Do the programs even know who they matched??

Yes, they found out today... and for whatever reason we (the people who REALLY care where we matched and are chewing our fingers to the bone from the anxiety) have to wait until tomorrow.

I would think the programs (who are probably happy so long as they filled - not a problem this year) could wait the extra day, instead of the other way around :meanie:

Of course, they do have all the work of getting contracts ready... so I *guess* the extra day could be helpful...

why can the match not be today? scrambling was yesterday? maybe they need a day to write up the papers to go in our envelopes?

but I still don't see why we couldn't all find out about 3 weeks ago.

Quality control, my tuckus... it should not take longer than 10 minutes to run the match algorithm several times to make sure it is accurate, given modern computing power and distributed calculations... we could all have our results the next day - or the day after that, at the latest.

I think (steps on conspiracy theory pedestal) there is some behind the scenes and under the table trading between PDs during the lag between when the match algorithm is ACTUALLY (read: theoretically) finished 20 minutes later and when match results are finally released. That is also why there is 4 days between when we get out "did I match" and "Where did I match" notifications - The secret society of PDs are still concluding their sinister deals and finalizing their selections during that time. (steps down)

*phew*

I'm sure that belongs in a separate thread, however.

I ranked Vegas #1 as well and matched some where....hmmm...we may be working side by side next year!!

I'm still really nervous b/c about a month ago I heard that they were not ranking very many people...which probably explains their current situation with the scramble, especially being a new program.

Great! Where are you from??

I know that they in fact did not rank very many people this year, hence the not filling. (current resident told me)

This is pretty exciting. Congrats!

yeah some of mine too, so I think for their sakes, I could wait a couple of hours. It sucks for the scramblers because every hour that goes by, I am pretty sure their self esteem drops, if they haven't found anything yet. I pray for the best for all of them

Technically the scramble ends at noon tomorrow, but I would imagine today is the day to try to secure a spot somewhere.

I just finished washing, waxing, and detailing my car. Going to go to a get-together tonight with some classmates. That should pass the time quickly I hope.

I have been holding onto my cell phone extra tight since 2pm, on the off chance that a program would break the rules, but of course nothing...

Some of my classmates are still scrambling today. 🙁

A poster from last night, chumbojumbo, was still unmatched by last night. I hope it worked out today. 🙁

Going to party number 3 this week tonight. $1 burger night!

Sweet! Funny that my school has no organized class party during this week at all. Except for the match party where we read out our match on the stage....

Well they aren't all "planned" school events.

Mon - school fundraiser
Tues - pick up partying
Wed - tradition
Thurs - match day
Fri - City wide match day party with all chicago med schools
Sat - Good friends bday and engagement party + continuing match day celebrations
Sun - sleep

I got a call from one of the transitional years I was applying to yesterday. I hate it for them that they weren't filled yet, but I wasn't going to stick around another night. I slept poorly enough last night as it was.

Someone started a thread in pre-allo asking why people complain that loans are so hard to pay off. I think that will be a fun one to watch.

Hah! I just got my finanical aid info for my exit interview. Grand total over 5 years...$278,000! Wooooo. Beat that suckers!

BTW...I may have to break 4k tonight.

😱 😱 😱

I have my exit interview next week. I think my total in loans from undergrad at Miami, grad school, and med school will turn out to be about $145,000. Thank goodness for in-state tuition for med school.

Sadly, I will hit that with just next year's tuition...then I will still have my 3rd and 4th years left. :scared:

Coming up on 18 hours now. I doubt I'm going to get any sleep tonight. I think I'm going to watch monday's episode of 24 right now.

Awesome! At this rate, we'll meet half our class before we see each other. Well, provided we were all ranked.

It was a good episode, but I didn't enjoy it like I usually do.

I understand that there was not alot of variation in the quality of applicants this year. Basically same letters/boards. There was no REAL layering out, it made rank lists tough. Good luck everyone.

