Hey ya'll, is anyone investing in a new computer/tablet for vet school?
I have a four year old HP surface pro but I'm considering purchasing an iPad since I heard it's the most user friendly with a lot of the programs we'd need to download for classes and exams

I too am needing a new laptop or tablet and dont know what to get... I'm leaning towards some kind of Surface Pro but I'm not sure. I've always just had a standard laptop, it's pretty old TBH lol I tend to favor Windows over Mac. How did you like your Surface Pro?

Did anyone’s housing portal open yet? It still says mine is unavailable

I just bought myself a new Microsoft surface pro 13” laptop and absolutely LOVE IT! Before I had a Samsung 15” that was so clunky and heavy for 8 years I’m so glad I made the purchase!!!

Hi all. Question re SGU. Krista said I would receive my determination today. The day has come and gone and I am on pins and needles. Should I email her? What do you guys think? Thanks

Yea shoot her an email. Most people I know had the same thing happen. She’ll give you an updated day or let you know the decision.

What do students wear to class? Clearing out my closet so I’m trying to decide what to keep! At my undergrad most people wore comfy clothes/work out clothes. Is this the same or do people wear scrubs or nice clothes?

I was talking to someone I know who went there and she said most people wear comfy clothes, sweaters and even bring blankets to class because it can be cold in the lecture halls. For labs depending on the lab it will be scrubs or a lab coat with regular clothes under.

I sent in my deposit Thursday for the VFP Fall 2019!!! I can’t wait to meet you guys!!!

I am wondering if someone can help. I was accepted for January 2020 but into the AEP program for support. Does this mean I pay more tuition or need additional schooling? Thanks so much!

On the housing portal, how did you all put little bios about yourselves? I see the sliding rank part but I don’t see anything that lets me describe my living habits and whatnot. Where can I find this?

It was on the same page as where you check off to be included in the roommate search, then below that is a spot for “SGU username”, then below that it’ll say “description”. That’s where you write your bio.

Does anyone know how well T-Mobile works on the island? I currently have the international plan and trying to decide if I should keep it or do something else

I am currently in my first term and in the AEP program! All it means is that the admissions committee decided that you would benefit from having extra guided study sessions. You are required to go to a small closed group study session lead by an upper term student once a week. The sessions are usually anatomy or physiology and you have to pick the one you think you would need help in the most. You are also required to go to one open study DES session every week and those are of any of your other classes that other upper term students are able to help facilitate. DES sessions are just like the AEP sessions, but are open to all students. There's no extra cost or school time, just extra study help that you are required to go to. I find them very helpful. If you have any other questions feel free to ask

I don't personally have T-Mobile, but have heard from my classmates that it works fine. If something happens and it doesn't work there is always the option of wifi and using facebook or whatsapp to contact people as well.

Oof must have missed that part! Thank you!

Can anyone give me some information on the Hill's Program please? Starting in January 2020. Thanks!

Hey there,

I’m not at SGU, but also at a Caribbean school (Ross). Our Hills student rep posted in our class Facebook group and gave us a link to enroll in the program. We had to order by a certain date and then it’s shipped to the island during the semester. I would imagine it would be the same for SGU. If you have a class page or a SGU student page I would and ask for your student rep’s info. Congrats on getting into SGU!! 🙂

Hi! Me too! I imagine it depends on where you are on the waitlist. I’m pretty far down and decided to enroll in January. Good luck

I am accepted for the January 2020 start date and waitlisted for the fall 2019 start. Does anybody have any ideas on how much the waitlist might move between now and the end of July? I know it can vary, but figured I'd ask anyway. I am super excited to start regardless, but some major life events have made an earlier time frame much more manageable. Thanks!
Sometimes it moves quite a bit, but depends on how many people decline their spot. I know some people who were pulled off the waitlist around 3 weeks before the start of classes

For all those attending this August, does anyone have a picture or a copy of the deadlines/dates to submit paperwork things? I see the checklist but was there another piece of paper that had dates we had to submit the items on the checklist by? Thank you in advance!

Any backpack suggestions?
One that is big enough to fit all the things you will need for the day. You will be in a lecture hall for 4 hours straight most days with 10 minute breaks in between, so make sure you have room for your computer, notes, snacks, and warm clothing.

Is there a Facebook page for VFP entering 2019 class?

Any backpack suggestions?

