The Support Group - A place for admissions-related rants and worries.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have been asked to provide a letter explaining the reason why my physics pre-req is expired. The school that I am applying to requires all science courses to be taken within the last 6 years. This course is now 6.5 years old. My explanation? Basically, I've returned to undergrad twice since I graduated for the purpose of upgrading and renewing my science courses (Biology and Chemistry). I simply can not afford to keep going back to replace courses that were expiring. Instead, I re-took the GRE and I've chose to work full time in a in a position that will count as veterinary experience as well as a part time job that would count as animal related experience. Thus strengthening other parts of my application.

Does this sound like an acceptable explanation?

Has anyone else ever written an explanation letter? If so, could you share yours with me so I have an idea of the format?

Thank you.

At the moment, I am too lazy to dig up the AVC thread, but didn't someone on the thread mention that they had to write an explanation letter too? Try messaging them and see what they have to say.

I dont know if this helps at all, but 2 years ago, I didnt even have my first interview until January 23rd of that year. Certainly didn't have any acceptances before that, but definitely had a large handful of rejections. After that interview, had a few more interview offers magically appear- including Iowa after I thought they were completely done interviewing.
Went on to get into a few schools and waitlisted at a few more. Keep your fingers crossed and your hopes up!

That does help cowgirla, thanks!

NCSU has me officially freaked out. Natasha emailed me two days ago asking to clarify a course I repeated on my transcript and my AP scores before they can continue with my application. I called her today and she still needs time to clarify some questions. I'm completely paranoid she's going to tell me that they aren't considering my application anymore!! This is my IS, and two years ago when I applied there wasn't any issue with these same topics in my application....this wait is causing so much anxiety I can't stand it!

I would take it as a good sign. It means they like you enough to care to ask, rather than just tossing away your file!

sounds to me like they are giving you serious consideration...stay positive.

Sounds like a good sign! NC is my IS too and I am dying with waiting!! Seriously, why do they have to drag this out??!

I've been waiting for the mailman for 2 hours now! So far, three people on here have heard from KSU, so I'm hoping that this week I hear something. Commence mailman stalking! :scared:

I hope so!! My phone is literally glued to my hand so I don't miss her call!! ah!

Although I have not surgically attached my phone to my hand, I almost feel as if I should. This waiting game is painstaking.....I should be more active and get my health affairs straightened out..... *sigh*

I just keep thinking that one year ago, I had just woken up with eye pain (like I did today) but had been eagerly awaiting to see if I really had an interview invite from Tufts and it had just been lost in transit. This was the week of the huge snowstorm blizzard blitz from the Arctic and Tufts admissions STILL sent me an electronic version of my interview invite. I almost started crying all over again:laugh::laugh:

Keep up the strength, 2016s! :luck::xf::luck:

all that stress for nothing! they were able to confirm all of their questions with my transcript and my application is *officially* moving on to the admissions review process!! yay!

Whew, what a relief for you!! 👍👍

I knew it was a positive thing...good luck Katie!

Thanks guys 🙂 Lessons I have learned today:

1. be patient!!!
2. don't overthink things!!

Haha, I need to absorb this too. I still slightly believe that my status was updated to "interview offered" due to a computer glitch, if only I can see that piece of paper.

taking a short break during the overnight shift just to say good luck to nordicat and everyone else who is still waiting to hear from OSU this week! keeping my fingers crossed for you guys! :xf: :luck:

Auburn is driving me nuts with their spaced out/slow interview invites!!! 😕

It's almost as if they are inviting only 1 person a day. And, of course, I'm checking my email like a frantic maniac. 😱

I've received two interview invites (Mississippi and Illinois)....and they're scheduled for the same day. :scared: And they're about 24 hours of driving apart.

I emailed Mississippi a couple days ago about rescheduling because I know that they do them over a few days, but I know Illinois does all of them on the same day, so there's no hope for rescheduling there....plus I have a feeling that rescheduing with Mississippi is unlikely.

