My stats: 3.93 cummulative GPA, 31R MCAT (9V, 12PS, 10BS), small liberal arts college 2008 graduate. Should I go for high-tier schools?

So I just got my MCAT scores back, and not too happy - 11B, 11V, 7PS
My science GPA is 3.53, overall 3.63

I'm a nontraditional - I'm 3 years out of college at this point, having done research and clinical experience. Resident of CT.

I have outstanding research (multiple publications) and clinical experience (5 years direct medical contact with patients) and multiple shadowing, volunteering, scientific presentations, and great LORs from medical directors.

Should I not apply this cycle in order to retake the MCAT later on? Or should I give it a go? That 7 is killing me. On practice tests I got an 8 or 9 consistently.

Total GPA 3.42
BCPM GPA 3.61
MCAT 33 Q

First two semesters were a mess, F's and C's dragged my total GPA down. Took several years off, had another career, unrelated to health. All A's and B's since I went back to school.

Very strong extracurricular activity; great job working closely with a MD-Phd doing research. Nothing published. Shadow her regularly on her MD activities. Shadow an ER doc 1X a month for a 12 hr. shift. Volunteer as a patient-family-surgeon liaison at a very well respected hospital. More.

I am 29. Previous career was very hands on, high pressure, high stress.

I have a pretty interesting story. Can I get some interviews to tell it?

You can shoot for a couple of high-tier schools, but make sure you spread things out a bit too. One thing that you need to be aware of is with any small liberal arts school that is not too well known, adcoms aren't sure if there is grade inflation. Your 3.93 is great and your MCAT backs it up to some degree, just be aware of that bias though when you apply.

Hey everybody,

MDapplicants

Just gauging my chances.

Major: Engineering
BCPM: 3.85
Overall: 3.82
Undergraduate Institution: "Lower" UC

Got a 3.2 1st quarter, 3.6 second. It has been pretty much 4.0s since then (with a 3.92 and a 3.75 somewhere in there).

Activities: Tau Beta Pi Secretary, clinical volunteering with position on the leadership team, research in a bioengineering lab for about 1 year (no pub yet), a couple of research fellowships this summer (looks like I'm a workaholic!)
Ethnicity: East-Asian (makes a difference!?)

MCAT: 13PS, 11V, 12BS, R

Schools I want to apply to:

All U of California schools (does Irvine require stats? I AP'd out of it.)
Loma Linda
Stanford
Hopkins
Harvard
NYU
NYMC
Rosalind Franklin
Boston U

Where else should I apply? Do I have a chance at the reach schools? What about if I wasn't Asian?

Have you thought of any safety schools (besides NYMC, I think)? Even though you have great stats- GPA, MCAT, activities, etc - all your schools are pretty hard to get into. You never know how you might do at intervies.

overall GPA: 3.87
BCPM: 3.91
MCAT - registered to take on July 13
2 quarters of research in Otolaryngology Lab.
1 year of volunteering in the ER(~ +100 hours)
1 year(3 quarters) of symphonic band/concert band

I am kind of worried because I have not applied yet, and still waiting to take July MCAT. I am not too confident about the MCAT either, since I only have 1 month to study and my diagnostic test score was low(below 30). I will have the MCAT score back probably in August.

I realize that I am a little behind in schedule for applying than most of you guys, but how much would this affect the chance of being admitted to good programs? Also I wonder what should be a minimum MCAT score on the July MCAT in order to be competitive. If I don't do so well in July MCAT, I will probably retake it for August - ouch, wouldn't this be too late?

What schools should I apply? University of Washington is one that I am definately thinking of applying, since this is instate and also where I am doing my undergrad at.

Appreciate any advice

3.92 GPA
Slightly lower BCPM GPA - I'd guess 3.85ish - haven't calculated it yet as i'm not quite ready to submit primary app.

