My school just sent me a form to check my size for scrubs. The problem is, I need the waist measurement of the S but an inseam longer than the one that comes with the 3XL! (I'm 5'10" and get a 35" inseam for jeans.) Do I fit my waist and show off six inches of ankle, or get a larger, longer size and pray the drawstring stays? What's a tall gal to do?

Dictate the size based on the length, not the waist. The waist is a drawstring, so it won't be too big. But, I don't understand how at 5'10" you have a 35" inseam, unless you have no abdomen. I am 6'3" and have a 34" inseam. I wear size XL srubs, and they fit just fine.

there was a pretty funny thread about this a year ago, but I'm not sure how you'd find it. Scrubs were made to fit short, fat people, and a lot of us tall, thin people have a hard time finding a size that fits well. To make matters worse, the proportions really seem to differ widely from hospital to hospital. At the University hospital where I went to med school, you had to get your scrubs out of a vending machine in shirt-pant combinations, and of course, the combinations they chose to make available didn't accommodate my long legs and marfanoid chest. I always had to get 2 sets and pitch two halves. Right now I'm using medium tops and XL or 2X pants, depending. When I use the 2X, I've got a serious amount of fabric bunched around my waist, but when you're wearing a white coat, you can just shuffle the extra around to the back. I'm starting residency soon and I'm hopeful the univ of chicago has good scrubs, cuz 4 years is a long time to look like a dork. Anyway...

hey wiggy! shout out to my girl! 😛 😀

I had the same problem last year when I was getting fitted for pants at the doctor's office I worked at because I'm 6'4" and thin. I ended up getting a XXL pant with a 40" waist just so I could get the longest pant they had and it ended up being 3-4" short. Point being I didn't mind too much that the pants were a large waist but the fact that they were still short pissed me off cuz I looked like I was going to go wading after work. So, definately just get the longer ones and use the drawstring like stated before.

Also, like ddmoore said, at 6'4" my inseem is about 35/36 and my legs are really long. So I can't beleive that your a 34", I would definately re-measure if I were you.

Wends!! Hey chica! 😛

Well, I can get by okay with a 34", but anything less than that and it's hello ankles. I'm not super-short-waisted, I'm just female, and our legs tend to be longer than you guys'. I can't believe I'm getting more doubters over my inseam than my MCAT score!

So the longest I can get is a 32" and that comes with a 50" (!) waistband. I think I'm going to call the person whose name was on the scrubs letter on Monday. Plan B, since I can't make myself shorter, is to gorge on ice cream for the rest of the summer. Thanks for responding. 🙂

omg wiggy gorging sounds fun lol 🙂 I have a pair of scrubs I got just to lounge in during undergrad from walmart and its size small and I'm absolutely SWIMMING in it...its SO huge...I def hope the ones at my med school are more on my scale 😉

One thing for girls to keep in mind when thinking about scrubs inseams is that the crotch is generally really really huge. If I tie mine where I usually wear my pants (1 inch below belly button), the crotch is about halfway to my knees. That makes my size small scrubs drag on the floor, even in danskos. But if I pulled the waist up to my armpits, which I could, these would be too short, and I'm sure the measured inseam is a lot shorter than my jeans (32").

I have an ex-girlfriend with the same measurements (she was all legs). She wore XLs to 2XLs for the length and just dealt with the extra fabric; they aren't all that sexy to begin with so you should be ok.

wiggy... i'm a girl and i'm 5'8"-5'9" with at least a 34" inseam. (the guy that told you to check again has not paid attention to real womens' measurements... or at least sizes, let alone tried shopping for pants!!!) i am also 132 lbs, just about all muscle. i wear a medium scrub top and i tend to wear large bottoms. i find it to be compfortable when i wear them like regular pants (sagging on my hips). that way, the drawstring accomodates by scrunching some material, the crotch sags a bit (comfortably), and they tend to fall at about the tops of my shoes. XL could work in a pinch, but it seems to not provide any added benefit once you start wearing 'em below your natural waistline anyway. AND, wearing the large slouched down on the hips gives a kind of sexy, baggy pant look that really, ummm... drapes your curves if you know what i mean. i love wearing mine with a tank top, it's actually pretty hot!

and no gorging on ice cream.... unless maybe it's cherry codial with chocolate swirls. man am i a sucker for that. 🙂 🙂

Oh my!

maybe if you're really, REALLY nice!

Since we are on the topic of sizes, I was wondering if any ladies can help me decide on what size to order for my white coat. According to the measurements given, it seems as if I fit an XS (5' 2", 110 lbs), but is it true that we should order an extra size up? However, I don't want my white coat to be too big and make me look smaller than I am, but I don't want my coat to be too small either. Please help. Here are some measurements (in inches) between an XS vs. S:
bust 40.75, 42.75
sleeve 22.75, 23.25
waist 38, 40
length 27.25, 27.75

Our coats are getting embroidered with our names so we only have one chance to find the right fit. Thanks so much.

I'm 5'2" and 110 lbs as well, and I'd probably buy an extra small. Those measurements seem to be big enough so if you gain a little weight in med school, you won't feel like a sausage in your coat. It'd be nice if you lived near some upperclassmen and could try on one of their white coats.

I'd do a Google on "tall women's scrubs". I found a website where I got 36" inseam scrubs that fit great, made by Mobb. I bought a small but they are still long enough to fit my legs. They are out there!

My sympathies for the white coat problems too. I'm in the opposite boat, I'm 6'1", so it was tough. I ended up ordering a men's tall medium. Let's hope it works!

my school's white coats go by dress sizes. i tried one on at the school and ended up getting one a size bigger than my normal dress size. i don't know if that helps or not...good luck

Peaches are supposed to be plump. If you try gaining 30 pounds, at 5'2 you would be perfect for a medium!

The biggest thing for the women (including me) in my class was shoulder room. If you are in a colder climate where you might wear sweaters underneath your coat, OR if you have broad shoulders for your height, order a size up!

You don't want to reach over a patient while wearing your white coat and hear it tear (and then need a new one) or be "restricted" in movement by your coat!

Any specific brand recommends for form fitting scrubs on a 5’7” 110 lb frame? Im tired of looking like a potato sack! Some girls in my class are my size and so stylish, I know its possible somehow!

Necrobump aside, if you know people your size who have scrubs that fit, why don't you ask them? "Hey Sally, I love your scrubs! I'm shopping around for scrubs too. Where did you buy them?"

They make talls/longer length if that’s what you need. Go to a scrub store in town and try some on. If you want fitted and soft, Grey’s Anatomy are probably what you are seeing. Or Med Couture, something like that. Most stores can order something if they don’t stock it.
