I agree with that last comment, USC is definitely more deserving of you.

I dunno why everyone keeps attacking DLOVE, people like different schools. If someone said that they ranked UT-H last and were sorry to have matched there, I'd understand. All the schools have good and bad qualities, it's ok if UTMB wasn't a good fit for him, and it's ok that he's disappointed about matching there.

Well said, man.

However, at this point, I would have been happy just to match. 🙂

Well, you know TB, you and I go way back (way back being December, right? Anyways, we got each other's back), and I've always been impressed with your respect for others, even-headedness, and humility. So I'm sure you'll realize there was no ill will here toward any other SDNer, just merely hoping that everyone finds their fit.

And furthermore, I hope you, like Dlove, get your wish ('cept, while I'm not "attacking" dl per se, I have more of a soft spot for you and your dreams 😉 ).

Let's just hope for the best for everybody...every person that moves up opens a new spot for the rest

And it's okay for UTMB students to be a little disappointed to have a spoilsport future classmate who would rather pay 50K/ year to go out of state. God Bless America !🙂

Not to stir up any more trouble, but I ranked TCOM last and was a bit upset when I found out I matched there. I think my parents were more upset than I was; they never wanted me to apply to TCOM in the first place because it was an osteopathic school. Stuff like this happens; we can either deal with it, or reapply next year and hope for something better.

That sounds like an awesome proposal. 👍

*sniff* So sweet! Besides, you should defend your school. It's a great one!! It's just not for everyone. How have you been, by the way?

I hope D LOVE gets his wish. Everyone should attend the place where they will be the happiest.

Besides, on a more selfish note, if he gets in to USC, that means movement at UTMB, which will create a ripple effect and better my chances.

Good luck all! :luck:

Back to my scheduled bloody mary.

XOXO

I think it's funny how like 5 of us said the same thing at the same time.

You are already in, so stay in. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a DO. Really, think about it. Would you like going through this whole process again? What if next time aroung you dont get accepted not even to TCOM, then you will be feeling worst than you are now. I had a friend who applied about 5 yrs ago, got accepted to UTH but did not like it. He decided to drop his acceptance and wait around for the next cycle. He was very confident that he was going to get in to his school of choice (UTSW), because he had the grades and MCAT. His first time around he interviewed at about 4 schools. Needless to say he has been applying since and has not been accepted again. He did not even get any interviews this time around (third time applying). On his second time around this stuff the interviewers would ask about his declined admissions to a very good school. I guess the adcoms sees it as a weakness.
So think about it before you make any decisions you might regret later on in life.

What? "I want booze?" Cuz I was thinking it! 😍

Well, UTMB is my dream school for experience, curriculum, student body, research, healthcare exposure, etc, so maybe I have blinders on when someone knocks it (but not enough to take their name out of the accepted list, mind you).

Sure, it's "Galvetraz," but that's a moniker of the same effect as when a mom calls her kids "little heathens" (lovingly 🙂 ).

Yeah, everyone needs to get their wish: A&M is a very community-oriented/supportive school, and you're very much someone who would thrive in that sort of environment, so I hope the best for you!

But overall, I still think that ALL Texas med schools offer the best education in the country. 👍

Of course! Texas, in general, rules!!! 😀

I love TAMU! I just wish they had loved me back. Oh well!

BTW, I think Galveston is awesome! Not just the school, but the island too. Yes, I may get flamed for saying so, but I am biased. As a native Houstonian, Galveston is like an extension of my home. So for those of you that dog the island, BOO! :meanie: I think Galveston rocks!

Fotolilith, I am virtually passing you booze right now! 😉

Well said, coomasie. The only thing med schools care about more than competence/ intelligence is reliability and PERSISTENCE. They want to know if you're gonna stand strong through all the hell they're gonna pile on you.

Tho, if you feel that TCOM is not the right fit for you, then be sure you can convincingly explain why the next time you apply. good luck!

