I concur.
redrocks said:Actually from what I understand there is no way to "beat" the match. In your example, you would match to school "A" because they want you. If you were later accepted to school "B" off the wait list your slot would open up for someone in school "A." If you had ranked school "B" second then you would not even be considered for it because you matched at a higher school on your list. Simply put, the match places you in the highest school on your list that accepts you, your rankings of the school does not affect the results. This is probably confusing, but hopefully you get the idea... 😕
Same in Fort Worth.... 🙁AsianDoc816 said:It's cold and rainy in Austin. Boo to cold and rainy.
Kal-El said:How would you guys rank the the UT schools (galveston, houston, san antonio, southwestern). And does anyone happen to have the average USMLE step 1 scores for any of these schools? Thanks.
roja said:Rank them how????? This is really a meaningless kind of question. Everybodies rank list is different. And trust me, outside of texas, people only have a vague idea that there are some medical schools in this big ass state in the middle of the country.
But for the Type A's, here was my rank list:
UTHSCSA
UTSW (love of my life was in Dallas at the time, otherwise it would have been third)
UT-galveston
UT-H (HATE houston)
I was accepted at Baylor and declined once I was accepted in SA. didn't apply to tech or A&M.
AsianDoc816 said:Wow, I don't think that I'd be able to turn down Baylor. San Antonio must be really awesome!
👍
roja said:Asiandoc- Well, again, you have to find the school thats right for you. I was a nontraditional with diverse interests. There isn't even a *tinge* of gunner in my personality. I had a couple of friends at baylor, similar to me (nontrad, low key, etc) and they were very very unhappy at baylor. Its a VERY competitive school. The student body is kind of hoity (not as bad as SW) and I am very not. I loved my interviews, etc, but I didn't feel that 18 mos was adequate for basic sciences (for me). And really, I *HATE* Houston. And I loved SA. It was perfect for me. Dr.Jones has a very progressive attitude towards medical school that fit with my views.
And what you realize is once you get out of the states, people have no idea what the differences are between the schools.

Well, you obviously hated Houston because I wasn't there. 😉roja said:Asiandoc- Well, again, you have to find the school thats right for you. I was a nontraditional with diverse interests. JDAD said:Finally heard from one of the Texas schools today. I interview at UT-San Antonio on the 29th of November.
Jdad, that's AWESOME!!!!! Congrats, I was stoked to read the news. I ran to my mailbox hoping to maybe get a little smidgen of love from SA, but nope, nothing but a letter telling me I gotta start paying back my student loans come December 13th... Sweet... I'll tell ya, I think that I would have no reservations in trading that letter for an interview invite to San Antonio. Any takers?JDAD said:Finally heard from one of the Texas schools today. JDAD said:Wow, the love from this thread is amazing. Thanks to everyone.
Now for even better news!!!!
I just received my UTSW interview!!!!!!! I am so excited that I am shaking. UTSW is my number one school. Dr. W called me personally to let me know about it. I don't have a date yet, but they said my email and letter would be sent later this week or early next week.
I can't explain how happy I am. About a month ago, I drove to Dallas and talked with Dr. W for about an hour. He is awsome and the school is awsome. I am really glad I made the trip.
Anyway, thanks again to everyone, I love you all. Now I have to go and post this in the "Better Week" thread to share the luck.
I may get to stay in Texas after all.

LanceP97 said:Congrats to everyone on their interview invites! I've still only had one interview (UT-Houston), but i'm keeping my fingers crossed that more are on their way. I loved UT-Houston by the way and my first interviewer actually invited me to shadow him at his clinic that afternoon. It was a great day overall.
LanceP97 said:Yes.. it was Dr. Farnie. He was really personable and great at what he does.

Obviously their research opportunities are amazing, but it seemed to me that they were selling us on the hands-on experiences in the hospital. I heard multiple times how everyone going through the OB/GYN rotations delivered 15+ babies by themselves at Parkland Hospital.SFAJess said:Does anybody have any info on how UTSW stands out from the other schools?
Thank you very much! That was extremely helpful! Do you know how to shadow a student? I don't think I would have another oppurtunity to go up there and I was thinking of doing this Friday which is the day before. Who do you contact and what would I need to wear? Thanks again!! 😀redrocks said:Obviously their research opportunities are amazing, but it seemed to me that they were selling us on the hands-on experiences in the hospital. Their new student center is awesome 👍 and they do their best to dispell the idea that there is a competitive atmosphere there. It didn't seem like it to me, and the 4th year video made it seem that they have cohesive classes that stick together. They also will give you the opportunity to shadow a student on rotations on some other day so that you can see how life really is on campus, since it is deserted on Saturday. I hope this helps, and good luck on your interview!![]()
