Hey guys... just wanted to get quick thoughts on my chances and see how I rate up with others.

I am applying for both MD and DO schools though I haven't completed the DO application.

Heres what I look like:

I go to University of Rochester, which is generally considered a top notch school. I am a Neuroscience major.

28M MCAT (10 VR, 9 PS, 9 BS)

3.5 GPA (upward trend)
3.4 BCPM

I've worked several jobs over the summer including Network Technician and Bus Boy. This summer I am working and doing my own research in a stroke lab at Strong Hospital.

As far as clinical experience goes, I spent about 12 hours a week shadowing for my entire senior year of high school including OR, ER, etc. Last summer I spent a week shadowing a neurosurgeon through surgeries and clinical time. This summer I have also shadowed a D.O. ER doctor several times.

I don't have any volunteering that I can put down and my extracurricular activities are limited to intramural sports.

My applications to MD schools went out to all schools in NYS (I am a resident), as well as Wright State and Marshall. I would love to get into a SUNY school. What do you think my chances are at a SUNY school or any of the other NYS schools?

Also, what D.O. schools do you recommend I apply to?

Any other thoughts would be great too.
 
Please give me comments/suggestions on my list of schools. It looks very "top-heavy" right now, partly b/c I'm applying to MD/PhD programs in Epidemiology. Any and all advice welcome! I'm trying to lock this down by June 30...

I am from Cornell, chemistry/psych major.

I came into cornell as an engineer and decided to go all out premed. My cumulative is at 3.4765, and my BCMPE is around 3.4~3.5. I will be taking MCATs this july and expecting about (hopefully) 35.

My home state is NJ, and I really would like to get into one of the SUNYs because of the proximity, and especially SUNY because its the closest one to home and the city.

My main problem is that Cornell is very isolated and there are no decent hospitals nearby, and my last clinical experience is from high school. During winter/summer vacations I either helped out my family business or did psychology research in Cornell but this lack of clinical experience is starting to worry me.

A few 'special' things about me are basically
  • Family troubles (near divorced parents)
  • Worked for my dad's company during the school year
  • 3 years of Intercollegiate Tae Kwon Do league (2nd and 3rd place finishes several times in the ivy-northeast league)
  • Photographer (I do events for church/school clubs)
  • 2 summer psychology research with children and language
  • Worked one many many websites for various organizations on campus
  • Volunteering for geriatric center
  • Church, mission trips overseas
  • Double major in psych and chem.
Do I have a shot anywhere without any clinical experience in college? The worst case scenario, I will get rejected from everywhere, then I will just take a year off and get some hospital experience built up and reapply. Does this sound good?

The reason why clinical experience is mostly necessary is because you don't go interview for a job without finding out what it's going to be like. And because you're going to be in debt if you don't like it and get out, that's even more trouble for you.

The second problem that arises is that you don't have a "warchest" of experience to draw upon in interviews. I personally only started volunteering in the ER in June and already have a much more in depth understanding of medicine than I would have pretended to know.

Simply put, get some experience. It doesn't really matter how long, it just needs to be meaningful.
 
I do have high school volunteering (50+ hours) with some ER volunteering as well. I have been hospitalized twice with one major surgery. Would that count as somewhat unorthodox clinical experience?

Either way, I will be trying to cram in my hospital experience this summer and into the school year hopefully. Would med schools see this or is this a futile effort.

Also what my med school applicant committee interviewee told me is that although I may not have much direct clinical experience, I have had plenty of life experiences that unconventionally (like the hospitalization above) can qualify, but not fully replace, as clinical experience. She definitely was one of the most knowledgeable persons in my health career evaluations committee, who actually talks to the admissions people from various colleges and I was wondering if she was telling me the truth.
 
Is a BCPM upward trend from an ivy of 2.5 fresh year, 3.1 soph year, 3.3 junior year, and 3.7 senior year going to be enough? my overall bcpm is going to considered low (between 3.1 and 3.2), I know that, but will this trend be enough when combined with great ECs, 31 MCAT? I had never really thought about the numbers broken out like that until AMCAS verified, but somehow seeing them broken out like this makes the grades seem even worse to me if that is possible.

