Actually from what I understand there is no way to "beat" the match. In your example, you would match to school "A" because they want you. If you were later accepted to school "B" off the wait list your slot would open up for someone in school "A." If you had ranked school "B" second then you would not even be considered for it because you matched at a higher school on your list. Simply put, the match places you in the highest school on your list that accepts you, your rankings of the school does not affect the results. This is probably confusing, but hopefully you get the idea... 😕

Yes, this is the way that they explained the match when I interviewed at TCOM. They did an excellent explanation BTW. Essentially, if you don't get into your top school, you still have a chance after the match. Whether you get in depends on 1) where you are on the waitlist and 2) how many people decide not to attend that school (due to their own matching process/out of state school acceptances). I know a guy who was waitlisted at Southwestern (he didn't match initially) and got in right before school started. Now how's that for ups and downs?

It's cold and rainy in Austin. Boo to cold and rainy.

bump...

How was everybody's weekend? Hope the cold, damp weather didn't dampen it too much!

How would you guys rank the the UT schools (galveston, houston, san antonio, southwestern). And does anyone happen to have the average USMLE step 1 scores for any of these schools? Thanks.

Rank them how????? This is really a meaningless kind of question. Everybodies rank list is different. And trust me, outside of texas, people only have a vague idea that there are some medical schools in this big ass state in the middle of the country.

But for the Type A's, here was my rank list:

UTHSCSA
UTSW (love of my life was in Dallas at the time, otherwise it would have been third)
UT-galveston
UT-H (HATE houston)

I was accepted at Baylor and declined once I was accepted in SA. didn't apply to tech or A&M.

I guess it was kind of a vague question. What do you like about San Antonio? Is it the clinical experience, the curriculum, or the friendly interviewers and students?

Hey there, I am a MSI at Tech. Here was my ranking:

1) Tech
2) Galveston
3) A&M
4) UTSW
5) UT-H
6) TCOM

I have lived in the DFW area for the past 23 yrs. I have family that lives there. I spent the past two yrs doing research for UTSW at the Dallas VA. Yea, you would think that I would have ranked UTSW as #1 or something else besides Tech. The follwoing are my reasons: I ranked tech high b/c the cost of living is cheap and I have a family to support. There is no traffic and the commute is 10 min max and I live as far as way as possible w/o being outside the city limits. More importantly I liked the cohesiveness that existed b/w the facutly and students. I loved Galveston, the school that is, but the city is horrible. If UTMB where in a different city I would have definitely ranked it number one. A&M was next. Great school, great faculty, didn't like having to move to Temple during 3-4th yrs. UTSW is a great school, but it didn't appeal to me as a med school and the cost of living is pretty expsensive. Maybe for residency. UT-H, well what can I say, the previous poster summed it up. TCOM, excellent school. If I were interested in family medicine I would have gone there hands down. Basically, you have to make your decision for yourself. No one else can make this decision for you. Different factors affect people differently and play into their lives differently. Go with your gut. ALl schools are pretty much equal when it comes to med school. Residency is where it truly matters where you go I feel.

Wow, I don't think that I'd be able to turn down Baylor. San Antonio must be really awesome!
👍

will anyone be at either A&M on thursday or tech (lubbock) on Friday? PM me and maybe we can meet up!

best of luck to everyone in the coming week...i've got that feeling that it's gonna be a great week for EVERYONE!

Is anyone interviewing at A&M on Dec. 9? Filo Maldonado is going to be going to Trinity tomorrow to give a lecture about A&M, so I'm a little excited about meeting him before the interview and getting some of my questions about the process answered. If anyone has any questions for him that you aren't getting answered, I'll be happy to ask him tomorrow. Just let me know 🙂

I took my MCATs in August, and I called the schools last week. I believe most of the schools told me that they JUST finished inputing the scores on their database, so I'm sure that you are going to get your invites any time now. Have faith....they'll come 😳

Asiandoc- Well, again, you have to find the school thats right for you. I was a nontraditional with diverse interests. There isn't even a *tinge* of gunner in my personality. I had a couple of friends at baylor, similar to me (nontrad, low key, etc) and they were very very unhappy at baylor. Its a VERY competitive school. The student body is kind of hoity (not as bad as SW) and I am very not. I loved my interviews, etc, but I didn't feel that 18 mos was adequate for basic sciences (for me). And really, I *HATE* Houston. And I loved SA. It was perfect for me. Dr.Jones has a very progressive attitude towards medical school that fit with my views.

And what you realize is once you get out of the states, people have no idea what the differences are between the schools.

Thank you for the insight, roja. I'm part-gunner, but I don't enjoy too much competition. It's just that Baylor has always been my dream school.

From my experience with meeting students at Baylor, they certainly did not seem 'hoity' at all. That was what made Baylor so suprising to me when I visited them.

Well, you obviously hated Houston because I wasn't there. 😉

Great post, roja! Thanks. 🙂

Evo- obviously. 😉

Asiandoc- well, that's why there are different medical schools. There is one for everyone. It wasn't really ever my dream school (didnt really have one since I came late to medical school). Don't get me wrong. Its a fabulous school. It just wasn't well suited to me.

latinfridley- Like most things, its a generalization. I think the type of students that tend to go to baylor are incredibly motivated and incredibly competitive. Its why its a good school. Obviously there will be exceptions, but a large majority of them were. I didn't get a feeling of hoitiness from the one day I was there.. More from talkiing to my friends, the type of students interviewing and hanging out. I don't mean it in a bad way. Its more just a way in which the students etc interacted. I wanted a very low key school.