Michigan State is my IS, and they should be sending out something within the next week or another wave in Feb. If I hear back from them soon, this won't be an issue, but I'm scared that I won't and I'll need to go to these other interviews. But I can't be at both....and how do I choose?!? What if I choose wrong?!?

Please tell me this has happened to someone else at some point.

Haha..nice! Hey, just curious...how do you feel now about your decision to start the DVM and turn down that fellowship you had at...Iowa(?)?? Sorry to put you on the spot, but it was a big decision for you at the time and just curious how you think your decision will eventually affect your ultimate goals.

Yeah, ISU.

It was a difficult decision and there are definitely days where I kinda wish that instead of paying a lot of $$$ for the "pleasure" of studying minutiae for some professor's arbitrary exam, I was getting paid for actually learning and trying to make a real difference in my field. I would be lying if I said that I don't question myself sometimes, especially when tuition bills come out and during finals week. 😉

But overall I still think that it was a sound decision, and I'm not too worried about my prospects coming out of here. I'll have a lot more debt, sure, but luckily or stupidly, I've never really been one to let money play a huge role in my decisions. It's a personality flaw, but pieces of paper and metal just aren't a strong motivator for me. Never have been (just ask my parents who tried to bribe me with money for grades).

Supposedly today was the AdCom meeting for Ohio, and a bunch of people had acceptances e-mailed to them. I'm hoping this isn't the "last hurrah" for their acceptances, because I really don't want a rejection letter in my mailbox next week. 🙁

Oooh, keep thinking good thoughts! You never know what will happen. Who knows maybe we are destined to be classmates :luck:

Me too! I called the office today to see what they were doing. The woman I talked to said they were sending out ~30 invites each day. She also said letters were being mailed out next week, so by the end of next week we should know "one way or another". She kind of made it sound like there may be more OOS invites sent in the beginning of next week. I really hope so... I fell in love with the school when I went down there to visit over the summer. Here's hoping.

@_@ why!!!!!!

... I guess this comment is kinda late but...

I love that a bunch of SDNers are dating engineers! lol.

Mine is a mechanical engineer ... 😍 ... he could spend days at an air and space museum, while I will ramble on for hours at natural history museums ... we are a really nerdy couple 😛

Additionally, my co-worker who is now going to VT is dating an engineer too ... hmm, seem to be a trend.

Lol. My husband doesn't even have a bachelor's, but he's a network/wireless engineer and he does very well with it. He's my suga daddy at this point. If I were going into general practice I don't know that I would ever be able to surpass his salary, assuming that he moves up as time goes by.

He doesn't nerd out on me too often. But I nerd out on him alllll the time. Hah.

nyanko- GO PENS! we FINALLY got a win today... 'bout freakin time, eh?!?

Neato. Mine is a software developer. 🙂 Side note, if you don't plan on doing GP, what is your projected plan after graduation? 🙂

Mine is a chemical engineer... continue the engineering trend! 😀😎 I was just working with a vet at our spay and neuter clinic yesterday and she was mentioning how most vets she knows are married to engineers... kind if funny
And yeah, he keeps saying I'll be his sugar mama... not sure what salary statistics he's looking at! 😕

Mine's a computer engineer. He's pretty knowledgeable about a lot of things, so he understands what I'm talking about when I nerd out with bio/vet stuff far more than I understand anything he's ever talking about. He'll periodically forward me interesting science articles from mainstream media, to stir up conversation. I just go, "my computer's making loud noises and I keep getting pop ups, I think I have a virus. Fix it. No, I don't want to know what's going on. I just want a functioning computer. pretty pretty please and thank you"

My boyfriend's a telecommunications engineer. 🙂

Also, we've decided that he's going to get his MBA while I get my DVM, so we can refer to each other as the Doctor and the Master. *nerd*

Mine's a post-bacc student with a degree in Psychology. She works as a waitress by day and a counselor for homeless youth by night. She's also a mentor for LGBT first-year students at OSU. She can still nerd out on a computer though-she's fixed mine more times than I can count.

