Well since some acceptances have been given out and people seem to be anxious to post about it, I'll get this thing going with the proper format.

Follow the previous threads to keep the format consistent and classy.

One from the Dean of the Honors college

Personal Statement:
Trying to keep this concise. Started with how unmotivated I was in high school and then told a brief story about when I first got my dog giving up my own comforts. Moved onto when I was working instead of going to college and when my boss asked me if I ever considered vet med I realized I had previously set barriers for myself (specifically not being able to handle animals dying) that I no longer had (what I learned from caring for my dog). Said what I did to explore/understand vet med and included some detailed experiences I had in the field and what I learned from the vets to show that I understand some of the ups and downs of the field (ex. working in shelter med). I referenced how important the relationship between vets and and humans are (ex. vet and owners working on rehabilitation of the pet). Also mentioned that I pushed myself to see more than companion animals despite my dog influencing me and talked about the research I am part of and basically how I feel very fulfilled working with other animals as well. Last note was about how joining college and pursuing vet med changed my life by motivating me and making me passionate for the first time.

I recommend going to professors to edit I had my pre-medical advisor read and edit for straight content and my honors english professor helped edit for word choice and story flow which I think was a smart decision. Although I don't have a ton of experience in terms of diversity and hours I think my personal statement really helped highlight what I do have.

This is going to seem really personal. My goal isn't to expose myself to a bunch of anonymous people on the Internet, but to hopefully encourage anyone in a similar situation to try their hardest and go for it. I am a 29 year old male, NY resident, first time applicant. I am what I consider a super non-traditional student. Most non-trad student that I've read about or talked to have bachelor's and some even graduate degrees in other disciplines or have been working in professional settings and go back and do their prereqs and get experience and apply to schools. This is not a knock on them, I have just had a very different path. I had drug and alcohol abuse problems from age 14-24. I did not attend college right out of high school. In my early 20's I alternated between taking some college courses and working blue collar jobs. I had 2 very bad semesters, one in which I stopped attending classes and ended with all F's or incompletes. I ended up turning my life around, going to college full time, seeking out work in the veterinary field, and ultimately applying to vet schools. I applied to 17 schools because i was so convinced that no one would want to take a chance on me. I'm living proof that people can achieve great things when given a second chance. Without getting too corny, it's never too late to start becoming the person you want to be.

Associate vet at my job
Medical director/dvm of my internship

Personal Statement:
Wrote about how I was an unhappy, unmotivated kid and started abusing drugs and alcohol. During a real rough patch in my life I got sober and realized I wanted to do something meaningful with my life. A couple of years later after losing all of my possessions during hurricane sandy I had to basically restart my life. I took this opportunity to pursue a childhood dream of becoming a vet. I quit my job and returned to college and sought out a job at an animal hospital. I fell in love with the field and realized this was definitely what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and haven't looked back since.

Personal Statement:

I wrote about how my diverse experiences as a non-traditional student only strengthened my desire to become a vet by telling three short stories. I wrote one paragraph working with a live monkey during an Army CBRNE exercise and how this developed my interest in zoo medicine. I wrote another paragraph about prepping blood for a patient during an emergency transfusion, and how the skill required to manage the situation are also applicable to vet medicine. I also wrote about an experience with a suffering wild bird, and how this shaped my views about euthanasia and quality of life.

I was going to wait until I've heard back from everywhere I applied until posting in this thread, but I'm too impatient! I'm a third-time applicant, and this is going to be one of those "even if you don't have a perfect application, you can still get accepted!" type of posts, which I definitely appreciated reading the past couple years. Anyway, about me:

23-year-old female, Missouri resident

First attempt (c/o 2018):
Applied: Mizzou, OK State, Purdue
Interviewed: Mizzou
Rejected: Mizzou, OK State (due to a pre-req issue that I overlooked), Purdue
That cycle I applied with only ~250 vet experience hours, and hadn't yet passed organic II (more on that later...). In retrospect I really had no chance getting accepted anywhere that year, but it was good experience being able to familiarize myself with the application process!

