please help me get rid of 3-5 schools

either read below or http://mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?myid=7893

Application Year: 2008
Homestate: CA
Undergrad: TOP UC school
MCAT Score: VR 10, PS 13, BS 13, S
BCPM GPA: 3.70
Overall GPA: 3.47

Brief Profile:
My grades were pretty poor 1st-2nd year of college because of family issues/no motivation etc... for instance... my first 2 years of college GPA ~ 3.1 same with BCPM
3rd and 4th year ~ 3.9+ both cumulative and BCPM

My decision to pursue medicine did not start until 3rd year of college and really did not manifest until my first quarter of my last year of college. I've only gotten one B+ and the rest A to A+'s in all my subsequent classes since my 2nd year of college.

My late decision shows most heavily in my EC's, many of which are not medicine related.

EC's:

Research (no publications)
Volunteering at a Hospital (at the time of application probably only 70-80 or so hours)
Habitat for Humanity
Photography club
Piano Club
Snorkeling club
Assistant Coached a youth basketball team
Biology TA
Internships in different engineering fields

nothing too spectacular.

Any and all feedback would be appreciated; for example, I'm considering adding a couple more 'safety' mid-level schools and would love some advice on schools that people think would be a good fit for my background.

I may be wrong, but other than six weeks of shadowing, you don't have any hands-on clinical experience (i.e., direct patient contact). Your stats are great, but if I were you I'd start volunteering at a clinic/hospital with some direct patient interaction asap so you can either update schools with that info, or mention it during interviews. Otherwise, your app looks stellar. I'm sure you'll get in somewhere regardless, but doing some clinical work/volunteering would round out your application to a perfect 10 and increase your appeal to adcomms. If you want to add a couple of mid-level/safety schools, perhaps narrow it down by geography/cities you'd like to live in. Good luck.

Hey,

I'm a senior at a top University of California school. My MCAT score is 35R, with the average EC's, a year of research with no pubs.

I just remembered today that I took 3 math classes (more of my parents' will although it was mine for doing so poorly) in summer school at a community college when i was 12-13 years old. Unfortunately, i earned 2 D's and a C. To make matters worse, those credits were in semester hours and my university is on the quarter system

Ultimately it brought down my BCPM gpa from a 3.73 -> 3.4 and my cumulative GPA 3.40 -> 3.21. I am devastated and really do not know what to do at this point. I never though something from almost 10 years ago was going to come around and kick me in the butt. To add injury... to well, injury, I am a California resident. Any advice would be greatly, GREATLY appreciated.

I decided to jump on the bandwagon and make an mdapplicants profile. Any and all comments would be appreciated, either here or on the profile itself. Thanks 🙂

Looks pretty. If I was you, I would apply to a few more schools. But... if anybody could get in with just a few schools, I think you stand an excellent chance.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice! Which schools do would you suggest? Easier ones? Harder? Any specifics in mind? 🙂

Hi Everyone,
I'm planning on taking September MCAT. Took mcat twice : 1ST MCAT = 18M = 8ps 6bs 4v, 2ND MCAT = 16M = 8ps 6bs, 2v. I was actually scoring in range of 27-30 on the practice mcat exams the second time around..And I def would not have taken the second one if I wasn't scoring in that range at least. Anyway, when the big day came, I I freaked out + lost all confidence and ended up doing worse than my first try. 🙁 i know that I know all my material. I think I knew my material the first time around as well.. Just need to take control of my stressing out and lack of confidence.

I want to try again in Sept of this yr.. i'm working on controlling my nervousness.. Hopefully if i at least score in the 27-30 range, then will med schools take me (knowing that this is my 3rd time around)? Also, I really want to apply in the 2008 cycle but not sure if it's a good idea. If i do apply, then my application will be late since they'll have to wait till my sept scores come in. Is it worth a shot? Will med schools reject me based on my old scores (without waiting for my new scores to come in)? Should I just forget applying this yr? Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated. More of my stats is in the link below.

gpa: 3.93
BCPM: 3.85

MCAT: PS-7 V-9 B-10

Any chance of getting into an allopathic school? Do most schools have a cutoff of at least an 8 per section? Thanks

Hi,

I have about 27 medschools that I'm applying right now...and I'm trying to cut down.

