The funny thing is, I am actually sorta serious... many of us (me) have never lived anywhere that gets colder than MAYBE 45 degrees (once a year). Living somewhere that gets as cold as Chicago requires that people learn a certain set of skills. For example, where do you buy those fur lined parkas? How do you build an igloo to survive? If you buy a coffee from starbucks, and go outside, does it freeze? Do the penguins bite?
I suggest Campmor.com for the parkas
If you go to the toy section of Target, you can buy an "igloo maker" which is a rectangular plastic box with a handle on it.
Starbucks coffee will never freeze, but you pay an extra 30 cents for that in Chicago.
Penguins DO bite. Bastards. "Winter urban rats" is what I call 'em!

I'll take the Chicago winter over the summer any day. Living now where there is no humidity, it is a hard adjustment to go home to chitown for visits. Just too damn humid.

I think I am going to go get a "I heart the Postal Service" t-shirt to try to make the letter come faster. No mail yet today, but with trishaaa crossing her legs, fingers, and toes - goodness is SURE to be here. Now if we could just get Barbara and Army an interview!!
Oh - and to the poster above regarding the weather, I am planning on just setting up a cot in the gym and never leaving the building for all of winter lol. On a serious note though, jbrice is going to have to hold a "living in Chicago for idiots" class because I don't know how to live somewhere so cold (like, uhh.. how do you get your car to work, and where do people buy those fuzzy hat things they wear in Siberia and Chicago?)

That is definitely an awesome idea. I dream about it everyday!! I am not nervous yet though because my application hasn't been sent to the committee yet. okay, back to memoring Loyola's website! 🙂

P.S. Yea, I am serious

Living somewhere that gets as cold as Chicago requires that people learn a certain set of skills. For example, where do you buy those fur lined parkas? in winter, our ice cream trucks become parka trucks...they play holiday music and have colorful pictures of the coats stuck on the side of the truck...children chase them down on snow-tire-equipped bikes. How do you build an igloo to survive? the key is using water as mortar after forming the snow bricks. it seals the cracks and binds the bricks with an icy glue. If you buy a coffee from starbucks, and go outside, does it freeze? yes, we call them 'bucksickles. Do the penguins bite? they're just love nips...wearing layers in the groin area is recommended, however.

in all seriousness, if any future loyolans (is that what we're called?!) need any advice on moving to and/or adjusting to Chicago, let me know and i'll be more than happy to help. i grew up near loyola and have lived in Chicago and the Chicago area my whole life.

Might I also recommend googling Loyola and reading about noteworthy recent accomplishments. It will give you something to talk about in your interview. For example, Loyola just broke its own record for smallest baby to survive. I had a neonatologist interviewer, so it definately gave us something to talk about! (plus how cool is a healthy baby that small!)

If I understood the status check person last week. I believe my file is in committee right now. So let's send out good vibes for tomorrow's weekly call! :luck: Because let's face it: Loyola's biggest accomplishment would be admitting me!

They called me for my interview on a Monday (if I recall correctly) so there may be some lag between when the committee meets and when the calls go out. OK.. just for fun, jbrice call Barbara so she sees that Chicago area code show up on her caller ID - when she answers, just say "GOTCHA!!!" then hang up.

Flop, if we both get into loyola and you still need a warm hat, I'll knit you one to get you by until you find your elmer fud hat. Also if you need info on living in the midwest, I've been in Iowa all of my life (we don't get as much snow, but I think it's a little colder). Just make sure you keep a shovel in your car if you have to street park. Unless you drive a truck or SUV, then you're less likely to have a snow bank the size of your car to dig out. Oh and you'll want an ice scraper. Credit cards work for light layers, but do you want to risk breaking it? I have yet to understand why buildings in this region feel the need to keep it that warm.

I have a concern I'd like to share with you all:

I do not have internet at my house, and I just quit my job to be a nanny (I am PSYCHED about that!), so as of December 12th I will no longer be able to come on here regularly and see who my classmates will be at Loyola next year. I am tempted to stay at work all night until Flop comes on here and tells us about his letter.

Will one of you guys call me and keep me updated*? I need to know when I should be crossing my fingers, toes, and legs, and for whom I am crossing them.

*NOTE: Keep in mind that I am currently living in a trunk until Dec. 3rd, the day after my scheduled Creighton interview. My phone does not get good reception in the trunk. 🙂

FLOP!!! I've figured it out! I was looking at your avatar (which i still find hilarious) and i saw your "Big envelopes ROCK" comment...see, you need to change that...you're intimidating the little loyola envelope...it wants to come and be happy with you, but it's afraid....