Second attempt (c/o 2019):
Applied:
Mizzou, OK State, Purdue, Florida, Illinois
Interviewed: Mizzou, Illinois
Waitlisted: Illinois (they either accept or waitlist everyone they interview)
Rejected: Mizzou, OK State (due to a different pre-req issue they didn't tell me about the first time, and which was not clearly explained on their website :sour:), Purdue, Florida

Third attempt (c/o 2020):
Applied
: Mizzou, Illinois, Kansas State, SGU, Midwestern
Interviewed: Kansas State
Declined interview: SGU (I had an interview scheduled, but cancelled it after getting accepted to K-State)
Interview waitlist: Midwestern (I also withdrew my application there after getting accepted to K-State)
Rejected: Mizzou, Illinois. Long story short one of my evaluators was trying to submit his letter on the night of the VMCAS deadline, but there was a glitch with the website and he couldn't submit. Every school I applied to was willing to work with me and have him email them the letter, except for Mizzou, my IS. :cryi: They don't accept late LORs under any circumstances. I'm still a little bummed, especially to miss out on IS tuition, but there's nothing I can do about it now. I haven't yet received an official rejection from them (they don't send interview invites for IS-ers until early February), but Kathy in the admissions office told me this would disqualify me back in September.

ETA: Turns out whoever I talked to in the Illinois admissions office last September was wrong, and they don't take late LORs either. I contacted them after I didn't receive an interview invite or rejection, and found out my app was never considered. I was annoyed at the time, but I really like K State so far, so all's well that ends well!
Accepted: Kansas State!!!

Degree: BS in Biology from Missouri State University, psychology minor, graduated May 2014.

Overall GPA: Well, it really depends on how you calculate it, because I had to take organic chem II five times. Yes, five. The first time I got a D (with the same professor I had for organic I -- I got a C in organic I, and he was just a terrible professor. His class average for organic II was around 50%, and he has since been fired), then an F (with a different professor who I just really didn't mesh with), then a D again (with a third professor who was actually decent. I was really close to a C that time), then another F (same professor I failed with the first time), and then finally a B (same professor I got the second D with). I do think a lot of my problem was that I didn't get a good foundation with organic due to the terrible first professor I had, but I didn't blame/mention the professor(s) anywhere on my application or in my interviews. I really should have applied myself better the second time if not the first -- gotten a tutor, gone to the professor for help, studied more/differently, etc. Seriously, don't do what I did. The other large part of my problem was that I had never struggled like this with a class before. I graduated high school with something like a 3.98, and I had a 4.0 my freshman year of undergrad, but then everything fell apart with organic. I was too embarrassed with how much I was struggling to seek help, but also overconfident considering I had taken the class before, so I underestimated how much I needed to study. I addressed this in my explanation statement on VMCAS my second and third attempts, and also put a positive spin on it -- I got a B in biochem, so I don't think I have trouble applying the concepts from organic in more advanced courses, almost all of my other grades are A's or B's, and the semester I finally got a B in organic II I was taking 19 credit hours, working, and holding two officer positions, so I seem to thrive when I have a lot on my plate. This did come up in my interviews (except for Illinois, which was closed file), and I kind of reiterated/rephrased the same things from my explanation statement. I've really learned from the whole mess and improved my study habits, and I'm not going to let anything like that happen again.

Anyway, my cumulative GPA is 3.70 if you only include my final attempt at organic II (FWIW that's the only class I've ever retaken), or 3.42 if you include all attempts.
Science GPA (based on my calculations, each school includes different courses): 3.50 or 3.07, again depending on if you include just latest attempt or all
Last 45 credits: 3.68 or 3.29

GRE: (Q/V/W): 159 (74%)/165 (95%)/5.5 (97%) (On my first attempt after only studying for around two weeks! I'm one of those weird people who's really good at standardized tests...)