I was wondering, where should I be looking at?

40R MCAT 14BS 13PS 13VR
graduating from ivy league undergrad in 2008
3.45 gpa genetics major

EC: 4 years research in immunology, materials engineering and atherosclerosis, began biochemistry research when I was 14, published paper at 15
founded international sorority chapter
KS free clinic medical assistant for many months, shadowing
worked in china at a hospital
Miss New Hampshire, placed 4th at the national program, platform is on advancing women in the sciences
Placed 2nd RU at teen usa program
Miss Asian America state finalist, competing in 2008
Miss USA state finalist
Model for a clothing line

i'm 19 now, but I'm a rising senior. I hope that doesn't make admissions all wary.

I'd say you should be looking at top schools. Your app is really solid all-around! And add in the pageant stuff and all that you've accomplished at such a young age, and I think you'll have a surefire reason to be invited for interviews. I'd apply to all the top tier schools that you're interested in and of course a few mid-range safety schools. :luck:👍

wow this is like a perfect candidate..

aw thanks guys. I feel a lot better. I think I'm gonna cut it down to 25. we'll see how it goes. I was kinda freaked out because my gpa is lower than what is normally the mean, but kaplan said they did some grade conversion thing for schools.

Does anyone know of any schools that like the random unique pageant stuff? My parents are both doctors, and my dad who is on admissions at a med school said that some people will like it, but some people might regard it as superficial or whatnot. I only started doing it in college because I was recruited for modeling and I really didn't want to fit into the whole asian people can only do science and nothing else thing.

Please help. I want to trim down my list of schools and maybe add schools that are more receptive to out of state students, if I'm from California. I have 28~29 schools on my list but the thought of the bill after secondaries, even after I get screened is killing me. I know since I'm in CA, I have to keep the number of schools high because I can't depend on state schools, but .hit... How can they really charge that much, when they know the people that are applying are flat broke? Bastards. Any help is much appreciated.

Drop BostonU and GWU. These are schools with lower averages than your stats, and lower than typical accepted students. They are often viewed as "safety schools" and they receive 10,000+ apps every year. They may dog you for your high stats.

However, I interviewed at GW and actually liked it quite a bit better than Georgetown.

I did get an A in calc based physics both semesters and an A- in both semesters of general chemistry. I was planning on applying this application cycle. I guess I could retake in July and just focus on physics with a little bio review. Could I submit my apps, not check off that I was going to retake them, and then send them in later only if they are better scores??? Ugh, but the thought of having to study all over again for them makes me want to cry....I don't know....That's awesome you got your ps score up 6pts! did you study for months or a few weeks for the retake?

I studied for about a month. Also, when I decided to retake I was thinking about MD/PhD, so it kept my options open. I don't think you can decide against sending later scores, but I'm not exactly sure how that works.

anyone have any input on my chances? 🙁 i'm retaking this exam just not sure if i should take the risk of applying this yr and tell med schools to wait for my scores.

I would like some feedback about my list. It would be greatly appreciated. So here is copy of profile mdapplicant.com....

Please any comments about the schools!! My MCATs really suck, so if anyone has any suggestions about some MD schools that are reasonable (if thats even possible with my stats). Thanks. I plan to retake this will be my second time...but worst case scenerio lets assume I'm stuck with a 26 MCAT.

Nothing. It's just that you've probably accomplished more in your first five years of life than all my 24 combined. I don't have anything to offer in terms of which schools are more receptive to young applicants or pagent hopefuls, but with all your accomplishments, I'm wondering if they really care. Best of luck.

Any feedback on my chances would be appreciated...

I'm going to be a junior and I will be taking the MCAT pretty soon...

GPA: 3.9
Volunteering since last october abt 3 hrs a week for the most part (at a hospice if that matters)
Plenty of research experience (since last summer and throughout the school year in biochemistry (working with a grad. student earlier, but now im on an independent project)
Leadership experience teaching martial arts (still doing it)
Shadowing a doctor this summer and possible more during the school year

As for medschools, im looking at UC schools, Johns Hopkins (acceptance rates are low I know), and some schools in the midwest (not too sure on these).

Thats about it. Any suggestions on improvement would be appreciated.

