From this, it looks like the pre-reqs are the same pre-reqs required of any medical school. Your planning to apply to UCLA but they have the same pre-reqs as the Thomas Haider Program. If you don't have the pre-reqs to apply to the Haider program then you don't have the pre-reqs for UCLA.

Don't worry though because you don't have to have these pre-reqs by the time you apply, you just have to have them by the time you matriculate.

And the program looks like it is four years. Two years at UCR and two years at UCLA. Plus side is you get your MD from UCLA. I think if you start the program as a freshman trying for a BS/MD than that's when it is accelerated.

EDIT: have you tried perusing MDapps? This should give you an idea of whether your GPA might keep you out of Cali schools despite your MCAT. I know they screen for the MCAT for sure, but I don't know how low of a GPA they'd consider.

I'd second removal of Baylor. Ties to Texas always has preference over OOS applicants, and your GPA might just make them gloss over you.

I'm trying to figure out some "safety" and middle tier schools to apply to. I have a lot of schools already, but want to make sure I covered my bases.
Quick run down:
Post Bacc Student (23yo) Asian --> did post bacc bc I realized I wanted to do med my junior year
Major: Psych
East Coast Preference
GPA: 4.0 (BCPM) and ~ 3.9 (overall)
MCAT: 31Q (once only)
2 years clinical research in peds onc
Tons of community service.
Ugrad: UPenn
State: New York
Slight preferences: mild-warm weather, city... but rural is okay too-- might be a good change 🙂

Now I am debating whether I should change all those English words to American words in my personal statement and work/activities section....the ones like centre, honours.....Meh...by the way, thanks a lot for the comment on my profile! I figured that you were too Lazy to put Lazy after Sketch.

I'm about to submit AMCAS. Looking at mdapps has made me expand my list of schools from 7 to 13 because while I think I have decent stats, it seems like a lot of qualified applicants get rejected when they shouldn't. My list of 13 consists of 2 in-state safeties and a lot of top schools with not much in the middle. My reasoning is that surely I'll get into one of the 11, but do you all think I should add some more mid-level schools? No West Coast, please. Thanks a lot for any advice you can give me!

I guess that's my question... Since my stats are around average for those places (and higher for a few), is it too risky to hope I won't go 0/11?

Nothing is assured, especially since a few of those schools, no one would count on. That's not to say that you won't get in anywhere, but idea of having "safety" schools is to avoid the stigma of being a re-applicant. For most people, going to med school > going to their dream med school.

And waiting a year to apply sucks!
 
I am thinking about applying EDP to my state school. My state school is my #1 choice. I have 3.8 GPA with 3.85 BPCM and MCAT was 32 O (first time). I have solid volunteer and work experience with good letters of rec. What are your thoughts on early decision and am I competitive enough? Does anyone know the stats of how may EDP applicants get accepted? Thanks

Best place to get these answers- call the school. Most of them are good about letting you know if you're "competitve enough" for their EDPs.

Edit: Also, make sure you've totally weighed the pros and cons of applying early decision. It's somewhat of a gamble...
 
Thanks for your help. Yea I guess EDP criteria and stats depend on the school at which you are applying. I am just trying to make sure this is the right way to go before I submit AMCAS.

It's like you know me...Anyway, as long as your grammar and syntax are flawless, I'm pretty sure people will understand that it's not you making a mistake but just a subtle difference in language.
 
So I recently realized that I was entering my "year status" wrong in my AMCAS app. I became a junior and senior ahead of time due to IB credits, and also because I transfered, things shifted weird...so everything was actually all mixed up from what I had it. After calculating my grades in excel (yes, i'm a dork) I realized that my general GPA trend goes down over 4 years. Instead of having a bad junior year due to a rough transfer and part-time status (3.18) to a senior year of great come back (3.85), I went to having a much better junior year and a senior year that finished off lower... (so I went from FR 3.9/3.9, SO 3.7/3.7, JR 3.7/3.6, SR 3.6/3.4 ....overall 3.75/BPCM=3.66) My grad school GPA are 3.80 for both overall and BPCM.

First of all...did I put in my year status right? You do have to base it off of actual credits instead of how many years you've been in...correct?

Secondly...my chances so far?
Unfortunately i'm still waiting on MCAT scores (get them back wed. hopefully), but based on my GPA...are my trends going to hurt me? Will they look at grad school over undergrad or equal?

Credits, not years (30/60/90/120). I'm not sure about downward trends.