I'm FREAKING OUT! I went to buy my plane ticket yesterday for my Western interview, and got distracted and stopped, and now the ticket went up $200!!!! :scared: I literally don't have the money and think I may have to cancel my interview 🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁👎thumbdown👎thumbdown

My boyfriend is a Red Seal Marine Diesel Mechanic who would love to go back to school to take engineering but is worried about leaving a good paying government job. Can I still join the club?

I 😍 enginerds. Or nerds in general. Especially hunky nerds. My ex-boyfriend from college was a linebacker and is now a dental student. It's a shame that one bit the dust...

I've also seen a fair number of the vet/dentist couples.

Ah-ha! So THAT'S what I've been doing wrong for so many years! However, the engineers are few and far between at medical schools. Guess I'll have to seek companionship elsewhere. But damn, the eye candy sure is nice in my neck of the woods. My latest 'baby doctor' is quite the handsome fellow! But I digress...

Yesterday I ended up calling all of the schools to which I applied (sans Ohio which I figure put the stamp on my rejection yesterday) to let them know that thanks to the USPS I still don't have a final grade for my correspondence class. It was an odd mixed bag of conversations... OK State was amazingly nice and told me no worries; but I got a piece of news I wasn't too thrilled about... I now have to take a CLEP test in gen chem II because I overlooked the 8 year rule - :help:!!!! The funny part was that they told me I would know their decision by March and when I asked if I could schedule the test for April to spare me the pain if it wasn't needed, she said 'Sure, as long as we'll have the final grade in time'. With this, I have come to the conclusion that the staff at OK State is on something simply because any time I phone a department at that school they are always super friendly, kind, understanding, and amazingly helpful. Going to that school would be good for my blood pressure.

As for the rest... The folks at Davis were also crazy nice... 'OK, no prob. No worries. Whenever you get it to us is just fine.' Wisconsin was interesting. They were totally cool with things; but when she asked for my name she replied with 'Oh, I know you - I've seen your transcripts.' I almost said 'I'm sorry' but managed to fumble my way through things. And then there was the old bitter bag that picked up the phone at Penn... And I quote... "Well, it isn't going to make any difference anyway." O...K...

And now back to the 'joys' of waiting to see if I've truly wasted my 30s or not. :woot:

Oh, I'm sure something will raise your blood pressure here, it just won't be the admissions staff. They're all really nice. 🙂

Yes 🙂 I think the qualifier here is someone who is nerds-out over inanimate objects (and I am throwing chemicals into that list). In more detail, they salivate over cars, trains, plains, computers, engines/machines of any sort, and/or chemicals... 😛

Mine basically chases after every scientific subject that I am un-interested in (but he appreciates biology too 👍) ... he loves patent law = pretty darn nerdy ... lol

So I guess my husband, the former Chemistry teacher who got parent-teacher conferences canceled for the WHOLE district when he accidentally made a contact explosive that the Bomb Squad had to come take away while he spent 4 hours in a police trailer being questioned, counts too?

(That particular stunt earned him "Rookie of the Year" at his school!)

My boyfriend isn't an engineer, but he is a PhD candidate in some indescribable, undesignated field of computer usage that involves being fluent in 3 different computer languages, collecting & organizing copious amount of "data", and sitting in front of a computer screen for hours upon end. He swears his degree field is "forestry" because his data has to do with tracking wildfires....I think he's just a computer nerd. 😛 And he's aware that he has to be my sugah daddy during this whole vet school experience! Lol.

Try again on a different computer. Or clear out your cookies and try again from your own. The airline sites are sneaky like that... Once they know you're serious about that flight (usually the second time you search it) the price goes way up.

I can't decide if you are insanely paranoid or really smart. 😕

I liked to travel in my previous life (with money.) I also dislike paying more than I have to for an airline ticket. Tuesday evenings are usually the best time for cheap tickets, BTW... 🙂