YIKES!! OF COURSE that was the problem. I fixed it - so now the little envelope can feel free to arrive. Trishaaaaa.. no internet access? How will you LIVE? If I get in, we should start a phone tree anyways so that those of us moving to a big new scary city have some people to explore with, and keep us from being homesick (unless we are Barbara, and we are bringing our own anti-homesickness device AKA a husband).

HOLY DOODAH!!! You were right.. within TEN MINUTES of fixing the line underneath my picture, the mailman brought the letter ... I AM IN BABY!!! WWOOOOOOOOO FRIGGIN HOOOOOOO!!!!!

I think I just sprained a smile muscle. WOW. Amazing.. Speechless...

...or we can live together. i doubt that barbara and her husband would want to live with us too!

omg flop, congratulations! 😀

Congrats!! I hope I will get an interview and be able to join you all at Loyola!!

Are you kidding? With how broke we will be, I will even be willing to bunk with my 18-month old so we can all share a place!

okay, enough talking as if I am already there, when I haven't even had an interview. So cool to see all of you so frickin' happy!

I am off to synthetic O Chem. I hope to see a nice blithering drunken post from Flop when I check back here this evening. 🙂

WOW! That is f###ing awesome! CONGRATS! 👍 😀

omg. Flop congratulations!!!!! I've been following your grueling ordeal for a long time. I'm so happy for you. I want to go to Loyola soooo bad. I've called in a couple of times to check on my status and I'm "under further review." What does that mean??? I sent in a letter of intent, but they haven't received it yet! 😱 There's something wrong with the mail. I'm going to call in again tomorrow and if they don't have it yet, I'm resending it with confirmation, overnight mail. Pleaaaase everyone cross your fingers for me. A lot depends on whether or not I get into Loyola...

Congrats to FLOP!!!!

I just had my interview at Loyola today, and I was So SO SOOOO impressed. I love everything about the school. Flop, I hope I'm in your shoes in a few weeks! (Although... I hope my mail moves more quickly than yours 🙂)

Chicago really is the WindyCity. 40 mph wind gusts today!

Well, its about goddam time... 😉

But seriously, congrats! Welcome to the club; hopefully we'll see you next year! 👍

Nice work Flop! I know I haven't posted much, but I have been following your journey the whole time. Go out and party and see you next year!

wow flop just a few month or so ago, you were in the "no interview" thread. now you're an accepted student. i'm sooo jealous.

...i really want to go to loyola chic too, they just won't give me an interview.

OMG Floppy! CONGRATS!!!!

Now it's time for you to pull some strings and get the rest of us interviews! :meanie:

Holy doodah Flopman! You'll soon find that muscle to be your zygomaticus major! Congrats on your acceptance from some facial muscle-weary M1s...

I won't tell you that your zygomaticus major is innervated by the zygomatic branch of CNVII because that would just be rediculous.

-dope-

Congrats Flop!! I am so jealous though!!

This thread is NOT going away!

This thread has the nicest people on it, and I want to go to school with the nicest people. SO, I wam working on a letter of interest to Loyola (my app hasn't gone to committee yet--stupid August MCAT). Would someone be willing to review it? I have never written one, but having gone to Catholic school up to high school--I think I know what those Jesuits are looking for!

I did also. I hope they like me!! 🙁

gdbaby, when was your app complete?

Barbara, I don't know much about letters of interest, but I'd be happy to review it. I've been in Catholic school my whole life, including college. If I don't know something about Jesuits by now, I've got a problem...

got that right...now that we got flop in, we'll start concentrating all our good energies on you and gdbaby...let's get this thing moving! 😀

I'd also be willing to review a letter. I only went to catholic school once as a kid (not the best year of my life) but I do have a religious studies minor. Also I drafted one last year to a school I really like, but didn't make it off of the wait list. And now I'm glad, because on second thought I do not want to live in Cleveland, Chicago (which I ignored my first go round) is by far much cooler and closer to home.

hey does loyola send out some sort of file completion notice? or do we have to call them to ask?

they do send a letter in the regular mail, but if you want to call, they accept phone calls for status checks on thursdays...and they're extremely helpful and friendly.

Agreed.....I would call today, as it is Thurs if you have time. Matt is very nice and helpful.

What's the time frame we're allowed to call for a status check on Thursdays?

Thanks!

haha are you guys stalking this thread? anyway, do any of you have the phone # on hand? i'm at work and the number's at home...
