Bump............so after receiving the computer letter, I am not sure what to get. I was going to go with an updated desktop since my current one keeps turning off without notice, but now it sounds like they are saying to get a laptop. My buddy that is a MS 3 there said he never used a laptop during school. What are yall doing? Any current students with some insight?
 
Once I got used to the convenience of a portable with wireless internet access...there was no going back.

I am big on accessability so I obviously favor a laptop. Considering that they have a wireless network on campus it would be nice to be able to look up information on the fly.

But that's just me...
 
I have a laptop, i never take it to class. But it helps having a good computer at home w high speed internet cuz there;s alot of material online and on CDs that can help u study at home. Doesnt matter if u get a desktop or laptop, but make sure u got high speed internet and, good processor, and alot of memory so ur comoputer isnt slow. Also a printer would help too, cuz Im always printing stuff.

Thanks for the input. When I interviewed there I don't remember seeing a computer lab or a library for that matter. I am sure there is a library somewhere, but what about a computer lab? Are there ample public computers for all the students to use? If not that may solidify my reason for buying a laptop. If not, I am leaning towards the desktop. Later...

The medical school library has a computer lab and its open till i think midnight or 1 AM everyday

The undergrad library is open till 2 AM and its right down the street from the medical school, it has free printing so I print alot of stuff from there.

There are computers in the study carrals that u can use, the carrols are open 24 hours a day. Now in the new academic building , the classrooms and labs have ports everywhere on the desks for labtops so alot people bring labtops to class and type notes and record lectures on their laptops. The new academic building is very laptop friendly. So either way, a desktop or laptop, u cant go wrong.

I personally like a laptop, cuz my small computer is so powerful, it fits nicely on my desk at home, without the hassle of a huge monitor and machine, and I have speakers, keyboard and mouse hooked up to it so its easy for me, and I like the fact taht I can take it to class if I ever wanted to. But desktops have their advantages as well, they are much cheaper.

I am coming in town a day early to get a few things done and was wondering if anyone playing in the golf tournament would like to play a few holes on Friday or Thursday afternoon if they are around?

Bogumil (Mike), I would love to play a couple of holes before the tourney however I have to work until 12:00 on Friday. So I won't be rolling into Lubbock until 6 on Friday afternoon. 🙁 If I am not mistaken I think the dinner starts around 7, so that won't allow me any time to hit some balls. If something changes before then, then I'll try and post it on here before you take off. Don't wait on me though, go ahead and do your thing, more than likely my plans aren't going to change.


Shivmeh, I was told to wait on purchasing books for MSI because a lot of the upper classmen end up giving a lot of their books to the incoming class. Plus there are several books that are on the list that most students say you don't need. I am going to wait until orientation to buy. Just my .02 worth.
 
Does the Tech campus have wireless internet capabilities? I thought I heard they didn't...
 
I believe the HSC does. I was there last night and they told me that they have it in the class rooms and the Synergistic Center.

The new academic classroom bldg does have wireless internet. That's where you'll be having your labs and classes. Many of my classmates who choose to attend class come with their laptops. I don't know if the main HSC bldg is the same, but then you will not be in that bldg much.

Yes the entire HSC is wired for wireless internet, just get any 802.11lb card with 128bit wep and you're fine.

The entire Tech Undergrad campus is also wireless.

There are ethernet ports in every room. But wireless is much more convenient.

I recommend you get a laptop under 5 lbs or so, you're allowed to spend about 2000 on a computer so I suggest getting a good one. The thing is you really want a relatively small and light laptop that you can carry around with you to class (if you decide to go). Also alot of the notes, lectures and stuff are becoming available online, so a laptop is definitely the way to go.

Also getting a high speed internet connection is a must if you plan on living relatively far from campus.

Hey guys. There seems to be a fine number of people with computer knowledge on this thread and I need some help. I am looking to purchase a laptop, if at all possible one under $1,500. I want something I can take around without much hassle, so the lighter the load the better. I want something with ample memory for occasional game play, but I will primarily be using it to write papers, watch DVD's and to rummage around the internet. If anyone has the time to configure a DELL computer online, and give me the link to the configured computer with your personal insight I would be much obliged. Thank you very much.
 