Veterinary Experience:
~1800 hours at the time of my most recent application as a vet assistant at an SA clinic. We also see a lot of exotics (birds, rabbits, reptiles, pocket pets) and occasionally take in wildlife. I've still been working there about 20-25 hours a week since applying, but I'm too lazy to add up how many hours I have now. :p Around October they started training me as a receptionist as well, but obviously that didn't make it on my application, and I don't think I mentioned that in my K-State interview.
~230 hours shadowing and working at a different SA clinic for a couple summers.
~12 hours shadowing at a couple SA clinics in high school, just one-day experiences.

Animal Experience:
40 hour internship at my local zoo
32 hours volunteering at a local shelter
I took a horseback riding class in undergrad.

Research Experience:
None

Non-Animal Employment:
~900 hours at the time of application as a customer care rep in the call center for a well-known chain of outdoor retail stores. I started out on the phones, but I'm now in the email/chat department (I answer emails from and take live chats with customers). I'm also still working there about 20 hours a week. It kinda sucks, but it pays the bills, and schools seemed to like my customer service experience.
~100 hours as a phone survey caller for the sociology department in undergrad

Extracurriculars:
Morale committee member for my undergrad's Dance Marathon benefiting Children's Miracle Network
Phi Eta Sigma national honor society, member for a year and a half, co-induction chair my junior year, secretary my senior year
Tri-Beta biology honor society, member my freshman and sophomore years, event coordinator junior year, vice-president senior year
Pre-Vet Club member
I took dance lessons (ballet, jazz, and modern) 1st-12th grade, and I did competitions junior and senior year of high school.
I was also really involved in Thespians/drama in high school.
Latin Club member freshman and sophomore year of high school
Volunteered at a hospital for a couple summers in high school (specifically in the office of the outpatient surgery center, nothing too exciting)
Volunteered at my local library in high school for another couple summers

Awards/Honors:
One of several salutatorians from my high school graduating class. I was also a Distinguished Graduate (basically had a high GPA and took a lot of AP and other advanced classes) and Distinguished Service Graduate (completed over 200 service hours during HS).
Graduated cum laude from undergrad, and I was on the Dean's List for three semesters
I was a member of the Honors College in undergrad, and I had a scholarship covering my tuition.
I also listed my honor society memberships in this section.

LORs:

My undergrad advisor
My supervisor at my customer service job
The vet I worked with for a couple summers

Personal Statement:

Started out talking about my first cat we adopted when I was ten, and how he was attacked and killed by two neighbor dogs in December 2013. Tied this into my passion for client education, and also discussed my interest in surgery and a couple of the more interesting surgeries I've observed/assisted with. There's a bit more to it, but that's the gist.

Sorry for the long-winded post! I'm not sure what Kansas State saw in me, but I'm so excited, grateful and relieved to finally have an acceptance!

Personal Statement:
Started off with a personal story that I experience at the rehabilitation center that I interned at. Described how that was the first ever situation in which I was able to rewarded in the field of veterinary medicine. Went into talking about my research and how it made me understand the importance of the public health side to the veterinary profession. Then went into some experiences with learning from veterinarians, not just through clinical experiences but how I learned how a veterinarian needs to be in certain hard situations (ex. when they need the courage to make the decision to put down an animal.) Then talked about having a dream of also playing collegiate athletics alongside my dream of becoming a veterinarian. I explained how athletics has helped me become a stronger candidate and will help me in my future. I concluded with a simple paragraph.

I can't believe I am finally writing this post! It has sure been a long journey to get acceptance into a DVM program. Now the real work begins! I am somewhat of a non-traditional student. I entered community college at 18, but worked full-time and changed my major before transferring to a 4-year school, then graduated a year ago with no vet experience. I was very lucky to be invited to volunteer and then work in a small animal clinic with doctors who are extremely willing to teach me the ropes. Over the past year of working there I have learned so much and can't wait to continue learning it all in vet school!

Personal Statement:
I wrote about my education history. Basically, out of high school I was very lazy and had convinced myself to pursue an easy career that required little schooling. About a year into an American Sign Language program I realized I wouldn't be very fulfilled in a non-challenging career and decided to take some science classes. After doing well, I pursued vet med.