So, I really want to get into a top tier school. I know that my numbers match the averages (although not the exact score distributions, most all of them have 12-12-11), but I'm weak on the EC's. I have research, volunteering, but little doctor shadowing. Also, my research was only for a year and I couldn't do any significant extracurriculars for 2 years because of NROTC. I dropped NROTC after 3 semesters which is half of my stay at UT (graduating in 3 years). I am doing two research labs now, but I have nothing to show for it since I just started. Also, I am South Asian which puts me in a very small category as most top schools accept no more than 20 Asian Indians. My ethnic group tends to be highly competitive so I think I'm at a disadvantage there. Lastly, my GPA is good, but I have to admit the academics at UT aren't too tough. It's pretty easy to get a high GPA.

I'm definitely going to apply to Baylor, but a family friend (who is also Asian Indian) applied last year with a 36 MCAT and probably a 3.8-3.9 GPA (I never asked her) in a Business Honors program and got waitlisted with no acceptance.

Also, can I not apply to Texas Tech and A&M without consequence? I seriously do not want to go there.

What other top med schools do I have a decent shot at? I can expound on my extracurriculars a bit more if it helps.

I wouldn't be freaking out if it weren't for the fact that I bombed the verbal section on my most recent MCAT. Although my combined score of 33 S is pretty respectable, all the schools on my list only consider the most recent score (except for GWU). So basically, that 7 will be sticking out like a sore thumb...👎

I'm looking for more schools to add that are perhaps more realistic choices for me. Thanks for your help.

First of all, congratulations on your stellar MCAT score. You are obviously an intelligent student and your numbers alone will get you interviews at many schools. A lot will depend on your personal statement and interview. Use both as an opportunity to help explain your situation. You have a great shot at any top medical school; there isn't much you can really do now but craft your application to perfection and hope for the best. Best of luck.
 
I just got my MCAT scores for May 25

My GPA is 3.96, BCPM slightly lower. I have lots of research, involved on campus, but no clinical experience, although I will be watching some surgeries and doing some shadowing this summer.

My first question was if I should even submit my AMCAS before the August score? Also, I am not a native English speaker (was born somewhere else)...do med schools take this into account? Will med schools reject my application right after looking at my scores or will they wait and see what I get on my August MCATs? What schools should I aim for?

I really don't want to take a year off and apply again.

I was thinking about retaking the mcat, but after studying for a week I decided that the moderate admissions advantage wasnt worth the large amount of work involved. Additionally a retake would delay my application submission while I waited for the score release. Hopefully I made the right decision.

Anyway I plan to submit AMCAS at the end of June. I will be living in MD this year (hence the east coast schools). My home state is IL (hence the midwest ones)

What other schools should I apply to and are all these schools I have listed reasonable? Please give feedback anyone!

Wow, incredible MCAT scores, but your GPA is meh. Your MCAT scores will surely offset the GPA though. I heard MD/PhD's have more rigorous requirements so your GPA may hold you back on that. You are 5 points above the average for every top-tier school (except WashU), but about .1-.2 points below their GPA. You shouldn't have any problem at mid-tier schools.

What was your major, and do you go to a difficult university? With your MCAT scores, I'm guessing you probably had a rigorous UG program.

-Edit- Oh wait, you are a URM. You'll have no problem at all getting into any school then.

Basics:

Average EC's I think
Expecting at least 4 of my LOR's to be excellent, possibly the 5th also. For whatever it's worth (not sure if this actually works in differentiating applicants)

So basically I know that I'm competitive (note: competitive, not necessarily saying I'm gonna get in) for good schools, so my focus is on seeing where I can get money. Now I know I know, everybody says that (for example) if you get into Harvard at full tuition and you get into a lower ranked school with significant scholarship, still take Harvard. Personally, I'd rather use the money if it is a significant difference.

So that being said, does anyone have any suggestions on schools that I should add to my application? Preferably ones that have a history of being generous on the wallet, either through grants or merit-scholarships.

I also know that my list is extremely top-heavy, but I do expect to get into at least one of them plus my state school (UMD). However, I guess weirder things have happened, so should I add in schools lower than UMD?

Thanks for any input in advance.
 
