Rocky Vista University (RVUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
maybe I'm too dumb to work the RVU website or I'm not paying attention, but I can't find any links on there about their Rural/ Wilderness Medicine or Military Medicine tracks. They sound awesome (based on what I hear on SDN). They better not have gotten rid of them or anything, I want to use those cut suits! 😀

Anyone else not able to get to the applicant page of the portal? I have tried to view it the past couple days and it has been down every time. Maybe they are updating status' on it? Wishful thinking?

If you click on the applicant tab, it says that it is down for maintenance.

My understanding is the cut suit is currently only for military track use. So if you plan on doing HPSP, you can use it. Also, the R/W track for the class of 2016 had ~40+ applicants for 15 spots.

Sorry to hear that guys. I didn't get an email, so I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing?

They are trying to fix some issues with myvista, which is the program the portal uses (we use it for our classes as well) and that is probably why the portal is down. They are working on it, I am sure it won't be down long!

It is a lottery on where you end up. There are 160 students and there are spaces for most of them in CO, but there are a handful elsewhere. Apparently this year there were people who didn't even get their top 3 picks, so it is a crap shoot, and it is randomly selected by the computer. If you want to do your rotations somewhere else, and are willing/able to set them all up in another location, you are welcome to do so. If you want to do them all in the area you are assigned, you can do that, if you want a combination, you can do that as long as YOU do the leg work on the ones out of your area. The spots are: Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Greeley, Ft. Collins, Grand Junction, Utah, Wyoming, and there could be other small ones I'm missing... I think we may have some in Castle Rock (not positive on that one) You can try to trade if you don't get one of your top choices, or you could work really hard and set them all up in the area of your choice. A girl I know set all of hers up for Michigan, so it's really up to you...

As for the stats, yeah, sorry haters, the 2017 class is our highest scoring class so far... You can not like it, but it doesn't surprise me, just because the owners father set up a school in the carib and RVU is for profit, doesn't mean we're a POS school. According to the faculty that go to national medical curriculum meetings we have one of the toughest curriculum models in the nation. So haters gonna hate, but at least know your facts before you try to bash us...

Do you know where the Wyoming rotations are? My dad is from Wyoming and so I have a lot of family there!

I wonder if the portal being down has anything to do with no ii going out. It seems like last year ii started around the last week of .

Are all these rejections pre or post secondary? Seems like some pretty qualified applicants not getting much love here?

That's a bit scary regarding the rejections with those stats. When did everyone submit secondaries?

I checked my portal and it just says complete and I haven't received an email from them so I assume I'm still alive. 4.0s 3.97c 30 MCAT.

Can anyone offer any insight to the interview day at RVUCOM interview format etc.?

Post secondary. What's funny is that I can log into the portal and bring up the interview dates and whatnot even though it says, "Our records show you are no longer a prospective applicant", lol

FWIW, there are six dates 9/10, 9/11, 9/12, 10/8, 10/9, and 10/10. Each date has twelve openings and there is only one spot filled (on 9/10)

Good luck everyone! I really wanted a shot here.

Hm. My file was marked complete on 8/1. No rejection yet. 3.26c, 3.25s, 34M. ECs are very pedestrian. Maybe it's an MCAT thing?

Thats crazy I dont see anything listed.

I know that RVU is VERY science heavy. We have some majors from other backgrounds, but far and away it is science heavy candidates... Like a friend of mine applied for the same cycle as me, and she was wait-listed and they said they wanted her to retake biochem, and add some additional courses because they didn't believe her school was rigorous enough in science... I am not sure what any of your backgrounds are... Also, they are really big on your secondary essays and why DO and why CO. So if you winged them, they probably noticed. Best of luck to those of you they're still considering, and best of luck at your other places for those of you who have been rejected...

I think last year some people talked about not having enough upper level Bio courses.

Check your portals everyone. I checked mine and had an ii waiting. Scheduled for 9/10

Yep, I think it said an email should be sent within 3 days. I did get a confirmation after I scheduled though

Willing to bet buckeye is from Ohio though and got an interview.

Submitted my secondary today. If I wasted $50, so be it. I tossed and turned about submitting, but I figured I selected them and paid the aacomas fee for a reason, so I didn't want to reflect later and wonder "what if" so I hit submit 👍

I will update if I get a post secondary rejection in a couple weeks or any other status updates.

Just received an II by email! 3.8/28, IS

Ohio res but have family in colorado and wyoming. Also stressed that I want to practic3 in mountain west.

ii set for Oct 8th! 3.55/3.37 31M from Utah

There is some regional bias, but it isn't super strong. The most students are definitely from CO, but after that it is MN, CA, & TX (for my class in that order, not sure about others). So don't assume that you did or didn't get in because of that. As I said one of our 3rd years just set up rotations in MI, and has no plans on returning...

Also, in my interview confirmation email it says that they typically accept 80% of the people they interview!

How the hell do they want you to indicate their phone numbers and the courses the taught us in when they don't provide fields for that information???

👎thumbdown👎

State school got back to me! Hope to see some SDNers 9/12!

where on the portal did you see the message and when were you marked complete jw? Is it on the page that lists all the checkmarks and letters and such?

Yeah, should be on the applicant tab

I am working on the secondary and am trying to fix some of my essays. I am worried to submit it now because some of you had good numbers and did not get an interview. I have a 26 MCAT and a 3.99 GPA. I am hoping the fact that I I managed that gpa along with being a division 1 athlete will help me out but who knows what these schools are looking for. Congrats to all who received an interview!

Your MCAT may be a point or two lower than their average but your gpa is phenomenal especially considering your other activities. Make sure you sell your perseverance, determination, and focus which it seems you have in spades. Never hurts to their out a line. Good luck to ya!

Basically same stats, except I have other big ECs that set me apart. OOS. Hopefully we get some luv.. :naughty:

Remember, for every 28 average, there was a 30 and a 26 to make it... 🙂
