The Official "How Does This Schedule Look" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'll give it a try:

Sophomore Fall semester

Organic Lab (1)
Multivariable Calculus (4)
Physics (1 -auditing)
Introductory Latin (3) language requirement
Art in the City (3) core requirement
Philosophy (3) core requirement

Fall
Physics I (4)
Biochemistry (3)
Cell and molecular biology (4)
Service learning health (3)
ill also be working in a lab
Is this too much?

That can be a bit challenging, but that's definitely a strong versatile schedule if you can manage your time effectively.

No, you're fine. Good luck.

I hope someone can help. I spoke to an adviser about my schedule last week. She doesn't want me taking more than 14 or 15 units, but I'd love to take the MCAT before the end of 2014... I'm also not keen on spending an extra semester or two in school due to financial reasons. Anyway, here it goes (French major by the way):

Fall 2013
Ochem 1 (3)
Bio 2 w/ lab (5)
Physics 1 w/ lab (5)
French Pronunciation (3)
French Lit (3)

Physics would be taken at a CC since my university has a unit cap :/

I'm taking Bio 1 and Gen Chem 1 with three French courses now (I'm taking Gen Chem 2 over the summer). I have B's in both.

Genetics (4 cr)
Orgo 1 (4 cr)
Intro to IT (3 cr)
Collaborative writing (3 cr)
Peer instuctor education course for LA (3 cr)

Total: 17 cr

Plus five hours as an LA (learning assistant), four hours research, three hours hospital volunteering, 2.5 hours children's tutoring.

My question: should i take one more course?

Completely ignore your adviser regarding the maximum credit limit. That's absurd. Your schedule is a bit rough, but you can handle it if you can manage your time wisely.

I wouldn't do it. Genetics can be time-consuming and you also have a writing course.

IMO Genetics was much easier than my other Bio courses.

My friend wants to take the following schedule in the fall and I'm trying to dissuade her; is this schedule to rigorous :

Physics 1 with lab
Organic 1 with lab
A seminar course (once a week)
Genetics
Microbiology

I know people who are taking Physics and Orgo together; I personally couldn't do it. That, plus genetics and micro sounds too much, even if you do manage your time....unless your friend is a genius, I'd recommend dropping micro...genetics is probably more helpful than micro for MCAT anyways, although I don't know for certain since I haven't taken it...

Gonna be a rough sophomore fall semester:

Orgo 1 4 credits
Physics 1 with lab 5 credits
Genetics 3 credits
Spanish 2 (language req.) 4 credits
Health Policy and science of medicine 2 credits

18 credits total. i was gonna go for the coup de grace and add orgo lab (1 credit lab but the lab is 4 hours long) and make a it a 19 credit courseload, but i wanted to make it to senior year lol

Not saying it's impossible, but it'll be rough. It depends how rough your orgo and physics professors are. That with Genetics sounds rigorous, and if you're also doing other extra curriculars, I'd drop genetics and switch with a GER if you need to fulfill credits for that, like English or whatever applicable. You can do it, but it'll take a lot of your time, something not all of us can give up. Plus, you want to get your GPA up, so if you feel like you'll struggle with three science courses, just drop it. You can always take it later.

This is definitely a full load but manageable depending on how well your friend manages her time.

Fall 2013:
- Immunology
- Endocrinology
- Histology
- Abnormal Psychology
- Research Credits

I've been waiting for immuno and endo to be offered for a while now...

Fall of senior year, applying the following June:
Biochem (4)
Arabic 3 (4)
Immunology (2)
History GEC (3)
Total = 13

6-7 hr. tutoring/volunteering
roughly 2 hrs. free clinic volunteering
15hr in lab
MCAT studying starting in august and taking test in January. Part (about 4hr) of the tutoring/volunteering is as a physio TA which should be a nice for MCAT prep.

EDIT: can't believe i forgot this... other various "ECs" throughout every saturday... damn going to a big time college football school...

Three hardcore bio.... :scared: You can probably handle it, as I assume you're interested in all of the courses.

Fall 2013:
Pre-Calculus 2
General Chemistry 1
Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Biology
Introduction to Mechanical Engineering

Not sure if I should add on the engineering class.

Just thinking about majoring in engineering for a back up if I can't get into medical school.

I have a lot of friends who are engineering majors. They often tell people doing things like what your thinking about not to, because of how hard engineering is; even for people really interested in it.

I would pick a major you like and can do well in.

Yeah don't do that. Do engineering because you like it. Engineering is really time-consuming. I was initially a mechanical engineering major, but the workload was so time consuming, so I switched to physics. There are different ways to approach the same solution.

Thank you 🙂

It didn't sit well with my either, but I understood her reason. She said she'd rather I guarantee myself some A's than overload myself and not get A's. I think proper time management is the answer as well.

I agree and couldn't have said this better.

Cell Biology (4 credits)
Genetics (4 credits)
Trigonometry (4 credits)
Latin (5 credits)

Thoughts?

Thanks. I'm honestly looking forward to it. It'll definitely be my most laid back schedule class wise since i started undergrad.

This seems like a good balance between demanding bio classes and other classes. Of course this all depends on how comfortable you are with trig and Latin.

Sweet, thanks bud.

Physics I with lab (Calculus-Based) - 4 units
Organic Chem I with lab - 5 units
Cell and Molecular Bio with lab - 4 units

Possibly a research seminar. I have enough extra-curriculars that I'm happy to just take 13 units this semester; I have all my gen ed credits taken care of.

Working ~8 hours a week as a biology tutor
Working ~12 hours a week in a professor's lab
Officer of a club on campus (~20 hours a week when you count all the community service).

