Does anyone have a good resource to determine how the credentials of OOS applicants differs from the in-staters?

When looking at schools like UVa or OHSU that would really be more helpful than knowing just the percentages for OOS and the overall average MCAT/GPA...

Start clinical work as soon as possible. Start research as soon as possible. If medicine is really your passion, you will give it your all to fix your ECs 🙂.

it sounds like your undergrad institution has put you at a disadvantage. i went to a teeny tiny liberal arts college so i can relate. damn those people from those big universities where they have all the guidance and support in the world. 🙁 get in the hospital and start volunteering and shadowing wherever you can.
 
😱 That is a pretty app! Why not throw in just one mid-tier school just to be safe? Even if you don't though, I think you'll be A-okay.
 
like the above guy said, your app. looks really strong and i don't think you'll have trouble getting into any of those schools. i would say apply to a few others just in case though, like Pitt or something like that whose rankings are still high but not top 10. good luck! :luck:

What are my chances?



Everytime I turn on the tv I either watch House MD, Nip Tuck or ER. I have learned so much about being a doctor just from watching these shows!

Everyone keeps telling me my calling is to be a doctor!

I am good looking enough to play a role on Nip Tuck.

Last night I sold my soul to the devil in exchange for a spot in medical school. (after seing the pitiful state I was in he threw in a 45 Mcat)

I have people skills.

I am not in for the money. Swear to God.

I am halfway in it for the prestige.

I am 5% in it for the satisfaction of my mail coming to my house with a big giant MD next to my name.

The only other thing I could thing of is law school and although I am not in it for the money, a typical lawyer gig pays pennies for all the hours you put in. (and ER rules Law And Order).

I know I will make my Mom proud. 🙂

I will make all my friends envious!

My GPA is 4.05 (honors classes)

I really think your year of shadowing should be plenty of clinical experience. Granted it's not volunteering or EMT, but you've otherwise shown your service through your pre-health and health awareness clubs.

Hmmm, unless you can pinpoint some big thing you've done wrong the last two times, I wouldn't recommend taking the MCAT again.

You have AWESOME EC's (research, shadowing, lots of health related volunteering, and cool hobby), and a pretty good gpa... but with your MCAT score, it will be very tough to get into a US allopathic school. I think you'd make a strong candidate for DO school though.

I want to apply to University of Oklahoma's Medical school, and I want to know what my chances are right now. I am thinking about retaking the mcat in august, because my average practice test score was a 32, and I really underachieved on the real thing. I want to know if it I would have a good chance right now though.

I'm applying MD. Does that make a difference in all of the people telling me I should apply to safeties?

Anyway, This summer I have both clinical and research to compare, and I like the clinical aspect better. Maybe someday research will figure in.
 
My pre-med advisor is leaving my school for one more prestigious and has left me in the dark for applying. I was wondering if I am in the right direction and if I have overlooked anywhere.

I'm kinda of a late comer (just decided on medicine earlier this year) and I'm new to SDN, so I'd appreciate anyone's opinion (just the highlights):

36 MCAT
3.93 GPA (slightly higher BCMP)

1.5 years of regular community volunteering
1 year of Club Sports, IMs every year
1 year and a summer of biochem research
Couple of cool sounding academic awards

In the last few months, I've gotten around 30 or so hours shadowing and I've spent around 40 or so hours with patients. I'm also at St. Jude this summer doing a program that revolves around Pediatric Oncology (basic science research, but some interacting with MDs and patients). I want to submit the AMCAS soon, so I don't have a lot of time to change those numbers. What are my chances at some research oriented schools in the South (i.e. Duke, Vandy, Emory, etc.)?

Extensive volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and Amnesty International
TA for organic chemistry class

will be doing clinical shadowing this summer, continue in the fall
will be doing research in organic chemistry whole of next year - will try to pull in a publication
hope to continue with community service work

i know that there isnt much for u to work with, given that i havent given my mcats yet, and i 'will be doing' a lot of stuff next year. but if I do get the expected mcat score and have a good year (maintain gpa trend - gpa: 3.8; bcpm: 3.9, and do the ECs), what mix of schools should i be looking at? thanks, any advice is appreciated.

I would cut your list down to 20, max, unless you have lots of extra time and money.

1997-1998:Worked/Volunteered for the City of Bridgeport Connecticut Fire Rescue for 6 months.
1998-2000: work full time (40+hrs/week) at Baptist Hospital Pediatrics ER as an EMT. From there I was invited by a Dr. Richard Rienbolt to be a medical missionary in South America (Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Argentina). It was suppose to be for the summer however it turned into two years.
2003: Returned to school where I will be graduating in the Spring 2008.
Clubs: AMSA, AED(medical honor society) and a founding father of Phi Delta Epsilon fraternity at my school, Florida International University. Big Brothers and Big Sisters; however I just recently joined roughly 4 months ago.

I was also a Campus minister for a year. I am also musician; drum set 14 years and guitar for 5 years.