Graduating 2008.
Current GPA: BCPM 3.23, Total 3.31 at Prestigious University
MCAT (past April): 14Bio 14 Phys 13Verbal T Writing = 41T (99.9 percentile!)
EC: Some athletics & art clubs, traveled abroad, tutoring, lab assistant (no papers). No real clinical experience.
I think LOR are decent, nothing special.
Still writing PS.

What do you think? I'd appreciate any advice, having just realized the value of SDN! 🙂

I think your mcats will open up a lot doors for you, and if your school is in the top ten, I dont think you'll have to worry much about gpa.

Are you Chinese? If you participate (or qualify to be) in the miss USA pageant, you will automatically get accepted to med schools 😀

yep.

med school apps first. will tackle swimsuit after. i feel as though that might be harder. I don't know if I'm gonna compete in the Miss USA level this year even though I am a finalist. Hopefully med schools will give me interviews and the competition is around the same time as interview season, so we'll see how it goes. Theres always next year for competing 😛

Sorry to out you missusahopeful, but it's impossible you got a 41 on the MCAT seeing as you HAVEN'T EVEN TAKEN IT YET!

Sorry to out you missusahopeful, but it's impossible you got a 41 on the MCAT seeing as you HAVEN'T EVEN TAKEN IT YET!

Come now, what?! Explain yo'self!

Missusahopeful though, if just fifty out of 150 million females are (potentially) competing for THE Miss USA pageant and 17,360 out of 69,000 are (statistically) competing for allopathic medical school, then I would say you have an excellent chance compared to what you might be used to 😉.

Even though- stay humble as I you apply to medical schools... It sounds like you are holding a very good chance at acceptance to a number of places you'd like to go. BUT I believe comparing the two competitions is treading on thin ice. Proceed with modesty and I'm sure you'll find yourself with more than enough options.

I am acquainted with missusahopeful, and know for a fact that she is taking the MCAT this month. Goes to show you should take everything on SDN with a grain of salt! <sigh>

missusahopeful, please don't count on scoring as high as 40. The average MCAT score for someone with your GPA from our school is 33.

Use your PS to explain how participating in pageants makes you a good candidate for med school, and why you chose pageantry to advance women in science instead of other volunteer-based avenues. Your grades and other ECs are standard, so you're going to have to milk this one for all it's worth. And yes, you'd better hope to kill the MCAT to compensate for your low GPA! Good luck.

wowzaa,

i have no idea who you are, but if you have a problem with me for some reason or another then you can email me at my real email. If you don't know it, then we all know whose the odd one here. There are 26,000 people in these forums, if I don't know who you are, then why do you think you know who I am? If you do, then stop asking about me, thats creepy, because I'm pretty sure I don't talk about you.

i'd appreciate it if anyone give me feedback on my mdapplicants profile. i've already submitted AMCAS, but i'm not sure if it's worth filling out secondaries for all the schools. thanks!

Oh cut it out honey, don't try to pass this situation off as a "omg-i-have-a-creepy-stalker-on-SDN" deal.

Of course I know who you are; how many Asian Miss New Hampshires can one school produce? There are tons of Dartmouth students on these forums, you want to be careful about providing identifying information (or about fabricating information, for that matter).

I do not have a problem with you, and I haven't "asked about you" in this thread. I'm simply annoyed that you made up your MCAT score when you are yet to take the test.

It's not that big a deal, and I really hope you score as high on the real thing. I'm sorry I brought it up in the first place; I was just shocked by your audacity and felt compelled to respond. This has served as a reality check for me, and that's all I'm going to say on the matter. Good luck on your upcoming test date.

a) I have been scoring that high on the practice tests because I have been studying the last 3 months for my mcats.

b) I just wanted to know if a high mcat score would help a lower gpa and still get into great schools along with my other ECS

c) this is not a big deal. I am not hurting anyone else.

and you totally made it seem like some huge moral crisis. If you didn't say anything, then people would just look at it, say ok, great and go on to the next person. Yeah it's ok, I understand, you're studying at night, stressed out, and overreact. This is the internet dude. It's too bad that article came out, now I have no anominity even in the www. I'm not saying I have some creepy stalker, I'm just surprised our school is so damn small now that everyone knows when the heck they are taking the mcats. I think the premedness just makes everyone crazy. let's go play pong and call it a night. k?