MCAT: (Phys,Verb,Bio,Writing) 41S - 13/13/15/S

Weak Extracurriculars:
Done ER volunteering since february - approx 6 hrs a week. Trying to shadow physicians through the hospital. Getting through red tape at the moment.

Research Lab since august- I have a project but no publications or anything big on the horizon.

Former policy debater in high school - i kinda help out my old high school team by judging for them etc. - about 100 hrs/yr

SO ...
What are my chances and where should I apply?

Anywhere you like. However, I think people like you should have already picked up a MSAR so you could have come to the same conclusion.

Med schools don't want to hear about anything in high school unless you've continued it in college.

I'd like some suggestions on more mid-tier schools to apply to as well as input on how many more to add. I'm looking to add 10-15 more schools to my list total, including more reach schools that i have in mind. I'm interested in international health and like urban areas, but I'm flexible.

-intern for non-profit org, advocacy work with poverty issues (2 summers)
-significant involvement and leadership in human rights & community service student orgs, including trips to do volunteer work
-working in industry as an engineer on a health-impacting product while applying

If anyone could glance at my situation and tell me what to do/where to apply if all, I would appreciate it.
MCAT: PS-10, VR-8, BS-10, WS-M total of 28M
GPA: 3.8
I have some ECs, but nothing super original.

My MCAT is a little low I think, any suggestions on schools or whether or not I should retake MCAT would be great!

2.84 gpa
either 2.65 or 2.7 science gpa
MCAT- taking in september, currently in Kaplan course 2 nights a week

applying for a 1year SMP @ BU or TUFTS..still waiting to hear if I am in

Work full time as a CRA (clinical research associate) at the mass general cancer center. there is no patient interation involved, as I work mainly with protocols, patient files and lab data, data management, the IRB and other regulatory work. occasionally the oncologists ask us to help with their posters for presentations at ASCO etc..

I also work part time as a personal trainer (ACSM certified) and soon a nutrition consultant.

I'm enrolled in a pre-med volunteer program of 6 months, but I havent been able to make it to my first two shifts because of work related issues (either my part time job or full time job). This program includes a letter of reccomendation and shadowing a doc in the dept you are placed in at the end of the 6 months.
As of now it is really hard to fit in these 3-6 hours a week working 60 hours a week and having the Kaplan course and keeping up with that homework....how much would not volunteering hurt me? Or should I hold off volunteering until the MCATs are taken?

Is clinical research enough for clinical experience? Could my personal training experience count as "patient interaction?
Essentially, I meet a new client, perform a series of evaluations on them, from fitness assessments to body fat% and measurements, then I design a program based on their imbalances and individual needs.

i appreciate the feedback!

Hey guys, well I posed on here a while ago asking about my chances, but that was pre-MCAT. I finally got my scores back today, and I am pretty happy, so here goes. My final score was PS:13 / V: 8 / BS: 13, for a overal 34 R. I was hoping that maybe my writing score would somewhat make up for the verbal? Anyone know anything about that? Just looking for a little advice, most of my stats are under my http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?myid=07734

I can speak Spanish pretty well, but I wouldn't say completely fluently.

I plan on applying everywhere in Texas only right now, including Baylor.

Thanks!

Hello,

I am a re-applicant for this current cycle (to enter in 2008). I have a quick question.

During my first application cycle, I was denied admission to all schools I applied to. Upon receiving those decisions, I decided to meet with an ADCOM member of my state medical school as to how I could improve my application. He gave me very specific advice (i.e. take these certain science classes, re-take MCAT, other things).

Since that time, I have done everything he has recommended in a post-bac setting (making A's in all science classes he recommended I take, improving my MCAT from a 28 to a 33, gaining more shadowing and volunteer experience).

My question is, how favorably will the committee look at the fact that I re-committed myself, and did everything they asked me to do? Will the committee look at my application in a different way, or will my numbers still be compared to every applicant?

I believe I have shown my state school that they are the school I am most interested in attending, and am wondering if they see this in addition to my improvements, that I would be interviewed earlier in the application cycle? Thank you very much.

