The Republic of Texas XXXII: Everything is better in the Lonestar State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am a reapplicant and talked to several of the admissions deans who all mentioned a variation of what I just said.

Its very hard to gauge the sarcasm on message boards. So when I use it, I always follow it with an emoticon like 🙄 to help people grasp that it is indeed sarcasm.

lol. I thought about adding the emoticon. You're right. It saves everyone a lot of time. I just didn't want to lose my edge, you know.

I'm sure this cycle will go very well for you, given your MDApps profile. Best of luck. 🙂

Define "early on"

I submitted TMDSAS on 5/22 and have my last secondary completed on 6/15.

Trying to remember, it was a long time ago. I want to say it was July vs. October but I'm not sure.

Thanks! I hope it goes well for the both of us!

Anyone get a TTU II today for straight MD (non-MD/PhD or MD/JD)? MorganaMD posted she received one, but I think she might be a MD/PhD applicant through AMCAS (not sure).

I was wondering if someone on the forum could help me here - I called TMDSAS but the person whom I spoke with wasn't the most helpful or friendly... I submitted my application June 25. And TMDSAS is processing applications that were submitted June 28... Does that mean my application is complete? I wasn't sure since it still says "TMDSAS processing" in the status.

Its not complete at schools until its "transmitted".

All you OOS-ers out there, take heart! There is room for us in Texas schools. And if you get in, you simply won't believe their hospitality.

So was there any more activity from San Antonio or Lubbock this week? It seemed awfully quiet!

Question...Does anyone know how the schools choose dates for interviews? I've noticed some who get later invite emails are often assigned earlier dates than those receiving invite emails at the same time or sometimes even earlier. I know some have to reschedule so that leaves an opening that needs to be filled, but I don't think that's the full reason. Any thoughts?

There was another Lubbock post today which makes at least two but I think the first one was MD/PHD so I'm inclined the think the second one is too. Same goes for San Antonio except that one was confirmed to be MD/PHD.

Texas school specific threads have been pretty slow. I wouldn't be surprised if a ton of interviews are sent out this week from UTMB, UTSA, Tech, Foster, and A&M

UTSW and UT-H usually doesn't start sending out invites until mid august I believe

Okay, so I need a little advice y'all! And of course I'm in this thread because I'm a proud Texas resident and those OOS applicants just don't get me like you guys do 😀

My MCAT score is significantly lower than the average... a 27. However, my GPA is a 3.81, so I figure that that can *maybe* balance my poor score. I should mention that my first MCAT was a 26. My sGPA is a 3.73. I have a ton of EC's, shadowing experience, volunteer experience, research, the works.

What do you think? I am praying to all the gods for interviews. 👍

Do OOS applicants receive interview invites later/after they fill up seats for in-state students first?

I'd say you still have a decent shot. I think UTMB values GPA more than MCAT. I believe the average stats are 29/3.8.

Plus, the average is just that: the average. Some people get in with higher MCATs, some with lower!

Agreed, but a 27 is pushing it unless you're URM

Great... I'm definitely your typical white female.

What I hear is that the evaluation is getting more and more holistic. My MCAT score is the "chink in my armor" if you will. I know that the entire purpose of the standardized test is to level the playing field from college to college. It's unfortunate that I'm not a better test taker.

I'm going to cross my fingers, do a medical school interview rain dance, and we'll see where I end up. 🙂

Not applying this cycle, but is anyone else pissed off that a lot of applicants are getting their prereq classes done at CCs? Makes me annoyed to see them making A's in those CC science prereqs
Sorry for the late response (I just found this thread), but I just can't pass by this.
It has already been said that: 1) a lot of people take CC classes for financial or scheduling reasons, not to get an easy A; 2) adcoms do take into account the perceived difficulty of classes, and 3) med school admission is often subjective, random and, yes, unfair, but complaining about it won't change anything.