NOW! Due to my work schedule my GPA suffered tremendously. I know its horrific however I heard that there are some MD schools that look at the whole package. Can someone please tell me which are these schools and, what are my chances getting into to them?

Hi Everyone!!

I am a Junior, major is BIOLOGY, cumulative GPA is 3.58 (sci GPA: ~3.5) I have lot of volunteering experience, shadowing MD's, etc. My MCAT score from April is very disappointing (10BS, 8VR, 😡5!PS, TOTAL: 22M) Yep, that 5 killed me. Anyway, I am retaking the MCAT in AUGUST, and I am trying to submit my application before JULY.

I am just stressed about the fact that my new MCAT scores might be in too late and I might get screened out initially :scared:, is that a reasonable worry?

Also should I be stressed to finish and submit my application ASAP even though my MCAT scores will be out much later?

And lastly, what are my chances, (assuming I get over a 30 on the MCAT in August)- which I am strongly determined to do with all my guts.

I think you've got a fine list, and will definitely get into one of your schools (barring a bizarre fluke). Just curious - since you're an IL resident, why do you have UofC, Northwestern, Loyola and UIC down, but no Rush?

I guess all of the above IL schools were recommended heavily by my advisor. Don't get me wrong, I think Rush is a great school, but in all honesty, I sort of want to leave IL, if possible. (fam is too close and I like a certain amount of independence).
 
Can't wait to get cut down to size on this. I know BCPM is super sub-par, but minus my first semester of college, it would be just shy of a 3.8, overall would be about 3.6. Yeah, ugly introduction to undergrad.

Here's to hoping adcoms recognize that.

I'm a canadian applying this year and i wanted to know my chances for differnet school.

I going into my 4th year at basically a noname school in canada. I did an NSERC in genetics last summer and have presented it at 1 conference in feb. I'm currently writing it up (1st author), hopefully sending it in to a journal in 1-1.5 weeks. i have roughly a 3.95 gpa, don't know my BCPM but i'm sure its around the same. my mcat last august was 11/9/12 N (p/v/b). for EC's i have a bunch of music stuff and token volunteering. I plan to shadow an opthalmologist and a general surgeon soon (a week each - around 40-50 hours). What i was planning on doing was applying to some 'safety' schools and middle tier rolling admission ones now within the next 2-3 weeks and rewrite the mcats on sept 7th. I think i can push my mcats to a 35-36 if i study hard and i was hoping to apply to some top tier after that. how does that sound/what kind of shot do i have at top-tier?

So I've sent out some of my apps but quick question.. I live in the UK and am worried about secondaries even getting here? Was this a problem for anyone living out fo the country? Once I start receiving them I imagine I will fax them back to speed things up.
Next- my scores seem low (I wouldn't really consider them low but most of the people here have fantastic scores). Anyway- 3.6 overall 3.4 sciences (took many grad level science courses) (Brandeis Univ) and grauated with highest honors, 31 (11V 10BS 10PS) MCAT. This is my recent score -I took them once 3yrs ago as well and hadn't prepared-(26)
I have a few publications (1-1st author, 1 lower author, 1-2nd author and more on their way), an award for the top first author student paper in JGP (2006), lots of research awards (Howard Hughes, Wellcome Trust), volunteer EMT in the US and abroad, lots of leadership, great recs, and PhD (will be complete June 2008) from Oxford University in Physiology...I'm almost 24 y/o

Hi, I'm alittle confused right now on whats my best path,
I got a 11BS,10VR,8PS 29Q on the MCAT and I really should have studied more. I have signed up for the july retake cuz I think I can do better. My GPA is 3.75 and probably a 3.65 science GPA. I have been doing honors in the major in neurology and completing my thesis in fall of this year. I am a FL resident and I really want to get out of Florida for medical school. I would love to go to a school in MN because I lived there for awhile but I'm not sure if I am even near good enough on my stats. If I don't retake, what are my chances at OOS schools? which ones? Thanks so much...I really am lost on what to do.

Fellow IL resident here. I'd say definitely try Loyola, Rush, U of I, and perhaps Southern IL. I'd probably also toss in Northwestern and Chicago just to see what happens. :luck:goodluck.
 
Hey again, I would really like to go to a school that would help me do research while I'm there, but the best for research seem to all be really hard to get into, and I don't have the scores for MD/PhD. Anyone know about medical research options for someone with stats like this?

Your MCAT is just slightly below average, but it is balanced well which should help. That said, when schools are initially screening I don't think (though not sure) they will take into account when you took organic... unless you put this in your PS or something. As far as schools go, UAMS is pretty selective to instaters so you might consider leaving that one off. Maybe add SLU and Creighton? I'd apply to at least 15 schools. Good luck!

Hi Everyone,

I would really appreciate some input on my list of schools. All of them are pretty much reaches. As a CA applicant last year I only got secondaries at UCI and the two UCLAs. This year I decided not to bother with the CA schools too much, and I'm wondering if that's a good decision. I'm also starting an SMP soon. Any other schools I should consider adding?