Personal Statement:
Discussed my enduring interest in science and nature (originally leaned towards paleontology and herpetology), how that molded me into someone who wanted to pursue a PhD, and how my hunger to more intimately understand the impact of animals on our moral and physical well-being drove me to pursue a career that would allow further development of field, clinical, and laboratory skills/knowledge (the culmination of which = vet med). Mentioned the diversity of settings and experiences that I've been exposed to, and how it's obvious yet under-appreciated that there are many functions in society that would benefit from the skill set of trained veterinary doctors. Stated that my ultimate goal is to pursue the study of disease in a capacity that allows me to respond to outbreaks (particularly when confronted with newly emerging zoonoses) and eventually contribute to development of scientific tools and policies that will enhance management and response.

Thanks for sharing this non-traditional path. Congrats on being accepted as well as finding purpose. Good luck to you!

Overall GPA: 3.71
Science GPA: ~3.6
Last 45: ~3.6

GRE (Q/V/W): 151/162/4.0

Degree:
B.S. Marine Science
A.S. Biological Sciences (Pre-veterinary)

Veterinary Experience
:
Small Animal- Kennel Tech, Vet Assistant, Vet Technician at SA practice, 1 year
Small Animal- Vet Technician at non-profit spay/neuter clinic, 4 years
Large Animal- We saw the occasional porcine and ruminant at the spay/neuter clinics or the vet practice, heck yes I put that down.

Animal Experience:
Shelter work ~ 9 years various non-profits –heavy leadership, organizational, and community service experience
Internship with NOAA – 10 weeks working with sea turtle care and also fish reproductive ecology
~4,000 hours of miscellaneous activities ranging from bird rehabilitation to zoo volunteering to a primate rescue facility visit- I listed every single one of the opportunities in which I worked with animals not under the supervision of a vet, it was exhausting to recall and list them all but they all played their part in shaping my professional goals today.

Research Experience:
Undergraduate Research – ~900 hours. Completed one project for an internship, one for senior thesis, assisted with anything I could get my hands on and listed research done as part of my classes. Orally presented several times at multiple conferences.

Non-Vet Employment Experience:
Teaching assistant during undergraduate – worked on boats and in the water, required CPR and First Aid cert. Provided instruction and leadership to students, required working knowledge of all basic coursework in the field and in labs.

Waitress, hostess, busser at several restaurants

Extracurricular Activities/Awards:
Dean's list several times –listed each one separately because they were not necessarily consecutive

Graduated Summa Cum laude for my A.S, Cum Laude for my B.S. –I listed each, yes they have my transcripts but why not make academic achievement glaringly obvious to the ad coms

Scholarships during undergraduate (6) –listed each and described why I received them (merit-based, future goals, etc), this application is no time to be humble!!

Top research presentation awards (2) – described the award and where I presented and the competition- provided context and meaning to the award

Recognition by my college for commitment to community service, involved an interview and publicity

Extras- scuba diving certification, soccer team for 4 years, etc. Briefly described some of the fun stuff I tried to squeeze in between classes

Volunteer/Non-vet Internship Experience:
Misc. volunteer activities with US Fish and Wildlife Service –included a 3 day symposium

5 years of misc. volunteering for multiple conservation related groups -tree planting, beach cleanups, environmental outreach, Earth Day, Ocean Day, school marine science dept. events, etc. I got involved in many volunteer opportunities in undergrad that were not necessarily directly related to vet medicine. I listed and detailed them all.

LORs:
I know that these were my strong points. I selected people that kn0w how passionate I am about animals, how hard-working I am, and how committed I have been to veterinary medicine in general.

