Stanford promotes excellence in both academics and athletics. Stanford has won the Directors' Cup, which honors the most successful program in NCAA Division I sports, the last 14 years. In 2007–08, Stanford won two national team championships and had 12 teams in the top five and 17 in the top 10. Forty-nine athletes and coaches also represented Stanford at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Basketball - Women's team was in the Final Four this year. The Men's Basketball team has consistently been performing, including producing NBA players such as the Lopez twins and Josh Childress.
Tennis - ever heard of John McEnroe? Bryan Brothers? Dick Gould? Men's tennis is consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country and is 8th this year. Women's tennis may be 13th this year but has been consistently ranked #1 over the past decade and a half. The most memorable is perhaps also one of the most dominating stretches in NCAA history (from 2004 to 2007) - winning 89 matches in a row. The 89-match winning streak produced three NCAA titles, three Pac-10 Championships, seven All-Americans (including Amber Liu who was NCAA National Player of the Year for 2 years) and a member of the ATP tour. Head coach Lele Forood upped her dual match record to 171-3, achieving conference and national accolades along the way. Overall, Stanford Men's and Women's Tennis have won 24 NCAA Division I Championships in 23 years.
Soccer - women's soccer ranked #1 in the country last season, finished 3rd in the nation this year
Swimming - Men's swimming and diving was ranked #1 in the nation this year and has been ranked in the top 3 for the past 20 years. Women's swim and diving is equally dominant.
Volleyball - Women's are top 3 in the nation consistently
After 20 days of competition at the 2008 Olympic Games, Stanford athletes left Beijing with 25 medals, the greatest haul ever by the school's representatives at a single Olympics. The previous record was 21 medals, achieved at the 1924 Paris Games.