I would like to just contribute this:

NEW HAMPSHIRE ROCKS

Have a nice day.

EDIT: I can't speak for the parts that are more than an hour from Boston and 20 minutes from the beach. Though, mountains are nice aren't they?

a) I have been scoring that high on the practice tests because I have been studying the last 3 months for my mcats.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news (bears), but there is a touch of luck on scoring above >12 in any section of the MCAT. Counting on scoring 40 is never a good thing. Regardless, I hope you do, do well, and hope that you get into the school of your choice.

God knows the ugly level needs to be brought up at med schools (guys and girls). 🙂

p.s. i'm half sarcastic.

http://mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?id=8114

So I realize that this list of schools that I'm applying to is pretty narrow. I'm not being cocky, I'm completely realistic about this, I just also think I'll be a much stronger applicant if I were to apply again next year (and if I don't get in this year, I would apply more widely).

Is this a bad strategy? Would I be at a disadvantage as a re-applicant next year if I don't get in this year?

Thanks!!!

Your numbers are tops for all the schools you listed, but I think you should broaden your base just a little bit. It's completely possible, especially with your application to get in as a re-applicant. I think even the best of schools look at an applicant twice. A third time is discouraged for some of the better ones but unless you have some serious grievance which is not listed than I think you'll be fine the second time around. But this is a crazy process and schools want to see some kind of improvement in the year after your rejection. Why go through all that hard work (and MONEY!) when it's completely possible that you will get in this time around? Instead of the top 10 medical schools how about considering top 25 or something? I swear your talents won't be wasted if you go to one of those.

I'm about to apply through AMCAS and was wondering if they require photos like TMDSAS. If so, how many?

Hi, I need some imputs for the school list!
http://mdapplicants.com/viewprofile.php?myid=8119

Oh, I am a Canadian citizen, by the way. Thank you 😀

Hey, why is it that when Canadians talk about taking the MCATs, you use the word, write, instead of take? Like:

"I will be writing the MCAT in June."

or

"I wrote the MCAT in August."

Everytime someone says it, it stands out like crazy because it makes no sense to me. I know English is different for every country, but most of the time it's cool. In this case, it's just weird.

LOL hahahahahahahaha

If someone tells me a story like:

"So I was at the ABM to get some bucks for a down on a bachelor I found ,because I gotta just get outta the house, and a hoser comes up behind me and asks me if I got a few loonies. I pretend to check my pockets then I tell the brainer to quit drinking away his pogey and get a job. I didn't want to give 'em anything, you know? Specially a toonie, when he would just spend it on a 2-4 anyway. So then I go home to pick up a list of stuff my mom wanted from the dep. But then my mom's friend from the states walks into the kitchen and all I could think of was to ask her if she had a rubber because we already have enough homo milk in the house and I wanted to take it off the list. But all of a sudden, the old cougar thinks I'm coming on to her and I have to run out of the house. It's a good thing I got a new pair of runners last month because she was fast. Anyway, at the store, the lineup was crazy and the two 66ers that my mom wanted were getting real heavy, so I ditched them so that I could go pay for the bachelor. But when I show up, the English Muffin's already left! $%^^& So that's what I did today. $$$$ all! At least the weather was nice."

Yeah, that I get. But if someone says they wrote the MCAT, I'm thinking that they actually wrote the MCAT and that I should hang them from the CN tower until they give me the answers.

If I were you, I'd keep all of those schools, because your application is all over the place (very good MCAT, low cumulative GPA, good research experience, not so hot BCPM). If money is an issue and you really want to cut schools, I'd probably cut Mayo and Baylor.

EDIT: have you tried perusing MDapps? This should give you an idea of whether your GPA might keep you out of Cali schools despite your MCAT. I know they screen for the MCAT for sure, but I don't know how low of a GPA they'd consider.

Since your from UCR, have you considered the Thomas Haider UCR/UCLA program? Your one of the few who can take advantage of it since your a UCR graduate. It will give you one more chance in CA.

That program has specified pre-reqs that only people that were admitted in the program have taken. It's an accelerated program.