1 from a veterinarian I assisted at spay/neuter clinics -known me 4 years
1 from a vet that owns the SA practice I work as a treatment tech at -known me 1 year and change
1 from my academic mentor in undergrad -known me 4 years
1 from my boss when I was a teaching assistant in undergrad –(she served as a non-animal work-related point of view) -known me 4 years
1 from the coordinator at non-profit animal sanctuary - (she has really seen my growth both in vet medicine and as a person) -known me 5 years

Personal Statement:
I focused on the future – my goals after veterinary school are very strong and clearly-defined, and that was reflected in my essay. I started with a soft paragraph about animals and the potential to help as a veterinarian, and then launched into the need that I plan to fulfill as a veterinarian within my community. I also discussed what I believe the responsibility of a veterinarian is, and I described when I fell in love with biology and just how much I was inspired by some incredible early instructors. I talked about why I was passionate about veterinary medicine. I really put my heart into the essay. I wasn’t worried so much about writing the perfect essay as I was worried that the ad coms would really see ME in what they read, so that they could make a true judgement about my admission. I promised myself that no matter what, the essay and my application as a whole would truly reflect who I was, and if it resulted in acceptance then great. If not, then I had only failed to present who I was to them accurately.

Those are the major ones

LORs:
1 from Veterinarian from Mixed Animal clinic who practiced Mixed medicine
1 from Virology professor during Grad school
1 from Biochemistry professor who I took biochem and immuno with, and taught the same class during grad school
1 from PI during Grad school, Professor of Neuroscience

Personal Statement:
Wrote about growing up on a vineyard, how my dad's work as a farm adviser influenced me to become involved with agriculture. That want combined with my love of medicine and animals helped me to decide to apply for vet school. Also delved into how my experiences in the clinic, the laboratory, and as a teacher during grad school has prepared me for all aspects of being a veterinarian, including the difficult process of attending vet school itself.

My recommendations for those applying again are: start making sure your pre-reqs align as EARLY as possible, double check, call the admissions all you can and figure it all out. Submit your applications early, I submitted in August and had no problems whatsoever with the VMCAS system like I know others did. Find a clinic to volunteer at during summer and just immerse yourself in it and see if its for you. For me it was the final confimation that this is what I'm meant to do. Also, keep in contact with the professors that you interacted with and liked, they are an amazing resource for letters and evaluations, on top of people to read your essay if need be.

It wasn't too spectacular, but it got my points across and gave enough information to have me stand out from other applicants while also not giving too much information, so that I knew what kind of interview questions to expect (like, "So you've played at Carnegie Hall, how exactly did you get those opportunities?" <- actual interview question lol).

Ugh that's too damn bad, stick around for an internship or something :p

I tried messaging you but you're too private to private message. Wanted to say congrats on getting in. And ALSO I think we met at the interview (almost 95% sure) and I'm almost 95% sure I'll be committing to Penn as well so we'll probably be classmates this fall!

My turn. For those of you out there with not even near perfect numbers, use me as a model. Veterinary School admissions aren't black and white- they're very subjective, and they can see how bad you want it, your dedication, and willingness to improve and learn. There'a reason the average GPA for every school is between a 3.4-3.6. One more piece of advice- VISIT schools!

This test is buttcheeks, but you can study for it even if you don't have the literary/latin/vocabulary background...but thankfully it didn't inhibit my success.

Degrees: *Soon to be B.S in Biological Sciences- University of Pittsburgh

Veterinary Experience:
Small Animal Primary Care/Integrative Practice- ~150+ hours
Small Animal Emergency and Specialty- 352 hours
Large Animal Surgery- ~300+ hours

Volunteer at a dog/cat shelter- 120+ hours
Wildlife center- 60+ hours
Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium Intern- 300 hours.

Research Experience:
A short but concise 72 hours of undergrad research. Investigated the therapeutic effects of two antioxidants on Caenorhabditis elegans (a microscopic worm) modeling Alzheimer's Disease. Found nothing significant but learned a lot!

Non Animal Employment:
My mom owns a candy business so I'm a seasonal candy maker (4+ years)
I worked for an independently owned carnival for several summers. Good times.

Extracurricular Activities / Awards:
Officer and active member for Tri-Beta on my campus and Science Club. Involved in track, cross country, art council, national honor society, all that jazz in high school.

