Can we trim some of the fat off this list... A lot of these people are average to above average candidates and have what it takes to get a couple interviews based on sheer numbers alone. Definitely not UNDER DOG status....

You are right a few can be taken off, but what I wish this also accounted for was a bit of ECs. I spoke to a few admissions people and they stressed so much on how its so important to build a good profile and rapport with the healthcare system by involving yourself in the community. Hence why I feel some of these may in fact be just numerically sound applicants yet may have some red flag areas in one not having enough clinical exposure reflective of the mission of the school.

Its amazing what ECs can do if you are a below average applicant. A lot of my friends got in because they were able to articulate their learning experience as a statement to the schools by ensuring theyll be an asset.

While true, most applicants aren't taking gap years to work on an extreme amount of hours of clinical. I believe the population across those with low stats and those with high stats are similar for those with a lot of clinical experiences.

Those students who get accepted with low stats and lots of EC's are pretty rare, evidenced by the high average GPA and MCAT scores of schools. Schools care more about producing doctors with high match rates and high passing rates. With high stats, it isn't necessary to have a tremendous amount of EC's. Having a lot of clinical experience doesn't mean that you would be a good doctor. Likewise, having a lot of high stats doesn't mean that you would be a good doctor either, but at least you'll have a high chance of graduating and matching into good programs and also boosting the school's reputation. Stats are also easy to sort, and schools can easily rank thousands of applicants. They don't have time to fine comb and sift through 7000+ applications to look for someone with lower stats and lots of EC's.

I like to believe that everyone who is going to medical school has at least some compassion and empathy for others. Having little EC's doesn't mean you can't have compassion. There are plenty of jobs that are also clinical which doesn't require a certain high GPA and MCAT score. Unfortunately, being a doctor requires a lot of academic excellence.

Thanks. It was actually better than I expected. My undergrad gpas are 3.22/3.29, so hopefully cutoffs use that instead of the overall gpas. Last yr they were 3.16/3.13.

Are you serious? Unless you got a 5 on a MCAT section, how the heck can you think you're an underdog?
 
I see plenty of pretty competitive candidates on this list. Also, my ECs are pretty poor.

It is is reserved for those w/ less than a 24 MCAT or less than 3.25 sGPA or cGPA. It can be either of those particulars, or both. Additionally, I would consider those that have 6 or below within a subsection of the MCAT to be within the underdawg range as well.

You are not an underdog per the specifications of this thread. With a 3.5/3.5/30, you will have a chance at many IIs and will likely have a great cycle if you get all your stuff in on time. Being verified July 2nd puts you right on track to do just that. This is even with relatively weak ECs as you mentioned. My brother applied to DO schools with around those numbers and received 11 IIs out of 17 DO schools applied. He was straight out of undergrad and had regular ECs. You have a great chance everywhere, nice job and good luck!