Sophomore, Fall

Organic Chem (3)
Organic Lab (1)
Physics (3)
Genetics (3)
French I (3)
Music ensemble (1)
Flute ensemble (1)
Flute lessons (1)
Woodwind quintet (1)

Thinking about taking world literature and microeconomics over the summer.
Any thoughts?

Mine for the Junior fall, I think I struck a good balance:

Organic 1 (4)
Physiology (3)
Historical Art Analysis (3)
Story/Poem Writing (3)
Sociology (3)
Research (3)

What do you guys think? Is it too light? I could possibly add Intro Neurobio...but I feel it may be too much since I am taking orgo for the first time.

That seems really time consuming. I'd probably take out genetics, or french (I find it harder than science courses lol). But then again, its up to your abilities.

Fall senior year:

Pchem II (quantum) 3 credits
Advanced Biochemistry 3 credits
Research 2 credits
Music History (I could teach this course in my sleep, but it's required for my minor 😳) 3 credits
Weightlifting 👍👍 1 credit (my goal is to be 115 pounds of solid muscle :naughty:

That's only 12 credits (my lightest load since middle school) but I am hoping for a number of interview invites (MSTP, so each interview will be 2-3 days of missed classes)
It's going to be a fun Fall 😀

Summer 2013
Bio II w. Lab 4cr

Fall 2013
Orgo I w. Lab 5cr
Physics I w. Lab 5cr
Molecular Biology and Biotechnology w. Lab 4cr

Summer biology sounds fine, but I would be sure you can't spread out those sciences in the Fall before diving into it unless you've handled a similar load before, particularly since Organic is on that lineup. I can't speak for Biotechnology, but I've also heard Molecular Biology can be fairly time consuming. Again though, Organic is a beast to itself, and you'll want to be able to give it 'special treatment' to do well in it in most cases (there are always a handful of people who take to it really well -- usually the same ones who did strikingly well in high school geometry, incidentally).

My schedule is on the fence depending on whether I decide to strike into Botany or English as a major, so here's both of the lineups. Leaning strongly toward English for various reasons while taking a Botany minor, but still entertaining the alternative just in case, though the biggest deterrent for Botany is the overwhelming workload I'd have to take on to tackle it in the next two years.

Summer:
Mycology (probably going to be canceled sadly)
18th Century British Literature (dropping this if Mycology is NOT canceled)
Fiction Writing

Fall, English:
General Zoology/L
General Physics/L
Playwriting
Milton (literature)
Critical Methods in Literature

Fall, Biology Botany track:
General Zoo/L
General Physics/L
Plant Physiology/L
Bioinformatics

Personally, English >>>> Botany, but either way, your schedule looks manageable.

Plants are the bee's knees, and I'm all over the Medicinal Botany elective coming up next Spring, but agreed, I'd rather take the time to sharpen other skills meanwhile. Thanks!

I'm taking calculus 2 this summer. It's a 6 week course, any thoughts? I have a 97% in Calc 1 so far. I will be somewhat well prepared heading into it.

Do some research on the professor first, and be certain you feel very comfortable in all your mathematical background. I did the same thing; pulled an A in Cal I and dove into Cal II over the summer, but the professor was reputedly very tough (a good 20% of the class comprised Engineering majors re-taking it). It was very rough, even with study. I don't mean to turn you off from the idea, but just be aware that Cal II is an entirely different beast than Cal I unless you're particularly math-inclined.

I absolutely love botany. I wish we had a mycology option out here - fungi are fabulous. All those symbiotic associations!!

Fall:

Ochem I 4 cr hr
History of Rock Music (online course) 4 cr hr

Winter:
Ochem II 4 cr hr
Physics I w/lab 5 cr hr
Intro to Ethics 4 cr hr

I work full-time right now but hopefully will drop down to working part time during next Fall/Winter semesters because I want to get some research experience in and maintain my hospital volunteering. So hopefully I will not have to work more than 30 hrs a week throughout the Fall/Winter semesters. I have asked before about adding Ochem lab to the Winter semester, but that could be pushing it with how much I work some weeks.

not looking forward to it

Yeah, that's definitely manageable, although it's bit difficult for your part-time student status. Carefully manage your time and you'll be good.

Physics 1 with lab
Organic 1 with lab
Calculus 2
Major Seminar (weekly)
Humanities course

Pretty straightforward and manageable. Good luck.

Here's mine:

Physics 1 + lab (5)
Physiology + lab (5)
Biochem of Human Diseases (3)
Intro to Stats (4)

I'm a junior, Bio major, starting a Statistics minor. Also, fall semester will be my first semester at a four-year university. I was thinking of dropping the biochem class, and trying to get a part-time job at a lab instead. Any thoughts?

Summer:
Psycology I
Statistics I
Writing 10
10 units

Also hopefully volunteering at a womens and children shelter. And starting my shadowing 😀

Fall:
Gen Chem II + Lab
Bio I + Lab
Calculus II
Psychology of Stereotype and Prejudice (hopefully)
17 units

In addition, I just got my first full time job on campus (as an RA). I also volunteer with children and I'll probably do 4 hours a week. I wanted to try and get some clinical volunteer experience but I'm not sure if I will be able to, hopefully on weekends. I have practice twice a week about 3 hours total (and competitions here and there). Lastly, I was going to see if I could get some experience working in a lab.

After writing it all out, it seems like it might me too much :scared: I have no clinical volunteer experience yet, and I don't want to stop working with the children because I have been doing it for around 3 months and its something I love so I hope that I will be able to do it for 3+ years eventually.

No, you're fine. If you need help in doing RA duties, let me know and I'll take your place. The other RAs know me well. I'm also good with children (which you should be happy 😉)