I just received a 30Q on my MCAT. VS-9 BS-11 PS-10
GPA: 3.79 Major GPA (Chemistry): 3.76 Science GPA: ~3.69
Some of my ECS: One semester of undergrad research, 100+ hours volunteering in a children's hospital, volunteerwork at a veteran's hospital during high school, 3 semesters of TAing a gen chem lab, American Chemical Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma (honors frat), The Original (a campus magazine), Dean's List all semesters, Chemistry award, worked as a lifeguard for 6 years, worked as a mentor for urban youth
Undergrad: University of Pittsburgh
Homestate: Pennsylvania

Here are the schools I am thinking of applying to:
University of Pittsburgh (first choice)
Penn State
Jefferson
Temple
Brown
WVU
Case Western
Boston U
Tufts
University of Maryland

I am probably not a strong enough candidate for Pitt but i'm going to apply anyhow. I have heard Pitt uses that formula: MCAt + GPA x 10 = 70 so if this is the case, i won't even get a secondary app. What would you say my chances of getting into pitt or the other schools is? Also, would you recommend any other northeast schools to apply to? Thank you so much!

hi

how can i improve my chances of being admitted to medical school?

my current resume:
3.43 bcpm
3.51 overall
mcat: 10/11/11/Q

i have a strong upward trend, double majoring in biochemistry/molecular biology. however, i have a "F" and a "D" on my summer school transcript at a community college ( i dropped after withdraw was accepted....i thought i could beat the system and not have to send that transcript in and act as if it never happened...however later i find out that everything is sent, my bad) i have much extracurricular activities with over 200 hrs of volunteer combined with shadowing, research, clubs activities and what not.

how can i make myself a more appealing applicant? i have a feeling i will get not too many interviews due to my incompetence with the whole summer school dilemma, im thinking of applying to a few post bacc as well to help me just incase..what do you suggest i do?

HI, not sure how this thread works since I don't see any of the original posts, but here's my situation

Graduated in may, 3.77overall, 3.75 science GPA
2 years of research at a oncampus molecular genetics lab, pure research in S. pombe, 25/hrs wk during semister, 35/hrs during summer, no publication yet, but should have one before the end of the year.
1 year volunteering at ED, no physican shadowing though
Asian Student organization, no leadership position
MCAT: unknown, took it on the 15ths, averaged 38ish(P14, V11, B13) for practice exams, but the verbal was much harder than expected, probably cause I was up for 24hrs before the fact. On the other hand, both science sections were much easier than expected....so who knows

I think my grades are alright, and hopefully the MCAT will be okay too, but my health related experiences is a bit lack. A bit of this has to do with the fact that I had to spend a lot of my free time at home helping out the family business, and I had to make time for paid work before volunteering. I'm wondering if I should put off applying for another year or go right ahead now...I really want to apply to Umass Med EDP, but dunno if its worth it. If I work for another year, I'd have more volunteering, and probably some shadowing or clinical obs. Additionally, I should get more LOD and my paper should finally get published somewhere.

I've asked this before on other threads, but I was hoping to get new insight.

What do you think a medical school admissions committee's reaction would be when they read my stats?

2.51 GPA first 2 years as an accounting major at school #1
3.9 GPA last 2 years as a microbiology major at school #2
3.2 cumulative GPA
34 MCAT (11P, 12B, 11V)

shadowing
work in a genetics lab
microbiology research
volunteer at a hospital
job at Big 4 accounting firm w/ full time job offer

just wanting some new insight since I am a weird one 🙂

Dear SDN Mentors,

I am depressed because I feel like I am losing the number's game. I only have a 3.39 GPA (~3.0 BCMP), and I got a pretty sad and embarrassing score on my 1st MCAT (7P, 6V, 9B) earlier this year after putting a lot of time and effort studying for it (~2.5 months full time and scoring 27+ on practice exams). In hindsidght, I was really stressed during the exam and regret not voiding it (I don't know what I was thinking after getting off that train-wreck of an exam!) I took the exam again on 6/15, but I still feel like I might have not blown it out of the water (again, did not void). I have a pretty strong feeling that I may have to take it a 3rd time which will really slaughter my chances of admissions for 2008. It's so hard to be competitive!!!