Hey centrum, I recommend getting either a Dell D600 or D505.

You can probably price those around 1500 if you go through Dell Small Business instead of Dell Home. Also check www.gotapex.com (as posted).

Also if you own IBM stock, you can buy IBM Thinkpads in the X and T series for very chearp.

Please send me an IM if you want to talk about it more. I recommend waiting till August to buy a new computer though, tends to be cheaper and or you get the newest stuff.

Just got the aid email. first it shows me with a family contribution of $8k, then below it there is a similar aid analysis with everything covered. Guess I'll have to call the FA office and find out what's up.
 
Yea, I just got my finaid email as well. I'm eligible for more than what I thought I would get. Now the hard part is deciding who is going to be my lender for the sub. and unsub. loans. Talk about headache. Does anyone recommend a certain company? In the "finaid" forum they were discussing this. Someone said that the following three were good lenders:

www.nowloans.org

I guess some lenders charge origination fees amongst other things that can total up to 3-4% of your loan. Apparently these three don't. I am leaning towards the "northstar" program. Anybody have some more info on these or other companies? Any help is welcome. I'll be calling the finaid office soon as well.
 
I, too, would be interested on information about loans, especially since I couldn't come to the Spring Training Weekend. I have yet to receive my award email but I only was able to file FAFSA last week.

I'm graduating on Sunday and will be up in Lubbock at the end of the month to look at apartments. Has anybody decided where he/she will live? Did they talk about roommates at the Spring Training?

I'm living at the waterford next year. I've heard good things about it and the management is great. as for roommates, i realized at spring training that a lot of 1st years live on their own. congrats to those that are graduating :clap: and good luck with the apt shopping.

2 yrs ago I was also deciding between Tech and what was then MCP Hahnemann. It was a tough decision, and there were many things about MCP I loved, but ultimately decided to head here. Well, 2nd year is almost up, just have one last final exam tomorrow and then it's on to El Paso (yay!).

Good luck in med school, you'll be fine wherever you go, and it's definitely a good dilemma to be.

I filled out my FAFSA and institutional form back in early March, and I just found out how much I'm eligible for. Pretty scary to hear, I will be X amount of dollars in the hole in two months.

I thought the whole Spring Training thing was okay, but not very informative or helpful. I'm living with two other guys next year, one a friend from college and the other my cousin. I know of some good people living close to the medical campus who are looking for roommates, so PM me and I'll let you know how to get ahold of them.
 
For those of you inquiring about lenders...
If you used one in undergrad, I would go ahead & stick with that one because it's a lot less of a headache trying to communicate & get deferments from one lender (trust me, I know, I have 3). If not, go with T.H.E. (northstar.org). I began using them for grad school because I was tired of my other lender taking so much of my loan out in origination fees. Been very happy with them so far, loan is always in early, no fees, incentives if you make payments on time, easy deferrments, etc.

OK, entirely separate topic...does anybody know of any apartment locator services in Lubbock? I've been going through my apartment guide, but am having trouble finding a decent place that allows pets. Plus, I have no idea what are good & bad areas of Lubbock. Ideally, I'd prefer to rent a house so my dog will have a yard, but I don't kow who to go through to find available places.

I will have to disrespectfully disagree with the idea of using the same lender as in undergrad. If all of your loans in undergrad are with the same lender, use a different one in med school. If you use the same lender, you will not be able to consolidate your loans, which of course has a much lower interest rate. Using 2 or more lenders allows you to consolidate with any company.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with shawred in regards to picking a different lender than the one in undergrad. When it comes time to consolidate, if you don't have more than one lender then you won't be able to. I have decided to go with T.H.E. for my loan. Sounds like the best deal.

Arsenalgunner, as far as places to avoid in Lubbock I have been told and witnessed first hand, that the northeast corner of Lubbock is something definitely to avoid. Probably East of University and North of say, 50th. As for apt complexes I can't help you there. We just purchased a home south of the loop. As far as renting goes, you may be able to find a realtor to help you out, or if you're in Lubbock just drive around the neighborhoods for "For Rent" signs and write down the numbers. I would strongly suggest renting. Our payment is less than it would be for a two bedroom apt.