This entire season has been kind of blah since the premiere. I don't know if the format is getting old, or something else. Lost and Heroes, on the other hand, have been quality all year. 👍

Screw it! 4K baby!!!!!!!!!😀

Guess that argues against the displaced residents from the UK and Australia theory:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=380110

I just posted the following on that thread:

Don't think so mate. At least not from AUS. In fact, visa policy was just changed over the past year to allow non-aussies to stay past med school and apply for permanent residency. It used to be much harder based on the old policy which detracted points for doctors when determining eligibility to obtain residency. However, they realized now that they have a huge doctor shortage, particularly rurally, and now you can stay... easily. As for increased applicants, I just matched into EM from U. of Sydney (one of the four 4-yr graduate medical programs that are likely to have americans based on the 4-yr format). In my class off 250, the vast majority are aussie but of the north americans I only know of myself, a canadian that matched into Toronto rads today, and a friend who is dual US/Aus resident that matched into IM. Everyone else stayed in AUS.... easily. Sorry to burst bubbles but AUS is unlikely to be at blame here.

Sounds like a very imaginative theory though! 😛

Can someone tell me why Stanford made the tournament? I mean, seriously. Also, why are there more Big 10 teams than SEC teams? Did the selection committee not bother to actually watch any basketball this year?

The question is did you watch any Stanford games this year? Or Pac-10 games at all? They deserved the spot more than an additional **YAWN** SEC or BIG 10 team...

well it was making us feel better....

It's just soo difficult to ignore some of the embarrassing losses that they had this year. Not to mention that they've only won 4 of their last 11 games. Traditionally, the tourney committee has heavily weighed how a team played down the stretch....apparently not in Stanford's case.

Wildly inconsistent team that will likely lose by a large margin to Louisville in the first round.

Including the US/Canadian/other international med students? What does residency training in emergency medicine in Australia entail?

It's 6 years is it not? Australia has undifferentiated general medicine training for 3 years (essentially to use you as a slave for 3 years in the public hospitals).

where the heck are people posting where they matched?

Yeah, mainly who I was talking about. There seems to be some students from Singapore. I think many of them of gone back if you look into the previous years. As for north americans, most decided not to match in either the US or Canadian match. Sydney suits them just fine. There are a couple other randoms that came to sydney through my 4 years there. A couple from south africa, 1 from jamaica. I think they mostly stayed in sydney but don't know if they will return to their homes eventually.

Just about. It is 7 or 8 years, really. You are right, you choose the general medicine or surgical training for a 2 to 3 (usually 3) years. Then you try to enter the "college" for your specialty. This is when the number of years is similar to the US, EXCEPT for the fact that you just did 2-3 years of scut work already. There are then a few more obstacles including an exam at the end of specialty training that has about a 50% failure rate. Painful. 👎 Think a decade if you are considering surgery.

Well, all of you are down to a matter of hours now to find out your fates. Hope you all get plenty of sleep tonight!!! :luck:

Oh, and dr will, congrats on the 4k!!!!

Not that I'm proud of it (in fact, it just sucks)... 4 years chiro school + 4 years med school = $288,000 and I'm not even counting the few grand from undergrad and another few grand for residency apps/interviews. Still, you definitely got me beat with amount per year.

chiro school? no way.. tell us about it.. im curious..

last post..

Seriously.. Good luck to all you guys with the match. I know to get this far you have had to sacrifice many things dear to you. Time with your family, signficant others, doing fun things that others did, but you are on the cusp of achieving a lifelong dream. It shows how hard you all have worked to get to this point. I can only wish you all will be as happy next yr as I am this yr. It is tough but it is a blast with so much to learn. Congrats to you personally and to those who have supported you through this difficult process.

Ok that is officially the most serious post I have had on here in the last 3 yrs.. Peace.. The fetus wishes you all the best!

I think that speech just motivated me to study...thanks!!!!!!!!! 😍 (I have a path practical tomorrow and a final on Friday, so I really need to study)

Doctor ordered pizza today when I was volunteering. It was good. 👍

Remember that when you get to where I am. I needed some grub a few days ago, and I had the cash on me, so I ordered pie for everyone in the department (and I made sure to tell the front-desk secretary to let enviro and security to know). The bill was $38, and I told the lady in front to give the delivery guy $50 - but, after the pizza comes, she gives me $6 and change - and I said that I wanted the kid to get the $12. She said she tipped him $5, and the kid almost fell over dead.

It's only money, and it's a nice and practical way to reward the people you work with (and don't do it to curry favor - that is evident on it's face when it happens).

In my class there were 4 people total scrambling, 3 of whom were going into EM. Another confirmation that this year is screwy!!!!!

Heading off to breakfast with friends before the match day festivities, but I wanted to wish everyone good luck today!!!