I've been out of school for 2 years now. After having spent ~248+ hours doing clinical volunteering while holding my full time job at a pharmaceutical company last year, I decided that an a career in medicine as a doctor is really interesting and enjoyable, something that I can foresee myself doing for the rest of my life.

Anyhow, this is where I come from. Any advice for such a bleak circumstance would immensely be appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry, schools for the most part ignore writing, so it doesn't really make up for verbal (writing is too subjective anyhow). Looking at the MSAR, schools don't screen for 8s too often, and you're 13s in other sections make it so you're still quite competitive. All TX schools are open to you, hell even a chance at the top 25. Buy an MSAR, do som searching on schools, then send in your app!

I'm a little worried because I go to a state school--it doesn't have the rep that Emory, Ga Tech, et cetera do. Anyone care to take a look at my page and tell me if you think it will put a damper on my applications?

http://www.mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=08197

Thanks, guys and gals. 👍

It shouldn't make ANY difference at all where you went to school. Your 14 14 14 MCAT resoundingly puts away any doubt an adcomm might have as to your education and abilities. Someone with a 4.0 from an unknown or not prestigious school who got sub-30 on the MCAT would call some question to a 4.0 overall gpa from their undergrad. But you got a 4.0 overall gpa AND a 42 on the MCAT! I wouldn't think twice about worrying where you went to school. You're golden (and have the ECs to back it up!).

I'm a non-trad looking to apply for 2008. Need help in deciding which and how many schools to apply to.

Bachelor's of Science in Microbiology, Univ of Texas
My cum undergrad GPA is 3.6. BCPM GPA around 3.3.
Master of Science in Public Health, Tulane, with GPA 3.95.
MCAT: 9 VR, 12 PS, 13 BS, so a 34 N

I'm also a returned Peace Corps volunteer. I worked as a health educator in Africa for about 2 years.

Played French horn in undergrad in marching band, etc.

This list so far is:

Baylor
Drexel
Jefferson
Albany
Rochester
Ohio State
George Washington
Georgetown
Temple
Tulane
Rosalind Franklin
Northwestern
Loyola
UVa
Yale
UTSA
UTHouston
UTSouthwestern
UTMB Galveston

Thoughts? Advice?

hi all here are my stats.
i've been out of school for 1 year now and working at a major pharma company.

science GPA 3.08
cum GPA 3.22
from a top 10 ivy school as a dual science major

MCAT: 34M (10VR, 12PS, 12BS)

I volunteered at a hospital for a short time ~ 5 months
i've worked in a research lab during school ~3 years where I was put into a publication for nature med (not a primary author)

also, i just recently heard of the lizzy score thing, where do you go to find schools based on that score? and how exactly do you calculate it?
thanks!

hey, thanks for those who left responses on my profile 😀
I've made a few changes on the list, and am wondering if this list seems alright with my stats and profile....thank you 🙂

MDapplicants

Just gauging my chances.

Schools I want to apply to:

Where else should I apply? Do I have a chance at the reach schools? What about if I wasn't Asian?

Ah, sorry for bump, but anyone got any last minute ideas before I submit? I have Drexel, MCW added.

is it a waste of time/money to apply to ucsf/ucsd when you're not in state in ca?

i have 4.0 and 12/12/10 mcat and good ec's and just wanted to get some opinions on this. thanks 🙂

The MSAR shows that people DO get into UCSF from out of state, so go for it, if you really do want to go.

Would anyone be willing to comment on my chances?

http://mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?myid=8205

Thanks in advance!

Pretty solid! I think you'll have a good chance at these schools. The only comment I have is to make sure those state schools in the Southeast accept quite a few out-of-staters. I don't have the new MSAR or I'd look it up...