At Duke i double majored in biomedical and electrical engineering and also have a double minor in math and chemistry

I have a research publication, recieved national recognition for community service, and am currently working for Medtronic as a clinical specialist in the cardiac disease rhythmn management division.

given my low gpa, do i have a shot at top 10 or 20 schools?
 
At the University of Central Florida i have an science gpa of 3.941. I just took the june 15th mcat, on my practice tests i have consistently got between a 28-34. I am banking on my score being atleast a 30.

extra curriculars:
1.5 years of research 15-25 hrs/week
shadowing father who is physician since i was 13
-other shadowing experience also.
6 months volunteering at a free clinic
6 months volunteering at a local hospital

What are my chances of getting into a florida school?

i think you still have a good shot as long as everything else is in good order (well rounded, LORs). if asked about the GPA, don't make excuses such as "i was a double major and a double minor." don't apply just to top 10 or 20 though either. get some middle stuff in there too. make sure the school has something you like though because a lot of adcoms can smell "back up school" from a mile away. good luck

i think you have a good shot at FL schools. they love their own down there. hard to really say though without the actual mcat score back yet. be sure that your PS makes it clear that going to med school is your choice and not your father's. be sure your writing doesn't make it sound like you are entitled or better than others because your dad was a doc (i have read a few PS like that.) Good luck

From one source- you have no problems with the schools you've listed. And with some extra resources go ahead and try the other schools on your potential list... No need to rule them out until they rule you out. I think you have an excellent choice. Just make sure you stay smart.

I have a 3.87 GPA, and am a Canadian student.

I'm a bit concerned with my MCAT scores, and I will take them again in August. However, I'd like to apply to some schools now. I was told that I should be competitive at middle to low tier schools (I'm not really sure which these are). Schools that I am considering are:

It might also be of note that I am a Senator at my university, have planned and participated in two overseas volunteering trips (one in New Orleans), planned frosh week, volunteered in a lab for a summer, and have clinical volunteering placements (ER and physiotherapy clinic)... among other leadership activities..

Why are you planning to take the MCAT again? You're already above 30 w/ a great GPA, plus your score either dropped or barely improved when you retook it last time (dunno which one you took first). Plus it seems like retakes are just as likely to be a lower score as it is a higher score, from what I've been seeing. Are you consistently getting 34-35 or more on the practice tests?

i was averaging between 35-and 38 on my practice tests and then i got the physical sciences section from hell on may 25th. I'm taking them again so I can open a few more doors for Canadian schools (they have stringent cutoffs). Any suggestions of which schools I should add/take off?

You've got great stats, but if I were you I'd throw in two or three mid-tier schools. CA schools are real crap shoots from what I've read on here due to the vast number of instate applicants, and all of the others on your list are pretty exclusive and involve some luck too (even if you've got stats in their range). I'd throw in a couple that you can consider "safeties" just in case. Unless, of course, you don't want to go anywhere but to one of the schools above, and/or you don't mind reapplying next year. I'm sure you'll get into one of your schools, but I also believe in safety nets. And just in case you're on several wait lists next spring, it can be nice to have an acceptance in hand for peace of mind. Can't hurt....

some more info: non traditional student, 3 kids, emt, birth assistant to a homebirth midwife, doula (I am interested in OB and RE).

please provide comments whether i shud add or drop some of my schools in the list below:
MCAT: 34 (9VR,13 PS,12BS)
GPA: 4.0 (BCPM)
4.0 (overall)

Many Volunteer experiences in India(did my high school there)- orphanages, rural medical programs,Mother Teresa Charity Home
At University:
1. Shadowed a physician(in a private clinic) for 1 year-5hrs/week
2. E-Board- BMES- organized various events for BME students and faculty. Member of various other on-campus clubs.
3. Biomedical Research for 2 yrs, 2 abstracts in national conferences.
4. Dean's list for all semesters
5. Sigma Xi grants in aid for research(GIAR)
6. Various university recognition awards for research, academic achievements and community service.

Texas schools (besides Baylor) are a different application (TMDSAS) just so you're aware. And the essay is a bit more specific as well.

It might also be of note that I am a Senator at my university, have planned and participated in two overseas volunteering trips (one in New Orleans), planned frosh week, volunteered in a lab for a summer, and have clinical volunteering placements (ER and physiotherapy clinic)... among other leadership activities..
