Hi there,
I normally don't comment but as someone who attends IU and is about to graduate, I felt like I had to reply.
Sure on paper, in-state cheaper school always default option. I also had family around Indianapolis so I chose to stay. Now in my 4th year, I have realized a number of things. 4 years is a LONG TIME. Do not underestimate being happy where you end up both in location and school. This is paramount to your success, and being miserable will make school a struggle and your performance will suffer.
I can tell you that the predominate theme of Indiana University in general if you talk to many of my fellow classmates is that IU as an institution does not care about you as a person. When you come here, if you choose to do so, you are on your own. You are a stat sheet on paper. I thought this was normal because until recently I knew nothing about other institutions. Interviews for residency have given me a different impression which has been corroborated by fellow interviewees.
Will you thrive here? Sure. But it will be through your own volition. Will you feel you had a sense of community and support from your institution? Unlikely. It's a very "Us" (students) vs school mentality here.