What I'm compelled to say is this. When asked about advice on surviving medical training, someone very wise said that it was important to keep track of what was on your plate, not what was on other people's plates. You're getting bent out of shape because of a presumable advantage other people get, and you're not even applying to medical school yet! This is not healthy. Peace man 🙂

I am an OOS applicant but I have strong connections to Texas, and I would like to make an appeal to be considered an in-state applicant. Would you guys recommend that I directly contact each of the TX schools that I'm applying to? My application has already been verified, if that changes anything.

Unless you fit the requirements for being a TX resident, you wont be able to be considered as an instate applicant, that is set by law, not the school. Just make sure you talk about your connections to Texas as they prefer out of state applicants who do have a reason to go to texas.

You sound far too sane to be applying to medical school...😉

Has anyone compiled a list of resources for the interview?
I already saw the sticky.

I was mainly looking for things like

What questions are asked, what questions to ask the interviewer about their school, etc...

Does anyone know what dates II's are being offered at for both the Texas Tech schools? As in are we at September still or is the process already at October.

Although I'm OOS, I have strong connections to Texas and having been living here for the past five years. I wrote about my connections in the primary application under the Residency section. Do medical schools have access to this part of the application, and, more importantly, would they actually read over it and consider it? I would really like to stay in Texas as my fiancee is here and currently in medical school. I also plan to live in Texas after medical school. Would writing an appeal letter to TMDSAS be a good option? What can I do to show my intentions to stay in Texas?

People who receive interviews from October - January, do they remotely stand any chance in Pre-Match? What about the Match?

Yes. Look at the 2012-2013 threads. I think quite a few people who interviewed during october got in through pre-match on Nov 15.

I needed to hear this... Means there is hope for me.

I took the june 20 MCAT and bombed it because I rushed to take it (was side swapped with personal statement, HPAC cover letter, LORs, TMDSAS, etc) that I never really had enough time to practice --- got a freaking 24!!!!! Only had 2 weeks to adequately practice for this (I'd been doing content review for a month though)..

Retake is Aug 28th. I have a very solid plan for practicing this time around. Doing tons and tons....and tons of practice this time around, from everything TPR, to Kaplan, to Berkeley to EK 1001/101. Have a lot of hope for this day.

As my score will come out Oct 1st, I have a slim hope of gaining an interview or so before prematch begins. Sitting at a 4.0 so hoping for a 30 MCAT on the retake to get some prematches.

Good luck to all.... And don't worry if ur not getting IIs yet. Almost ALL of my friends who got prematched didn't get interviews until mid-August thru November!!!

Some schools review it both with your first MCAT and again after your retake.
I think with a 4.0 you might get an interview from TCOM while you wait.

Good luck to everyone in this thread. I didn't bother reading through all of this, but I just wanted to post so that others may find it useful. UT San Antonio sent me an II this past Thursday and I submitted my TMDSAS on June 10th. I am in state. UT Houston just got my application this past Tuesday apparently and my UTSW and AMHSC applications are still under review.

I'm just old a non-trad 🙂 We tend to look at things more philosophically.

lol. I'm old but a complete mess about this process. 😉 I need to be a bit more philosophical as well at the moment...

It sounds like you're on track to do far, far better. Two months of focused prep should be more than enough with that 4.0. I assume that you learned your stuff with a perfect GPA so that you just need to practice test-taking skills. Best of luck.

Hey all, how optional are the optional essays? I'm having difficulties with the unique experiences/circumstances one but I really want to get my app in this week (since I'm already late). Any thoughts?

I did the diversity one. left the other one blank.

I'm OOS with lots of ties and connections to adcoms at UTH and UTSW, though not holding out any hope for UTSW.
Cutting down my personal statement for TMDSAS was painful. And now I have to decide which essays to use for the two optionals. I know I'm getting done late but meh, only so much I can do! Submitting to Houston, Southwestern, San Antonio and Galveston. Really like Houston!

Do them. I left them blank last year (I don't even remember why) and talked to the adcom at the school I interviewed at (after not matching) and he said it is extremely rare for them to interview someone who doesn't fill them out.