Deans list basically every semester of undergrad, Tri-Beta membership, a certificate demonstrating I taught a kangaroo a behavior while at the zoo.

eLORS:
Organic chemistry professor,
Organic chemistry laboratory TA,
Equine surgeon,
Intern coordinator/my boss at the zoo

Personal Statement:
I had such a hard time with this, but a story has to come to mind that you want to tell your admissions audience that is veterinary related. You have to be over the top excited to tell this story. Draft it several times, and edit it, and it will come off the page/screen and show them who you are.

I started out with a summary of how I'd got to where I'm currently at in life then proceeded to highlight my ambulatory experience. Yeah, it was a measly 30 hours compared to my other 1,000 hours of experience in all categories, but I learned something one of those three days about who I was as a person and what kind of doctor I wanted to be. The doctor I rode with also became one of my best friends, so I incorporated that into it.

Good luck future applicants, and hello soon to be classmates :)
Congrats! If you're still at Pitt (graduating this semester?), say hi to the Cathedral for me. I miss it.

:nod::rofl:

congrats!

I know who you are :) Name starts with an R like mine and you go to one of the 7 sister colleges. You should totally commit to Penn!!!

Haha ahhh I'm kind of scared to know how you figured that out. Then again... I guess I narrowed it down quite a bit with everything I've said.

I still have our folder and you said you interviewed with Dr. Holt in the afternoon, and everything you said, just made sense. I'm not that big a creep or else I don't think they'd have let me in :p

Made it!! Took me a little longer and I know I applied to a ton of schools but I was encouraged to apply broadly because of my poor GPA. Hopefully this helps others who had a rough first few years of undergraduate. Shoutout to all you wonderful people on SDN who helped me along the way :D

Personal Statement:
The thing I was bashed on most about my many many drafts of my PS is that I needed something that stands out from the rest of the applicants, so I guess that would be my advice for anyone applying hahaha.... Anyways I wrote about how I explored many different career opportunities veterinary medicine has to offer, how my involvement in biomedical research gave me a unique understanding of how research drives clinical medicine, and how that affected what I wanted to do as a career (I'm interested in pursuing a careeer as a clinician scientist at the moment)

That's it!! Not sure if you can tell, but I decided my junior year of college that I wanted be a veterinarian (at that time I had ~2.6 gpa), so the majority of the experiences I listed related to animals was obtained in 1.5-2 years. For the explanation section I briefly stated that I was immature, had no idea what I wanted to do when I first came to college, and had no motivation to do well academically. When I finally figured out what I wanted to do, I was able to show them that I was intellectually competent (as in get A's in classes) as well as capable of handling multiple things at once (full time student as well as two part time jobs, research on the weekdays and clinics on the weekends). So although it's certainly not easy recovering from a poor GPA, it's not impossible if you set your mind to it! just know your limits and prioritize what needs to be done to strengthen your application.

Also, something that many people here told me that was very very valuable is...apply smartly!! Apply to schools where your application is strongest. Most of the schools I applied to either ignored cumulative or gave significant weight to last 45 hour gpa and GRE...both which I did well in. It's something that does NOT take a lot of time to research on and will increase your chances of getting in.

Anyways congrats to everyone posting here and good luck to all future applicants!!

I'll trade. I'll have pizza kits sent from my dad's pizza place in exchange for homemade candy.
Woah. I need in on this. My dad can advise you financially. My mom can make you really good french toast. Please, I need pizza and candy!

I always suspected it, but reading through your experiences confirms for me that you're the coolest person ever. Have you always lived in Phoenix or did you move there from somewhere else in AZ when you did your informal post bacc?

Hahaha I'm really not that cool. I just like sharks....a LOT. lol. I have been a resident of AZ my whole life, so I graduated in 2014 from Cornell, then moved to Cali, then moved to South Africa, then came back to Phoenix for my post bacc. Now, I'm in Florida chilling until vet school starts. :D