Sallazar, I have started the shot thing. Basically, I have been trying to dig up past shot records. I recently had the entire Hep titers/panels run to show I have had my HBV immunization and am free from the others. Still need to get my tetanus done, and a couple others. I currently work at a hospital so they are free. Why not let someone else pay for them, right?

I just finished up my first year at tech, but im transferring to U. of Mississippi. I am moving from Lubbock this week; so if u guys want furniture, tv, microwave, desk, etc... Im selling it real cheap cuz i gots to go. PM me for details.

Do you mind telling us why are you transferring? Also, I've heard it's damned near impossible to transfer from one medical school to another, how have you managed to do it? Thanks.
 
im transferring to U of Mississippi cuz my fiance is there. It's alot easier for me to go there than for her to come her cuz she is premed and wants to medicine in like 2 years so if she came to tech, i would be in amarrillo or el paso, so I decided to just transfer to MS.

I emailed them to transfer after my second year, but Mississippi was cool and wanted to take me now so I was like cool, whatever..

Its easy to transfer, tech didnt give me any problems and was real supportive, so if u have reasons like family, gf, etc... its always worth a try.

Just FYI. I got a letter from Tech today letting me know I'll be staying in Lubbock for the 3rd and 4th year. Yours should be in the mail, if you haven't already gotten it.
 
I got my letter as well--will be going to El Paso. If anyone is still looking for apts--I just signed a pre-lease at Canyon Crossing--it was the best deal of all the apts I looked at--$495/mo. w/ a yr lease for a 1 bedroom (over 700 sqr ft) and the apts were in very good shape. The complex is just outside the loop and less than 10 min. from campus. If anybody wants more info you can PM me.
 
No letter for me. Since Dec, I've given them my new address 3 times and still, I get nothing.......

I was in Lubbock before commencement and got a place at Canyon Crossing, too. I guess that makes us neighbors sallazar. When you moving in?

Finally finished off all my loan stuff, and now i'm just taking it easy till i get back to the states mid july. So when are all of you moving? I'm going to EP, too. I really hope its all that the people with good things to say about it make it out to be.
 
I'm probably moving in the weekend of July 30th, I'm holding out on my job to get that full last paycheck in July. I'm glad you got a place at Canyon Crossing--seems like it will be a nice place to live at an affordable price. I too hope El Paso turns out to be a good choice--I need to brush up on my Spanish!

I just got back from moving in this past weekend. Sure am glad that is overwith. It seems like I have been to Lubbock 6-8 times since I found out I was accepted there. Those 5-6 hour road trips from DFW are starting to tear me down. BOGUMIL, were you able to find a house? If so, what part of the city is it located? I officialy won't be living in Lubbock until the 1st of Aug. I, like Sallazar am working until the end of July for that last pay check. I am game though for some sort of get together, pending the date and time of said get together.
 
Holding off on the house hunting for a while. Just going to find an apartment. I'll be up there staring the MBA part of the program (a semester late).

I'll send an email out to the 'official' class of 2008 listserv for a possible "get together".

Did you ever find a place? Wasn't sure if you ever got a house or not.

Family friendly, low cost of living, good schools (for my kids), my brother is here and I liked the school.

Exactly the same reasons as THACKL stated. Cheap cost of living made it possible for my family and I to buy a home. When I interviewed the faculty and student body were by far the friendliest and most out going. The city is small and is a college town (which I don't care for too much) but it is without a doubt the friendliest TX city I have ever been in and I have lived in TX for 24 years. I like having a split campus. It makes the rotation sizes a lot smaller than at other med schools giving you more opportunity in my opinion.

anyone out there ever drive from Houston to lubbock? I wanted to know what the best/shortest route was. Yahoo gives me the route through dallas, i heard there were better ones. Moving up in a few weeks, can't wait! Thanks!
 
i just got back from apt-hunting in lubbock. on the way up, we took houston-dallas, dallas-lubbock. This route is longer, but faster due to the major highways. On the way back, we took lubbock-dallas, dallas-waco, waco-houston. This route is shorter by about 50-ish miles, but since you go through small towns (with lower speed limits) it actually takes a little longer. Hope this helps 🙂
 
Janus82, how many hours did it take you to get to Lubbock through Dallas?