I'm popping my forum cherry right now, so be gentle🙂 I'm a Florida resident who will be graduating early with a Microbiology and Molecular Biology next year in what will be my 3rd year. I currently have a Overall: 3.74 Science: 3.71 and will be taking the MCAT this August aiming for a 30: I have had several hundred hours of various clinical experience since Junior yr. of High School with NO research experience. With say a 28-32 on MCAT how do I fare at the following schools, or which should I remove straight out, if I get my AMCAS in early this week:

These are pretty hard to get into, even for CA residents. I would hold off on adding those to your list until after you get the MCAT score - and add them only if you have 33+.

I had a semester of college level classes that I took right before I started my freshman year at my undergrad institution. I called AMCAS and they said to go by credits, which would throw off my year status for my entire undergrad 4 years. So, I did it. During verification, AMCAS re-attributed my credits to their "proper" year (i.e., classes I took my first year of my undergrad school were all designated "freshman" even though my second semester of grades were well above the amount for freshman status), and they re-attributed that semester of classes I took before my freshman hear as high school (HS) credits (but obviously for college credit, so they counted). Don't know if they'll do the same for you or not. Your situation does sound a little different since your extra credits are around junior year. Good luck.

I really want to stay in texas but im not gonna limit myself. just wondering if anybody has any insight on my chances because I know so little about these out of state school's standards. I say this because MSAR and other sources seem so irratic with their numbers and I dont want to rely completely on those numbers. I'm also wondering how much going to a school without a great national reputation will hurt me. my numbers aren't great in comparison to much of this thread, but I'm proud of them. and constructive advice is really appreciated. Hey guys! Whats up?

Basically, I'm looking for a little input about my list of schools. First of all, I am from New Jersey if that matters at all. My overall GPA is a 3.64, with a BCPM of 3.58. I don't have my MCAT scores back yet (supposed to be up June 13th). My list is pretty broad -- 31 schools ranging from average MCATs of 28 to 35 -- but when I get my MCAT scores back, Ill end up trimming down the list from one end or the other. However, I was just wondering if any of the schools seemed out of place or anything. Any suggestions on schools I should remove or maybe some to add?

No. Don't worry. A 40 is only .4% of test-takers. Just go by school acceptance averages because that's what matters, not that other people can and will score higher than I can ever hope to.
 
This is the question that has been asked here 1000 times. What are my chances? I have just started thinking about career in medicine. I have a 3.98 GPA in Biochemistry and I am about to start my senior year. I am not really scared about the MCAT since on practice exams I am usually around 40. The problem is I do not really have much research experience. This year I am interning at the lab focusing on pulmonary research, and hopefully I'll pull a publication out of it, but that is all. Do you think I can get in average med schools like UofI Chicago or Souther Illinois? What about high end like Hopkins? Do you think I should take a couple of years off and work on my CV before applying?

This is a list of schools that Im considering applying to. I think though that I might need some more lower end schools. Additionally I need to cut some (especially after addition of more lower end schools) as I am really not wanting to apply to an insane amount. Id like 20 at the very max. Ideally 15.

Overall GPA: 3.8 Science: about the same but I dont remember
Most significant EC: Hospital Volunteering, Shadowing, Habitat for Humanity, NSF summer internship, NIH post bacc 1 year fellowship, teaching/tutoring.

I was thinking about retaking the mcat, but after studying for a week I decided that the moderate admissions advantage wasnt worth the large amount of work involved. Additionally a retake would delay my application submission while I waited for the score release. Hopefully I made the right decision.

Anyway I plan to submit AMCAS at the end of June. I will be living in MD this year (hence the east coast schools). My home state is IL (hence the midwest ones).
 
I'm a Canadian applying this round. I have completed my degree.

3.78 Overall/3.78 BCMP

Most recent MCAT: 34Q (I've written 3 times in total though).

Where should I apply? I've got good extra-curriculars. Couple summers of research, club exec, volunteer exec/hospital/abroad, travelling, languages, etc.

Do I have a shot at the top 15? I am submitting in mid-August.

(Wonder if my writing sample will help at all? Should I retake? I didn't study very much at all for the mcat, probably a total of 40 hours, and I didn't take a class.)

Extras:
1 year of work experience in hospital (phlebotomy) between 12-40 hours a week
Taking a year off, during which I will continue working as a phlebotomist, but at a much larger hospital
Short period of organic chemistry research--no publications
Good involvement and leadership in two very active organizations on campus, helped with planning of community service-both local and out of state trips
Participant in many week-long service trips to different states over school breaks

Any opinions or ideas would be welcomed:
I'm planning on applying to most of the Illinois schools, Iowa, MCW, and George Washington University.

Your GPA looks good, and considering you didn't study at all, you did well..but not enough. You could retake it but it depends on when you're applying..for the entering class of 2008?
