I'm just about to start a 2+ week road trip where I will be program/city jumping. I'm beginning to think about how I'll be eating bad food on the road... coupled with the typical 3 course meal + drinks with the residents... and sometimes the breakfast and lunch served during interview day itself. I can easily see myself packing on a significant amount of weight over the next 2 months.

I tried to book hotels with fitness centers, but realistically i wont have the time/energy to knock out a good enough workout to burn all those calories..

Anyone else have similar thoughts? any good plans on how to keep in shape while on the road?

I've been thinking of this too. Starting a three week interview blitz on tuesday.

I also tried to book hotels with gyms - plus I looked at the "benefits" page of the programs to see if they provide a gym membership then went to see if those gyms provide day passes so I can check out the gym while I'm there (something small and stupid but pretty important for my quality of life).

At the night before dinner, take leftovers back to the hotel. I've been booking places with a mini-frig and microwave so that means dinner the next night in the hotel room.

I'm aiming to only gain 5 lbs (and hopefully just maintain)

Whenever I am taking a break from interviews, I exercise and diet. But, when I am actually ON the interview trail, I just let myself eat whatever and not exercise... Interviews are stressful enough.

I gained about 10-15 lbs on the interview trail (I'm a 6 foot plus 200lb plus guy). I also did a 4 week 4000 mile road trip and was always eating crap and sitting around all day driving. I just worked it off afterwards. It's not that big a deal.

Your weight control is that sensitive that going on the road for a couple of weeks really knocks it out of balance? Do you have any idea how many calories you have to eat to gain 15 lbs? 3500 calories x 15 lbs= 52500. That's like eating 91 Big Macs in addition to what you normally eat in a 2 week time period. 6 1/2 Big Macs a day. Plus your regular meals. Good luck with that. I think your idea of how well residency programs feed you on the trail is a bit inflated.

If you're that worried about the big meal at night, eat a cliff bar for breakfast and a McDonald's salad for lunch. You'll have plenty of calories left over for that 3 course meal, without having to find a new gym every day.