Didn't mean to make ya mad fotolilith, i love all the texas peeps 😍

Yea, I liked UTMB a lot too, the students were so nice! I just ranked UT-H 2nd and UTMB 3rd cuz I have been in H-town for the past 4 years, my social support network is here, and well, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know 🙄

I'm certainly not complaining about matching with UT-H but I really fell in love with UTSW, and it would help others here who really want to go to UT-H badly if they'd show me some love, know what I mean?

Here's hoping to great outcomes for everyone! 😎

hey what number did you rank tcom, when you say last, is it 3rd or 7th or 15th. where did you rank it.
also, i believe obtaining DO will limit your opprtunities in the future (i don't want to start anything, but). if you search on SDN on other medical or post-medical school forum, eventhough DO students don't come out and say it but from the sound of it some of them got a raw deal. what i mean is for certain speciality it can hurt you more than you would think. if you wanna fo primary care it won't matter but if not ......

Damn straight! Every time I hit the island I feel like I'm coming home... and this was years before I even applied to med school. 😎
...I only wish it would import some of the bats from Austin to take care of the bugs. But that's my major grudge. 🙂

What was your HS mascot, TB? Mine was the un-PC "redskins." They tried to change it to something more culturally sensitive, but after a student body petition about it, the choice with the highest number of votes, "Honkies," was shot down by the administration. 🙂

hey TB and all,

so why don't these people try to fix these problem instead of just going with it. I agree this thing is sort of getting lucky sort of thing, so my question is why don't these admissions people try to figure someway to manipulate it so it's based on merit and not on what kind of interviewer get. cause this is my first time going through it and saying that it blows is a gross understatement.

happy waitin

I was told by an interviewer at UTMB that the interview only counts 5% towards the entire admissions process (given - this only applies to UTMB). There is a chance I misunderstood him though on account of his thick Indian accent.

Honkies!

Unfortunately, bugs are a fact of life in Southeast Texas. Now if we could just get rid of those enormous cockroaches!!! 🙂 Those things scare me to death. I used an entire bottle of Tilex to kill one once and the sucker wouldn't die! 😱

HS mascot was the golden eagles. Not very exciting, heh heh.

That sounds about right. It really freaked me out, cuz my UTMB interviews seemed the, uh, most unimpressive (so I kinda wrote them off at first). I ended up writing a (thankfully anonymous) note on my interview day evaluation about how, even tho I knew I'd succeed in UTMB's curriculum, I didn't think the interviews were enough to convince the adcom of this.

Like I said, I'm glad I signed that self-righteous note anonymously. 😉

Fairly reliable sources tell me that the schools with the MOST emphasis on interviews are:
TCOM, UTHSCSA, A&M, TECH, BAYLOR

and schools with the least interview emphasis are:
UTMB, UTH (depends - I know this year they rejected some MD/PhD students based on interviews alone), UTSW

Two things:

1) Just out of curiosity, Blue Orchid, what's wrong with being a DO/TCOM?

I'm not going to flame you about DO vs. MD, I'd just like to hear your opinion of the school and the profession as a whole and your reasons behind why you're disappointed.

AND

2) I agree with the rest of you that this whole admissions process seems quite random.

If that's the case I am screwed..I actually can't believe I am on their waitlist considering my ist interviewer asked for a brief synposis of a presentation I gave in 2001 on the Neurobiology of the stress response.. my answer was to just stare back blankly and say "huh?" and the second only asked two questions..1) what does your daddy do? and 2) Does your mom have a GED or hs diploma..he then proceded to waive me away and tell me he needed to read my persomal statement...strange..

I'm sorry that happened!! :scared: :scared:

My Tech interviewer (some dermatologist) was very stoic and kept grilling me on why I applied out-of-state! "Do you know how much it costs to attend at xyz out-of-state college??" I should have just left those fields on TMDSAS blank... 🙄

Pretty much what thehopeful said. Education-wise, there is really nothing wrong with TCOM. I thought the people there were friendly and my friends who go there really like it. My greatest concern is the limitations that DOs face when applying for residencies outside of primary care, and having to combat the negative views that some people still have toward DOs. Mainly, I thought my stats (posted sometime earlier) were competitive enough to get accepted into an MD school, and the fact they weren't was disappointing.