Finally heard from one of the Texas schools today. I interview at UT-San Antonio on the 29th of November.

Congrats JDAD..I am sure you will do just fine.

Hey guys. Remember a few months ago when I said Tech weighs the interview 40%? Well, I need to retract that statement 😳 . Turns out, your application is 40% of your "score." The interview is actually 60%! :scared: 😱

Jdad, that's AWESOME!!!!! Congrats, I was stoked to read the news. I ran to my mailbox hoping to maybe get a little smidgen of love from SA, but nope, nothing but a letter telling me I gotta start paying back my student loans come December 13th... Sweet... I'll tell ya, I think that I would have no reservations in trading that letter for an interview invite to San Antonio. Any takers?

AJ

WAY TO GO JDAD!!! i told you all those invites would be rolling in for you soon! congrats!

no love from baylor today. boo.

ACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I called three schools today (A&M, Tech, and UTMB) NONE have started to process my application because they haven't "gotten" my second LOR. It's on the TMDSAS website, it got in at the beginning of August. I'd called them a couple of weeks ago and they all said that they would get it/download it whatever. Two weeks later, nothing. Dude, I'm so f---ing screwed. One LOR won't hurt that badly but what's gonna hurt is that they haven't even started to process my stuff yet. Ay, I just want to throw up and go find a job digging ditches or something. Plenty of new housing being built in Austin, I could find a job there, unless they need recommendations as well.
😡 :scared: 🙁

Wow, the love from this thread is amazing. Thanks to everyone.

Now for even better news!!!!

I just received my UTSW interview!!!!!!! I am so excited that I am shaking. UTSW is my number one school. Dr. W called me personally to let me know about it. I don't have a date yet, but they said my email and letter would be sent later this week or early next week.

I can't explain how happy I am. About a month ago, I drove to Dallas and talked with Dr. W for about an hour. He is awsome and the school is awsome. I am really glad I made the trip.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone, I love you all. Now I have to go and post this in the "Better Week" thread to share the luck.

I may get to stay in Texas after all.

Okay JDAD is officially the cool kid of the week even though the week just started. I hope people still waiting on San Antonio (including me 😀 ) get shown some love this week.

Congrats JDAD! Now they'll all come rolling in....at least that's what happened to me. This week WILL (or already IS) a good week!

I'm kind of sad that I'm done getting interview invites...I've already forgotten about all of the excitement that comes with those emails and letters!

Big CONGRATS to you JDAD!!! 😀

So is anyone going to be at UTSW this Sat? PM me if you are and want to meet up!

Congrats to everyone on their interview invites! I've still only had one interview (UT-Houston), but i'm keeping my fingers crossed that more are on their way. I loved UT-Houston by the way and my first interviewer actually invited me to shadow him at his clinic that afternoon. It was a great day overall.

Was this Dr. Farnie?

Yes.. it was Dr. Farnie. He was really personable and great at what he does.

That's exactly how I feel! I had a *flicker* of hope when JDAD announced his SA invite, but alas, my mailbox was empty of interview invites. Really wish I would have applied to more schools or had something to keep me going until Feb. 1....

Hey, but Baylor and UT-Houston are RIGHT next door to each other....and Baylor is an awesome school as well! CONGRATS!

Hey,

Just wanted to let everyone know that there is still hope. I hadn't heard anything from any schools for a while so I decided to call each of them today to make sure they weren't missing anything. First school I called was UT-San Antonio and the lady told me that they had just mailed me an interview invite and that it should be here within a couple days.

AsianDoc816 - I know you wanted that SA invite.. so i'd suggest calling them and seeing if it's on its way.

Goodluck everyone and congrats on the invites!

I'll be there, too. :>

The only pitfall is that it happens the day after one final and the day before another, but it's well worth it.

I'm not sure if this has been covered before, but: if I withdraw my application from one of the TX schools (I applied to all 6 allopathic), will that hurt my chances of acceptance at the others?

Congrats LanceP.

Calicokat- How could it? It only will decrease the chance of matching by 1 school. The other schools don't know who is applying to what schools.

Statistically your chances would decrease, but if you have good enough stats to comfortably match somewhere, then why would it matter if you withdrew?

Does anybody have any info on how UTSW stands out from the other schools? I'm interviewing there on Saturday and I really don't know why I would like it other than they have 4 nobel prize laureates on their faculty which they make clear on their website. Do these guys even teach the med students in their first 2 years? I know a lot of people want to go to UTSW, but what makes it better than any of the other schools?

I don't know anything about it yet and I suppose I will learn more at the interview, but if anybody has already been to the interview, would you mind filling me in on some info? Thanks a bunch in advance!

Also, is anybody applying for a military health professions scholarship? What things have you heard about this? I'm being told by people to not believe the recruiter, but I'm still applying....applying doesn't obligate me.

Obviously their research opportunities are amazing, but it seemed to me that they were selling us on the hands-on experiences in the hospital. I heard multiple times how everyone going through the OB/GYN rotations delivered 15+ babies by themselves at Parkland Hospital.
Their new student center is awesome 👍 and they do their best to dispell the idea that there is a competitive atmosphere there. It didn't seem like it to me, and the 4th year video made it seem that they have cohesive classes that stick together. They also will give you the opportunity to shadow a student on rotations on some other day so that you can see how life really is on campus, since it is deserted on Saturday. I hope this helps, and good luck on your interview! :luck:

Thank you very much! That was extremely helpful! Do you know how to shadow a student? I don't think I would have another oppurtunity to go up there and I was thinking of doing this Friday which is the day before. Who do you contact and what would I need to wear? Thanks again!! 😀
