You never hear anyone making the case of gay divorce. Why is that?

I don't think domestic partnerships end in divorce. Quite frankly, I'm not sure how that works. I know DP laws in CA allow for visitation, benefits, etc to be extended to spouse. I'm not sure what the other partner gets when the partnership dissolves. I have an aunt that was partners with someone when they had an IVF baby. The partner is the one that carried to term, so when they split, my aunt was pretty much just a babysitter. It was weird. My aunt's with another partner now, but I don't think they got married during the window in CA.

My wife's supervisor just split with her same-sex partner of 19 years. My wife's supervisor is moving to Hawai'i and the three kids they had together are staying with her ex. Apparently she (my wife's boss) has no custody rights. That's probably the least recognized problem with not recognizing gay marriages.

Yeah, I think over time that the issue of kids may be what helps pull recognition of same-sex marriages into widespread acceptance. I know personally it is quite frustrating, watching my best friend and his partner start thinking about having kids, and the ridiculous and expensive hoops they'll have to jump through to do so, since Arkansas in its 'wisdom' decided that same-sex couples would certainly cause their adopted children to catch Teh Ghey and/or molest them constantly. So now they're looking at some sort of surrogate system, which is costly and still won't give one of them any sort of legal rights in relation to the child. These two are a pathology resident and a 3rd-year pharm student. I'm pretty sure they'd be able to provide a very good life for any kid lucky enough to get adopted by them. Especially considering the ****ty circumstances a lot of these kids are in now.

But 'OMG IF WE LET THOSE QUEERS GET MURRIED AND HAVE KIDS THEN NEXT THEY'LL BE WANTIN' TO MURRY LITTLE BOYS AND FORNICATIN' WITH GOATS AND SHEEP AND AMERICA WOULD COLLAPSE AND WE'D BE LIKE THOSE SOCIALIST LIBS IN YUROPE I BET THEY'D EVEN TRY TO TAKE MY GUNS AWAY OMG OMG OMG' etc.

1) Gay marriage killed the dinosaurs. That's a documentable fact.

2) Homosexuality is clearly contagious. It's a driving force of evolution. And there is no known cure.

3) Everyone knows gay people hate guns, and will do everything in their power to take them away from the people of this country, including the police and the military. Gays also love high taxes and all sorts of pointless, touch-feely liberal social programs.

4) The reason the divorce rate is so high is because so many men really want to marry other men. If they would just be happy with women, they would stop cheating on their wives.

5) It's somehow Obama's fault.

I have a guy friend that has a lot of gay friends, STRONGLY I mean STRONGLY supports gay marriages, and prefers anal sex over sex . However, he says that he is straight...is it possible??? I mean why will a straight person give a **** about gay marriages???

For the same reason a man would care one way or the other on abortion? For the same reason white people who didn't own slaves still wanted the right to own them? Because it just isn't fair to exclude some people and include others?

Although, the way you put it, your friend sounds a little iffy to me... maybe not 100% gay, but probably not 100% straight either.

Pretty much, yeah. I figure that in life a person needs a few things to feel strongly about, and I guess this is one of mine. I guess personally seeing my friends be unable to cement their stable, long-term relationship into something more 'official', or be unable to have the opportunity to raise healthy, well-adjusted kids puts a more human face on it for me.

Where the system really fails is when it comes to marital rights. I'm married, and I get health benefits for me, my wife, and our son through work. Many companies will offer benefits to same-sex partners, but premiums paid by these employees are taxable. That's one big difference. We've already discussed parental rights. You also run into inheritance issues if a member of the partnership dies. Unless an explicit will is created, the deceased's assets will pass to the closest living relative since his or her partner was never legally a spouse. Same-sex partners don't have the benefit of filing married jointly on their taxes, which can be a huge loss if one of them makes most of the family income (many deductions and credits phase out at a certain income level, but that level is usually doubled for married couples). I think if those rights could be extend to gay couples, there would be less of a to-do about the issue. It wouldn't solve everything, but it's a huge step. A lot of couples wouldn't care if they weren't legally married as long as they had the same rights as a married straight couple.

Actually, I think we could set up a system where a couple can become legally bound together without a marriage that would work for straight couples, too. To me, marriage is a religious rite, not a legal procedure. The law ought to recognize religious marriages as one approach to a "domestic partnership" or "shared household" status. If two adults want to commit to each other for life and share their house, children, and finances, they should be allowed to do so, whether or not their brand of religion calls it marriage. For many people, this would still be a traditional wedding in a church, but being joined together before God is pretty meaningless to an atheist. Why should we impose that structure on people with other belief systems?

Wow, that was a rabbit trail.

I figured that this is already how it is, or should be treated. It seems like most people who oppose it seem to have the idea that it would require churches to perform same-sex marriages, even if their creed held that it was wrong. It seems to me that standing in a church and saying "I do" will make you married in the eyes of God, but signing the marriage liscence is what does the trick in the eyes of the State of _________ and that's the one that counts, at least as far as the law of the land goes.

So people who say they are okay with 'civil unions' or 'domestic parternships' but don't think it should be called marriage, well.... that's kind of silly really.

Dang, those crazy '_____sdietblog.com' ads are getting more and more unrealistic. Now they're saying that they lost their fat gut in ONE WEEK by following this ONE SIMPLE RULE.

I bet it'll even whiten your teeth for less than $10! It was probably even discovered by a Christian Mom!

How have I managed to get through life without knowing these secrets?! :\

Jesus, this thread died again. Am I going to have to start having conversations with myself just to keep it going?

I don't know about that; it just needs something interesting to spark up some debate, then the thread will be jumping again.

But there's been some debate in this thread...it just seems to die quickly. Yeah, a conversation with myself would probably be the best route. At least I'll be entertained.

A conversation with yourself? You're nuts. And besides, it's not all about you, you narcissistic prick.

So how long do you think we can keep this up before a mod yells about it?

I don't know...this certainly isn't the most ridiculous thread to ever appear on the SDN forums. Although it's probably up there. I don't think the mods will have that much of a problem with it. It's just having some fun on a thread that's supposed to be lighthearted anyway, you know?

That's true...it is all in good fun. So are you all set to move for pharmacy school?

Oh yeah, I'm stoked about it. My and two friends of mine who got into RIT leased a house for a year. It's a pretty nice place, you should come check it out sometime.

Sounds good, I'll make sure to stop by and take a look when I'm around.

And what's up with this 'consciousness-based education' ad? I mean I guess it'd be relevant if they were gonna open a CoP or something....

.... they aren't, are they? Well, I suppose they've got the 'consciousness' part right, at least...

Sorry, got none of that.
Have another random pitcher.

;)
Hey it's an unofficial thread. Do what you want as long as it don't get reported. I don't think derailing an off-topic thread could possibly be against TOS as I don't think you can derail a thread that technically has no topic to begin with.

Anyone else having a hard time keeping the off-topic threads here and in the pharmacy forum straight???

Nah, this one seems pretty tame in comparison really. A lot of strong, vibrant personalities in that thread, whereas here we're all too busy posting WAMC or "Possum Hollow University COP c/o '13" threads.

Chapter 23 of R. Kelly's "Trapped In The Closet" has been released! Finally!

So I got to watch a lady get busted for trying to pass a forged script tonight... was pretty exciting. Had like 6 cops show up - must've been a slow night?

Anybody here watch True Blood?

I do! I <3 that show. :p I didn't catch the last episode though. My friend makes fun of me because I think the Twilight craze is dumb, and he said True Blood is Twilight for older people.