I used Dakine backpacks in undergrad and the “Prom” model was my go to for vet school. It’s really great because it holds a ton, has a laptop pocket, cushioned sunglass pocket, side water bottle holder, and an insulated cooler compartment on the front. The patterns are really pretty (they switch them up seasonally) and they’re super durable packs, highly recommend them!

Imma second a dakine backpack. I think mine is an older version of the Jewel. Used the same backpack in all of undergrad and it’s still in amazing condition. And this is from someone who needed a new backpack 1-2 times a school year in high school because of how much wear they got.

I bought an LL Bean "Turbo Transit" backpack in 2002 -- got the custom embroidery with my name too -- and used it a ton for school and all travel/airplanes etc. Good condition still. It's dated though... no laptop pouch or phone pouch, sunglasses, etc., but they've updated their models.

It's one of their massive models and has a collapsible compartment in the bottom that can hold a sweatshirt or shoes or blanket.

Edit: It is their largest model and they've definitely added all the modern stuff like a laptop sleeve.

Not an SGU student but I have strong feelings on backpacks so I’m going to share.

If you already have any periodic back pain at all, plan on walking to school,or will do a fair bit of walking around campus then you should consider getting a backpack with back support. I used to think those were too expensive and for old people with back problems, but in undergrad I walked 30 minutes to and from class every day using a regular Jansport backpack and I still have some issues with one of my shoulders 2 years later. I have a north face backpack and the difference to me is huge. I think all of the north face backpacks have back support. I know they are expensive but I believe there are other alternatives that work just as well and are less pricy like the Swiss gear brand.

Any specific type you suggest? Definitely want one that will help with back pain

I got one of those in high school and it didn’t even last me the entire school year 🙁

Hey everyone I just turned down my January seat / aug. waitlist (#7) to go to another vet school. Hopefully someone gets to take it!! Enjoy the experience!

Any events for family weekend that are recommended to sign up for?

Does anyone from upper classes know how much their family spent to come down to Grenada for family weekend plus housing + food + etc? I’m trying to make the best decision but also trying to save my parents some money!

The price depends on where they plan on staying. Some resorts are more expensive than others and include different things. I would recommend having them look into the Radisson or somewhere along Grand Anse beach because they are usually decently priced and they are more accessible to visiting them without needing to get a taxi. Then food just depends on if it's included at the place or if you have to go out to eat for meals. There are some reasonably priced places as well as more expensive places to eat all mixed around the Grand Anse area.

Thank you for that response! Actually, I do. Can you give me a general idea of how much content you are responsible to master in a given time period? For example, how much anatomy are you tested on in how much time? Weekly? Bimonthly? Thanks so much! I will be attending beginning January 2020.

No problem! I'm not going to lie, you are thrown a ton of information from each class at you all at once. You start taking quizzes for your core classes around 2-3 weeks after starting and they happen once every week for 3 weeks. Then you have a week before midterms and after that around 2-3 weeks later you do round 2 of quizzes in the same way. Then you will have finals like a week later. It's easy to get behind in learning material, so you have to try your best to keep up with it and have a study plan. In the first half of the semester all classes are teaching different material and then after midterms most of the classes overlap with the material of what we are learning. As for anatomy you also have a lab portion and will be tested on identifying parts of cadavers that they pin or answering a question about what they pin for your midterm and final(it is cumulative).

Do all term 1 dvm students live in the same hall if they’re living on campus and not in married housing?

No, you get placed wherever they have room. It's a mix of med and vet students in every dorm, but you'll usually have some vet students in each building around campus. A lot of my class this last term was in the same building, but it may vary depending on amount of med students since they require more dorms for every incoming class.

Does anyone from last year or previous years have a copy of their schedule or classes? I’m trying to get an idea of when midterms are. Thank you so much!

Midterms are usually 2 months into the term. For term 1 starting in august this year midterms start on october 7th and are done on the following Monday.

Thank you so much for the info! Do you know if people in your class were able to take their midterms earlier? Do you have one midterm a day usually?

Oh haha didn’t see we’ll be in the same class! How did you know that midterms will start then?

Also for people in previous years were you able to take midterms earlier if you needed to? And is it a midterm/day?

I started in January this year and the schedules for all terms are up on the Carenage. I'm not sure if they allow you to take them sooner or not. I know for anatomy you take a practical and I don't think that can be rescheduled. You usually have one midterm a day except for anatomy where you have lecture and lab practical on the same day.

Does anyone know the grade cutoff for prerequisite courses? I can’t seem to find that information online or in my conditional acceptance package. I know it’s a C for most vet schools.
