully fix that though!
C. bear - how many placed did you apply to that you've already heard from 12?

I am pleased to announce that I got snubbed by G-town also:laugh:

Isn't it funny when we can all laugh at getting a rejection.

Isn't it a little gutsy for a new program to be rejecting people so early in the game, especially considering the Dean's letters haven't been released yet?

It would appear they are rejecting people based simply on scores👎

Maybe. But if an applicant has a couple of failures on mles, some class failures, or maybe a year's leave of absence to study, there's nothing the mspe can do to rehabilitate him.

I don't have any of that. In fact I've got great grades, average board scores, but I am a DO. I don't think there's much reason to it. I guess we'll all see if they have scramble spots open at the end of the match, eh?

I did call all my programs and ask if they accept the comlex in lieu of the usmle. All of them did so I didn't waste my time or money on taking it. Georgetown was the only one that said they strongly encourage that I take the usmle but still don't require it. I really only applied because anywhere Quinn is must be good, right?!?

Geeze...thanx....My step 1 score was below the average.....(better step 2)...and my grades have some room for improvement (not failures)....but I would still hope that a program would look my improvement, step 2, and deans letter...but I have had 3 rejections...

I imagine my step 1 score did reach some preset score......cause I had the rejections prior to even my letters of rec.....

Most PDs view the USMLE scores as predictive of passing inservice (and then cert exams). The first question a PD asks is "Will this person make it in my program?" Not excel, not lead, not contribute.... just pass. If you make a PD doubt that answer you'll have a long uphill road. A lot of programs set cutoffs based on what they believe makes a person less likely to pass. Now, some people may get a lousy Step 1 score because they had bad diarrhea that day, but again, this is based on a program's past experiences.

I have recieved no love, no rejections, nothing... I know it is still early, but I am becoming a bit neurotic over the whole ordeal. I haven't gotten my third letter of rec in. Could that be holding me up? I have a surgery and EM letter in, am waiting on an EM and PICU letter. Should I gently remind my letter writers? Will I recieve interviews without my third letter?:scared:

so far one rejection from USF
3 invites

Im a DO with good grades and above avg comlex and average step 1 scores...i applied to 35 programs so im bound to have more rejections at some point. But im gonna stay positive and hope i end up at the right program for me.

Wow, so how often are these inservice exams given?

YES you should gently remind your letter writers right away. I am couples matching so I have written to a number of programs that my s/o is interviewing at, asking if they could review my application - several told me straight out that they don't review applications until they have a minimum of 3 letters. I only have 2 in ERAS right now, and they got me so worried that my 3rd wasn't going to come in a timely fashion that I went out and got a fourth one.

This is the only thing you have control over right now, so put all your energy towards getting the letters in. Send thank you notes as reminders if you haven't already, send e-mails to ask if they need anything else from you, bug your student affairs office if they have sent the letters over but the admins haven't posted it yet.

Every year.

I was at intern orientation (yes, I'm just an MS2...long story) this summer and some of them were VERY surprised to learn that they weren't done with standardized tests!

Once a year in February.

Every categorical residency has an in-service exam (prelims usually don't take them). For some of them, it's in September (and an intern with 3 months under the belt doesn't usually have much to give).

i think the peds in-service is in july or something.....how can you do anything but fail as in intern...???

I have a lousy 78 for step 1 but worked hard and aced step 2 with a 99, i passed CS and am ECFMG certified, i thought that would make me a little more marketable for interviews but i have applied to 42 EM programs and have gotten 5 rejections already, no invitations at all, EM seems to be out of my grasp. I also applied to Path and have gotten 1 rejection already, sent out 35 applications, can anyone tell me what i did wrong or am i just over-reacting.?

You answered your own question. Like it or not, fair or not, there are a lot of programs who will not even look at DOs. I know that the other three Los Angeles area programs tend to not interview them.

With that MLE CK you are certainly overreacting. I will say this again to everybody: No panics until the second week of November. Most of the invites haven't gone out yet, and will not till after the dean's letters are released on Nov 1.

allylz is right, you need to get those letters. I'm in the same boat you are (1 letter in and 2 out-got scared so I got a fourth and sent 2 "reminders" last week-but I'm still waiting!!) I started cheking websites and some outright said they only review COMPLETE application that are in by Nov 1!!! Wake and maine come to mind. Look at the schools you applied to to see if it is nov 1. It's is hard since this is basically someone going back on their word, but maybe they just forgot. Good luck!

Fetus,

Thanks for stickin' up for me but I didn't catch any sarcasm, so if he was being a jerk, he got away with it. I'm too dumb.😉

Why can't you be a PD for pedi EM? Then again, that would be too nice...

Just finished up on the interview trail - pedi EM in Boston (BU, not Haaaaah-vard), Phoenix, Salt Lake, Dallas, Houston and Denver. Boston Children's sent me a rejection letter about 3 weeks ago.

Stoopid Haaaaaaaaah-vard. Apparently if ya don't do research ya don't even get to go look. Or something like that!

Not sure about the comment. I thought it was humble and legit. But tough to tell. I say we speak to the folks high up about getting sound effects for posts. 😀

yes! I'll take a nice BU-WA-HA-HA please.

I was not being rude ectopic, read what i wrote again, i was thanking the senior member for showing me the light. Sorry you got that from what i wrote.

I was being sincere, thanks for seeing that.

  I think there was also a cat's mer-row or something like that last week that could have used some volume behind it. I think I'll take a smilie that yells "YOU'RE A TOOL! YOU'RE A TOOL!" that can be used specifically when people post "I got a 290 on step 1 but only a 289 on step 2... do I have a chance in EM?"

OK, now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

🙂 Yeah, that's the only(?) problem with technology . . . there's not tone of voice, context, body language . . . how are the girls supposed to give "the look" to eachother here?
I think sometimes people misread my posts but it's inevitable sometimes. For instance I mentioned above that I know I'll take some hits this season for being a DO and then someone wrote later that I answered my own question. I didn't have a question, but any advice is advice worth reviewing. I really don't know what I would have done without all I've learned in this forum. I would really have screwed up just about everything!

I don't think there's really any reason to be nasty here. Aren't we all here to be friends and share advice after all? Corny but true!!
👍

Remember G'town is an olddddddddd school university. Even when I was interviewing here for a job, they said "We haven't had a DO here in 20 years." Even on my 3 month job eval, they mentioned the DO thing, so, they're just a little behind. Gimme some time to really infiltrate the system here and hopefully I'll change it.

For those interested, our only class, the class of... hmm, 2009, has all US MDs.

So is Duke, but we squeezed a few DO's and FMG's in until the top administration put the kibosh on it.

It's all in your administration. Have some forward-thinkers (like you) instead of stodgy types, and you can have a sea change.

Is that the way it normally goes? Do the old schools w/ a new EM residency fill there positions with the best available candidates, even if that means accepting DO's/ FMG's at first? Then, later, do they tend to reject the DO's/ FMG's applications once they have graduated a few classes? Thanks.
