The Official "How Does This Schedule Look" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Fall:
Biochem (4 credits)
Algebra-based Physics (5 credits)
Eukaryotic Pathogens (3 credits)*
Advanced Moral Philosophy (3 credits)*
Philosophy of Science (3 credits)
Abnormal Psychology (3 credits)
Honors Thesis credit (1 credit)

*denotes graduate-level class :/

I'm planning on working on my thesis about 15 hours/week. I also work 2 other jobs 8 hours/week each. Involvement with ECs will definitely be limited this semester.

You're fine.

You're a bio major!

Correction, was a bio major with a minor in mathematics. However I was also double majoring in Physics but by my senor year I decided to for go the double major.

I thought you were a business major. Your MDApps is a lie. 👎

I'll be a sophomore at a large public university--I went to CC for a year.

Principles of Micro Econ 4 credits
Natural Hazards and Disasters 3 credits
General Physics w/Calc 1 (lab, lecture, discussion) 4 credits
Intro Psych 4 credits
Beginning Swimming 1 credit
Seminar, careers in medicine 0 credits

I'll be volunteering 4hrs once every week at a university affiliated hospital.

I also plan to work 20 hrs/week.

As for me

General Microbiology
Chemistry I lec and lab
Geography
Fine Arts
Statistics
Calculus l

I am wondering if this is okay because my adviser suggests not taking calculus and statistics together because a lot of people find it difficult. I just need to know if this is doable with my other course load. Also I have already taken chemistry and Aced it (I actually really liked it and even tutored others)..it just didn't transfer to my current university. But yea I am rambling just want some opinions on the statistics and calculus thing along with my other courses also I work part time.

I found Intro Statistics to be a joke (ended up with a 100+ average). The material isn't difficult, as long as you can keep up with your assignments and put in a bit of study time.

Ahhh..what a relief. All I needed was a little assurance that one or the other would not be difficult with both being math courses. Thanks so much!

Sophomore, Fall

Zoology with Lab, 4
Intro to Research with Lab, 4
Brit Lit, 3
Lifetime Wellness, 2
Honors Class, 2
Required Mass, .5

I'm debating tacking on Advanced Stats I on there for 3 credits but it'd put me at full load. I can do it later, though. Math here has so many elective slots. |D

Intro to Research sounds super pointless, though. I'll go on the first day and see if I want to keep it. But I can trade the two if I don't.

Also, I'm going to try and get me some shadowing hours. Or a job. Preferably both, but I probably won't get them both and I'm okay with that.

Advanced Neurobiology
Systems Physiology
Behavioral Pharmacology
Health Psychology

This looks good. You should have time to have a part time job and etc.

Please include what year you are and term. Other than that this looks fine.

As somebody who took Organic in my first semester, I suggest that you hit the ground running. It won't be like General Chemistry and that's something to know in advance.

Cell Biology is called Cell Hell where I'm at; and it's with good reason. It's a hard class unless you know what you're getting into.

If you have a solid work ethic, it's possible. But you don't have to do this every semester, you know. College can be fun too.

If you can't juggle all of it, don't crash your GPA trying. You can get the ECs later. And please don't take three science classes every semester. You'll get plenty of that in med school. Good luck!

^ This would be my Fall Semester for my Senior year of undergrad. Also thank you for the input btw! I have been worried that my credit load has been on the light side. I have been taking difficult courses though. I just do not require many credits per semester since I am non traditional have will actually only need 6 credits my final semester after the above one. I will of course take at least 13. I am just working on taking the essential science courses right now.

The following is last year (Junior Year and my first year as a transfer student from community college)

Fall:
Fundamentals of Cell Biology
Fundamentals of Neuroscience
Medicinal Plants
Neuropsychology
Students in transition (1 credit)
= 13 credits

Spring:
Molecular Biology
Genetics
Introduction to Biochemistry
Physiological Psychology

I'm counting on it.

All those classes would be manageable, but graduate level physiology would be a waste of time. I know you're joking, but that's my perspective. I encountered a similar courseload before. It's doable, but I despise taking a bio course with this.

Yep, but a Math major here is only 33 hours and I already have 14.

Aww-Yeah-Meme-Rage-Face-On-a-T-Rex.jpg

I take it that abstract algebra and real analysis aren't requirements for your major?

Nope, I don't have to do real analysis. I don't think they offer it to UG and I'm not even sure if we have in our MS program because it's for Math education.

"Candidates for a BS in mathematics must complete, with a "C" average or better, an ITS programming course and a minimum of 33 semester hours in mathematics, with 18 of the semester hours at the 300 level or above and including Calculus III, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics, and Modern Abstract Algebra."

Calc III and Linear Algebra are 300 level? Darn, that's surprising.

You should take number theory, if it's available. That or complex analysis.

We do have number theory and I do intend to take it. 🙂

Lol Agent B my Calc II class had 13 people in it and we were the only section. And the Biochemistry people have to take it.

Another class that I'm super excited to take is History of Math. I think it'd be super cool.

Yeah History of Math is cool. And number theory is awesome.

Wait, is Calc III the multivariate class? Or the vector class (or both)?

Yep, Calc III for us is multivariate and vectors. ^^

I'm excited to take that class too. I used to think math was sort of dull but Calc I bit me with the math bug. 😀

IMO any class you don't have to go to much that's a free A is worth it. If 2 hrs/week can get you 3 credits of A, that's time better spent than 2 hrs/week pulling a hard class from A- to A in gpa terms. Plus depending on the dept, it might add to sGPA too.

Why would anyone who is an aspiring pre med want to take either of those courses?

Looks fine. Few questions, 1. What year are you, 2. Are you a neuroscience major?

I have a sort of side question here... I noticed some people having 13-14 credits per semester. 😕 My pre-med adviser told us that we absolutely need to have 16-18 credits every single semester if we want to look like serious applicants. (This is a lady who gets paid for the kids she can get into medical school.) My freshman fall semester I was in the hospital the first week and only had 14 credits to sort of help me recover. But aside from that I've had 16-18. (In fact, this semester I'm supposed to have 19... Just how it worked out.)

I'm just wondering. Because getting a 4.0 with 14 credits was a walk in the park. It's not quite a walk in the park with 18. 😏

Yes neuro major, I'm going to be a senior but graduating a semester late :/

Does it not look too rigorous? I have to bring up my sgpa

Well, you do have a lot of science classes, so it depends on how difficult the classes are... The first semester doesn't seem too bad since you're taking three, but the other two seem intense. At least you're taking the mcat after you're done with school.
I think if you focus and study hard, you can do it. But if you're worried, I'd modify the spring semester...maybe switch the English with a science? Idk, just a suggestion.

Well, at my school, we used to be on a 4 credit system, so the average was between 16-20. But now, they just changed it to 3 credits, so a lot of people have to take 5 classes to get 15, which is the number of credits you should at least have...so I guess it differs from school to school.
I've never taken more than 4 classes a semester; the most credits I've taken we're 17, and that was when I was on a 4 credit system. This semester, I'm taking 15, but still 4 classes because of lab credit. I considered taking another elective for my major, but my advisor said 15 was enough.