My ego, then, is the enemy. But I'm working on changing that 🙂

In case anyone was wondering, "why apply to TCOM then," when I applied to the Texas med schools I focused on the similarities between MDs and DOs, not the differences. TCOM was my first interview, and after interviewing at the MD schools, I started dwelling on differences....

Hi Everyone,

I will be leaving my job as a research technician in the Baylor Neonatology Department at Texas Children's Hospital. We are looking for someone to replace me in May 2005 and I wanted to see if there are any interested pre-meds/or otherwise interested candidates in the Houston area who might want some research experience. This may be an excellent opportunity for reapplicants to enhance their resume.

The position is in a microbiology/immunology lab working with rat and mouse models to test various means to treat/prevent various types of bacterial infections. I've had many opportunities to shadow teams of neonatologists in the NICU, which has given me incredible perspective on the field I hope to eventually enter. I've had vivid and meaningful experiences to share during interviews as a result of being exposed firsthand to some of the issues we are working on in our lab. Also, I have been invited to attend countless pediatrics lectures at Baylor and have learned a great deal.

Availability: Starting in May 2005
Hours: 40/wk
Location: Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, TX
Employer: Baylor College of Medicine
Salary: ~$22,000/year
Requirements: No prior knowledge/experience necessary.

I have really enjoyed this job and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in going to medical school. If you're interested, please either send me a private message on SDN or email me at [email protected]. Sending your resume would be helpful.

Thanks!

-MLewis

Page 2 is not acceptable. 🙂

How is everyone doing this morning?

Anybody have any news to share?

Who's turn is it to call a school and bug them?

oh TB, i was thinking the same thing. someone need to call a school. i'm scared, like what if they have caller id and figure out my number and take me off the waitlist for bugging them. i know i'll just call them from school, then let 'em figure it out.

but I wanted to call and ask the school whether they over accepted people last year and if so by how many and even then they had to go to the waitlist, i figure if they say yes then i might be able to sleep better.

btw, the actual number for UTH is 241, i know someone who got in but for some reason there names not on the list but they did get in. and i know someone who already told them no, so i bet teh list was like 250. damn.

so did anyone figure tech, how many people they overaccepted and what their class size is.
thanx

A good friend of mine just graduated from TCOM last May. He's in Arkansas doing an Orthopedic surgery residency (MD residency) at the moment. I hope you get into the school you want but if not I know with some determination you can do whatever you want in medicine even coming in as a DO. Hopefully this puts your mind at ease for whatever specialty you wanted to do.

Why don't you call and get an actual headcount from the admissions office?

I called the UT-H admissions office today and they said they have 230 students for next year. They told me they do not expect to take anyone from the waitlist this year because so many people accepted their offer. That's very disappointing to me as I am on their alternate list and was hoping to at least have a chance at getting in. 🙁

Alright, am I being overly sensitive to be offended by the e-mail sent out from TCOM regarding their intensive post-bac program? For some reason, I just thought it was in bad taste. I guess I took it as "You weren't good enough to get into our program, but if you come and spend a year with us, you just might have a chance!"

Don't give up just yet, a lot of us are still waiting to hear from other schools. I'd gladly drop UT-H for an acceptance from WashU, Case, or Southwestern. And I'm sure there are at LEAST 30 people in the same boat. A lot of people will probably drop UT-H for Baylor as well. Don't get discouraged! :luck:

Thanks for the encouraging words. I don't see how UT-Houston thinks it knows as of RIGHT NOW that they will not take anyone off the waitlist (which is not to say your phone call didn't happen utgirl812). I just think it is reasonable to assume 31 kids will move. In fact, I don't think anybody knows anything new until more private schools start snatching kids with TMDSAS spots off the TMDSAS school roster. And from what I've heard, a lot of east coast schools start sending out stuff march 15. until then we can still fret and worry (which is perfectly cool since i'm doin it right now) but I don't think anybody knows anything new. good luck everybody. late.
