Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Thread

I can't wait to watch the opening ceremonies! This isn't necessarily sports related, but I'm a ballroom dancer and just found out there's going to be a bunch of dancesport dancers in the opening ceremony (basically all russians are amazing at ballroom), so looking forward to that!

Sounds awesome! I can't wait! :zip:

If you look up the twitter account @SochiProblems you'll find some interesting accounts about what the journalists are going through in Sochi. Some of what it has to say can be pretty funny.

remember when i said i wasnt sure how much of the olympics i would get to watch on tv because of vet school? well, it turns out the answer to that is 0. not because vet school is too time consuming (where theres a will theres a way to procrastinate!) but because apparently Grenada networks dont get coverage. 🙁

You guys who watched the opening ceremony will have to share all the juicy details on here for those of us without access 🙁. Sadly, I don't have cable. Or an antennae. Which most of the time is a godsend, because it's bad enough for my procrastination tendencies having access to my parents' netflix account. But NBC never puts more than a few clips of the opening ceremonies online. Which is sad.

Maybe I'm just weird, but when they introduce Olympians that are representing a country because their great-grandfather lived there or they did charitable work in that country, I go :eyebrow:

There's no way I'd compete in the Olympics under anything other than the American flag. /patriotism

I agree with you Chillbo. Sure if you were born and lived in your home country for at least a bit, go for it, but otherwise it seems a bit lame to not represent the country you properly grew up in for reasons like the ones you mentioned. MURRICA.

Anyone know what song was playing when the Russians were introduced? I strangely want it on my ipod.

Not really Olympic level but apparently one of the horses I own was surrounded in controversy because her owner moved from France to another country solely to compete for that country in the World Games. He was basically scouted and they made it easy for him to get citizenship and some other fun privileges to make life easier. That was kind of a fun factoid to find out.
That being said, I was born and raised in Australia, so I'd compete for them despite having lived in the U.S. for 13 years 🙂

Loved the ice horses dancing across the sky and the ship.

And Chillbo, I agree completely. One guy and his wife got citizenship in some country because of their charitable work. :eyebrow: Sounds like money to me.

Bring on the flame! :flame:

Oh and FYI (you guys probably already known his but...)....you can check out all the Sochi events on TV here.

USA hockey (women) kicks off at 3am

There's a couple of girls who are alum of the same elite youth hockey program I played for as a kid on the US team so break out the speed, it's gonna be a long night!!

I can understand if their home country doesn't have winter sports or whatever particular sport they play. But there are some Americans on the Canadian hockey team and I'm just like: :annoyed:

I love me some Shaun White but I admit that the snipes by other teams about him withdrawing because he doesn't think he can win may hold a bit of merit...Seems like half the athletes say it's really challenging and borderline unsafe while the other half seem to think it's tough but fair. Shaun White never really seemed like the kind of guy to say, "Not doin' it, too scary!" but then again his injuries are adding up and concerns for his own safety (and ability to defend his half-pipe titles) are legit.
Spoiler alter: Shaun white who?

Only have the basic, free, cable and I so I can't watch online and only the things that come on NBC main channel.

Can't find any events on today. I'm so sad.

The reason I am not a huge fan of Ice Skating anymore....how could Japan beat the US in the women's individual part of the team skate when she FELL and got no credit for that jump?

I'm sure there's a way with the new points, but a fall should be a HUGE deduction in my mind. Kind of like a stop or refusal during eventing on xc. You should not be able to place above a clean routine if you fall.

But that is of course just my opinion.

Also NBC stop replaying the same stuff over and over again on different channels. I do not care that Maria Sharapova grew up in Sochi and liked clowns at the circus. 🙄

I can tell this is gonna be an issue. I have a feeling that all the figure skating I'm watching right now is the same figure skating listed in the program info for the primetime Olympic show later...

I know..and there are so few clean skates. I will not be watching this again later.

^^^^ haven't seen that yet.

Highly inspired by the 40 biathlon skier...it's pretty amazing to be at your peak for so many years.

Sorry. I should probably refrain from posting on this thread then. I'm not sure how far behind the American coverage is. CBC is showing most things live, with repeats later on when the country is actually awake.

No worries. 🙂 Just hate that they keep replaying the same stuff. I'm sure they are saving it for Primtime.🙄

10k sprint where you shoot guns at intervals.. oh and it's all cross country skiing. sure, sign me up. GOOD LORD.

I called that last night. Mr. Philliab was like...someone is going to lose their job over that. My response: someone is going to lose their head.

I hope it's not true, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised. 🙁

Yeah, that's the sad part. Even if the article isn't real like Chilbo said...I was honestly not surprised to see the title. It's awful.

Did anyone else see the bit about 10 people being injured during the men's training runs on the ski slopes? I'm no longer questioning Shaun White's decision to back out of the slopestyle event.

A Canadian half-pipe skier died in training 2 years ago. Half-pipe skiing is making its Olympic debut this year and a few athletes have worn stickers to honour the athlete that died in training since the tragedy. Except that it has been banned by the IOC as it is viewed as a 'political statement'.

What a load of bull****.

I'm not going to let this kind of stuff ruin the Olympics, especially with some of the stories that have come back about Sochi, but this made me really sad. When honouring a fallen athlete, one that was a big part in getting half-pipe skiing to the Olympics, becomes a political statement....PC bullcrap has been taken too far.

I'm seriously disappointed.

Meanwhile, the Russians are making some intriguing beer....

How is honoring a dead Olympian "too political" but Germany wearing rainbow colors in the opening ceremonies to support gay rights and Estonia wearing black to represent oppression isn't? It's a massive international event. OF COURSE it's going to get political, especially in a country with policies as questionable as Russia's.