And looks like we're applying to a bunch of the same places :luck:👍

Thanks for the response. I know that MUSC and Medical College of GA are pretty cold to out-of-staters, but I grew up in Charleston and really want to return. I know its a long shot, but I'm really interested in trying to get in there. More realistically, I think I have a better shot at private schools of similar caliber like GW and Georgetown, or VCU which accepts plenty of out-of-staters.

Does anyone else have any insight on this?

Any comments would be appreciated!

FYI: I'm a city girl so I'd like to stay in the vicinity of a large one if possible. I also have a lot of reaches so any advice on which one's I should scrap would be helpful (also, other mid-levels and safeties)! Thanks guys.

I just got my MCAT score and am a little disappointed with my 30-O. My EC's are above average and have a BCPM of 3.73. If you could take a look at my application and give me some feedback about the schools I've applied to and any possible suggestions on other schools that would be good to apply to, i'd appreciate it. Also, do you think I should retake the MCAT?

thanks.

The latest is that the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Puerto Rico has been granted accreditation by the LCME. There is still time to aplly for the remaining positions Ive been told...

Got a 3.65 overall, a 3.71 BCPM from berkeley

1year+2 summer research

going to take MCAT soon. (aiming for 35+)

should I apply? what's a threadshold safe MCAT score? Should I take time off to research at UCSF? (2 years?) Or say forget that and go for it?

I'm in Canada, which doesn't help. I probably don't have a hope here, but I'm looking at the US and other out-of country schools (esp. Australia as I wouldn't mind staying there after I finish).

Anyway, I'm running about a 3.5 GPA (3.3, 3.6, 3.5 1st, 2nd and 3rd years) in specialization biochemistry, 4 science courses per semester, often with labs.

My MCAT was a glorious (to me, anyway) 39P (13/13/13)

My main ECs are Taekwondo (7 years 2 nights/week), Whitewater kayaking (University club, working on getting on the exec running the website), Big Brothers (volunteer)

I work two jobs at the moment. Full time in a lab doing vision research as a summer student (have worked ft there last summer as well and as a casual for a couple years) and another 16 hours per week of night-shift in environmental services at the hospital (Mostly dealing with what patients left behind, rather than direct patient work).

I'm also getting married in about a month. I don't know if schools consider this, but a large chunk of my (remaining) time is spent with my fiancee.

I'd like to get in in Canada, but the US would be pretty good still. If neither of those pans out then I'm off to Australia. I'm really not picky about which specific school I go to.

Any suggestions on where I should apply and what my chances might be?

Hi everyone, I have been reading this forum for awhile, you are all so helpful and considerate! 😀 I hope that someone can give me some advice, because I have a semi-strange case of a low MCAT versus my other credentials.

I just got my MCAT scores, 1st time taking it. I don't think I will retake it, because I don't want to push back the application process, and I'm not confident that I can do a ton better... but retaking is indeed an option for me.
28S : 10 verbal / 9 bio / 9 physical

I go to the University of Florida. My GPA is 3.84, my science GPA is somewhere between 3.69-3.79 (not sure exactly which courses go in that calculation). I am a Biochem & Molecular Bio major.

I have excellent extracurriculars (music minor), have done lots of service work (alternative breaks leader on campus), have a lot of research experience (3 years at UF, plus I am doing a summer research program at MD Anderson in TX as we speak), and although I haven't done much shadowing, I did work with an MD visiting the homeless and handing out medical advice/minor first aid.

SO... where to apply? I am definitely applying to all of the FL schools, but I really want to go out of state. I have chosen mostly private schools, and excluded the big ivys and such. My list includes schools like Drexel, NYMC, Boston U, U of Illinois, Albert Einstein... if you get my drift. I would MOST of all love to end up in NYC for med school.

So what are my chances? Is that 28S MCAT going to hold me back significantly? Thanks in advance 😳
