Rocky Vista University (RVUCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I skimmed through the whole thread. Saw link to the SDN thread for RVU class of 2017. Couldn't find a Facebook page. Anyone interested in one?

Got my phone call this morning! We definitely need to get a FB group going for our class :highfive:

You will get a letter eventually, but first you lose portal access.
No, I didn't put my GPA in my PS... Either way, look over the interview feedback section, it might be helpful.

nothing to do with "for profit"-- they just needed accredidation which they now have.

Hi all! I am trying to decide b/t RVU and KCOM, please share why you are attending RV to help in my choice. Does RV have dedicated/funded rotations/residencies?

Hi, well I can tell you that I am getting a great education here. There are dedicated rotations at various core sites (northern CO, Denver area, Colorado springs, Pueblo, etc.
My best rotations so far have been Trauma Surgery in Denver, and Cardiology.

I chose RVU because it seemed like the best fit compared to other schools I was accepted into. It turns out that the fit seems even better than I thought it was.

Go with your gut feeling, and you'll be happy either way. I'm happy with my choice, and either way, you'll be happy with yours.

Glad to hear it! I've read lots of good comments on SDN about this school, and I am very interested in applying in the next cycle. Was the hospital you had a rotation at a Level I trauma center?

Can anyone weigh in on family life? I have a wife and kids...is this school family friendly or will they just be seen as a annoyance?

One student on your said they had cry rooms in the lecture halls. Sooo

RVUCOM is awesome and VERY family friendly. I have a small child and probably about 10 others in my class have kids (one even has grandkids). There are also some pregnant women. The lecture halls have nursing/family rooms, and the professors are understanding when it comes to issues that come up when you have kids. Some of the clubs put on family friendly community events like this year's fall festival that had bouncy castles, face painting, etc. I really appreciate the fact that RVU has a very open and friendly atmosphere amongst both students and faculty. Students with kids are definitely not seen as an annoyance here.

They are very family friendly for certain, the rooms are nice, although one student had his son with him and STILL got called on for an answer while up in the room... that was pretty funny... Anyway, we have the SAA whose entire purpose is to help other students and their family. We also have the RVU Wives club/group (husbands are welcome too), and they help each other out all the time, as do many students... The SAA brings birthday cakes each month, they have potlucks, and there is a special family-only (no students) dinner with the dean that is held every year... Additionally, Denver is a great area for families, it has tons of parks, trails, rec centers, etc for kids to play, it is very pet friendly, and we have the largest Ikea in the US which has free food for kids on Tuesdays, and a free play-center for kids who are potty-trained... I think if you have a family this is probably one of your best choices... Especially since we have federal loans now (YAY!!)

For those of you accepted/already in classes, where did you get your titers? I just moved to Denver and do not have a PCP yet. Thanks!

I just went to the RVU clinic, but I had insurance, if you don't, find a Denver health clinic, as they are CHCs and you will pay on a sliding scale...

is it too late to apply here?
how many seats are left?

You haven't filled out your secondary yet? What are your stats/ECs?

Out of curiosity, did you all take the two semester o-chem series or the one semester of o-chem (combined) along with one semester of biochem?

I took the year long series. I can only say that RVU heavily favors science classes... When they say "recommended" it means they are strongly encouraged...

When did RVU give you the first year calendar? Trying to plan a wedding for spring break time frame, but they haven't put out any dates yet....Thanks!

Spring didn't come out until ~October... and it is different for 1st yrs and 2nd yrs... I can say that this year for 1st yrs it is Mar 9-17th, but I can't even come close to promising the same for next years class... I am not sure when the 2nd yrs have theirs, I think it is the week after... Is it your wedding or one you're hoping to attend?

It will be mine, guess I'll have to get a couple of weekends lined up around that time, thanks tho!

They will give you some flexibility for your own wedding, but not a whole lot...

Good to know 🙂 hahah, thanks!!

Word of advice from someone not in medical school but just got married in grad school, it's possible but tough to do and feels like a whirlwind. My wife and I won't have time for our honeymoon until around our first anniversary.

Winter break will invariably contain Christmas and New Years, so the dates are a little more reliable... and it is a semester break... It may be easier to work around...

Do you guys RVU students recommend bringing a car while studying at RVU for 1st 2 years? is there any large network of public transportation in Parker city. I'm pretty sure Denver has rail/buses services system, but not sure about Parker city.

Not a current student, but I lived in that area and I would want a vehicle.

There is no bus service to the school. There is limited mass transit in the area, and there is enough parking to go around, this is a medical school, not an undergrad university... You need a car

I have the secondary and stats are 3.2/3.5/26. Is it too late?

Also can RVU students obtain loans easily?

Loans are Title IV and now failry easy. In terms of application, you might be late. I'd call the admission office at the school, and they can let you know.

You are late. You can try, but I am not sure how it will work out... I know people who have been accepted with those stats, but they applied right away

and as was said, yes, you get federal loans at RVU, it took less than 2 weeks for my stuff to be done...

Just got the call-- accepted! Congrats to anyone else who has (or will) gotten the call today.

Withdrawing my acceptance. Good luck and I hope one of you guys gets it.

Hi Everyone!

Just got offered an interview yesterday! From anyone who has gone through the interview process, has been accepted, or attends RVU, any advice??? I am really nervous and this is my top osteopathic school so any recommendations would be appreciated. Good luck to everyone else applying!

Interviewed and accepted earlier this month. It's a pretty nice interview day. Dr. Dubin is a cool guy. Some people had interviews that were only 20 min and some had over an hour. I thought it was a little less relaxed than they advertise, but I wouldn't sweat it. The only thing I didn't like was that you spend a lot of time just sitting there twiddling your thumbs while everyone interviews. Lots of current students stop by to talk though.

Interviewed 1/25, accepted today! So happy!

The whole day was very low-stress. I know it's difficult, but try to breathe deeply and enjoy it.

Congrats on everyone getting accepted. We have a Facebook page for the class of 2017. Come join and introduce yourself!!

Accepted back in December. Most likely going to attend. Can any current students out there recommend specific apartment complexes that are nice or where a lot of students tend to live? Thanks!

Broadstone Cornerstar, and Cherrywood/Ranchstone... Those are both very popular, I lived in Broadstone for awhile, and for an apartment it's decent... There will also be roommate options, and houses that will be for rent...

Hey guys!

I had an interview scheduled for today... BUT I had it written down on the wrong day in my calendar. Comoletely stupid, I know.

What do you think my chances are of getting in after such a dumb move? I spoke with Cassidy and she told my to reschedule. I am really interested in the school, but I dont want ot waste time traveling if I ruined my chances

I think you will be ok. When I was there you could tell they where genuine and understanding. I would still interview, things happen and they know that. Besides they didn't offer you an interview just to turn you down because your human, and we all make mistakes.
